Most people do love the Special 20, I am one of the few who can easily take it or leave it, that said, try a Special 20, all of those tons of people can't be wrong, but if for some reason it just doesn't feel "right" to you try a Marine Band in the Hohner line, (about the same price as the Special 20 if you want to stick with Hohner). My first harmonica was a Marine Band back about 50+ years ago that my dad got me to start me out and that might be why I still prefer the MB style of harp. Also, like Liam said - steer clear of the ultra cheapies (under 25 bucks) with 3 exceptions - the Easttop T008K (or L) and the Kongsheng Amazing 20 (Special 20 clone) or the Kongsheng Ting harp.. Also PLEASE PLEASE do not buy those horrid plastic sets such as Roadhouse Blues, Hoodoo Blues, Piedmont or Blue Ice (not sure if they still make that one or not) you really ARE better off with ONE decent harp than 3-7 ghastly ones.
I agree. Special 20 works straight out of the pack. Learning to bend is really hard on a cheap instrument so do yourself a favour and get a decent harmonica if your want to see yourself progress.
Thank you for explaining the different types of harmonicas. The Chromatic,Chord and diatonic are the ones i would love to learn😁👍 I own a Weekender hohner international.
Thank you for the very clear and constructive advice. Currently, I am using JDR models. I feel they are better than East Top and will try Hohner Special 20.
Happy New Year, hope you are well... Great Video... I remember buying a learn the harmonica package for about £50 which came with a hohner riverband in the Key of C... stuck with it afew months and moved to a Seydel 1847 Silver in C and later in A... never looked back 👍 Forgive me, but I think a small window of opportunity in the video has been missed... with regards to what diatonic Harmonica key normally suits what Genre on music... also the key of the instrument against the key of the song.
What is the difference between HOHNER CX12 Chromatic harmonica & HOHNER SPECIAL 20 Diatonic harmonica in terms of the sound & the range of notes produced for new beginner’s learning purposes? Can you do the demo ? Tk u
They're just different types of harmonica with their own strengths. CX12 is more often used for classical and jazz, Special 20 is more often used for blues, rock and country music. CX12 is a chromatic harmonica, you can get "all the notes" but it doesn't have the same expressive bending. On a Special 20 you can get great expression and emotive bending but it is harder to fill in all the "missing notes".
I was kind of jamming around the Lil Liza Jane melody. Here's a play-along video to get you started on the basics of it - ruclips.net/video/AtSzeqetXwI/видео.html

My kids have been playing the Suzuki AW 'Airwave' Diatonic Harmonica for the last year. I think it’s time to upgrade to the Special 20 :)

It was recommended to me to get a Hohner Marine Band in key of C to start out with - any comments on this? thx
Good harp - I find that the wooden comb swells but it's not a problem for everyone. Best of luck on your harmonica journey!

When i go to your link it takes the F type, is this the right one or the c-mayor one?
Key of C is probably best - you can select the key on the Amazon product page.
Does hohner have in B ? I sing in B mostly.
Yes you can buy harmonicas in any key from all the major manufacturers.
nice to know im not the only one with such fucked up teeth (my 1 is also in the middle)
