At 3440x1440p resolution in some lighter games you will likely see the 4090 get bottlenecked. The 4080 will give you 60fps RT in pretty much every game at that resolution. The 4090 is only needed if you're the kind of person who has to play with Path Tracing on, and refuse to accept just Ultra RT.
A decent 4080 super costs 1200€ here in Germany. You won't get a proper 4090 if you do not pay at least 800€ more. But the 4090 does also consume way more power and kWh prices here in Europe are through the roof. Chances are that you will spend hundreds of € more on eletricity over just a couple of years running the 4090.
Your content is awesome! but I still can't decide on which one to get lol I definitely wont be able to get these cards below msrp here in Canada. If you're building a pc and will be keeping it for a decade, which gpu would you pick? lmao just need someone to tell me..
Just what I needed. Planning to get a 1440p ultrawide monitor and I needed to see if a 4070ti super could handle ultra cyberpunk + RT at that resolution.
I'm using a RTX 3060 12GB with a Ryzen 7 5700x and 16 GB ram. I'm planning to switch to a 4080 or 4080 Super for 4K gaming at 60+ fps in future games like GTA 6 and newer AAA titles. Which one should I choose, will I face any bottlenecks?
At 4K, your GPU performance to CPU performance should be fairly balanced. If you were running a lower resolution then I would definitely recommend upgrading maybe even in socket to just a 5800X3D. As far as which one to purchase, whichever is cheaper, there's only a 3% performance difference between them. There are no other features different, so if there's more than a 3% price difference, get whichever one's cheaper. For GTA 6 It's hard to say what kind of performance you'll need for that, but you'll likely be needing to use dlss upscaling even with a 4080.
Excellent analysis. I would argue that at 3440x1440 the 4080 holds a better value as even the mighty 4090 cannot hold 60fps consistently in demanding AAA games I play and requires DLSS. 4080 can do the same trick, less fps overall, but for me a consistent 60 for smooth gameplay is all that's required. I sold my 4090 for 2k (strix) and currently on a used founders 4080 i picked up for just 1k and couldnt be happier. Monitor is a samsung g8 OLED 3440x1440.
Path Tracing does demand that even the 4090 use upscaling to get 60 at 3440x1440, I don't really see that beign the main reason the 4080 is a better overall value at 3440x1440 its more the majority games that dont path trace where the 4080 isn't underutilized at that resolution, and at a push you can get the 4080 to path trace as well with out too much visual degradation from what the 4090 gets.
The 4090 is for you if you will be unsatisfied not getting a near native visual experience when path tracing. If you're fine with just using more general RT instead then the 4080 is the better value for sure. you will see less bottle necking from the CPU with your proposed setup than I saw but you will probably get bottle necking from your monitors refresh rate at that point.
@@zeldapkmn we don't quite know how long that wait is going to be but in all likely hood that would be the best value card that would max out your monitors capabilities.
This video makes sense if ur buying ur card for todays games but i think most people buy for todays and future releases and the 4090 is gonna be more future proof with more memory and performance on tap. Futhermore, if ur spending 1100 on a gpu another 400 probably isnt out of the question.
For 3440x1440 i think the 4080 is future proof. As for 3840x1600 &5120x1440 DLSS is kinda its future proofing it has pretty great raw performance today and DLSS will aloow you to have good performance tomorrow too. $400 is still $400 and especialy if it can go toward a different systme upgrade that may be more potent than jsut more GPU its worth taking that savings.
Thanks for your videos. I recently upgraded to 7800x3d + 4070ti with a 3440x1440 120hz monitor. I'm quite satisfied, but I see that new games like Starfield or Alan Wake 2, set to ultra with RT, can reach 40-50 fps. In my area, compared to the 4070Ti (760€ which I can still return) the 4080 costs me around €200 more and the 4090 around €540 more. What do you think? Thank you
Thank you for that comparison. I'm currently on a 3080ti and 5800x3D and using an Alienware AW3420DW with 3440x1440@120hz, and I'm curious if the switch to one of the 40 cards would be noticeable and worth it... On the other side, rumors say that Blackwell (Rtx 5000) will be extremely performant... What is your take to Blackwell? Or would you recommend to make a switch from a high 30 series card to a 40 series card?
I would personally sit on that 3080ti until the RTX 50 series and RX 8000 series comes out. The only reason to upgrade now is if you have a game that is your life and you can't run it to the levels that you require.
Very helpful. I'm alone a 1080ti, looking to build a new system now that I got the aw3423dwf (1440p ultrawide). Solidified my decision to get an Asus Tuf 4080 come Black Friday.
Right now im just trying to decide whether to get it Black Friday, or see what happens in January with the Supers. Or if 4080 regular would get a price reduction..
@@bowlinbob6 It's hard to say some rumors have the super coming in at the 4080 MSRP and the 4080 would drop to $1100. But others have it even cheaper which would mean a $1000 would be out of the question. But you also have to ask your self is having a way better gaming experience for 2-3 months or more worth the more than the savings from waiting?
Regardless of resolution, you should get a 4090 if you can find one at msrp. The fact that it has a 20-30% performance improvement on average across most games and has 50% more VRAM makes me feel like the 4080 just isn't worth it. After all, I would expect more than 16GB of VRAM for a $1,200 GPU in 2023.
@ultrawidetechchannel I've seen the 4080 go down a bit, but not that much. I've seen a few go to 1,100 or even 1,050, which does make it a better value, but I would still expect more VRAM at that price point. NVIDIA almost always screws their products out of having a good amount of VRAM for the price though. I guess it would also depend on where you live too. I definitely wouldn't get a 4090 for $2,000, and if it stays that way for a while, I'd probably tell someone who was shopping for a high end NVIDIA card to just wait for the 50 series cards or to see what the 4080 pricing looks like after the Super cards come out in a few months.
Hello, you mentioned that the only GPU capable of handling RT and Path tracing is the 4090. I have the 4080 and at 3440x1440, with RT psycho and Path tracing in CP2077, I get around 95fps, of course with FG and DLSS. Even the 4090 can't handle RT and Path tracing without DLSS and FG.
At the 2506x1440 and 3440x1440 resolutions the 4090 is the only gpu able to hit a 60fps average with Quality DLSS which is an internal render resolution of about 1080p. This I feel is a close enough to native presentation that you can say the GPU can handle it if you want to go faster you need more tricks, and Nvidia doesn't recommend using FG when your frame rate is under 60fps so the 4080 while it can get over 60 with frame gen your technically running it out of spec which there are consequences to as you can see in this video of mine. ruclips.net/video/2k7ZxTrwW6Y/видео.html
And keep in mind that if you plan to do any kind of creative work that requires processing power, like video editing or 3D rendering, the 6 extra gigs of RAM on the 4090 will make a HUGE difference.
I have OLED 1440p ultrawide but I use DSR with DLSS. The rtx 4090 rendering upscale to almost 5K then use DLSS to increase fps, giving me 30-35% perf compare to 4080. Even though, its 1440p monitor, DSR make the all apps or games looks so much sharper and better. 24GB VRAM should give me better resale value in the future as game continue to use more VRAM. In addition, I got a slim card with MSRP price so I am still sticking to rtx 4090.
@@ultrawidetechchannel Yes, DLAA give me worse image sharpness/detail while giving much lower fps performance compared to combination of DSR/DLSS. I wish we can use DLSS with DLAA but since that is not the case, DSR+DLSS is the king.
i use the rog strix 4080 OC Edition for 4k gaming. With dlss and FG there is absolutley 0 regrets for now. By the way, i bought it for 900$ last year august, which was an absolute steal back in the day
When I made the video the PNY and Zotac still had MSRP cards available but those have been long gone for several months now. The RTX 4080 super is going to do amazing for pretty much everything
ya the eye candy of a 5120x1440 monitor really spoiled me but i didnt know the performance of games didnt think it is about the same as 4k in pixel density. and 3440x1440 would have been such a better buy for peformance.
@ultrawidetechchannel right I'm just gonna build a desktop with a 4080 cause I've had a 3070 ti laptop and I mean it can but it struggles hard and with the 8gb vram is just not enough for what I require
It will do well for most games even when ray tracing, but you will still lack horsepower for things like Cyberpunk 2077 ultra ray tracing and path tracing right now is just for the 4090 at 1440p
Jus bought a G9 OLED. My 3070 Ti handled older games just fine but needed an upgrade. I wound up getting a 3080 Super at retail 999. At that price the 4090 didn’t seem justified for the difference. Especially with the 5000 series around the corner. I figure I can get a decent sale on the 4080S when it’s time to get a 5080. Especially if I am lucky enough to be able to grab one around launch.
I have a neo g9 5120x1440 with asus 4080 oc i benchmarked it on cod mw3 and it looks like my gpu is bottlenecked at around 140 fps. Does this mean i need a 4090 to not be bottlenecked on AAA games?
It really depends on the rest of your system. If you have the best of the best CPU and the best memory already, then you might be able to get even more out of a 4090. If your CPU is old, then that might be holding back your 4080 from reaching its full potential.
I have an 'All of the Best New, Announced and Rumored Ultrawide Monitors - July 2023 Update' video that lists a couple in it. but they are looking like late 2024 or 2025.
@@ultrawidetechchannel thanks. Late 2024 is fine for me, I am not buying new monitor before buying new PC with 5080/5090 (expected release date Q1 2025)
Some is bottelnecking happening at the lower resolutions and where its not bottlenecked by the CPU it is inefficencies in just going bigger, limiting it from being able to acheive a linear increase with the cores.
I like this video, the only thing really annoying is that you are always saying the figures/resolutions. It's hard to gauge exactly how much of what is on the slide I need to be saying in my voice over, i have made changes since I started and imagine I'll continue to refien the verbal data deliver over the coming years. (there are going to be many1600p users that will be quite upset with you for saying that, to the one place that covers their resolution)
ill wait for the 5xxxx series to so the 4080 super prices go down, spending 1200€ for a card that cant do a stable +60fps with native fps in ultra everythin in 4k is not worth that money

I have the 4080 and it performs beautifully at 3440x1440 except in some games like Remnant without DLSS, but those games are so poorly optimized. I am still not sure if I should go for the 4090 at 3440x1440, budget "doesn't" matter, but your benchmarks show less difference between 4080 and 4090 at 3440x1440 than other benchmark channels.
If they have a 7800x3d or a 13900k they may be able to extract a bit more performance out of the 4090 at that resolution than I can with my 5800x3d. The 4090 is only worth it at that resolution if you're looking to do intense ray tracing like cyberpunk levels at that resolution.
if using 2560 or lower no need and if like me u use 3440-1440p at 35' 180hz 4070ti oc is plenty tbh .. all the u need the top product stuff is slowly destroying the pc community..l alot of people cant afford top specs and some like me can but would rather pay for motorbike or holiday and keep 3090 or 4070ti.. good accurate review but 4k is next gen for me and once nvidia stops its greed or ill go amd
Thanks, ya both these cards are 'bad deals' but not every one is looking for a deal. The 4070ti and 7900xt are really the sweet spot for 3440x1440 performance
If your playing at 5120x1440, 4K or higher resolution the RTX 4090 makes a compelling argument for itself, though i would not classify the 4080 as a no go card.
@@ultrawidetechchannel I mean the 4080 isn’t that great compared to a 4070 Ti and they was charging you 400$ more. That’s the problem. Your content is awesome! but I still can't decide on which one to get lol I definitely wont be able to get these cards below msrp here in Canada. If you're building a pc and will be keeping it for a decade, which gpu would you pick? lmao just need someone to tell me..
If you're keeping it for a decade with no upgrades down the line I would get the 4090. If it's not going to be a financial hardship that is.
Just what I needed. Planning to get a 1440p ultrawide monitor and I needed to see if a 4070ti super could handle ultra cyberpunk + RT at that resolution.
You will need to used balanced DLSS if you want to get over 60 but you can get close with Quality.
@@ultrawidetechchannel I'll be fine on quality now that ray reconstruction is in the game.
man why am i watching this, i still have a 1080p 60 hrz monitor xD
Technolust baby!
How would this judgment be affected for 3440 x 1440 with a 7800X3D + 4090 vs 7800X3D + 4080?
@@ultrawidetechchannel In this case, would it be worth waiting for the 4080 Super for a better value?
Where can you get a new 4090 for $1500? Cheapest I can find is $1600, before tax.
Thank you
The only card that can really do path tracing is the RTX 4090, but if regular Ultra RT is your goal then the 4080 will have you covered.
Hey I just found and picked up a new 4080 for 800$. Does that compete with the 4090 price to performance wise?
YES! How did you even get one that cheap, was it used? All the ones here start from $1200.
It would destroy it price to performance wise. at 1200 they are pretty much a wash price to performance.
@@ultrawidetechchannel Thank you for your advice. Yeah that sounds reasonable, I think I will sit this generation out.
I have the same display and recently bought 4090. Its perfect. You cannot get frames like that in mp games in anything lower than 4080 and a good cpu.
Very helpful. I'm alone a 1080ti, looking to build a new system now that I got the aw3423dwf (1440p ultrawide). Solidified my decision to get an Asus Tuf 4080 come Black Friday.
A 4080 is going to allow you to rock that monitor's socks.
The 4080 can often be found on sale these days, increasing its price. Performance value, while the 4090 is trending in the opposite direction.
Very true, when your making money off a product its value proposition changes quite a lot compared to just gaming on it.
The 4090 does seem to be holding its value quite well. Have you compared what you're doing to DLAA?
@@ultrawidetechchannel Yes, DLAA give me worse image sharpness/detail while giving much lower fps performance compared to combination of DSR/DLSS. I wish we can use DLSS with DLAA but since that is not the case, DSR+DLSS is the king.
i use the rog strix 4080 OC Edition for 4k gaming. With dlss and FG there is absolutley 0 regrets for now. By the way, i bought it for 900$ last year august, which was an absolute steal back in the day
$1599? Every card I saw on Newegg was over $2000. My 4080 MSI Suprim runs just fine.
When I made the video the PNY and Zotac still had MSRP cards available but those have been long gone for several months now. The RTX 4080 super is going to do amazing for pretty much everything
I am very happy with my 4080 at 4k.
4k is about the same as 5120 by 1440 which the 4080 does very well at
@@ultrawidetechchannel4k is actually has more then a million more pixles then 5120x 1440
ya the eye candy of a 5120x1440 monitor really spoiled me but i didnt know the performance of games didnt think it is about the same as 4k in pixel density. and 3440x1440 would have been such a better buy for peformance.
the high refresh rate 3440x1440 monitors are the sweet spot right now if you want 120fps+ gaming.
@ultrawidetechchannel right I'm just gonna build a desktop with a 4080 cause I've had a 3070 ti laptop and I mean it can but it struggles hard and with the 8gb vram is just not enough for what I require
whats your opinion on the 4080 @4K gaming? not ultrawide
It will do well for most games even when ray tracing, but you will still lack horsepower for things like Cyberpunk 2077 ultra ray tracing and path tracing right now is just for the 4090 at 1440p
thank you.@@ultrawidetechchannel
a video looking towards my specific needs is great, but it also tells me I'm better off with a 4090 🙃If only I could find one that isn't overpriced
Their prices are going crazy nowadays. Good luck.
Especially if I am lucky enough to be able to grab one around launch.
the 4080S will treat you just right for that resolution.
When are we going to see 21:9 5120x2160 high refresh rate screens? I can’t find it anywhere and no news?
I have an 'All of the Best New, Announced and Rumored Ultrawide Monitors - July 2023 Update' video that lists a couple in it. but they are looking like late 2024 or 2025.
@@ultrawidetechchannel thanks. Late 2024 is fine for me, I am not buying new monitor before buying new PC with 5080/5090 (expected release date Q1 2025)
@@daniil3815 it's always smart to upgrade your GPU when you upgrade your resolution expecialy to one so high.
But the 4090 has 68% more CUDA as the 4080. Why is the difference so small?
Even the 7800X3D is a bottleneck on the x90,and even the 80 ,with the x80 its very rarely.
I would stick with Ultrawide and Super-ultrawide or do your own branding Ultrawide14/Super(no ultra here please)wide14/Superwide21.... easy to understand and you dont disrupt the flow. And imo x1600 is not relevant.. Otherwise your doing a great job. But what do i know... 💙
Thanks for this good video ... 👌🏻💐
Thank you too
ill wait for the 5xxxx series to so the 4080 super prices go down, spending 1200€ for a card that cant do a stable +60fps with native fps in ultra everythin in 4k is not worth that money
Waiting for better pricing is a solid strategy.
dudes hand movement got me giggling but thanks
They have a mind of their own!
@@ultrawidetechchannelyo do you know any good gaming laptops btw? i won’t be using any other monitors so i don’t know if i will see a difference between a 4080 and a 4090, but i want to buy the best laptop for around 4k for work and gaming! love your video’s btw
Can you do this exact same analysis on the 4080 super lol
30% performance for more than double the price in 2024.
The 4090 prices have really gotten out of control since mid 2023
Unfortunately, Shelling out the extra money for the 4090 is worth it if you are even considering buying a 4080
If you can't find the 4080 on sale and you can find the 4090 for MSRP then it's definaly worth the upgrade if you can come up with that extra $400.
Sweet. 4090 is the way to go then!
If the money is no problem then you might as well.
if using 2560 or lower no need and if like me u use 3440-1440p at 35' 180hz 4070ti oc is plenty tbh .. all the u need the top product stuff is slowly destroying the pc community..l alot of people cant afford top specs and some like me can but would rather pay for motorbike or holiday and keep 3090 or 4070ti.. good accurate review but 4k is next gen for me and once nvidia stops its greed or ill go amd
Thanks, ya both these cards are 'bad deals' but not every one is looking for a deal. The 4070ti and 7900xt are really the sweet spot for 3440x1440 performance
My Tv is 60hz and 4k lol, i got the 4080 cause das all i could afford with a i9 12900k.. im happy with it
The 4080 can do 4k well. It might struggle a bit with your cyberpunk raytracing but other games should all be fine.

smart choice
A 4080 is a slightly better 4070 Ti with 4gb of extra ram ..... That right there is a no go for me... DEF not a true 4k card like the 4090 is
If your playing at 5120x1440, 4K or higher resolution the RTX 4090 makes a compelling argument for itself, though i would not classify the 4080 as a no go card.
@@ultrawidetechchannel I mean the 4080 isn’t that great compared to a 4070 Ti and they was charging you 400$ more. That’s the problem. Back then around the 10 series each card actually had its own lane that the performance was nice. There’s a reason why people rip on the 4080. And for high 165+ hz 1440 4090 would still be my pick. 4080 and the 4070 Ti would give me buyer’s remorse
Cyberpunk...FSR?
Yes, FSR off, because the default Ultra preset uses FSR Auto on. When i test with raytracing I use DLSS where noted.
