In this excerpt from Gibson TV’s Icons with Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Noel reflects on the third Oasis studio album, “Be Here Now” and the tour of America after their Knebworth gigs nearly ruined the band. Listen as he shares stories from the “Be Here Now,” recording sessions, how they were kicked out of Abbey Road Studios in London, and how he really feels about one of Oasis’s most successful albums.
Released on August 21, 1997, “Be Here Now” was the follow-up album to “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” and went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. But Noel isn’t a fan of the record. Watch as Noel reveals how he feels the band entered the studio too soon after their massive success with “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” Noel talks about the challenges of recording songs that he felt weren’t initially strong enough to make it onto the first two Oasis records and how some of the seven-plus minute songs affected the live shows. He reflects on the pressure of following up their first two iconic albums and how different “Be Here Now” was compared to “Definitely Maybe” and “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”
Even though he doesn’t like the album as a record, Britpop was in full swing, and Noel fondly recalls the chaotic yet enjoyable period that followed, talking about the band’s experiences on the road and the fact they were still a band having fun. This interview offers a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in Oasis’s history and Noel’s personal journey as a songwriter, learning lessons from recording what is arguably one of the most successful albums in UK music history.

The Girl In The Dirty Shirt is super underrated, I've always loved that song and seems like nobody ever gives it enough credit.
That, the fever and then flashbacks...all 3 tracks are super underrated
My favourite on the album is its getting better man! Something golden about that track!
@@colerobinson2628 great tune, but way too long imo. The live Knebworth 96 version reigns supreme 🔥🔥🔥
@@will_da_man_ to be honest though that album is riddled with gems, don't go away, my big mouth, fade in out, be here now, magic pie, dya know what I mean, hope I think I know, stand by me, all around the world, its one them albums you can play all the way through and enjoy!
@colerobinson2628 I find it to be the exact opposite lol. I hate listening to it all the way through: it's way too long and loud and it just gets fatiguing. Gives me a headache. But the songs are a good listen to on their own.
love how honest he is about his work
Every album from SOTSOG to DOYS he called "the best album we've done since Definitely Maybe". So he's not that honest.
He just sways with the tide of whatever the critics have said about it
yes he's extremely objective
Be here now was their first concept album.the concept was they did cocaine.
I can't like your comment enough
Nailed it🤜🏻

No matter how many times Noel shits on that album I'll still love it.
Same. Amazing record start to finish.
be here now rules
It's also one of my favourites no matter what he says.
It’s getting better man….
on his last tour, he actually played stand be me live. Think it's the first time he has started playing it again since 2000
A documentary of that era will be THE ultimate biblical r'n'r thing to put out on video
Be here now is amazing. Don't go away is one of the best songs noel ever wrote
100% love that song
It's a rip off of a song by the real people 😂
most of them are haha
There is at least 3 classic songs on the album (Don’t Go Away, Stand By Me, DYNWIM) and 3 or 4 others that are very solid rock songs. Replace Magic Pie with The Masterplan (which Noel regrets not saving for the album) and the album would be almost on par with their first two great albums.
@@tjsshowalter it's not so much the songs, they are definitely there, it's the production and mixing.
As an Oasis, BE, LG, NGHFB fan, I absolutely love Be Here Now. It is my go to Oasis album. From buying the cassette version when it first released, it struck a chord in me that I can't explain, and has never let go. I think its that it just came out during a time when me and my mates were young, going out drinking, having house parties and without cares in the world. What a time to be alive. My personal favourite song from Be Here Now would have to be Magic Pie. Noel definitely needs to reassess his stance on this album.
Really happy that BHN is getting a lot of love in the comments, it's still my favourite Oasis record.
Yes, it's overly long, excessive, and loud. But on the other hand...
It's overly long, excessive and loud.
Their most ROCK effort to date. Love it.
Jesus Christ, it pisses all over 99% of albums out there.
Excellent words!
If you think Be Here Bow is better than Definitely Maybe, you are lost.
As someone who has played guitar and drums for over 50 years, I think this album is excellent. It may not live up to the first two opuses which are absolutely perfect (and complementary) but it is largely underestimated.
Got in the line and bought the album the day it came out. Also saw them on tour in late 1997. Personally I love the record. It might be not as good as the first two, but it's pure madness.
Noel got on the lines while making the album 😂
That album was really good .
Hope I think I know is soooo underrated should do it live
don't go away is amazing as well

True
But I still love the cacophony that is “D’you Know What I Mean?” …the build up to that guitar being turned loose after it was doing its own thing for the first part, it’s still a 10/10 song
Best song on the album
But what’s it about?
@@ziggypop79
What’s any Oasis sing about? Even Noel says he doesn’t know.
It’s still got some great lyrics in it and is a good song.
I actually prefer the Mustique demo version released a few years ago with Noel singing, it’s more stripped down and moody.
I’ve never been huge on live music or live recordings, so I tend to listen to the album my mood revolves around. To sit and listen to the individual albums, on their own and not comparing them to each other is more fair, to be honest. I love all three of those albums. ❤😊
Gibson, please release another icon episode. This icon series is epic💯🤘
Still Be Here Now is a phenomenal album & sounds great played loud🔥
That album was still inmense
This is the most honest and believable commentary from Noel on Be Here Now.
The 25 guitars all at once sound is one of the main reasons I love Be Here Now
The songs from Be Here Now really came to life when they played them live. It would be awesome if they release the recordings from the ‘97 G-MEX show.
God I hope they release a Be Here Now album+tour documentary, probably 2027
The Be Here Now tour was Oasis at their highs live. Lucky enough to see their Den Bosch show in The Netherlands, biblical!
Liam’s voice was damaged at that gig. It was November 1997. It was back to normal for the GMEX gig the next month.
Don't know what is about that album but I find it so intriguing, the songs aren't the caliber of the first two records but they're not bad, it's the kind of album they might have had and then eventually worked up to definitely maybe and then what's the story. Always enamoured by the albums of artists that never quite took off, but they're still something to them
Saw Oasis at their last gig in America in 96 in Virginia. That was their peak
I'm all about the BE HERE NOW SUPREMACY! ❤❤❤
Be Here Now - my favourite Oasis album - no question => masterpiece 👍🎶
It's the only Oasis album that lets you feel like it's still the late 90's the sun is always shining, and you're on top of the world.
Well he may not like it but I love it! My Big Mouth, I Hope I Think I know, Fade In Out, Don’t Go Away and Be Here Now are all bangers!
I seen them on the be here now tour and it was brilliant the gigs were brilliant!! Long songs of be here now but still brilliant gigs
As much as Noel doesn't like BHN, the fans seem to love it. And rightly so - it's got a few of my fave Oasis songs on it
Be Here Now is easily my favourite record of Oasis. I saw them live for the first time 3 days before Knebworth and after that 17 shows up until 2009. It's Getting Better Man is genius if ya bother to check out the riffs and My Big Mouth is just headcase Rock n Roll! Fade In Out is one of their best songs ever.
Great to hear from Noel!
My favourite album is Be Here Now with my favourite oasis song. Stand by me. 😍
The main issue for me it's the length. There's just one song that i can accept being 7 minutes long, and that's Fade in out, the rest should be at max 5 minutes long, including All around the world which lasts 9 (!!!) minutes and has a reprise right after. What were they thinking!?
I don't think the album is bad, it's their 3rd best, but i never listened to it from beginning to end. Never had the patience to do that.
Finally someone praising Fade in Out
EXACTLY
Don’t believe the truth is their 3rd best imo.
@@jpwaitforit5801Johnny Depp on slide guitar too!😎🎸
Be Here Now was the first physical disk that I owned, which i did not even buy. A had this huge crush on this girl and she lend to me this album. I didn't know who their were but of course i listen to it from end to end multiple times. Never gave back it back to her, 😂
Epic album, totally underrated by Noel. Seeing them at Earls Court on that tour was just amazing
Be here now is my favourite album
They were 'having it' and they made a record of exactly that. The whole thing needs a remix and a touch of editing, but it's still great, and particularly the b-sides from that era! Include them and it's classic.
Go check out , fade in out , live at the Gmex in Manchester, and it's just epic ! The guy has such massive standards it's easy to understand why he feels like this album isn't up to scratch but ask the majority of oasis fans it's a brilliant album and 1 which in it's entirety played out still holds up .
Still some great tracks 'it's getting better man' in particular which sound great live and 'i hope i think i know' also
Such an underrated album
On the Be Here Now singles there are also many phenomenal B-sides!
I love it. 5-6 brilliant songs. Far better than anything they did in the 2000s.
He puts that album down too much
He does but he‘s actually right that they should have let Morning Glory ride out a bit longer cause it was still massive in 97
@@geekmac9349 yeah he is correct about that it’s hard to imagine a band putting out an album so soon after the previous massive selling album now
I think there’s more to it than just not liking the songs. It’s the least documented part of the bands career and it’s when they were at their biggest.
I don’t think he does, he’s right that their career was never same after Be Here Now, it was a misstep for them
Not nearly enough
Sincerely thought and still do that it’s the best out of the three, attitude clobber and proper rock n roll tunes
Noal just needs to be happy with how fricken much-bigger oasis is going to with this reunion Liam to this gentleman are such a powerful band
I love that album, i grew up liking post rock records so I don’t care much about the song lengths I just love how the guitars sound and how big choruses feel but I understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to the point that I’ll name a song off that record to an oasis fan and they never know about be here now lol
It's their best record. And that's a hill I will die on.
Same, we’re both Fools on the hill🤝
@@lakaffbass Hell yeah, friend!
I'll be up there with ya lads!
IDC what he says, & he's partly right abt certain aspects of that record too IMO, but(!).... D'you Know What I Mean? is *still* the zenith of Oasis' singles, at least for my money anyway... I still think that tune is absolutely brilliant. Plus, Be Here Now debuted at #2 on The Billboard Top 200 Albums Charts, it went platinum - doing a million+ copies Stateside - & went on to sell nearly 8 million copies, all around the globe! But ppl were expecting Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper from a band who'd always been far more like The Stones, The Kinks & The Roses than The Beatles or Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys, ya know? Oh... And (American) Rolling Stone gave it 4/5 stars - which has since been revised to 5/5 stars FFS - & in the same year as OK Computer, it was voted #1 album of 1997 in The Rolling Stone Readers Poll as well! Helluva a way to 'fail,' innit?!
It's still a cracking album, and there are some mega mega tunes on it. Shouldn't be so hard in himself. With time it's become a classic collection album.
yes and no, it has great iconic Oasis songs, Stand By Me, Around The World, Don't Go Away, D'You Know, Fade In Out, I think he essentially got bullied by the public into hating it - that being said it could've precisely just had way less songs, they were indeed outrageously long, and the third album should've definitely been The Masterplan
Be Here Now is my absolute favorite Oasis album. There, I said it!
It was a great album. Lots of good songs on it. Don’t Go Away , All Around The World , etc all great
That album is awesome and will always be.
Songs on the record:
-do you know what I mean
-stand by me
-don’t go away
-all around the world
Noel Gallagher:
-I don’t like it
xdddddd
To me BHN has highest artistic value. Many interesting and emotional songs. Very mature sound. The moment when people started treating them as a serious band.
Be Here Now is Oasis's version of the Use Your Illusion albums.
Interesting take. Maybe not a perfect comparison, but I see what you're saying.
Respectfully disagree, Be Here Now is a masterpiece. Just tough to follow Morning Glory, but BHN goes hard af front to back
Who are you? Just a fan.
He's the man.
I agree! Be here now is amazing!!!
I would agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong 😒
nah it’s shithouse. 2 good songs and a bunch of filler
@@ChrisShortyAllenJust a fan? Those fans bought his records buddy. He’s entitled to his opinion just like yours (and you’re just a fan aren’t you?) saying Noel is the man. He’s been wrong on many occasions like releasing BHN.
DYKWIM remains one of my favourite Oasis songs and I much prefer the original version to Noels rethink
I actually like the demo he recorded in Mustique the best, it’s basic production but I think it sounds great.
Take 5 or 6 songs from Be Here Now, 5 or 6 b sides from before that album and it would have been as good as the first two if recorded properly !
My take on be here now: the best 6 songs on it are biblical (DYKWIM, My Big Mouth, Dont Go Away, Stand By Me, Fade In Out and I Hope I think I know, plus b sides like stay young) and had the potential to be the best Oasis record. The issue songs wise was there was no wonderwall, or DLBIA equivalent and recordings wise it was not what it should have been. Still a class album (9/10) but only a 13/10 would have met expectations after MG
Don’t go away and Stand by me were the Wonderwall and Don’t look back in Anger of Be Here Now.
Solid take.
He’s right. But also the songs feel long because they’re all slow tempos and drag on.
I listen to them on RUclips sped up and they’re much better.
Favourite oasis record for me.
I love Be Here Now. The loud guitars and the melodies. Some songs are mixed to the point where you can't hear some of the guitar solos. That's my only gripe with Be Here Now.
Whatever. For me, Be Here Now is on equal footing with Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe. Some days its my favorite Oasis album. Its amazing and i fuckin love it, even if they dont.
It’s getting better (man!!) is a great tune
The first 3 are equally perfect in their own way
D'you know what i mean is one of their best tracks...
The songs worked pretty fine live at Gmex '97
My Big Mouth 10/10 banger every day of the week! As well as I hope I think I know
Saw them live in Pittsburgh in 1998. One of the best concerts I’ve seen. Cornershop opened for them. Not sure what Noel is babbling about lol.
Be Here Now kicks arse & i won't hear anything else!!
this is my fav album actually
At least the album gave us Gmex 97
I got lucky because Be Here Now was the first Oasis album I ever owned. Sure, I had heard the radio hits on air. But I liked it enough to buy Definitely, Maybe and Morning Glory at a used CD store, so my listening experience kept on getting better and better. Until Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, of course.
Who Built the Moon was great tho
I love this album from start to finish. Idk what the internet says.
Be Here Now rightly deserves to be a part of that vintage oasis era that could never be replicated. However, I feel that the album is kind of a victory lap of Oasis's achievements between Morning Glory and Knebworth. For me they could have trimmed some of the fat off the tracks, or they should have made it a double album adding b-sides like: Stay Young, Going Nowhere, The Fame, etc. I also believe Noel recorded a demo of 'Let's All Make Believe' in these sessions (which might go down as one of the best Oasis songs ever!). Nevertheless, I appreciate Noel's honesty in this vid.
What does he know?!! 😅 It's a classic 👌🔥
Noel never liked it but most of the fans love it.
I always thought 'Standing on the shoulder of giants' was a failure. The first three albums are magical.
I wanna hear the 'Swedish classical album'.
I love be here now the 1997 g max gig one of there best it's Great Liam loves it everything is loud and long be here now is awesome
I love be here now
12 minute all around the world
Its getting better man x39
Be here now the song
Some quality tunes on there man
Disagree with Noel here....I think Be Here Now is a great album and the tour was fantastic.
I understand how Noel look back in anger at that time and dislike BHN but that record is nowhere as bad as it thinks it is. It means a lot to so many people.
Great album. Love the guitars.
Love that album
Rare instance where I say that I respect Liam’s attitude on this album more. “I’m proud of it. It’s just a bit long.”
Be Here Now was just over produced. Songs were ok but they were too long and it was just too messy.
No
I’ve not listened to it for years, but remember thinking at the time that the songs were too short lyrically. They would have a chorus and maybe two verses at most and it was just repeated and ridiculously inflated so what should have been a 2 1/2 min song would last 6 or 7 mins.
‘Overproduced’ is cliche of music criticism which I’ve never really understood.
If a producer’s job is to make a song sound great on record, then isn’t a song which sounds bad ‘underproduced’?
And it’s not like songs on the first 2 albums and b-sides didn’t have layered vocals, string sections, multi-tracked guitars etc
The only Oasis song which I ever think ‘Christ, this is too long’ is Hey Now on WTSMG
@@Uppernorwood976 I just mean there's too much going on in the mix, it sounds messy and overdone. Completely unrefined. Not sure how else to describe it
@@grahamt19781 no, you're right, in a sense. In an arrangement sense, it was way overproduced (songs were too long, too many layers of distorted guitars), and the mix suffered in some songs as a result. They had the budget to get all the studio time and strings, etc. in, so it's impossible to say it was "underproduced." Maybe poorly produced/thought out and definitely poorly mixed, at times.
For a guy that most of the time always been right about his music, he's very wrong on Be Here Now. That album sounds mega and huge. Remember that he recorded those demos in 1996, while in Mustique. No british band (or american) at that time, could get that massive sound in studio. Not even the Pumpkins. Plus, I believe 'I Hope, I Think, I Know' remains as one of the best vocals ever by Liam. Pure rock'n'roll. He should be proud about that album.
i have like 10 different live versions of d'you know what i mean in my ipod and i love them
All my people right here right now
Know what I mean.
Its an OK record at best. Fun to talk about in hindsight! heres what i would done... #1) Shave 1 to 2 minutes off of every song lol. Noel says this in other interviews also. Songs are way too long. #2) Re-arrange the song order, imagine BHN opening with "My Big Mouth" and that massive intro, instead of the whole helicopter thing and slow paced Know What I Mean (which is the same chords as Wonderwall!) that song to #2. #3) Delete Magic Pie all together and move Dont Go Away to #3. ..Magic Pie could have been replaced with a "b-side" cut from The Masterplan
*which is the same chords as Wonderwall!*
So? Lou Reed and Dylan made a career of reinterpreting their own songs and often reused chord progressions from their previous stuff. The talent comes from making the two songs sound different.
@@deadseagull-xf3lk I like the song and I agree with ya! But perhaps not as the first single right after the album with one of the most famous songs in history lol … I remember BHN release day in the US radio jockeys in my city made a big deal about it , the song fell off quite fast in America anyway
The Masterplan should've been their 3rd album. I even think Noel said this.
@@Danjoker.
Imagine had they not released those B-Sides? After Morning Glory, it would have been a hat trick.
Not having "D'You Know What I Mean?" as the opener instantly makes the album worse.
I love Be Here Now!
Don't go away is a masterpiece
should of asked Noel did the band play the full be here now album for the BBC Cameras during the making of Right Here Right Now 1997 at air studios ?
Be here now is fantastic
Always loved it, I don’t care what Noel thinks.
I honestly can’t really take what he says seriously, not just because I think Be Here Now is great, but also because he also loves to put down Morning Glory
I think also they shouldn't have put so many A-list songs as b-sides on the singles of the first two records. If they had had a bunch of the songs that wound up being on Masterplan, I think Noel would look on Be Here Now more fondly. Still think the album is solid.
Of course, years later it's easy to reflect, but at that moment it probably made sense for Oasis to simply go back into the studio so as not to lose the momentum. The only “problem” was that there was such a circus around Be Here Now that people had very high expectations, especially after Morning Glory. Maybe it would have been better to just take more time to catch new inspiration
