Trekking With Shepherds 🇦🇱 | Albania's Accursed Mountains

- Опубликовано: 11 ноя 2024
- Come along with us as we join two mountain shepherds on their daily duties to a remote family hut in the Accursed Mountains of North Albania. Also known as the Albanian Alps, these fierce mountains are home to the Kelmendi tribe and their descendants.
05m17s - Driving to the mountains
11m22s - Trekking with the shepherds
We visit the historic ruins of the Kelmend regions oldest church and learn how the tribe fought off the Ottomans and the communists, holding on to their Catholic beliefs and traditional values for centuries.
In this episode we follow to shepherds for a day, battling with heavy rain and unforgiving wind. We venture through the mountains to a remote shepherds hut. Here we find our guides family tending to the livestock and seeking shelter from the elements. We are invited in for raki and Turkish coffee and even get to sample some yogurt from their herd of goats.
This film is a behind-the-scenes look at a photographic project we are working on in the North of Albania.

From Rust to Roadtrip very beautiful again. Hope u are well in Cornwall.
@@chicagomike Thank you yes we are enjoying the lovely weather this week
Love this! The Shepard is actually my uncle! I'm also from the UK but my origin is Albanian from Kelmendi. I would be happy to translate any of the footage/answers Kola gave you if you still need it or answer any questions about the Kelmendi Region. Love to see people taking an interest in where I am from. Great work!!!!!!!!
That’s amazing! So pleased you enjoyed the video. That would actually be great thank you for the offer! Is there a way we can contact you? You’re welcome to drop us your email address via Instagram if you like or alternatively our email address is fromrusttoroadtrip @ hotmail.com
Hi guys, another great video...this region is fascinating and its reach in history, it was first visited by an English traveller called Edith durham 1909. She travelled through Balkans but she fell in love with this region, she spend 20 years writing books and photographing these remote tribes...and the tribes protected her under (ancient code called Besa) travelling safe back and forth as she was alone traveller...the tribes titled her the Queen of albanian Highlands...you guys should write a book about your Balkans travells...Winston Churchill once famously said the Balkans produce more history than you can consume...and again well done guys 🇦🇱🇬🇧🇦🇱🇬🇧🇦🇱
Thank you! We’ve been reading up on Edith Durham’s work to give us information for these videos actually. She was a remarkable woman and we can totally relate to her fascination for this area.
A book is actually in the very early stages right now and we want to include many anecdotes from our Balkan adventures as well as some of our best photography so hopefully we can get that published as soon as possible ☺️
@@FromRustToRoadtrip It's great how this community helps and offers advice and guidance without any reservations. I definitely need to increase my reading range to improve my understanding.
Being born in the US to parents from Albania, these videos are treasures to me. Amazing that you managed to get so far up to meet the shepard. Unfortunately I don't even know the language, as my parents wanted me to blend in without prejudice in the US. If my Dad were alive, I know he would love to help you with your project. I'm hoping to visit one day before I pass, but it's been hard to convince members of my family to commit . I don't have to tell you how physically difficult it can be. You guys did well considering. Maybe next time bringing some small gifts like candies and cigarettes would be nice and much appreciated. I can tell you that our culture seems to be hardwired to be suspicious and paranoid, yet warm-hearted and welcoming at the same time. Nice to see you gave that man a reason to put on his best suit! The quality of your videos are second to none. I wish you much deserved success in all that you do. A new subscriber from Florida USA.
Wow thank you for this lovely comment! How interesting your story and you’re so right about Albanian culture, it really is a blend is many contrasting elements. That’s a good tip about the gifts- we always want to take them something but never know what to bring. Really glad you enjoyed the video and we hope to make it back to Albania to create more as soon as possible 🇦🇱
@@FromRustToRoadtrip I'll be following and sharing. Looking forward to your next adventure. Hope you and your loved ones are doing well and staying healthy.
@@FromRustToRoadtrip I just thought of some other options for little gifts. Some dried fruits or sweet cookies, little cheeses, hair clips or elastic for girls hair, Bic lighter, little souvenirs from England. Little inexpensive things, easy to carry. I don't want to pressure you, so I hope you don't misunderstand, but it's customary to bring a gift when visiting a home.
Thank you! Those are some great suggestions. We’ll definitely be taking gifts along with us next time. Hope you enjoy the next episodes to come ☺️
❤❤❤ you can maybe get hold to some relatives to get more in touch with country 😊
Reminds me of many a trip to Wales - in the Summer. Ha! Fascinating video and beautifully shot in such terrible conditions. Fabulous work!
Haha we can see the resemblance! Thanks so much 😄 The hardest part that day was getting out of bed and heading out into that pouring rain 😂
What a lovely couple. Fantastic video guys. I take my hat off to you both
Thank you so much 💙
Another great video! I'm sure this was a trip you will not soon forget!
Thank you! Definitely not 😄
This trek looks like a pretty cool experience, amazing to see some of those remote settlements!! Bummer about the weather though. We'd love to do something like this when we can finally head out and travel again in the future! Beautiful video guys! 🌟
Thank you! ☺️ It was amazing, but we could’ve done so much more of it weren’t for the weather. We have a couple of friends both of whom are starting to do trekking tours through the Albanian Alps- you can find one of them on Instagram @wildtouralbania and the other is our friend Anton from the previous video we posted. They both live in different areas of the mountains so let us know if you want to be put in touch ☺️
You two are true warriors! Thanks again for your dedication to bring us such epic storytelling and videography. The mountain spring water fill was super cool as I could just imagine how great it tasted! Great work and happy travels!!
Thanks Terry! Appreciate it ☺️ If only we could keep doing this kind of thing all the time we would happily (although maybe we need a bit of training at the gym first 😅)
21:32
Lol!
That was great. Her priceless reaction
Wow @ 4:21 my house is up there by the cross I can't wait to go back home and visit I haven't been home since 2008 😞 I would have love to take u guys all everywhere translating what all these people have to say. There's so much history and stories I myself would have loved to hear from the old folks up there many stories they have to tell only these tribe people know the really stories about the history of these lands it's truly a beautiful place! Can't wait to go back
Oh wow that’s so cool! We love that village with the giant cross above it, it makes for some amazing photos! Well if you and we are ever in Albania at the same time perhaps we could arrange to meet up? Having a guide / translator would allow us to visit even more villages and document their way of life and if you’re interested in the topic too that’s even better ☺️
great video
thank you for visiting this region.A rich ethnographic region filled with legends and myths of 7 tribes from Malesia e Madhe(Great Highlands)that fascinated a lot of travelers by its way of life and virgin nature.
Nature has shaped mentality of my ancestors and toughend us like the rocks of our highlands .
Preserving faith increased regional identification even more and even today secular and atheist highlanders are subjective when talking about catholic faith because it didn’t represent only faith as cult but an alternative to freedom,a good way to live by traditional law.
thank you once more wish to both of you a happy and healthy life
at the end i would only want to say a phrase from my ancestors that represented them in every aspect
“Bukë e krypë e zêmer”
Thank you! That’s beautifully put. It’s such a unique and fascinating region, I think we need to learn even more about it and certainly come back. That’s a very interesting point about religion too, and I guess the adversity Albania has faced in terms of practising religion is the reason the country is so tolerant of each other.
I understood the word ‘bread’ in that expression but the last word has two meanings when translated so I’m not entirely sure which one it is, but am I right in thinking the phrase is representative of their endurance and resilience, living on little but thriving still?
Thank you for sharing!
From Rust to Roadtrip the literal meaning is
bread salt and heart
every guest was welcomed and made feel like in his home
despite living on little
TRULY AMAZING. ☀️🙏🌏🚐😊😊🌞
Thanks Darren! ☺️💙
Again beautifully done you two ... love exploring Albania with you virtually ... a place I probably will never get to physically but would love to maybe! .... Would also like to meet you two too possibly :))
Thank you! Yes that would be lovely, maybe we’ll see you out on the road some day ☺️
Sad to leave the region, hope you can return soon. Your story of the region will be eagerly received.
I was amazed at how clean the shepherd was too, not a spot on him.
As someone noted the history and people are just so deep and hardy, and so well captured by your work.
Thanks Clive! It's our next endeavour to secure some funding, get back to Albania and spend a few weeks or months in this area solidly documenting it before it changes forever
@@FromRustToRoadtrip Do you know approximately when you will get back there?
I am Albanian from Macedonia, living in Germany, but I would like to help you with translation and also with the history of this land (I already have written a History book). There are many small detailed interesting things that make you understand almost everything and then everything makes sense.
When you will know the exact date, just let me know and we can meet in the land of eagles "Shqipëri" (Albania).
Greetings from Germany
Another amazing video guys! Loving this series been watching you guys since the beginning!
Thanks Max, really appreciate it! You can probably tell how far we've come on from our earliest videos to now haha
From Rust to Roadtrip yeah it’s great! Well done 👍
love your videos! i miss albania so much these days 😔 we used to go by bus from tiran to kukës for six hours back then and used to stop to eat and to fill our water bottles with that mountain water and it's bringing back memories 😭
Great stuff guys, always love your vids 😊👍🏻
This video is so beautiful and so full of info! Thanks for representing our place with such passion. Hope you really enjoyed your staying and to see you soon again
Best regards! 🤝😁😊
Thankyou, really glad you think so! We love Albania, we had the most wonderful time and we will certainly be back again!
Great drone footage! Fantastic episode.
Thank you! ☺️
The dreaded van leak! Aahh. We've experienced a wet bed day too.
Great vlog guys, well done. Very interesting
Thank you! And our van has never not leaked, it’s just a fact of LDV life 😂
Thank you for another great travelogue, always look forward to Sunday's. Hope your both ok down in Cornwall with not too many grockle invaders! Take it easy and thanks for keeping us entertained, will definitely check out your photography website.
Thanks so much! That’s very kind of you 😄 Cornwall is getting busier but it’s largely locals still with possibly quite a few second home owners and the odd few tourists trying their luck at getting down without getting stopped by the police and sent home 😂
Another good vid guys keep them coming and STAY SAFE
Thank you! You too 🤙
Another awesome video guys. The start of the video had us laughing with the 'money & weight saving' scheme :-)
Thanks guys! Haha it’s one of the bonuses of having an LDV 😂
Wow, will definitely look at your other sites. If they are any reflection of the videos you do I am in for a treat
I can't get over how healthy you both look considering you were about to be forced into a raw diet. I am constantly amazed by the friendly nature of everyone you come across, did you never feel vulnerable? Keep safe and sound and hopefully your plan's are going well for future trips. Guy.
Thank you! That's very kind of you. The only time we've ever felt vulnerable was when our van was broken into, if someone was attempting to break into our van (usually with us in it) or if we've read bad reviews of an area on camper van apps like Park4Night. But in Albania we never have that fear- everyone is so friendly, and there's a heavy police presence in all the towns and cities so we felt safe leaving our van there. The majority of people we've met have been very kind, and the world isn't such a scary place as the media would have you believe
That's a great video, that road was fantastic, would have been fun to drive there on a motorcycle. Very interesting to see the life of the shepherds. It was quite amusing the guide looked like he was on a Sunday stroll and you had all kind of troubles following him- well I can assure you that I would have too
Haha glad you can see our struggle through the video! Those guys were ridiculously fit, especially for their age. I think the SH20 is / is becoming quite a popular motorcycle route, would definitely recommend it as it’s spectacular
@@FromRustToRoadtrip You're very welcome- anytime when the world opens up again 😉 I surely ought to be one... 🤗💐
Some villages in the Albanian Alps you take you life in your hands get to. Walking on passes that only one person at a time can pass with a drop straight down.
Hi guys, just to let you know i am riding my motorbike around Albania next week, looking to do the Llagora pass and just nose around for a few days.
Have fun! 🇦🇱
@@FromRustToRoadtrip If the storms move on that is.
Yayyyyyyyyy little tooth episode❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍
Waaaw im impresd guys :) gréât job :)
Thanks Eduart! Appreciate it 😄
Well done guys 🙏😍
Thanks for another very interesting adventure videos. I was wondering if you two have tried any of the Albanian to English translation apps available? I have no idea if they would be of any use but they might be worth a try next time out if you haven't already tried them. Cheers!
Thank you! We did actually use it in the mountains a little bit but it mostly led to further confusion haha! We used it in Hungary and it worked great mostly but with Albanian it really struggled unfortunately
Look foreward to your vids on you tube guys since lockdown the tele as been crap we all watch at the oap home
Aaw you’re so kind, thank you! ☺️ That’s lovely to hear
The English are wonderfully eccentric. Thanks. Do you have video of Cornwall. It’s so beautiful there especially western Cornwall.
Thank you haha Yes we have one in this playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLE3m3EshI3c41pKsswt2dzVYtpMiJnUP0
Lake Shkodër just like the city. Serbs call Skadar both the lake and the city
The song that you play at 04:14, where did you got that?
It's a song of the greatest Folk singer of those regions (Sali Mani), titled: Malli i mërgimtarit (Homesick of the emigrant).
If we will meet, I can play it live for you :D :P
Oh thank you, that sounds great! I think we must’ve found it on RUclips, it’s hard to find Albanian folk music we can use in our videos but it adds a lovely tone to them
@@FromRustToRoadtrip for folk musik just tip: Sali Mani, Arif Vladi, Ilir Shaqiri, Shkurte Fejza, Shyhrete Behluli :D
Thank you so much! We will have a listen. We absolutely love Albanian folk music ♥️
When you next travel abroad again I'm going to send you some proper outdoor clothes! You head up into the mountains dressed like you're going shopping in Truro! :)
Haha what do you mean a Hard Rock Cafe jacket and leggings isn’t suitable mountain wear? 😂
7:27 .......some cows just chillin' LOL
😂 No fucks given
Noticed you collected water from the spring. Do you have any system to purify drinking water in your van or do you really on springs being pure?
At the moment, no, we just separate our washing water from our drinking water. The washing water we treat with Milton tablets and the drinking water we collect where possible or buy and store in clean 6-10L bottles
Thank you. Will the lockdown in Cornwall and consequent lack of tourism reduce your travels for the coming off season? I hope not
Unfortunately it will yes :( we’d usually be working flat out at the moment earning a healthy wage but we’re just scraping by on a few days work right now. We’re super grateful we found these current jobs but we can’t save any money
oww nice
I think a gift would have been nice, like rice or coco powder, sugar, flour, but having said that you did well.
Yeah we should’ve really taken a gift, we weren’t sure what the custom was at that point but we will next time for sure
Comming please in North East Albania
MAT arya.
Haha you sure could use a little more getting in shape, but who cares, your videos are so interesting and you take one chalenge after another , step by step. Best content every time !
Definitely should’ve done some warm ups prior to this hike but we’ll have to get in shape for the next one 😂 Thanks so much!
No amount of money would make me to eat that cheesy yougurty concoction, burning question did you manage to finish it all :)
😂😂 I was being polite because they were watching us filming, but it was so lumpy, hence why Ben gave me his portion. We have a kind of deal: when we’re offered dairy products I volunteer, when we’re offered meat he takes one for the team 😂 It would be too rude to say no
@@FromRustToRoadtrip Ben is obviously not stupid I like that arrangement, I can handle a lot of things but if the look, texture and smell reminds me of other things then I'm leaving the party. Glad you enjoyed it please help yourself to more, what your full up, never let me get you a bigger bowl. 😂😂
😂😂 That’s literally what it’s like when they give you rakia- “oh your glass is empty? Please, have another...”
You are a new Edith Durham who trampled those lands 100 years ago
