This video is very surreal. Excellent term. The sad evolution of shopping over time. The saddest part is that when it was "open" and you were there, it was just an empty husk of what it was during its real heyday. When you show the footage you took while it was "open" you notice no one is there. Its almost totally empty even then. It Opened in 1968-1969. Beautiful wrought iron sculptures with lights, giant hanging light fixtures with water features. Every space was open with some retail shop. Shoe stores, tobacco store, Sears, Pennys, Lazarus, Parking for 5000 cars, and 75% of those spaces had cars parked in them. Workers who worked there or shoppers inside looking for items to buy. The death of disposable income, inflation, crime, many things factor into the death of this mall. But I was there when it was booming, and this video shows the real casualty of progress, evolution of society, economics, and social change. Thanks to you for making footage that will remind us of what this was. It will be demolished soon. Like Westland and all that will remain are videos like yous. Kudos.
Thank you so much, your kind words are what inspire me to make these videos! It’s so sad to see a lot of the places I’ve visited, including Westland being demolished. For some reason, Eastland always resonated with me. I’m happy I can share this so that Eastland can live on forever!
Back when I was younger we would Christmas shop there with ny grandma she worked there at Lazarus restaurant years ago.. she's not longer here an seeing everything else go too is hard to see. Change is hard for me.. this place used to be amazing.. I even worked there for a while at the portrait studio. Great memories in those walls.. sad they let it go so bad.
Again, after re uploading this video, i will comment again. I say this was epic! I didn't get to express that on the first upload. So here i am to do that. Yes this mall has declined so much within 3 years. Wow! So did Eastland just closed recently, within a few months ago? It looked like a mall i would have enjoyed shopping at in its hey day. Thank you again for uploading this video and being one of the many urbex I respect. You rock!
Hey! Thank you for your kind words, and re watching!! Sorry there was an issue with the music, so glad you enjoyed! It’s definitely crazy to see how much it’s changed. Eastland closed almost 2 years ago in 2022.
Well done. By 2021 it was a shell of its former self after being in steady decline for about 20 years, accelerating fast in the last 10 or so through its December 2022 closure. In the 90s the mall was crowded every weekend and on the weekends leading up to Christmas the I-70 exits to Hamilton Road could be backed up for a mile or more, believe it or not. In 2018-2019 the mall had a little life brought into it when Akiba arcade was open in the old Victoria's Secret space. Once that closed in mid-2019 there was little to keep it open as almost every 1st rate store had long been closed by that point, with only a few mom and pop's open and maybe 3 food court vendors. The mall was scheduled to close at the end of 2022 on New Year's Eve but actually was forced to close about a week early when a freak warm spell..then cold snap..the warm snap caused pipes to burst in the mall just before Christmas. (same fate also happened to 2 large apartment buildings near downtown from the same weather systems). It's crazy how this went from a nearly empty but intact mall just a few years ago to the modern version of Dixie Square, and it's only 2 miles from where I live
The pandemic had led to a massive reduction in sales for almost all malls! The Westminster mall in California, will be permanently closing in 2025 for good!
This breaks my heart. The tea room at Lazarus was such a special place for me and my grandmother. Thank you for sharing.
Amazing video as always John! It’s crazy to see how much Eastland has changed 2 years after its closure.
Thank you Andrew!!! It was a surreal experience, crazy how time changes things!
@@JohnCassityhow hard is it to get into Eastland mall and would you consider it decently safe because I heard people getting shot there
