I think you've mentioned aquariums in the past. My recommendation for rooting most cuttings that have no arial roots with ease is to let them callus over then hang them in the back of a planted and stocked aquarium, and they take right off (grain of salt, it works for me)😊

I was literally talking about this yesterday with a friend who owns a plant shop. In Brazil, only now is Raphidophora tetrasperma being mass-produced, so it's coming to garden centers. And one close to me posted the plant with the name "Philodendron minima"...And I hate that because the name came from the producer. The company that produces these plants obviously knows the correct name, WHY would you name it wrong? And then I went on Reddit to check because I literally thought "well maybe it changed taxonomy" even tho that made no sense, and I found a post of someone saying "Hey, I bought this Philodendron minima and its looks like my Raphidophora, anyone knows the difference?" and people were saying it was the same and the person bought it thinking it was something else... I know it's a well-known plant, but some people don't know the subject so well, especially when these plants start to become available to a bigger "audience" when it goes to garden centers... I wish people would stop making up names...

At the local plant shops here in the States, I've seen the R. Tetrasperma named Swiss Cheese Plant, Monstera Minima, Mini Monstera, Split-Leaf Monstera, and Split-Leaf Philodendron. I also saw somebody in my area selling them as a Philodendron Hybrid and charging $100 apiece. When I stumbled across their ad, they had about a half dozen clippings for sale, and had already sold two to some unsuspecting people, unfortunately. I told the seller that they had the plant labeled way wrong, and they basically told me to go away and leave them alone. So they knew what the plant actually was, but were more interested in trying to scam people who were new to the plant hobby. So sad and disturbing.

I completely agree with the naming part. Except for some particular plants :) and I mean Pink Princess here. It is a bit like with Thai, we used to get very dark burgundy PPP, now there is a lot of light colored, candy pink PPP which some sellers call marble and some just call PPP. I don't know if that's another hybrid or a mutation in TC but they present differently than the old cultivar. And I wish someone actually took care and register those cultivars under different names. I see the old, dark ones sold as "Dark Cherry" but that's also misleading because someone can think it's a completely new cultivar akin to Orange Princess (which I actually find ugly). So yeah... the whole royal philo hybrids family is such a mess, White Knights used to be green with white stripes, now they have burgundy stems, White Princesses used to be the ones with pink stems, White Wizars used to be all green but now they have white stripes. And don't start me on Red Anderson, that thing is sooo variable. Are they all just one plant with slight variations or truly different hybrids...? Who knows. I don't and that bugs me :)

    • @fwizzybee42
      @fwizzybee42 Год назад

I can say I bought a PPP over a year ago from a local bargain place, $30, TC teenager I’d say. It was very light pink at the time and the weeks before the plants the same place had were almost white. Now that it’s grown up the pink is full pink. It really seemed like it was a maturity thing. I can imagine ones from cuttings are always full pink but it seems like maybe the TCs take a little while to come into their own. Heck without seeing a seedling, it’s possible all PPPs do this.

The seller I bought it from actually has one that does the mint thing as well and has said the same thing. Maybe a combo of genetics and conditions ? I am glad you do this content, and say how it is, I think its very beneficial for people to realize this kind of thing can happen and be aware, esp with other plants too that are thrown out the same way. They do charge a lot more here for it too , but because | had this piece of advice previously, knew I was saving some cash not buying it and could try to see what I could potentially accomplish with mine. Okay, so this is only what I’ve read but my understanding is that Thai “Crème Brûlée” was a mutation of a regular batch of Thai, producing a more creamy white variegation than the standard yellow you see in Thai’s. True “Crème Brûlée” would have to be a propagation/clone of that one specific plant.

I'm a hoya lover, and the misuse of names and made up names and phony cultivars is out.of.control. So much of it comes from ignorance and lack of experience, but it's egregious when folks who know better - or should - perpetuate untruths for profit.

Actually, I always find people with uneven teeth so atractive. It just makes the smile much more honest and unique in a very good way. As long as the teeth are heathy and theres no problems like pain or something, just save the money! :)

In regards to the naming stuff. I think if you in the descriptions clarify like you do your mysterious dark boi. In regards to the Thai Crème Brûlée. I think it depends on a case by case. Can you consistently say (at time of sale) say this is different and have evidence of the differences (this can be from more mature specimen) but when it’s a variegate from TC and is just presenting different and is sold from TC giving it a special name is BS. Call it a sport of Thai or whatever it is.

Maybe silly comment but I was wondering why on the shop website there is only small selection of plants and in the videos we can see that there is a ton and ton of plants that never seem to end up in a shop? Just curious 😅

There's a shop here (US) who I see selling on all the usual online vendor sites/apps (they have a brick & mortar somewhere, but Idk where) and, I shit you not, this person gives each plant an ACTUAL NAME...
    Not a market term... Real.👏 Person.👏 Names.👏
Ish like a Monstera Albo named 'Monica' another one named 'Alissa' and maybe like a Frydek called 'Thomas' or whatever else like that... (I just made those up as an example, but it literally IS exactly like that)
Sometimes I see listings where she uses famous names, but each and every one has a name, and each is advertised as though it's a special, one-of-a-kind plant (and, of course, they're priced as such as well...)
Drives me effin' crazy -- takes the fake-names-for-the-sake-of-implied-exclusivity thing to a whole new level of mind blowing(/numbing)

Well, I'm like in the middle; if the name is changed a bit because the plant really looks different, I guess, it's fine. Quite helpfull actually, unless it's made up like the florida ghost mint crap 😅
It makes it easier for the customer to know what they want - I don't really like ppp but I love ppp marble type of variegation. Yeah, it's the same plant, sure, but to me it just is much better looking one and If I have to pay a bit more to get these precisely marbly genes - so be it.
Same about Thai Creme Brulee - i think u shouldnt be concerned about naming it differently than under the name you have bought it, cause as you said, it's just thai with more variegation BUT yeah, thats the point! It is differently variegated than classic plant of this type! Small, tiny tiny spots all around the leaf, dense, and making the leaf looking like... more vivid, sunny? I have classy Thai and I'm looking for creme brulee variegation type now. Cause... it's just so pretty, for me😊

So what are your thoughts on the white princess? And the "tri color" princess? Not every white princess I've seen has pink, so is that a scam too or the real deal?

I‘m obviously not Kaylee but White Princesses can have pink in addition to white variegation, I don‘t think that the pink is extremely stable

I will die believing in the existence of pink princess marble lol but I get what you mean... ecuagenera is spewing out new anthurium hybrids and honestly there's no distinguishing their A. Silver Streak as they call it and a A Crystal X Forgetii... they are doing this for a lot of stuff and I just keep asking myself... dear ecuagenera.... if I pollinate my own stuff and it looks just like your named stuff, then what's the point lol their hybrids are nowhere near as uniquely distinguishable and recognizeable as sth like any of the Doc Blocs or a Delta Force for example... it's honestly just more useless names for us to remember
