It's really depressing. That's why I had to start learning languages on my own and just never quit. I'm now a student of 10 languages. Several others I can say super simple things in. I want to show that you don't need the school system to do it. And those i know that took foreign language in school for years didn't remember any of it. They miss a key factor: you have to be interested in the language to begin with. I'll study a language that I'm interested in even if it's kinda obscure. The law of attraction will bring those people to me. It never fails lol
@ my younger years have long passed and the computer in my mind won’t hold any more info. I forgot the Spanish I learned while living in Mexico one summer when I was 12 because once I returned to the States I stopped using it. It should be something well taught in school, not the current type curriculum available. That’s too boring for kids. Maybe with all the Spanish speakers kids now in the classrooms they can begin to share their language. The kids would learn from their peers.
The entire reason most North Americans barring Mexicans can't speak more than one language is precisely encapsulated in one word: entitlement. Because English is the international language of flight and commerce, those who are raised in an English-speaking environment have their feet several rungs already up the ladder of success in the business world. It's a distinct advantage for which we can thank Henry IV of England... One of my grandfathers could speak seven languages, but he refused to teach his children any of them because when he settled in Canada, he said that was his new language now, and he refused to speak or teach any of the others. I have never understood that attitude.
You're absolutely right and it's a shame because learning foreign languages is still beneficial regardless. And life enriching! It's just hard to convince some people of that.
You’re 100% correct on the poor job America is doing with foreign languages.
