it really is empress own reluctance to let go why all this shit happened in the palace in stead of a thriving kingdom. ruyi never wanted to be empress but loved hongli so she then accepted. but its literally the only reason. she loved hognli and promised to be by him.

I don't get why he protected empress fuca when ruyi came out of cold palace, yet he couldn't do the same for ruyi when she was 2nd empress. You claim to love the woman yet the most difficult moments of her life was because of you. He doesn't deserve her
