    My Grandfather had a 1955 Oldsmobile 2 door Rocket 88 in blue and white with an all white interior! To me that was the most luxurious, wonderfully riding car I had ever seen! My Dad gave me a ride in once and it felt like I was floating on a cloud. The sad part when Grandfather died was he left it to a friend and we never saw it again.😢😢Wish we could have kept it in the family it felt like it would last forever.😂

    @ 3:01 I had a 1956 olds holiday rocket 88 4 door hardtop, 324 4 speed Hydromatic, if you put it in low you would get 1 and 2 if you put it in S it was like a lock up, it would start in second and stay in it, put it in D drive it would just run out all 4 gears. I believe it had something like a 3.03 gears out back... 100 MPH 2200 RPM'S on highway 101 north of Santa Barbara all day long, at one point i got 27MPG after I put a Edelbrock 600 CFM carburetor and a Modern HEI Distributor, i got it out of China for 80 bucks, best 80 bucks i ever spent, no more points no more coils overheating because they mounted/laid on the intake. Ran the Generator for a little bit and realized the HEI needed more power so I so I switched over to a one wire alternator... but before I did all that i drove that stock 56 with everything stock under the hood from Lompoc California to San Bernardino 210 miles fully loaded with household and kids stuff
    (moving day) on a half a tank of gas. Only other car i had that did that good if not better was my fully stock
    1960 Cadillac limo that i pulled out of a guys backyard in lompoc for 1,000 buck and drove it home 5 miles away... two weeks after buying that limo I Drove it to Las Vegas for VIVA LAS VEGAS over 600 miles one way 2 tanks of gas and we ran 90+ MPH'S all the way there ...
    to be 100% Honest with yall these are the only two vehicles i kick myself in the A$$ for selling I sold the limo for 12k at that Viva two years later he loaded it on a flatbed tow truck and took it to long beach to ship it to Sweden i told the guy i would drive it to long beach for free and cover the fuel so we were was closer to home he didn't believe me so we got to ride in the tow truck to LA then got a train back to lompoc, thats when i got my 56 olds the next weekend out of Winnemucca Nevada drove her almost home 8 hours out of a 17 hour drive. Had to get her a tow home lost the stock fuel pump in the middle of nowhere NV CA border.. if i can give anyone a little advice on driving a true classic car home /roadtrip, buy a little electric fuel pump from autozone in there Little performance area for 30 bucks and put it in your toolbox, you will thank yourself for having one in the middle of nowhere, it works for more than just a fuel pump, water pump, siphon pump, vacuum pump if you really need one... GOD BLESS anyone who spent the time to Read all that, and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

      Actually 'S' gave you 2nd and 3rd gears... S was Super for passing in the 50 - 90 MPH range...

    My dad was a body repairman back in the '50s. In 1956 he bought a totaled out '56 Olds 98, 2-dr, HT, in the exact color combination, chartreuse over charcoal, shown in your preview that was hit in the left quarter section by a railroad switching engine. He repaired it by replacing the entire left rear quarter of the car from a junk yard car. We had that car for about 8 years. It was the 324 V8, Rochester 4 bbl with the Jetaway automatic. It had power everything, except A/C. I've never seen another in that color combo. The power seat operation: open either front door and the seat moved backwards for ease of entry or exit. Open the door and tip the seat forward and the seat moved forward to make it easier to get in and out of the backseat. Tip the seat back and the seat ran backwards for front seat access. Close the doors and the seat returned to where the driver had set it last time. My brother and I thought it was pretty funny watching the seat move all over the place every time a door was opened!

    Had one in the '70s, 324 with three deuces for speed hydro blue and white two-tone two-door hardtop 88. What a great car! Would go like crazy in a straight line but you couldn't turn it and it wouldn't stop. Cost me $150.

    Hello Jay, and thanks for another fun and informative video! About 40 years ago I had a friend who owned a 56 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday, I drove it several times for a total of around 150 miles. It was equipped with the original 324 C.I. engine and Hydra-Matic transmission, and it was definitely a torque monster! Regarding the transmission, "L" is 1st and 2nd gears, "S" stands for Super and is 1st, 2nd, & 3rd gears, and "D" is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. "R" is of course reverse, BUT, if you shut the engine off and then move the shift selector to "R", a park pall would fall into place and lock-up the transmission, thus holding the car in a "parked" mode. The Hydra-Matic transmissions were excellent and a bit ahead of their time. I damn sure wish they were still available. Keep those videos coming at us!

    love these, always wanted a Rocket 88 , one thing to realize is that designers back then knew most men wore hats, so had to take that into consideration when designing roof line

    I learned to drive on my dad’s 56 Oldsmobile four-door hardtop. It was a great car. I remember that if you had a dead battery you could catch it in gear after you got a push to a certain speed. I enjoy your videos . thank you.

      that’s one of my favorite thing about stick shift cars is if the battery is dead or the starter I don’t know if the starter is bad I don’t know if you can kickstart it.. I know if the battery is flat one can kick start I’ve done it before I should make an episode on that honestly I want to know if you can kickstart it in reverse

    I had a holiday 98 sedan, this car was loaded except for the autronic eye. Had a/c, power windows/seats, and a second dimmer switch which controlled the tuning on the radio. Wish I still had that beast!

    In 1972 when I was 18 years old I got my first car, a 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88. I drove it for seven months before crashing it into a bridge a result of my driving inexperience. It wasn't totaled but I didn't have the cash to have it fixed. I wish I could get some of these past owned cars back today they were great.

      57 olds was a huge car if I remember right 58 they were even longer this car was the perfect size thing that gets me is the savoy (I shot the savoy same day along with three other cars that haven’t been featured yet) the savoy is smaller but has more interior space inside for figure

    Fine car. Fine review, as always. 1950s Oldsmobiles are largely forgotten these days and that's a pity. Pretty luxurious and fast for it's time, especially on the top end. Love the fit & finish of this restoration as well as that tri power carburation. Yes, the back set sliding button controls the rear dome lamps, for reading, I guess. And I agree, that dash is not overchromed.
    It's my wish that someday you get to review a Citroen ID-19 or DS-21. Introduced in 1955, it was giant step forward in automotive technology...aerodynamic styling, front wheel drive, disk brakes, self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension that gave a better ride than even Rolls Royce but still provided sportscar-like handling. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citro%C3%ABn_DS

      Yeah, at 10:00 my '57 Olds 98 had similar oval shaped speedometer and at WOT the needle flew past 120 and went on around to nearly the E on the gas gauge...
      1st gear went to 30 or so MPH, 2nd to 50 or so, 3rd/SUPER for super passing power and 80 or so, 4th about 140...
      1st gear had a lot of gear reduction for a fast takeoff because it had a 1:1 "fluid coupling" instead of a 2.2:1 "torque converter" that didn't arrive at Hydramatic until about 1965...

      I almost did a comparison video between the 56 Oldsmobile and the 56 Plymouth I shot both of those cars in the same day but they are two totally different cars the Oldsmobile is way bigger than the Plymouth

      @@What.its.like. But what makes the comparison of both of those interesting is the watcher gets to see "what it's like" to time travel here and see what was available to the prospective buyers of the time.
      However I also believe they're all special in their own right and deserve individual promotion as well. But comparisons are very interesting IMO.

    My dad had a 1955 holiday four-door hardtop. I was just a little kid when I remember that car such a beautiful car, red and white two-tone with the red interior. I remember sitting behind the wheel and pretending to drive it when I was about two years old.❤

    Love the GM cars of that era! They all have such a strong solid look. Interior looks great and comfortable, and wow that's a lot of knobs in there. The flip door ashtrays are really cool looking! Not crazy about the placement of the clock on the passenger side dash, just seems odd and out of place. love seeing the vintage ads and all the awesome color schemes !🤩😎

    Wow ! I was seven when my dad bought a 1955 Holliday super 88 . It was a four door in red and white . GM only made cosmetic changes to the ‘56 . My dad always bought Oldsmobiles , and this car was the best one by far . I would love to own a well kept one just for fun . One other point . I remember it being called ‘Holliday ‘ as the car had no center posts on the doors . It was a big deal ! I also remember the little switch in back shut off the reading lights in the back seat . By the way , you do a super job !

    The car featured in your 'heading' is a 98, not an 88.
    'S' on the transmission was 'SUPER' and locked 3rd gear.
    I believe the Autotronic Eye first appeared in 1953.
    The '3 2s', known as 'J2' carburation set up was a factory option also available on Cadillac and on 1957 Pontiacs it was called 'tri-power'.
    My step-dad had a 1957 Super 88 4-door Holiday with the J2 set up.
    The 'drip rail' above the driver's window was also on Chrysler cars -
    The rear-seat button was for the courtesy lights, on the driver's side for the driver to operate. Also on Chrysler products.

    I have a 1956 Super 88 with alcan white and cirrus blue paint and a jetaway transmission. Park selection is far left. I was told the jetaways might have been installed mid to later production. My VIN indicates assembly in Georgia. The spinner wheel covers(which are terrific) I think are for the 98s. Mine have the smoother type probably original equipment. The under-dash knob might be for an after-market electric fuel pump as I have. The in-line fuel pump is great for cold starts so the motor does not turn over much waiting for gas to come from the tank by way of the mechanical fuel pump. I turn on the fuel pump(hot wired) before starting. The redone interior is a good job. The rear driver's side interior switch like mine is a switch for the courtesy lights as you guessed for the back seat passengers. I do not have the autotronic eye or the up-graded radio. I hope to see you in a car show! Ride on!

    The 3x2 carb setup was a optional engine known as the J-2 .
    I know the 57' models also had this option as my Father had one in a a Super 88 Holiday coupe.
    I'm not sure of other year models that offered the J-2 engine.

    "S" on the Hydra-Matic quadrant does not stand for "second." The name of the selection is "Super." In S the transmission is in third gear, D gives you fourth. L gives 1-2. The J-2 option was offered only on 1957 & '58 models. It ran off a 2-bbl. carburetor in the center, with vacuum controlled carbs on either side which came into play only when the accelerator pedal was depressed to the 2/3rd point. So on this vehicle it's an aftermarket setup.

    Between 1969 and 82 I owned three 56 Olds, so I can speak with some authority and experience. The dual range hydamataic as show in your picture here was used from 52 thru 55 and some 56 Olds. The shift dial= NDSLR. Most 56 Olds had the Jetaway trans which shifted smoother, it had a dual coupling design . shift dial=PNDSLR, Both trans were 4 speed. Although I cannot confirm it, I do believe Olds had some earlier style trans left over from 55, they may have put them in early 56 Models and the less expensive models. Pontiacs in 56 did likewise, Cadillac did not do so. The Jetaway hydramatic was used thru the 50s, from 56 on, and on some GM cars into the early 60s. These were stylish cars and performed well.

    The "S" gear position is for "Super". In this position, there are 1-2-3 upshifts. "Dr" is 1-2-3-4 upshifts. Unlike your literature, this car does NOT have the Jetaway HydrMatic. The Jetaways had a Park shift position. This car has the "Dual Range" HydraMatic. Moving the gear selector to "R" and then shutting off the engine locks the transmission up and functions like Park. Both HydraMatics are as different as night and day.
    The Rochester QuadraJet 4-barrel carb didn't come out until 1965. Not all GM cars used it even then. The predecessor to the QuadraJet would have been the 4GC.

      @@What.its.like. I also noticed the lack of a Park position when the quadrant was shown, meaning it could not be a Jetaway. Many early 1956 Oldsmobiles still had the previous Dual Range Hydra-Matic until production of the Jetaway was ramped up. Ninety-Eights got the Jetaway first and then later on in the model year it was put on the 88's. The second fluid coupling on the Jetaway really did smooth out the shift, especially the problematic 2-3 shift which could be rough on previous Hydra-Matics.

    Those motors were torque monsters. Hot rodders in the late 50's and early 60's would look in the junkyard for those motors to put into their street rods. You could get decent fuel economy if you wasn't too heavy on the foot (the center carb did most of the work while the front and back carbs were vacuum operated). I think that may be a later set-up - not sure.

      The triple two barrel carburetors were not available in 1956 and Oldsmobile only offered them for 1957-58 as they had a reputation for being difficult to keep in tune. Oldsmobile never offered anything above a single four barrel carburetor afterwards. In the late 1960s GM issued a corporate edict that only the Chevrolet Corvette could offer multiple carburetors. Of course today we have electronically controlled fuel injection which enables smaller displacement engines to approach the horsepower of the big V8 engines of those days.

    I was at NC State from 1975-1980. There was a sad looking Olds 88, likely 56-57 vintage, that I believe belonged to one of the fraternities there, and apparently used daily by those members. I wonder if it's still there...

    Any Oldsmobile would certainly be off the beaten path these days. 😢 I once had a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88 sedan which I had bought used. Nice car until it wasn’t. The gas tank began to leak so I got rid of it.

      @@What.its.like. Even in the 70s Oldsmobile 88 was a great car . The 76 that I had was a 350 with a 4 bbl carburetor. It actually got better gas mileage than a comparable Chevy with a 2 bbl carburetor. I think the Pontiac Sunfire was a mechanical twin of the Chevy Cavalier of the day which was also junk.

    My grandad had a slightly newer 88 that was fully loaded with power windows, power seats, AC, and a speedometer that turned green to yellow to orange and then to red, the faster you went. The mpg was ghastly with the car getting 5 mpg with the AC on and 10 mpg with it off. As an electrical engineer, my grandad was fascinated with the power seats. So he removed an access panel on the right passenger seat to see how it worked. Unfortunately he made a contact and the seat went all the way forward till it went off it’s tracts. Anxious, he then removed the access panel on the driver’s seat to see how he could fix the passenger seat. But unfortunately that seat too went off its tracks. So, with the car undrivable, it had to be towed to a service station where the attendant, full of laughter 😂 repaired the car.
    Nevertheless, despite the embarrassment, granddad kept that car for a number of years; for it was cool with the AC (in Phoenix) and was a powerful, yet comfortable ride.

      You mean like your grandad had a '57? Most beautiful car out of Detroit that year. Love the story of grandad's experience with the power seats!! Sounds like something I would do.

      @@billolsen4360 it very well could have been a 57, but as a nine-year-old I was ignorant. The car didn’t have the outrageous tail fins that sprouted from later cars of the 50’s. The car had a special place for me as my grandparents took me to Nogales Mexico (times were much safer in 1962), to San Diego and Disneyland in 1966. Darn it! They traded it in for a more economical car, a 67 Ford Mustang.

      In proper tune with gentle driving they all should have returned around 15 MPG...

    Este auto es curioso. Obviamente es un Oldsmobile 1956. En ese año, la antigua transmisión automática Hydra Matic Dual Range, de 12 discos de fricción usada entre 1952 y 1955, fue reemplazada por la transmisión Jet Away. La transmisión Jet Away, también de 4 velocidades, tenía posición de Parking: PNDSLR. La anterior, H.Matic Dual Range, no tenía posición de Parking: NDrSLR, y había que usar para ello la Reversa. Este auto de 1956, tiene una caja de 1955. Este no es el único caso que yo he visto. En Chile, cuando yo tenía unos 18 años ví en el consecionario un Olds 1956 con caja Hydra Matic Dual Range. Mi padre tenía entonces un Olds 1955 Super 88.

      The rims have to be able to take a radial tire.. that’s why I’m having such a hard time with my truck I’m looking for rims I can take radial tire so I can get away from the split rims.. there is also a gray area and whether or not to run tubes inside radials A radial rim is different than a bias ply rim that takes an innertube.. There is a lot to it but the short answer is as long as the tire is on a radial rim then you have to make sure that the bolt pattern is the same

    In 1956 they didn't offer "tri power" you could get it with a 2 or 4 barrel carb. I think the "super 88" and 98 models came with the 4 barrel carb and slightly higher hp rating. in 1957 and 1958 you could get the J2 option on the "Golden Rocket" that had 3 2 barrel carbs. (note the 57 58 had a displacement of 371 cid) The secondary carbs were vacuum activated. I had a 56 Olds with a J2 (tri power) option but that was put on later in the early 60s.

      Yes, kind of funny. My mom's 56 Chevy 210 had a 2-speed automatic tranny with Park, but the fancier Olds with a 4-speed auto had no Park.

    Yeah the ashtrays on those old cars are pretty cool. But what's not cool is having to empty them when they're full without spilling cigarette butts and ashes everywhere.
    Don't ask me how I know this but I will add that both my parents were smokers when I was a kid and guess who got to clean the ashtrays?

    Seems to me that if you really wanted to know if that switch to the driver's side of the back seat turned on the dome light when the doors were closed, you'd have just gone ahead and reached out to close the door. You're the one doing the review, so why don't you just go ahead discover for yourself what stuff does rather than ask us to tell you?

      Because it also gets the audience involved shutting the door isn’t as easy as you think once in the rear seat. Switch may or may not work after 66 years that’s always a possibility as well =)

If you don't mess with the buttons, how am I supposed to know what they do? One might as well "review" a microphone without speaking into it, then. Nope, I want all the buttons pushed, levers thrown... everything.

      It’s not my car generally I did not have the keys to it so a lot of those buttons don’t work unless the car is on.. i’m sure that button would’ve worked if I pushed it if I shut the door but I’m a big guy I’m 6 foot two I didn’t really want to get stuck back there and not be able to get out I was stuck in a car once it’s not fun I reviewed a mustang Mach e I shut the doors and unbeknownst to myself there was no way to get out of the backseat because Child parental locks were on I had to climb out through the cabin to get out wasn’t fun That incident always plays in my head when I get in the backseat of cars I don’t wanna get trapped back there so I just leave the door open.. i’ve been doing this long enough that if I don’t know what a switch does I ask what it does because if I get it wrong I will never hear the end of it. This is a learning channel we are all here to learn/reminisce
      I reviewed a Jaguar XKE When doing all the button switches and knobs a lot of them weren’t labeled so I reached out to a jaguar group that specialize an Xke the responses that I got were all those are for the ejection seat that is for the smoke screen none of which were correct so instead of doing that that is another reason I ask if you know what it is in the comment section below

    What a mess from GM Buick, Pontiac , Oldsmobile, Chevrolet even Cadillac. They where similar in many aspects. Was it worth it to have all these brands under one umbrella

    The Jetaway transmissions were sloppy and always felt like they were slipping. The later Slim Jim Roto Hydramatics were even worse. The old pre 1956 Hydramatics were much better. Never a quadrajet carburetor until 1966.

      If you can get it for a good deal go for it because then you can put any engine you want in there you could put an LS 350 something more reliable if you wanted to go that route I’m not huge on engine swaps but it all depends on what it is like it’s a total sin to put a V-8 engine in a Duesenberg but it’s not a sin to put a V-8 engine in a 52 Chevy truck..
      it’s a sin to take a straight eight out of a Packard and put a 350 V8 in but it’s not a sin to put bigger engines in muscle cars all my opinion

      @@What.its.like. Jay, this car probably has the Rochester 4GC 4 jet. The Quadrajet didn't appear on GM cars until 1965.
      I love old cars too.

    I don't understand the love for the B pillarless cars which were more likely to suffer a total roof failure/collapse like a canvas tent in a rollover incident virtually guaranteeing the death of the occupants in such an accident. At least with the B pillar you had a chance of survival in a rollover although without seatbelts a rollover was still very dangerous when it need not have so been.
    The '55 or '56 88 that my mother's father used to have as I remember had the B pillar and 4 doors.
