I'm 51, and I never left the 80s. Never stopped using scrunchies, banana clips, slouch socks... not always easy to find when they get worn out. I still have and still wear a leather jacket and an acid wash jacket from my teens. LOVE the lace fingerless gloves! Still wear belts around my hips, though it gets more difficult to find the right kind. Also, still style my hair the same 80s/early 90s way, without exaggerated volume. Never did go overboard. The 80s sarcasm never left me either!🙃
That's awesome Suzannah! I was so excited to see scrunchies make a comeback. I'll never stop using those!! I wish I still had my old denim jacket, how cool! Thanks for stopping by our channel and sharing your memories. Long live the 80s!!!
@Nesa Lagunas What makes me laugh are these kids who think they're trying to be 80s in their look, don't know how to pull it off properly; AND now and then, if one of the girls gives me a look as if she's asking me who or what I think I'm trying to be (meaning she thinks I'm an old person trying to dress like the younger generation), my response is, "sweetpea, this is the original."😂
@Lise L It's a combination of things, I think. Part of it is having a natural look that can carry it. Have you ever known or met anyone who had a natural look from another era, say, the 40s or 50s? I had a Sunday school student years ago, a 6th grader, who had the look of a child from the early 1900s, just a beautiful old-fashioned, classic look. Also, as I stated in my previous post, I never went overboard with hair volume or bright-colored makeup; I still don't. Think of the Melanie Griffith film "Working Girl". It's the difference between how she looked when she met Harrison Ford and how her friend Cyn, played by Joan Cusack, looked. Funny you should mention bringing the 70s into the 80s - I did that a bit, too! I've never been one to follow the crowd or to care what other people thought. If the pieces are chosen well, the entire ensemble is put together well without looking like a costume, and it's worn with easy-going confidence... it works. I have only ever received compliments for the way I put myself together, whether it's an 80s look or 70s or any of the proceeding three or four decades. It's bringing to mind a particular look or decade without appearing that I'm going to a costume-themed party; and it's not as if I don't wear current fashion, as well. I'm always asked where I get my ideas and asked for advice. I look to the do's and don'ts and inspiration of Hollywood designers like Edith Head, Rett Turner, Bob Mackie, William Travilla. Since my previous post, though, my banana clips broke. Cheap things from Walmart.🙄😄 That's all right. I've been keeping more to the Boho/Stevie Nicks look these days.
I did hear the banana clips came back in style !oh wow i have not put one in my hair also for 30 years lol! i remember loving the glam look of it and illusion of having longer hair then what i did have. you did a good job looked cute! i was excited when the scrunchies came back in style a few years back and i saved all my vintage ones and bought some new too. it's funny the super younger gen z think it is a new trend lol!
Ha I loved my banana clips and lost most during a clean out at our place . I got some recently and have a tip ( I have long curly hair so they worked pretty easily and fast for me) put your hair in a pony tail with a scrunchie first , then the clip as you did but the scrunchie makes it easier ; holds the hair ( then just remove the scrunchie once your clip Is in ) so much easier !! 🙂
I was seriously non-fashionable in the 80's and never used one of these! Haha! As always, Abby you make everything look so easy 😜💜💙 Take care, and have a wonderful and blessed day ---Stacy 😍💚
Hi there John! I had totally forgotten about those ribbon braided barrettes until you mentioned them. I remember people making and selling them at our local craft fairs. Hmm... I've never heard of Hires, but we love root beer!
I just showed my friend these at dollar tree last week. Lol I remember having to tease my hair and use a ton of hairspray to get the to stay in because my hair is so fine
I hadn't even thought of checking there, great deal! I noticed mine was starting to slip as the day went on. I ended up using some dry shampoo and clipping it back in a bit higher, which did the trick. Thanks for stopping by Kelly!
Yes!! We've thought about doing that. It's hard to find a fully-functioning 80's camcorder these days. We've bought a few on Ebay with minimal success, but we did finally get one that actually works. We've been using it to play and digitize our old tapes but haven't tried recording on it. Sounds like a fun challenge! Thanks :)
With how they design the headrests in car seats now, I may have to start trying this if I just want to put my hair up in a pony. The car seats nowadays make it difficult to do any kind of updo if you know what I mean.
I like the banana clips. Scrungies and i love the hair clips not claw clips. But the hair clips made by goody from 80s. Came in 3 pack in white blue red etc. Cant find them anywhere.
Your hair needs to have more volume to help the clip stay in. Try curling it (as I did in the video) or you could try adding hairspray or dry shampoo to your hair before styling it. Sometimes it’s easier if your hair isn’t freshly washed, does that make sense? Hope these tips help!
Thanks for the throwback I used to love Banana clip. It was easy to use and made an awesome prop to be levar Burton (from star trek) for Halloween. Which is how I just found your channel when trying to explain that to my child lolbvs. New subbie here :-)
Welcome to our channel Nicki, glad you found us! Banana clips are definitely a fun throwback. I used to do the same thing with the whole Star Trek getup, lol! That’s so fun! 😆

@Lise L I'm a thrift store Shopper, too! I'm going to wind up in the Poorhouse if I don't stay out of Savers!
Even the music brings memories the 80’s sound ❤❤❤❤❤
I never stopped using them, lol! Told EVERYONE that made fun of me that I was bringing them back!!!
You did it!! I admire your perseverance 😉
I remember them pulling my hair, bottom part - OUCH - loved wearing them though!
Hi Cheryl! I don't remember that, but hopefully they've improved the design to keep it from pulling your hair. Yikes!

Me too!! They are classic 80's for sure! Thanks for watching :)

Great idea!! It's a bit of a struggle holding the hair while you're trying to clip the banana clip with the other hand, ha! Thanks for the tip!
that was cool...fun to watch and turned out awesome...thanks for the memories...the 80s was my time...i miss it too...really bad...have a sweet sunday

I wore these all the time! But I had a perm and didn't curl it. I liked your tip on curling it! Brilliant!

Of course!
OMG my nanna used to do this with my hair alot like this for school when I was little!!

Remember ribbon braided barrettes? Those were very common in the 1980’s. I, also, wish that Hires Root Beer would make a successful return.

You guys should start recording some videos with an 80s camera

LOL! Probably not, but it's a quickie up-do if you're in a hurry!
Love this hairstyle

I miss the old style banana clips that were separated and would interlock

I’m lazy and flip my head upside down to do mine.
Whatever works! I must admit, I've adopted the whole "lazy bun" method lately because I too am lazy, LOL!
Love the aluminum buckets hanging in your bathroom wall. Your har looks beautiful.
Thanks so much! 😊 The buckets came from IKEA, by the way.
Well I'm in UK and can't buy them in shops , however thanks to Internet shopping they are everywhere so bought loads
Glad you could get some, and hooray for Internet shopping!
Found one today in Superdrug!
You can wear those on the 80s cruise!

Welcome 😊
The banana clips make for chic Mohawk styles; you get a great look without having to shave the sides of your head. Hahaha!
Yes!!! Not shaving the sides of your head seems like the prudent thing, lol!
Banana clips dont cause me breakage like hair ties do. It also makes my pontail look longer and more volume.
Wow❤

Agreed. Let's bring them back!!
