Moog Mavis Is More Complex Than Its Size Suggests

- Moog commissioned me to make a video on their new analog semi-modular synthesizer Mavis. Mavis is meant to be an easy entry for everyone wanting that Moog sound on a budget. While its a very good "my first hardware synth", it is surprisingly complex and useful even if you got a bunch of synths already.

Lovely sounds as always :) Thanks so much for the shout-out!!
I’m going to have to watch your review soon! This will probably be my next synth.
2:49 This man actually just said that the waves don’t jiggle, they fold. That’s just quality writing, right there.
yes! 😂
Finally we have a long awaited monophonic box that can do beep boop beep
Moog Volca?! Great review, Hainbach has really shown a lot of what it can do! Good to see Moog adding more interesting and affordable options to us musicians and noisemakers!
Molca
Well said
Its good to see the REAL synth makers , giving Uli a run for the money , and giving us poor musicians a REAL choice,- 🐉
You can always control the folder index by mixing CV with your audio before the folder-remember that a folder is also a VCA. I only wish the Mavis had a bigger mixer or more envelopes. You can also generate more foldable harmonics by slewing your waves through the filter before the folder. Wavefolding is so much fun. ❤
Your Mavis Bass track really bought me back to my teens, and Aphex Twin Analogue Bubblebath. Lovely.
As a yank from stl who loves all your videos- I’m a number stations / krautwork / eno enthusiasts- I bought wires . It’s so amazing and I just want to thank you for everything you do! You are a inspiration ! -R
That piece at 6:30 is incredible moody! Well done Stefan!
My waves don't jiggle jiggle, they fold
Fucking right 😂 like the best wrapper line EVER.
Building a synth on a family vacation? Hahaha, you absolute mad man.
First off, the wavefolder’s oscilloscope view is wild! I’ve never seen a wavefolder architecture like that.
Second, never discredit wavefolder-filter feedback loops. They’re incredible, especially as the vca happens post-filter, pre-feedback on this. It’s exciting
that sounds really cool. im new to this - how does one make a "wavefolder-filter feedback loop" happen?

This looks amazing! Great demo as always Hainbach :)
Love the concept of assemble-yourself-a-synth, lets you look at the things inside without necessarily messing the whole thing up.
1:45 - Average person on a family holiday: Sleeps in
HAINBACH on a family holiday: Assembles a semimodular synthesizer while everyone else sleeps in
:D
Total dad move :D
Hot damn, that opening track is just wonderful Herr Heinbach!
Fantastic 'sonic investigations" as ever. Vielen Dank 👍
The bass you get from this little box is MASSIVE :-o
God I just bought a DFAM, my first moog and analogue synth, now I have the fever and want more moogs and this looks gorgeous
Sadly, Moog has never made a cowbell synth.

Your channel is one of my favourite RUclips channels ever. So inspiring! Thank you.
Very inspiring demo of the Mavis 👍👍👏👏
I am always so impressed by you. Such a true artist.
Pretty cool instrument in the vid & yes loved the tune at the end of your vid, so I can add it to my playlist, wished it was on the iTunes Store!🙂🔊
There's some lovely sounds here! Definitely one of my favorites you've featured.
Great tutorial and review
Very nice review with rhythmic and musical familiarity. Great value video. Thanks H!
Beautiful sequences✨! SQ-1 is always such a great piece of supporting gear.
Always a good day when Moog announces a new synthesizer with an accompanying Hainbach-vid 🙌🏼
I'd actually like the option to purchase an even lower cost full-kit version that I have to fully assemble, soldering and all. More fun and more rewarding in the end.
That would be cool, but it seems like something Moog wouldn't do. Maybe as cooperation with another company?
Love that track at 10:10… what a great sound…
What knob do you use at 11:04?
It's always good to be back..
Never thought I'd see the words "budget" and "Moog" in the same sentence.
Well, it's 400 euro.
Still cost more than any 'budget' instrument on the market.
Hainback, you are an inspiration to watch 🤗
aw man after hearing like one second of this thing play i now want one so bad XD
Great sounds !
Nice sir! It's all about character 🔥❤️
That bass! Wow! Beautiful!
Sounds massive ❤️
Yes you can. Noticed it later in the video!
I'd imagine this patches in some crazy ways with the Subharmonicon?
Absolutely! I just did not have more time to film that.
Looks great.
This seems like the perfect thing to team up with my microfreak
I have a Moog Werkstatt + CV Expander. I am wondering if there is value in adding a Moog Mavis to turn it into a 2 oscillator "stereo" synth. There are some good RUclips videos of people making good ambient music on the Werkstatt, nothing yet on using the two together. (I have a heap of other synths incl a few other semi-modulars. Mavis will join my DIY bench if I get it).
Funky at 8mins in. Such a great squelch going on.
Wie wunderschön der bei Dir klingt.
Hehe, I just bought one and realized to late it doesn't have MIDI. 😀 No big deal, I can use the West Pest as a MIDI->CV converter if needed. They do work well together. It's hard to make one patch with both, but doable. But it's very nice to be able to use the Mavis envelope and filter with the West Pest oscillator+wavefolder.
The wave folder on this, sounds just like the metlliser from the Arturia Microbrute.
I always wondered what that metalizer was on the MB. Do you think it is a wavefolder? I dont get much use out of it, as it sounds so ranky. But if i know it is a wave folder, maybe I'll explore it futher.
@@MrStupidHead yes it’s a wave folder 👍🏻
Missing the link to buy and kick back to you 😉
Funny to see the Mavis is built and the OP-1 is falling apart. Amazing what you got from this little devil.
Thanks H!
Aaaaaa the Mavis as he would say
Great to see a Moog that doesn't sound like every other Moog. This is arguably the most interesting instrument they make.
Hello,
I’m rather new to electronic music and have a basic question. The Mavis says that the output is +-5v but the OP-1 expects a line level input of +-1v. Is there a problem running the output of the mavis into the OP-1? Can I hurt the OP-1?
Charlie in Virginia.
Wont hurt it, just watch the overload light on the OP-1.
Reminds me to their old Moog Werkstatt
this is fantastic, thanks. I just got one and I love it, learning for the first time. do you have any patch instructions, especially for your groove box idea at 7:05?
When you plug the SQ1 in..where does it go? Into the Gate, or the 1V/OCT? Thanks! Cool Demo.
Both!
@@Hainbach Thanks!
Thanks Hanibach, gud vid...
Competition for the West Pest in the form of an affordable Moog? Yes please! Such exciting times for synth people!
Edit: the lack of MIDI, a built-in sequencer, and specially CV modulation of the wave folder are a bit of a downer.
Wave folders are fun, but in this package, it just doesn't bring enough to the table.
agreed. without those things i feel it's over priced. Slightly diff beasts i know, but for a cheaper price i think a crave is more useful and sounds great.
really nice stuff! Reminded me of Liam Mour's stuff! 👌❤️
2:55 has anybody else spent enough time on TikTok recently that they also immediately heard the "my money don't jiggle jiggle, it folds" audio? Just me?
It wasnt just you
This synth has some depth, I’m going to have to budget my dollars right and get one.
I want to live in your studio 😻
For a moment I thought my RUclips Premium did expire, cause I got an "ad"... But it was the movie haha...
Hi, this is a great video!! Thank you for showing us so many sounds. Could you tell me where we can get more patch cords than just the 5 that are sent with the synthesizer, in the box? Also, is it possible to use as many patch cords as we want to obtain more sounds?
You can get them at any music store that has Eurorack. And more patching does in deed more Sounds
@@Hainbach Thanks a MILLION for your help!!!!!!
any way to process audio through the mavis?
I have barely touched my synths this year and I'm about to buy another one, aren't I...
Great Video Hainbach. Always good for plenty of musical applications. That's something many reviewers miss or even lack.
Would you please tell what your sonic six clone is? Somehow that escaped me!
Yup the real deal
At 10.30... that sounds lovely....nice work @Hainbach I have the subharmonicon, are these the same small dials you refer to ? If so, where can i get overlays for these ???
Thanks a lot, kudos. Note that loopop review is quite musical too ;-)
Has this film come out yet? I want to watch it solely to listen to your score lol. Also where may I find other projects you’ve scored?
This is scheduled for a theatrical release this winter. Here are some other films:

What happened to your OP-1? I see two keys missing @ 5:40. Very interesting sounds from the Mavis!
Regarding controlling the wave folder by CV, what about controlling a servo motor from the CV to turn the knob?
Well you can do that, but it’s rather complicated.
Very nice presentation (As always) but there are better synths for less money out there. And for me, MIDI is a must. Even in my DAWless studio with hardware sequencers I still rely on MIDI.
What style knob will go on these?
2:56
It don’t jiggle jiggle- it folds
Hi Hainbach, great video and amazing music! What is the reverb on the mavis you used in the two track and op-1 sample example, also in the track under the movie scene you used? Thanks!
That is the great British spring reverb
wonderful! I only have those impulse responses by past to future, but the real thing is from another world. most likely those sound quite different from unit to unit, too…
The jam at 10 min is that stuff I love. Do you have any releases that are "braindance" stuff like this?
Nice! The soundtrack pieces remind me of Pyrolators Inland :)
Ohhhhhhh :D What is that 'cover' that sits on top of the keyboard that holds the Mavis? Is it all part of the keyboard or a separate accessory? I LOVE IT!!
That is all one synth 😃
@@Hainbach details. I must know more about it please :D.
I am new to Synths and Analog waves and all, but I am very interested in trying to understand and begin using them for sound additions to my instruments. Would this product be a good starting point in not only being able to learn easier than on a huge Modular setup, but also take me a long way into Synth rhelm?
Nice video! I’m just getting into modular, question. Could I sequence this with the Korg SQ-1?
I wish we had all that stuff in the 1980s and 90s.
EVERYONE and their mother in synthesizer-youtube-land got a Mavis from Moog! I counted 9 (nine!) among my subscriptions, and all on the same day. I subscribed to those channels because I (used to) value their diversity and original individual approaches, but this kind of thing is happening more and more often and fosters a sheep mentality among youtubers and users alike. Every youtuber knows that publishing a bad review on the release date puts them at risk of being left out of the loop for future releases, which is bad news for their channel‘s monetization. Even if the manufacturers don’t spell it out...they don’t need to, because „baah-baah!“...The synth world needs their own Glenn Fricker.
Synthpunk has released some interesting videos about the Mavis.
@@wrenchposting9097 thx, I‘ll check it out.
What happened to your op-1? Looks like it walked into a door!
How would you go about finding replacement knobs? Are they a standard pot size?
The pots are NOT chassis mounted! So knobs with a set screw, no pressure fit! They look like the same 6mm generics on the Werkstatt-01.
@@richardcfrost61 Thanks!

8:19 Brings in some Aphex Twin (Or rather Polygon Window) vibes here Check the Surfing on Sinewaves album. Nice synth by the way. Added to the wishlist ;-)
Fun size
2:55 how many takes did that take without cracking up? lol
Anyone know of a good desktop drone typa synth? Looking to make some pretty expansive drones on new tracks.
Depending on what you're looking for but from personal experience and in this context, the Neutron is the right tool. Two nice, fat sounding VCO's, noise, a multimode filter, modulable analog BBD delay and overdrive offer a rich and very tweakable sound. The LFO, S&H, two envelopes, two attenuators (one of them a VCA) and a slew limiter allow great modulation potential. All that turns it into a great standalone drone unit or at most with some reverb or a modulation effect (lovely on phaser).
But I'll gladly expose that the S&H and the slew limiter are NOT precise enough to use them for pitch signals. And there are no convenient FM inputs for the VCO's, just the v/o ins.
Seriously, if you want something more premium look for something as versatile as the Neutrom or just make a modular synth. If you're looking more for a polysynth type deal then I don't know.
he hainbach, how did u sequenced the juno in this jam? it's not the internal arp, right?
It is! Triggered by the 606
Was that your Serge case? Curious about who made it!
9:24 got real stinky, but you patched it so quick no-one smelt it
At 9min I was eagerly awaiting the sound you were referring to and by God that was a warm soggy slopper
4.21 - you are ready for Sonar...
4:18 uhh excuse me mr hainbach what is this buzz saw
Fallen what happened fall in life with bloom and fail to boil in advance,

First of all can enter.
It's a nice synth, and the voicing seems OK. Filter definitely has a rich, wet "squelch" to it. On the other hand, the wavefolder is a bit "meh" TBH (I much prefer the sound of the WF in my 0-Coast). The lack of CV control is a bit of an oversight as is the absence of even a basic MIDI implementation. At that price point you're getting awfully close to MakeNoise territory, without some of the features.
Can you pass stuff through its filter? That was the thing I found limiting on the Werkstatt, I think it required some kind of mod to patch things directly through the filter.
You can, see the TR606 into wavefolder part at the end
