you replace spark plug wires but not the cap and rotor ?😮
This channel has turned into my version of Saturday morning cartoons 😊 Pops up every Saturday and I can watch Alex with the family and not worry about any content that’s not family friendly. Very good stuff 😊
Said basically this same thing a couple videos ago....and am in total agreeance! Love me some Saturday morning LSC
Couldn’t agree more!
My wife just gets irritated hearing impact and grinder noise from my phone. She hears enough of it when I do it
@@mikegreen2229😂😂😂 mine hates 2 step when I watch drag drag racing
@@mikegreen2229 tried showing mine the fuel distributor system in the vid.... Got an eye roll, and a "don't you do enough of this at the shop all week" 😁 lol.
My reply was, "but babe it's a DeLorean!"
Alex is the type of guy who accidentally does a frame off restoration on one of the coolest cars ever. Amazing project awesome how resilient you were when you found out what needed to be done to the frame. Good luck with all you do!
I think Alex also sees 4 additional videos that will have millions of views for frame removal, restoration and reinstallation. On a car we absolutely love!
Ok Ok, if you were going to swap the engine what would you go with? It's coming out anyway at this point.
kia stinger or coyote
Lsa 6.2 L.S
Coyote would be cool
See? I knew there was going to be an LS9 option 😂
But you could go with a Tesla conversion 😮
Rb26 probably
It is so cool to have information from the original owner and the history of its journeys down dirt roads. Great stuff Alex! Thank you
Sorry to hear about the frame, listening to the original owner made me feel better. This is going to be a an expensive project, but as you stated , you are keeping it forever. Keep up the great work Alex. Greg from NC.
Dave has got to be one of the chillest and most interesting guys I’ve ever heard. I could sit by the fire w him all day and listen to his stories. Such a soothing voice and great storyteller
The glazing is wild 😛
He reminds me of listening to Click and Clack. What a great guy!
It was obvious from the first video that it wasn't a 16k mile car so no disappointment there. You're doing an excellent job! Can't wait to see it drive.
I was looking at the brake discs last week and yeah that had quite a bit of wear for 16k.
I was gonna say about 30,000 so wasn't that far off
That the problem buying an older car that was basically abandoned/parked/sitting/not running I mean there's tell tale signs but u truly never know the actual mileage, one tell tale sign on odometer tho is yellow film on odometer numbers only on the white part tho and even then if cable broke, kinda a double edged sword, but w/risk comes reward!!!
I have a perfect DeLorean frame for sale.
The body, Engine & transmission are gone.

G'day Alex, what an absolutely amazing moment mate. The phone call with Dave left me gobsmacked. The chance to speak with Dave, the original DeLorean owner, was bloody priceless! Good onya Alex. It's these personal stories and the specific details you're able to acquire from the original owner(s), that truly makes this build and many others you've done, EXTRA SPECIAL. It's one of the many reasons why your RUclips Channel, is truly, so incredibly popular. It's easy to see why, Legit Street Cars, has the BEST AUTO CONTENT ON RUclips!!! You my friend, create honest, unique, and exciting content ~ And you DON'T finish or Stop videotaping, until you've completed the job! Cheers Alex from Margaret River, Western Australia 🇦🇺 .
Hi Alex. I also own an "81 Delorean. I have had it for 23 years. I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. I am really impressed with your knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of these cars. They are definitely not the easiest cars to work on. Keep up the good work. I am looking foreword to your next video.
I think the space van would make a great back to the future plutonium transport van.. be awesome to see both of those on the lawn
From one Alex to another, I have been watching for your updates every Saturday. I am currently working on restoring my running/driving '83 Delorean as well and your videos have been very helpful. Keep it up!
As a mechanic in Minnesota I see far worse almost every day. We generally cut out the rot and weld in a patch paint it . Some frames can have a patch and be fine some are to far gone. This one looks like a few patches would be just fine.
Yeah that frame is fine. Minimal issues, patch it, epoxy it, coat the inside channels with fluid film and move on.
If you plan to keep it, frame off is best even without the rust issues. There would likely be other details you will discover in the process, that you will want to bring up to your standards. 😊
Yep, I called it in the first video. ;) Most DeLoreans have bad frames because of the epoxy coating.
New, stainless frames are available.
Alex, I'm so sorry for you. I've done several Jeep CJ 5 & 7's, which are notorious for frame and body rust. I've been in your shoes every time. The dejection is terrible. The you put your Carhartt's on, roll your sleeves up just start working. When it's all said and done, it's taken far more time than you imagined and you have 5x's more money than you'll ever be able to get out of it. It's just a work of love, and when it's finally complete it's almost a letdown. And you think to yourself, "I know what to look for now." And you end up with another one that's just as much work. Some people do crack, some do alcohol, some to cars. Although, cars can lead to alcohol... 😂😂
It's definitely a crap shoot that's for sure.
..
It's looking like a replacement frame which there are options available..
Even then Alex still wouldn't be upside down considering he paid at the lower end for the Delorean...
With a replacement frame the value of the car goes up.
I've suggested, see if OJ could make.
One off bespoke frame using the original as a template.
Knowing the top work they do at FMU it would be stronger than the original..
Only say this as Alex said this is a lifetime keeper..
For those hoses on pipes, also silicone boots, try a spray cleaner like 409. It is slippery for assembly and dries and makes the parts stick together so they don't want to blow off. Silicone spray stays slippery and is much more likely to blow off.
Very underrated comment
i agree
I would love to see something unconventional. Honda J series, 13b, or a k series. Something turbocharged would be pretty cool. A Rob Dahm crossover would be amazing. Or working with Haltech would be rad.
If I was thinking in terms of easiest swap, I would build a 3.0 PRV out of an Eagle Premier. That engine already has DIS, modern EFI, is a direct swap, and costs about 200 bucks in most junkyards. Control it with a Haltech ECU and add a turbo or two. If cost was no object? My first choice would be a TDI V10, but if it didn't fit, I would have to say a GM 1.2 or 1.3 3 cylinder, the LIH, or L3T. These are sub-200 lb engines, all forged internals, that stock make either 137 or 155HP on 87 octane. Take one of those, control it with a Link Force GDI ECU, upsize the turbo by quite a bit, and tune it for 93 octane. Sub 200lb engine that makes 250-300HP easily, possibly even more. The design of the block, pistons, and rods is so advanced compared to something like a 2.0 Ecotec, or Honda engine, that I am sure it can handle much more. I mean it has DLC coated wrist pins, seriously. Cast iron cylinders cast into an aluminum block with a full bed plate. And just all of the latest technology. And they can be had for $1500 or so. The engine isn't the expensive part, it's an ECU capable of controlling it.
You talked about My country with the previous owner, I'm so proud 😁. If you meet your Norwegian relatives say "god dag" that's what we say instead of hello here, and means Good day. have a good one Alex.
What would you guys do to fix the frame?
First
Cut out the metal rot, weld in new stuff
Then get the fibre glass replaced with carbon fibre ftw 👍
Yea that probably the best idea, cut it out and weld in new material
there's a company that makes a replacement stainless steel frame
Cut and change , or change all
Sorry to hear about the bad news on the frame Alex. Fluid film everything and get everything back together for Halloween. Enjoy driving it for a while then do the frame down the road in a different series!
What a nice guy Dave sounds! It's great to the up with the previous owners of your proects. Now we know why there was so much sand everywhere! Make sure you film your meeting with him at SEMA, and get him to Chicago in the summer to drive his/your DMC.
He was wasn't he.
What I found intriguing was the fact he owned a Delorean at the time of BTTF..
Something that's sometimes missed.
This Delorean would've been iconic even in the 80s when the film first aired..
..
Me and my mate went to see total recall at the cinema..
While we were waiting remember watching a trailer for a film about a weird car....
It was BTTF due to launch a few months later!.
@@stuartd9741 Yeah, Dave bought the car from the manufacturer before the movie was released, which surprised me too. Alex said this was one of the earlier models from about 1981 from memory.
BTTF came out in 1985 and Total Recall in 1990, maybe it was BTTF 3 that came out in 1990 you were thinking of?
@@utha2665 yeah am bit confused myself lol.
Tried figuring this out a while ago. But this trailer is the one I remember.
1985..
I did watch the original hylander movie but that was 1986.
I vaguely remember teenwolf that was 1985 might have been that movie
Long time ago. 35 + years.
@@stuartd9741 Yeah, it's scary just how quickly time flies. Yeah, wasn't aware Highlander and Teenwolf all came out around the same time. They were all some great movies. I reckon I have watched these moves hundreds of times.
Nice to hear from the previous owner. Although his perception of Norwegians' impression of Americans is a tad off.😂 (Typically in Norway you will have to pay for your hotel room no matter what County you are from). 😅
I’m from Norway too! Love to hear all the talk about us, cheers man. Love the videos!!
Frame off is the way to go Alex, excited to see the series on it.Something LS is right down your alley if it fits with some kind of manual trans. Can’t wait to see final result.
Being a mechanic myself I always enjoy watching others have a hard time putting something on or removing that should be way simpler then what it is 😂😂😂
And here I thought I was the only one who felt that way, hahahahaha...
Find it quite relaxing watching other people work lol..
Just chilling on the couch.
Yeah l agree with you , but I
would do it after Halloween
& B4 Christmas, & don't take
shortcuts please, if you can
replace the frame it is good
idea , we don't want the rust
to jump onto the main body
Do everything right & you
will have years free of Rust.
🙄😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😁😁
LS twin turbo engine. I saw a guy has a Corvette engine in his. Also, what about that stuff you used on the SVT Lightning frame? It turned the rust into nothing, instantly. At least it could be used to stop the rust process. Go Alex! Oh, BTW, Did you hear of the DeLorean barn find in Wisconsin? It ONLY had 977 miles on the odometer.
The fact that alex and max can just go on a road trips and pick up cars and within a month completely restore it is such a inspiration so keep up the grind, much love.
That's true but it makes you wonder if Alex will burn out or if the family suffers from him spending so much time away...
It's a balance for sure but family always comes first
@@LegitStreetCars it sure is.. either way, we're all here for the ride, thanks Alex!!!!
These are my concerns too.
Have raised this issue before.
In all honesty there's enough of a workload for an assistant to help spread the load perhaps off camera.
..
Max is a diamond but can only help so much..
Absolutely family comes first.
I'm loving this De Lorean series. After halloween you could put a turbo and a holley efi on it. Go for it!!
And get some Alpine heads for that boat anchor of an engine.
Or even go to the Eagle Premier 3.0 PRV V6. Direct swap and has EFI already. Get a Haltech standalone and a turbo (or 2), and some more modern injectors and coils, and you're pretty much all set. Those engines sell for 200 bucks or so complete, so it ends up a lot cheaper to do it that way. Even stock those engines make more power than the B280F, not to mention the increased reliability with proper EFI.
@@theodorgiosan2570 nice one! While keeping the original DeLorean vibes and get rid of the valley of death. You can make it faster with more hp, put new tech on it and then bring it back to the future. 😄😄
This restoration is the absolute the best. You are making this so fun - your humor and true restoration spirit is so entertaining. Thanks!
I have a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, it was my Dad’s car and it ran; however, rats ate all of the hoses, and the wiring hardnesses off of it. It has I think 32 valve V8 engine?
I even have spare headlights for it (got off one from Junkyard after I found out the bulbs were not made anymore).
I made the mistake of parking it over the winter of 2020 because the heat vent switch behind the dashboard stopped working. I bought that too (its sitting in the trunk).
You know you're going to fix it properly.
Enjoy it for Halloween. The car is definitely worth cutting out all the bad metal and doing it right.
So glad you're not just half assing repairs like so many RUclipsrs.
Small rant about rusty cars.
I don't understand the trend of guys slapping together a janky rusty ratrod or rust patina vehicles. Rust isnt a good style. Rust is the car equivalent of flesh eating disease.
No Thanks.
Cheers from Norway. Goes to show that the world isn’t that big. Love this project.
That stainless bolt you used threaded into the aluminum intake at 11:15 needs a special grease applied to the threads to prevent galvanic corrosion to the manifold! It would be better not to use it at all.
Very good and important catch!
My thoughts exactly - I cringed heavily when I saw that.
Great work on the Delorean Alex keep up the great work! Your a master of your craft!
Thanks Steve! Appreciate the support!
@@LegitStreetCars You're Welcome!
Man anyone else think that guy might've been overreacting to the rust? Northeastern person here ive daily driven much worse for many years and miles, i think id cut it out and weld it up. Are you going to put 100k miles on this? For how ofen its gonna be driven it would last 50 years from now....idk maybe its just me. Love the build though!
ADTR fans are SCREAMING right now at your use of that T-shirt as a rag!!! I am one of them.
*Greta voice* "How DARE you!?"
Looking good so far Alex! You gotta love it when an original owner from that long ago can remember so much about that car. It must be a DeLorean thing. It also was a very nice gesture from him to send you the Little DeLorean. You're going to do what I would do and keep it with the real one. That is so cool. By the way, I love the Back to the Future fonts I noticed you used on this video. Very nice touch.
Hi, greeting from a Norwegian fan. Very fun to hear your conversation with the old owner and his history about Norwegians interest in AMCars. I can confirm this interest, even though todays interest is mostly in electric cars. Probably the country in the world with most Teslas per captiva. But luckly also probably the country outside US with most vintage AMCars per captiva. Keep up with your good content and your positiveness☺️👍👍
Hey there, just reading your comment and just wanted to make a simple correction for you. The word is "per capita" not captiva. I am learning German at the moment and very early on in the process so I understand little things like this are easily missed. FYI, the interest in EVs has spread to me in Australia, I have just purchased my first Tesla and waiting for it to arrive.
Are the Norwegians obsessed with old Cadillacs like the Swedes?
@@utha2665 relax pal, it's probably just autocorrect.
The amount of work you have to put into the DeLorean might seem overwhelming right now, but you know it'll be worth it eventually. There's an older man close to where I live that has completely restored a DeTomaso Pantera. It took him almost 20 years, as he had to remove everything all the way down to the bare frame. While he's never going to have a project anywhere as intense as that one, he's proud of his work. He knew that he wouldn't be satisfied with mediocre work in the long run.
Have you watched Video Bob on RUclips. He rebuilds DeLoreans and turns them into the time machines from Back to the Future. He does good work. I don't care for his opinions but his work is good.
There's a youtube channel called Soup motoring, The guy did a Lotus Esprit chassis refurb which is very similar. Worth a watch
So cool that you were able to hook up with the original owner of the car and get the much needed back story on everything..
She's coming together little by little, and looking better and better each time I see her..
Hope you have a great day Alex..🙋🏻♂️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Love the convo with the original owner. Such a nice guy. I hope you meet up with him and get more stories from him.
Definitely need a Lincoln Mark 8 on the channel. I love the mn12 platform. I'm a tbird guy myself. I've owned 4 in my lifetime and drive a 97 v8 tbird now. The Lincoln was the top of the line for mn12, so lots of goodies to be had!
Oh man if he built an mk8 I'm sure it would be badass. I second the mk8, as an owner of a 96 they don't get enough recognition. Only other channel who has one is tony angelo. And being a 4v 4.6 and him having/had a cobra and gen 2 l it's a no brainer
Dave is a class act. Thanks for doing this!
Sorry about the frame. I would go with an all stainless frame from DeLorean Industries. Not cheap but they even have a custom frame for alternate engine options. Worth a look.
@11:13 "It's actually stainless unlike most of the hardware on this thing"
Oh no... That might be really bad. Putting a stainless bolt into an aluminum engine block in a location that likes to get wet means galvanic corrosion. That can't be OEM can it?
We don't want bad news we want good news!!

Hi from Norway! Proud owner of 3 Mustangs and a LTD, And a big fan of your channel.
I love all his videos and everything he does. He’s put so much into the Deloren but it bothers me that he didn’t pull the motor and transmission out to clean everything and replace everything that is old and ugly since he already did so much work to everything else
I noticed you used a stainless steel bolt on a coolant line in the engine valley. Stainless steel reacts with aluminum, they should never be used together. If these components are aluminum, either an aluminum bolt or cad plated steel would be the correct choice.
That previous owner is such an interesting man! Nice voice, nice cadence, well spoken. Nice convo!
Alex I know that the frame is a bummer and I fully understand ur issue but look how long it has lasted as of now couldn't u do the patch repairs and sime rust prevention and I am sure it will last for many many many years to come it's iconic as it is the work u have done so far speaks for itself man dont let it beat u up just do what has to be done no more no less u will still so many of fun years out of it

That’s probably the most complex cooling system I have ever seen! 😮
Does DeLorean down in Houston have new frames ??
I remember as a kid going down to the dealer to see brand new DeLoreans on the showroom floor when they came out...seemed so neat
I seem to keep saying this, and it keeps happening every video, but your best video to date is what I just watched! No other channel on YT stands out for us like yours, Alex! Freaking loved watching you grow over these years! I'm only 45, but you know what I mean.
It may have that rust, but if you don't drive it in the snow or even the rain, I'm pretty sure it's not going to get much worse than it already is.

Hi. Norwegian viewer here :) hehe. I can confirm that the stupid taxes on importing cars have ruined a car-fantasy or two for me over the years hahahaha. I love to follow along and watch how the delorean turns out. I know the frame is a disappointment, but if you do this properly you will be so happy :) First time I saw a DeLorean in real life it was one in pieces - literally in pieces - sitting on a trailer at the gas station in the small town I'm from. It made me happy to see it, even if it was in pieces. Love those cars. Love to tag along here and see what it really takes to fix one up.
I get that you are bummed out and tired of disappointments hehe - like the frame - but man - these twists makes the content so much more interesting and valuable for us that watch it. Don't get me wrong - I feel you hehe, but it's not only negative :).

Maybe a stupid question, but could you fill the ribs of the valley of death with molten aluminum? Like clean it up real good, warm the engine block up and melt some cast aluminum down to fill the voids with?
That is thinking outside the box!
@@davidcutlip Thanks. The only thing I could think that might not work, is that the fresh aluminum might not bond well enough to the engine cast? Idk
I think that mushy lump in the brake reservoir was a sponge/foam insert to trap bubbles (we use them in some of the older BMW motorcycles)
That's exactly what it was.
NERD ALERT: That model DeLorean isn't as old as Dave recalls. A model car company called Sunstar released it in 2001. I was 13 and I can't begin to describe how excited I was when I got one! In fact, I was even more excited about that 1/18 scale model DeLorean than I was in 2012 when I became able to "live the dream" and got my REAL one! 21:00 man Alex I sure hope you see this comment, or at least on ike it. Alex man I love you as in you're a brother, a mechanic an Italian American, an AMERICAN, a LOVER of cars.. brother, you are into this car for a real real good price. They go for a LOT more than what you paid. It needs a LOT of work, but man it's totally 1000% worth it to pull that body off, pull the motor and trans, PROPERLY repair or re-frame that thing and DO IT RIGHT. You can then make a decision about the engine and if you can replace it or do a full resto on it, but man.. you'll have a 100,000 dollar DeLorean after that. Come on, chin up brother, you GOT this! I'm sure later in the video you'll cheer up, and honestly Alex, this is right in your wheelhouse. You will now know EXACTLY what you have once it's finished, you'll get a bunch more videos out of this thing!! It'll be OK I promise!!!
Looks like replacement frames are available for between $10,000 and 14,000 . May be the way to go , by the time you blast that frame and add up the labor costs and hours to restore it!
OK! Great video! This writer LOVES his EV but still follows this cars progress . IDEA-how about, after its running and driving and AFTER All Hallows Eve--- trailer the DMC out to Nevada and the first owner. Let him see and drive his former car once again. This would make a fine video. DITTO an All Hallows Eve video of the DMC car on your front lawn, and ALL the comments on it!!

You know Alex, that's a good problem to have.Removing the Drive train is necessary at some point.Just have the bad sections removed from that frame completely, weld in new sections. I had a couple old Buicks ,the frames rotted in front of tge rear bumper. They just cut out ,welded in new sections, good as brand new! Then while your at it have it modified to replace that under powered mess. With a high horse LS Engine and transmission swap!Make that car move like it should!THINK CONTENT!!!
The frame is not that bad. I’d suggest putting the frame on the “B” list and get the vehicle running and driving well.
Very cool to have a great relationship with the seller. What a nice guy.
