That's really well done. I really appreciate what you mean about how focusing on the functional elements first helps constrain the "creative" elements such that it's easier to work on them. Now to convince my DM/wife that I need a laser cutter to make her a fancy DM screen...
Thanks! Yes exactly. I feel like it's hard to have any traction on a problem with no constraints. I often add constraints, even artificial ones to give me something to chew on. "Make a cardboard graffiti in 10 minutes." Is something you can work on right away, you can be creative, and you can judge how you did when you're done. "Make anything you want with any materials you want and finish it whenever" gives you no place to start, or stop, and no way of evaluating how you did. Limitations for the win!
Oh and laser cutters are awesome. I think my next video will be a Tips & Tricks video for lasers because people have been asking for one. Maybe that will help convince your DM/wife. lol
Thanks! I'm starting to recognize repeat commenters here. That's fun! Go go gadget community. My interests are all over the map though so that coupled with low output probably makes it harder to build a community. I'm glad you liked it!
I know that wooden DM screens are really popular gifts for DMs (I know this because I bought one for a friend) but they all seem to have these heavyweight cast iron (or cast iron-esque) hinges. I love the idea of the leather ones. Great idea to incorporate the rivets and magnets into the design too!
Yes, I was so happy with the way it came out. The leather really adds that “Ancient Tome” vibe and folds it more compactly than a hinged setup. Heck I think it’s both stronger and easier to do than say a piano hinge. Not sure why it’s not more common.
Absolutely fantastic work! I just spent the last hour watching the last 3 years of your work. I clicked on “notifications” for the first time ever. I look forward to your next video.
Oh, you're too kind. It is so nice getting a trickle of positive comments. I'm pleased you watched all the videos, they're kind of all over the map topic wise, so I think folks tend to just come in for the video that happens to be in their area of interest. At least you don't have to worry about getting spammed by a huge number of channel uploads. lol. Welcome aboard!
🥰I originally was just going to have it be just a musical short but then the screen came out so nice/was easy enough I just had to make a bigger video about it. Leather hinges really are amazingly good for screens like this. Sturdy compact beautiful and frankly easier than a traditional hinge. I’m surprised 90% of screens don’t use them.
Thanks! I'm glad you like them. I think I simply don't make enough videos for the channel to get any traction. Which is fine. At least I'm getting discerning complimentary viewers. ;]
You make amazing videos! That sanded rivet explainer was awesome. (Probably worthy of its own short) and the overall product looks great. Can’t wait to give a few of these a try myself.
Oh, I'm glad you liked it. I was always a bit sad that video never really got many views. I had originally just wanted to make a short about the build, but it came out so nice I decided to add a bit about the design/technical rivet stuff. Leather + rivets is surprisingly easy to do with a very low bar to entry. (In terms of cost for basic tools, etc.) Definitely go for it. You won't regret it!
@@retrotechjournal Your content is honestly so well produced, I was really surprised when I saw the view count on this one as well. You never know what the algorithm will pick up, but so glad you were in my recommended.

I was really happy with the way the hinges ended up and I feel like the technique is both pretty easy to do and quite forgiving. Good luck with your build!
@@hjorturfreyr Great! We use it most weekend and it looks no different than when new. It's funny because my son is now used to looking at the inside and I'm used to looking at the outside. Metal hinges have this problem that they focus a lot of the bending stresses right at the attachment point. So eventually some screw is going to pull out, etc. The leather is both pliant so it doesn't do that, and has a lot of attachment points. So it's super robust. My D&D GM has a screen that's held together with magnets, which I guess helps it keep from breaking when bad forces are applied, but it does have the problem where once in a while it just falls apart mid game and has to be hastily reassembled. Yes, I too have purchased a heap of scrap leather. Very handy for smaller scale projects. This was left over from a bag I got at a Good Will (a used discount style store) and was only a few dollars. I bought it because I could tell it was real fairly thick leather, and this was the second project I built with that. :] So very economical.
