    *Some more info and thoughts:*
    - It has been pointed out that there are replacement gears available that have been made from a mould of an intact original gear, as discussed in the video. However, two of these gears cost more than a cassette deck like this is worth around here. So such a repair would be uneconomical.
    - While I am taking part in this debate, I am not looking for ways to reproduce gears myself. I don't consider many cassette decks worth the effort of reproducing gears.
    - These broken gears each have 42 teeth. The teeth have a special shape, they are not just triangles arranged around a circle.
    - Apparently some high end filament based 3D printers are able to achieve a print resolution of 0.1 mm, which would be good enough.
    - The prints from resin based 3D printers are apparently not long term stable. UV light is used to harden the printed resin, but any further UV exposure (admittedly unlikely inside a cassette deck) further hardens the resin, so eventually the material becomes brittle.

Unless it's a Nakamichi, Sony ES or another well-sought-after high end deck, maybe a Pioneer CT-F1250 or CT-A9 or some older Duals, getting replacement gears is not worth the effort. Especially not for a rather questionable dual well Technics, probably with already-worn Ferrite heads that can't even reach 15 kHz 🤷🏼‍♂️
Technics had some killer decks back in the day, but this isn't one of them.

Agree that this deck is probably not worth the effort, I've seen these gears on line as single units and larger quantities.
My buddy who has just emigrated to oz is a Horologist and regularly files teeth in brass discs to make replacement cogs, using the old cog as a template.
I used his equipment, desktop lathe, to ensure the 3D printed disc was round and the hole was centered.
TUsinghen, using the old cog as a template I filed the teeth with a small triangular file that matched the pitch on the original cog.
It certainly did a good job on my 30 year old JVC twin deck

I would have guessed the tape transport was from Philips as they were using such soft plastic basically everywhere, but it makes sense it comes from Alps.
I can confirm the noise increases when the gear is replaced with a harder plastic type: I have a Philips CD 204 with a new gear in the drawer open/close mechanism and a portable CD player Philips D6800 with a new gear in the pick-up sledge movement. In both cases they work fine, but they are much noisier, the portable CD player especially is very noisy when changing track. But both gears are not critical for audio quality and I can live with the extra noise. (also both gears were already available, I just ordered them, no need to 3D design and print gears !)

I remember a little over 20 years ago noticing how many VHS VCRs were eating tape and it was almost always caused by the reel drive rubber tire glazing over or drying out. I was glad that the Panasonic VCRs we had at home used one of those soft (urethane?) rubber gears that never caused that problem and would seemingly last a *really* long time.
Here we are a '*really* long time' later...and the rubber tires are looking a little better now since they're generic and more easily substituted.
Not going to argue since you have more (and more interesting) decks come through your shop that might be a better use of the parts from this broken one.

Ugh I hated those awful tyres - high failure part found in a few 80s-era boomboxes as well; a royal pain to source and replace with new. The take-up spindle won't rotate if the tyre breaks, fails, or disintegrates, thus eating tapes.

I bought a replacement resin printed gear for my technics RS-B55 as it had the flexible gear with 3 teeth missing. The clonking has gone, but there is a low mechanical noise on playback, since I just enjoy playing cassettes and not a hi-fi buff it's not a big problem, but I agree with what you say in your video.

That gear is easy to obtain for $11 shipped. It's out of Russia, and also another guy in netherlands. I've bought about 16 or so already to fix many Rs-Tr series decks. Just search eBay for the Technics part number ..you will get it.
Also there is a video on how to fix that. There is no need to take anything off the back of the transport contrary to popular instruction.
I've successfully repaired over 10 Rs-Tr decks already.
You are right..you can't and should not 3d print that. With gears you have to respect module and pitch! You have no 3d printer that can respect that resolution....yet
Sorry but I disagree completely on the soft plastic. I can and did replace several and hear no noise or problem. I only can't speak to longevity.

So I would need to buy two of these gears at a total cost of about 22€. The problem is, a cassette deck like this around here is worth maybe 10€ on a good day. So such a repair would not be economical. Of course, if there is sentimental value involved, this can be very different, but I personally don't want to loose money on my repair projects.

@@DrCassette That's a shame - I get about $100/usb ea serviced and repaired on Ebay - not much profit but enought to make it worthwhile. My bigger problem with these decks and I'm sure you may run across it:
Sometimes the takeup hubs will seem to "catch" as they spin and drag. This happens because if you prise off the hubs on the front side, there is a little plastic collar against the back metal plate that centers the spring and that same spring rides on it. This hub will split, cause drag, and the spring will catch on the even minute split. I'm currently trying just some small flat plastic washers, but have only had limited success...
Some of the newer decks i.e. with the motorized eject and rounded front are even more expensive to fix - the pinch rollers go bad and they are very specific 13.5mm with a strange collar. I cant find them for less thatn $10 shipped * 4 =$40...Now it's starting to get hard to make it worthwhile with those. (example RS-TR170)
If you know a solution to either problem, I'd appreciate it.
I just hate to see these discarded.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  3 года назад

@@jimb032 I actually have not come across this problem with the takeup hubs yet. I have had hubs that had seized because of bad grease. Cracked plastic parts are always annoying. Indeed replacement pinch rollers are extremely expensive, I unfortunately have not yet found a better, low cost source for them either...

Measuring the exact dimensions of the gear is already hard enough, even if you could replicate it, it would never be 100% accurate unless you have the original cad drawings for it. The original moulds where probably made of steel and with very fine tolerances. I’m always amazed by how mechanical engineers can work with such small, precise dimensions.

Not sure if it would work, but could you grind the teeth off the gears and use an O-Ring or tire in place? On the hub gears, can they be made to use a tire as well? Maybe worth a try just to see what happens for curiosity sake.

I've had similar problems with a Philips D8614 Boombox, but in my case the gears just rotted inside the machine and instantly broke into pieces. I asked a friend if he could 3D print me the gears, but for now he only managed to print me just one as he is having some issues with his printer. At least that one gear works just fine. Also, from what I know, these gears are made out of TPU.

I fixed one of such gears but the plastic was harder - I used JB Weld Epoxy to rebuild the broken gear and filled the material to required shape - time consuming process. As whether such soft plastic is really required - maybe Matsushita, sorry Alps, made it too soft compromising the longevity.
Actually I would like to see the Uher deck mechanism to compare design and kind of materials used in it - hopefully less plastic.

Thanks for your offer, but this cassette deck is now gone...

Even some Nakamichi decks employ plastic gears - only to fail a decade or two later. This is poor design/engineering.
The Sony decks I have employ a drive shaft on to a rubber tyre - effectively a friction drive with acting slippage, these are theoretically repairable.
Pity about the Technics DC, and rather annoying too!

A Nakamicchi would be worth repairing though. Technics - not so much.

@@Lesrevesdhiver Agreed, but finding suitable gears may be a big problem.
