How did he (Chris) destroy an innocent woman’s life? The Lady’s freaking out thinking a black man’s going to harm her? Chris is a renowned bird-watcher/photographer. All he told her was to put on a leash for the damn dog! Chris, you did the right thing! I salute you! Keep up your work on preserving all birds of all kinds!

Sometimes some of us have the wisdom to see we can choose to do something to make a difference for others. Make lemonade out of lemons so to speak. It’s not fate. This scenario has played out sooo many times in different places, different times, and different people. The difference now is we can prove these injustices with video, AND more importantly society rejects this racism more overtly than we did in the past.

My mother was a birder in the 1960s and would take us to a private bird sanctuary on weekends. I know more bird calls than I care to admit to. Until this morning when there was an inter-active site in the NYTImes (on-line) asking to identify bird calls. I got all of them right (each call had three birds to choose from) so my bird sanctuary days came in handy decades and decades later. Thanks, Mom! PS -- Thanks Mr. Cooper for your power of example -- as a native of NYC I remember that incident so vividly and look how you turned that around -- amazing and wishing you continued success -- maybe I will pop over over for a quiet birding session!

The free Merlin app is great for learning about nearby birds by sound. (I could never see the darn things to identify them visually! Also I did not know a bird could make so many different types of sounds.🥰)
The Merlin app is terrific. I use it all the time to ID birds either visually or by sound. It is amazing how many different calls a single species can have.

My mother loved birds... and cats. There was always some difficulty in reconciling those two. ❤❤ I have some interest in birds, but not like my mother. However, I've been dependent on cats certainly my whole adult life. My current cat, Kayla, is kinda like my wife, which is what some people have said. I'm also trans, so I also understand the attraction of the forest. The birds, the trees, the plants and animals... the cat... don't care that I'm trans. Unfortunately, given our cultural mythology and history, that appears to be a challenge for us humans.
I love Michel Martin’s interviews and really enjoyed Mr. Cooper’s lively response. I saw part of this when it first aired and am now enjoying his book very much. ALL racial incidents are disturbing and too often lead to tragedy. It must be extremely rare for the black person to come out the least injured - mentally or physically. Perhaps everyone should be required to take the program Amy Cooper had - and I wish, WISH we didn’t desperately need them!

Mr. Cooper’s description of what actually occurred in Central Park that day omitted many facts, including some that he himself described on his Facebook page. In the post, Christian recorded his contemporaneous account of what happened in the moments before the camera started rolling. “Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it,” Christian recounted himself saying to Amy. He also shared that he’d pulled out “the dog treats I carry for just for [sic] such intransigence.” Should Amy Cooper have leashed her dog? Yes. Should Mr. Cooper have responded by pulling out what may have been treats, but for all Amy knew may have been something harmful and proceeded to attempt to lure her dog to him? What does “ I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it” mean? For anyone interested in gaining more insight or understanding the context that is regrettably missing from Mr. Cooper’s current account, I recommend Bari Weiss’s 2021 podcast regarding this incident. I was planning on just watching the first part of this interview to understand what Christian has been up to since the incident. But I was glued to my screen the entire 18 minutes. His passion for birds pours out of the screen. It made me excited about the natural world even though I personally have never really given a second thought about birding. The way he speaks is so calming yet engaging. I am so happy he was given a show and am planning to watch the episodes now. I AM NOT A BIRDER. But this short interview made me want to watch/read more of the work Christian Cooper has made. Wow. Consider me a fan.

His role as bird expert on National Geographic is the story here and he seems a wonderful human being. DC is the capitol, it's a unique situation. Too many Members of Congress as it is.

True gentleman doesn't begin to describe Cooper. I wish we could focus on the main culprit of American racism - the black/white wealth and education gap caused and sustained by policies (i.e. systemic racism). Racial bias is subjective and unsolvable, because it's in the mind of the perceiver. Yes, racial bias exists, but focusing on it gets us no closer to solving the bigger problem.
What is "focussing" on it? Because to us who encounter it, and lost our childhoods early because of it we see some paltry acknowledgement by some and denial by most, either because of their "discomfort" or more nefarious reasons. Why instead of diminishing the work that has made the problem and the suffering it causes to finally be SEEN, do we not acknowledge that to solve a problem you need to first acknowledge that it exists? Mr Cooper, deep down inside, knows his comment to the lady about doing what he wanted to do, her not going to like it, and then offering something for the dog to eat, could easily be understood as a serious threat to at minimum, her dog. Shame on him for not acknowledging that. THAT, is why the DA didn’t follow through with the charges; because the DA knew they wouldn’t be able to convince a jury of her guilt because there is so much reasonable doubt.

Everyone who lives in NY has had this kind of experience or has seen this kind of interaction or will eventually. It wasn’t racial, it was a confrontation that got weird. Normal, well adjusted adults get pissed then move on . He was looking for it . Media was exacerbating and fabricating racial tension quite a bit at this exact time in history (recall 2020). He capitalized on it. Getting a show on Nat Geo for this otherwise boring incident may say more about the incident than the supposed incident Itself.
Letting yet another karen get away with it is exactly the problem, they never face consequences for their extremism, this will only entitle more karens to feel stronger and even more entitled tomorrow. Sorry, no. You made it public for what? You want to open people,'eyes? Go to court, get a judgments and damages. Then you will start making a change. I couldn't believe that he talked about "getting his life back". He wasn't fired and didn't have his dog taken away. He didn't receive death threats and was not excoriated and humiliated on a national stage. Amy Cooper behaved badly, but was punished disproportionately, and all of those things happened to her. She was the one who had to "get her life back".
Maybe it was the camera and not the color of his skin that scared her........ Maybe most people do no hang out in the bushes to see birds. I too have been victimized by a man using a camera to capture my image and live stream it. They think they are being discriminated against. Karen Cooper was scared of a person who was pointing a camera at her. Mr Cooper, who could have deescalated her fear immediately and made friends with an early morning dog walker. He could have said "I am a birder. Oh I am so sorry I scared you". He did not need to use a camera. He could have politely let her know not to let her dog chase his birds away. Peace could have happened. Maybe it was the camera and not the color of his skin that scared her........
"He could have politely let her know..." The incident began when Mr. Cooper politely and matter of factly told her she was in a posted area where dogs must be leashed. Ms. Cooper wouldn't comply. Then his response was "If you are going to do what you want..." Then she didn't want to be recorded. She was in no mood for a harmonious resolution as evidenced by her not leashing her dog.
He is a despicable human being. By his own admission immediately after the incident, he was the one who provoked the unfortunate woman by making a sinister threat to do harm to her dog. The entire media ignored this and the poor woman was very unfairly vilified and had her life ruined

Very few people want to look at the truth behind this story. He threatened to hurt her dog, she called the police and described the individual correctly. It sickens me that this birder is now being lauded as some kind of kindly martyr.
Yes he did and she wasn’t the first dog owner that he had done that to. Evidently several dog owners, including at least one who was African American, had complained to the authorities in Central Park about his behavior before the encounter with Amy Cooper took place.
NOPE...she didn't have her dog on a leash, and he told her it was the law to do so. As a Yt woman, it hurt her feelings to be told what to do by a blk person and she pretended he was trying to assault her in order to get him arrested.

How do you know about such a complex feeling as knowing you are gay or straight at 5 yrs old? In fact, how do u know anything about sex at all at 4 or 5? I only started thinking about sex at 8 or 9 bc I was accosted. In the 9th grade I had an automatic orgasm just by looking at my female classmate. That was my attraction to the opposite sex which was automatic. 😊
You are part of the majority, as am I. When you are not in the majority, the ideas of what is expected of you and what is "normal" hang heavy over your head. When adults sexualise children all the time (e.g., boys and girls of preschool age cannot play together without some stupid adult referring to them as a couple), why do you think that an alert child would not pick up on those messages?

Wow… the way he’s rationalizing how he wanted to show her mercy, when she had no mercy for him as she was deliberately lying to the police about him, could have watched him go to jail and have no care for what would have happened to him and his life.
Black people always think we need to take the high road for the greater good, despite our trama. I’m sorry I just don’t get it, and I think he was more worried about being able to continue on in his life and being in the spaces he enjoyed, more than anything else.

Everyone who lives in NY has had this kind of experience or has seen this kind of interaction or will eventually. It wasn’t racial, it was a confrontation that got weird. Normal, well adjusted adults get pissed then move on .
He was looking for it . Media was exacerbating and fabricating racial tension quite a bit at this exact time in history (recall 2020). He capitalized on it. Getting a show on Nat Geo for this otherwise boring incident may say more about the incident than the supposed incident Itself.
Ms. Cooper made it racial when she made a false report to the 911 operator that an black man was threatening her life! That was a crime.

I couldn't believe that he talked about "getting his life back". He wasn't fired and didn't have his dog taken away. He didn't receive death threats and was not excoriated and humiliated on a national stage. Amy Cooper behaved badly, but was punished disproportionately, and all of those things happened to her. She was the one who had to "get her life back".
Maybe it was the camera and not the color of his skin that scared her........ Maybe most people do no hang out in the bushes to see birds. I too have been victimized by a man using a camera to capture my image and live stream it. They think they are being discriminated against. Karen Cooper was scared of a person who was pointing a camera at her. Mr Cooper, who could have deescalated her fear immediately and made friends with an early morning dog walker. He could have said "I am a birder. Oh I am so sorry I scared you". He did not need to use a camera. He could have politely let her know not to let her dog chase his birds away. Peace could have happened. Maybe it was the camera and not the color of his skin that scared her........
"He could have politely let her know..." The incident began when Mr. Cooper politely and matter of factly told her she was in a posted area where dogs must be leashed. Ms. Cooper wouldn't comply. Then his response was "If you are going to do what you want..." Then she didn't want to be recorded. She was in no mood for a harmonious resolution as evidenced by her not leashing her dog.
Only "the camera scared her", that doesn't excuse her false report to police about her life being threatened.
He is a despicable human being. By his own admission immediately after the incident, he was the one who provoked the unfortunate woman by making a sinister threat to do harm to her dog. The entire media ignored this and the poor woman was very unfairly vilified and had her life ruined

Despicable human being is overreaching, but you're right about the media. Our society has to stop seeing racism everywhere all the time; it's misleading and dangerous.
Very few people want to look at the truth behind this story. He threatened to hurt her dog, she called the police and described the individual correctly. It sickens me that this birder is now being lauded as some kind of kindly martyr.

Yes he did and she wasn’t the first dog owner that he had done that to. Evidently several dog owners, including at least one who was African American, had complained to the authorities in Central Park about his behavior before the encounter with Amy Cooper took place.
NOPE...she didn't have her dog on a leash, and he told her it was the law to do so. As a Yt woman, it hurt her feelings to be told what to do by a blk person and she pretended he was trying to assault her in order to get him arrested.

You are part of the majority, as am I. When you are not in the majority, the ideas of what is expected of you and what is "normal" hang heavy over your head. When adults sexualise children all the time (e.g., boys and girls of preschool age cannot play together without some stupid adult referring to them as a couple), why do you think that an alert child would not pick up on those messages?
