  • Long days back, one day, a lone lad came to Kolkata from Varanasi only with a Sitar in his hand to find out his fortune. With an intense love for music he took shelter in the houses of music lovers and kept himself engaged in the path of rigorous sadhana. It took sometimes when Kolkata, Bengal and the whole country started to acknowledge his talent. On hearing his Sitar recitals people came to know what is actually the baaj of Jaipur Senia Gharana . This was the starting phase of the career of Sitar Sudhakar USTAD MUSHTAQ ALI KHAN. He was designated as a traditionalist. He adhered strictly and honestly to the real baaj of Jaipur Senia gharana against all obstructions and allurement of the world of name and fame.
This first documentary film , a research work, made by Pandit Jayanta Chattopadhyay, son of Sangeetacharya Vishmadev Chattopadhyay portrays not only the hues of an artist but also different aspects of his personal life. The film presents valuable interviews, opinions by different music personalities and sitar recitals by Ustad himself and his disciples - a must-to-see by the Hindusthani music lovers.

    এক মহান সঙ্গীত সাধকের অসামান্য জীবন কাহিনী। পরিচালক শ্রী জয়ন্ত চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের উপস্থাপনা এক কথায় অনবদ্য।

I am curious about the relationship was between Ustadji and the next generation sitar players, particularly Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Vilayat Khan - one of mutual respect, indifference, admiration or otherwise ? Not much has been written about this anywhere and this is useful to learn, not for mere gossiping but to get a sense of the historical turn of events. Sadly, not very many of Ustadji's earlier recordings are available in the public domain. If a sustained effort could be made in this direction, that would tremendously benefit the "commoner" admirers like me who have no access to the treasures trove kept within the gharana. Thanks very much for sharing this documentary.

Ravi Shankar shared a warm relationship not very sure about Vilayat Khan

I have read that R Shankar respected his style and used his work as a reference to the earliar style of sitar playing. R Shankar also had a similar deference to Balaram Pathak (or hia father?) for similar reasons.
