    this is the second video of yours i’ve ever watched (the first being your HP ranking/review). for someone who has such a new channel, i’m blown away by how much of a “natural” you are at this. no script/editing, etc.
    i’ve had a channel for over a year but have never uploaded a single video due to shyness and just not feeling like i could put out a video like this. you make it look so easy!! your content is so easy to watch meaning it just feels like i’m listening to a friend talk. it’s so calming and also entertaining.
    fantastic job and good luck with your continued success and subscriber count!

      Wow, I really appreciate your incredibly kind comment. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos! That was always my hope with this channel is that I could just casually talk about books and engage with others who share a love for these incredible pieces of art in a laid back, conversation style. Really happy it resonated with you.
      I think you should give it a shot and you might surprise yourself. No need to be shy about it. You’ve got it!! 💪

    I don't read westerns, but I gave lonesome Docve a try in 2020 when I had nothing but time, and I loved it. The Dresden Files is a fun series. The first book is good, but they just get better the more you read. Lots of action, some very funny scenes and a great magic system.

    A Song of Ice and Fire is the cornerstone of modern, gritty fantasy. Authors like Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, and Robin Hobb all look up to George R.R. Martin as a legendary mentor. Sure, the series moves even slower than The First Law and is more political and complex, but the depth of the dialogue, characters, lore, and story is unmatched. I've read A Song of Ice and Fire four times now, revisiting it every four years, and I always find something new. The subtexts, symbolism, and mythological references are endless.
    But here's the thing: this series isn’t about flashy magical wizards and constant spells. There’s magic, and when it appears, it’s both terrifying and breathtaking, exactly how magic should feel. You won’t find it on every page, but when it hits, it leaves you dizzy and awestruck. Just read it carefully, immerse yourself, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience-and trust me, you’ll want to reread it afterward!

    • @ericbowdenbooks
      @ericbowdenbooks  16 дней назад +1

      Everything you said makes me even more excited to start this series. I cannot wait. I saw an interview where Martin said magic shouldn’t have explanations and should be something dangerous, out of control, and not well understood. Such a cool perspective on it.

    I started getting back into reading a little year ago and the book that got me going was Shadow and Claw, it’s incredible and can’t wait to reread, just know that characters don’t have silly names their old saints’ names and you need look up origins of saints or any name (of animal or Latin) and it helps you understand everything, it’s soo good. Also after you’re a few chapters in listen to the Alzabo Soup podcast they breakdown the entire series chapter by chapter and helped with a lot of things that completely went over my head! Cheers!

I cannot wait to start it, and I’ll definitely check out that podcast. I’ve heard there are just so many hidden details and secrets that people continue to find on each reread. I also think the unreliable narrator aspect is super cool as well. Thing with The Witcher is, that the real plot doesn't start until book 3. The first 2 books: The last wish and Sword of Destiny, are short stories, one of the short stories links directly to the plot of the rest of the books.
    Also the show sucks and they made up everything after Season 1, which I don't think is good either, but at least, it is somewhat similar. Although they didn't make it well and it's confusing as they mix books 1, 2 and 3 throughout the season.

    • @ericbowdenbooks
      @ericbowdenbooks  13 дней назад +1

      Interesting, I wonder what I’ll think of it when I read it. Based on that description, it might not be my favorite 😅

    • @loati94
      @loati94 13 дней назад +1

      @@ericbowdenbooks I think for this reason, the English version publishers consider the third book as the first one and The last wish and Sword of destiny are considered 0.5 and 0.7 instead of #1 and #2. I read the Spanish versions, they've been around since 2002 and I kind of prefer them in spanish than in english, but it might be nostalgia.
      If you think of the Last Wish as a novel you might not like it, It's more like following Geralt on some contracts, while they introduce characters. If you don't like it then that's fine since everyone has their own taste in stories, writing, pace etc.
      They might not be the BEST series on their own, but when you combine the books with the games it creates a world that feels alive and the amount of references from the books that you find in the games is like nothing I've ever seen.

      Also, a fair warning. The Black Library is rather shit when it comes to physical paperbacks. Books will usually only be in print for 2 years or so and then get taken off for a decade.
      The Horus Heresy books suffer from the same. If you want to go physical, you'll either have to wait for years on end for specific books to come back into the print cycle or pay far too high prices on ebay.

For Old Republic content, check out the Bane trilogy, and whether you're a fan of the SWTOR game or not, some of the novels are really good like Deceived and Annihilation. I would recommend the KOTOR and Dawn of the Jedi comics for more variety.
    I would recommend checking out other eras of storytelling. I fully understand not being a fan of the Disney movies, but a lot of the greatest Star Wars novels come from Disney's canon timeline. A few great starting points are Master and Apprentice, Catalyst, and Shadow of the Sith. Legends has lots of solid stuff too, such as Plagueis, the Han Solo trilogy, and the Kenobi novel. I watched Seasons 1-3 of GOT. I stopped there because I wanted to read the books. I watched the very first Season when it first came out on HBO. Once it started getting popular I kind of stopped watching it. Just like The Walking Dead. I dislike when it gets so popular. I just stop watching the shows and wait until later. Lol

    I honestly didn’t care too much for the road, it was good but it’s my least favourite of the works of Cormac Mccarthy - I found blood meridian, no country for old men and the border trilogy, much better personally. Definitely read blood meridian though.
    Also with the Witcher I found the novels to drag on a bit with far too much filler of various kings, sorceresses and spymasters just chatting and dumping exposition, rather than actual action - which is what I wanted after being introduced to it, playing the Witcher 3. If you were to boil down what actually happens with Geralt (the titular character) it would span only a handful of chapters if that. It excels better with its short stories - which you have being, the last wish (and the sword of destiny). So yeah stick with those for now I’d say. It’s one of the few where the adaption (in this case the games which are actually sequels rather than book adaptions) are better than the source material - but still way way better than the Netflix series

      The Road will definitely not be my last of his. I will for sure journey deeper into his work, especially with Blood Meridian next. I’ve heard great things about the Border trilogy, but I don’t really know what it’s about. Definitely worth the read?
      As for the Witcher, that makes total sense. I’ve heard the series is kind of all over the place. I am going to be playing through the Witcher 3 for the first time while reading the book so that’ll be a fun experience. Thanks for the info about it!

      It depends. I personally wouldn’t start with it if you’re just getting into fantasy, but it’s also not the most difficult series to read and some people could absolutely start with it and love it.

    I find it so strange that you're a writer, yet haven't read a lot of the "required" reading for most people. You must have a very different perspective on story by having some gaps of influential works in your writing development. I wonder if you would accidentally think you came up with something unique only to find its a popular series/story by accident.

    the berserk 1997 anime covers the golden age arc better and is more horrifying, it is 25 eps, start with episode 2 though first as ep 1 spoils what happens after the eclipse and the English dub is great for its time as well, berserk 2016 anime is regarded as awful
