    Thanks Andrew for your extremely helpful video. Your instructions enabled me to give life to a PS4 that would otherwise have been chucked out and wasted. Anticipating that I'd probably screw it up, I bought 3 of these modules to have a go at fixing a bluetooth controller non-sync issue on by PS4 model CUH-12XX. After many days and countless hours spent at this I managed to destroy 2 of the chips in the process of trying to reflow them to the motherboard (I am a soldering noob) but I struck lucky on the third attempt. I just used a heat gun at 480 degrees as Andrew described, I don't own a PCB preheater. Tip - for anyone attempting this using a heat gun use good quality solder - I had major issues getting the solder to flow properly once the chip was in place, which I think was down to using cheap solder. Make sure the solder balls on each pad on the chip are evenly sized and that there is no excess solder on any of the pads - this also will cause issues if the amounts on the pads are uneven .Use plenty of flux, and make sure that the chip is firmly sat down onto the motherboard on all sides after applying heat - if you can see any space between the chip and the board, don't be tempted to chance it and power it up to check if it works - it won't. Believe me. Also, if you make a mistake and need to take the chip off again be VERY careful when removing it not to move the top metal plate. This is soldered on top of the chip and moving it while hot will dislodge the transistors inside the chip and create a hopeless mess, rendering it useless. Again, believe me, this happened. Have patience and faith and if it doesn't work after a few attempts, keep trying! Getting this to work was the most satisfying electronic fix I've ever experienced. The learning process was most valuable.

    another brilliant video. I think that in safe mode ps4 only uses usb connection to controller and not blue tooth because it is a minimal function mode. so the wireless is not essential for the ps4 to run in safe mode for debugging system software reinstall etc. - in reference to question at 9'00'' in the vid. but I am guessing tbh.

      That means I think there is a faulty controller chip and or bluetooth on the controller pcb(motherboard)or of course a fault on the controller motherboard. I got the same problem - but weirdly both ones that dont connect at all both connect to pc using ds4 programme and a usb lead - although neither connect via blue tooth - or go into bluetooth establish connection mode when you press share and PS button simultaneously. this is an old post but does your one go into connection mode when share and ps pressed together? this is as far as I can get in understanding what the problem is, but its obviously something on the motherboard that fails after time either the black ARM controller chip on the silver wireless bluetooth chip. I was also looking at acid mods for discussion and problem resolution but no luck.

    Is there a way of diagnosing whether it is the WiFi Bluetooth antenna, module or a result of flash corruption without just trying the different fixes? For example, if the controller works in safe mode, does this rule out the possibility of flash corruption?
    I am having the exact same issue as you - controller works in safe mode but not in OS mode and have tried every possible solution before resorting to hardware stuff. Initially WiFi was the problem, then a few days later controllers stopped connecting.
    Do you think it would be worth by first trying to replace the antenna? I would prefer to try replacing the antenna first because it's probably simplest and cheapest; replacing the module and dealing with flash corruption seems more complicated with a higher risk of messing it up.

      Both utilise separate antennae - WiFi is inbuilt into the motherboard, controllers are via the front fly-lead so if both are dropping out I'd recommend replacing the module. Just ensure that you're within good range of your wireless router. If you are, then that'll be the issue.

I believe it has something to do with the Bluetooth connection. My PS4 has the same symptoms like this one, and I even updated it. It did work after the update, but the PS4 then slowly started to break. Every time I opened a menu in the settings, it blocked the ability to open that one. I then reset the PS4, then the controller was no longer connected. Thanks for reading! Hopefully, you could help, because I just bought Elden Ring, and don’t want to return it.

    What are you using to put the chip back in place? is it some kind of glue? Also, do you need to solder all the induvidial "pins" or can you just replace is with a new one from Ebay straight away?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      No glue - paste is called flux which is used to aid the soldering process.
      You solder it back in place with a bottom heater and hot air from the top to reflow the solder beneath the new module. If the ones from eBay come pre-balled then you should be able to straight install them otherwise you'll need to do as per the video and ball them yourself before refitting the new module.

    Hello, what a well made video you've made here. My only problem is that i don't have such devices and wouldn't be able to handle such machinery myself. I own 3 controllers and have recently downloaded an app called ds4 windows which lets you use your ps4 controller on pc. A little time passed and this same issue occured to me, but the controllers charge fine but just won't pair at all. I also only used 2 controllers with this application, the third controller was never used with the pc and still doesnt pair with my ps4. I took it to the retailer after 2 months of trying stuff out (it was unplugged for a month) and he just connected his control and it worked fine, and when i went home even my controllers worked fine. now 20 days have passed and the ezact same issue re occured. Do you have any suggestion what the issue is and how it can be solved with non-tech measures (as in without touching the motherboard)? Heres a list of 'trying stuff out' : reset button, different usb cables, taking out power supply while ps4 is still on and on rest mode, using the controller without a battery but with a usb cable which still didnt work. Id really appreciate any suggestions, thank you.

    Okay, thanks for the video, I just had no problem with xbox one and 360 wifi card removal, but this is confusing. The wired controllers were installed and Ethernet, but rf was still being emitted from the units. I do not use a cellphone because wireless rf causes health problems over time. I bet the ps4 is the same case and needs to be separated from the wireless chip in order to stop emitting radio waves.

      One for a PS4 Pro? Found a few results on Google for the part number. They'll be fairly rare but there's an eBay listing in the states for $29.99 - I don't think the revision matters much these days - Sony simplified things in v4.x firmware thankfully.

    Hello Andrew. I have the same problem...I just wondered how could you recognize the problem, Bluetooth module or firmware?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      You should always check the firmware first as it's quicker, easier and much kinder on the hardware. Afterall, there's no point in replacing a module requiring some fairly major surgery if the module itself isn't faulty. Sadly there's no outwards way to check - you just have to follow the procedure to arrive at the eventual solution.

    Man I've just hit the top of my graphics card with a heat gun, insulating the rest of the circuit board. Sustained 220 degree C on the top of a card will melt the solder underneath with no removal required. It is a cheap fix tho, prone to breaking again.
    Still, perhaps try this before going through all the trouble of repairing ball solder.

    • @AndrewPaul

      To remove it you can use either a BGA Rework station, or as I do - a bottom pre-heating plate (I just use the bottom heater of the Jovy RE-8500 for this purpose) and hot air. You'll struggle to remove it without the bottom heat applied as it's heavily tied to ground which pulls a lot of heat away into the board. The ICs themselves can be had on eBay / AliExpress or removed from a donor board. I'm going to look to stock these parts on my webshop when I get it up and running in the near future.

    Hi! Great video! I have few questions: I CAN'T in no way desolder my old module. I've got the newer version of the mobo (cuh12xx) and slightly different chip. Reflowing it keeps console up and running either to first reset or connecting to a wifi (then it freezes almost instantly and bluetooth stops working aswell). It's a faulty wifi part of the module for sure. I've tried to reball it and then, if it doesn' work putting in a new one but I CAN'T desolder it no matter how high I crank up the temp (heated from both sides OFC) It just won't budge. Nothing. Nil. Ive tested my setup on another BGA and it popped off as it should. This one - not a chance. I would gladly take any suggestions as to how to take it off without destroying the mobo and optionally the module itself since I don't need wifi and bluetooth works just fine (and those modules are expensive here). I should add that the gap between the module and the mobo is virtually non existent.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад +1

      What setup are you using to remove the module, i.e. Hot air wand / BGA Machine / preheater make/model etc?
      These modules are located across a large ground region and will take a lot of 'oomph' to get it off. Anything other than some high-end equipment will most likely struggle. Curiosly though, has it had a liquid spill beneath the IC because it can make getting them off a living hell and are you using a quality flux paste to aid removal?

    • @gloot7259
      @gloot7259 7 лет назад

      Some cheapo "noname" air wand with air add. heating from underneath using diy preheater (with proper power modulator and thermal sensor) and flux paste (i've lost the lid of the current one so I can't give you a brand name) that is a generic brand aswell but worked beautifly for me to this point and I had zero problems with desoldering BGA's from PC motherboards with zero damage/overheating or any trouble whatsoever. I'm not a pro, I've collected mostly DIY stuff that only works precisely enough to the point of not destroying elements and not warping PCB's and it worked on everything to this point with zero problems (and temp limit is not the problem since I can purely theoretically crank it up to almost 600 degrees celsuis). Few months ago I reworked xbox APU in no time with zero problems and it holds strong. this damn thing though....this particular PS4 is a "hobby project" of mine that I insisted on reviving from absloutely murdered state instead of throwing it out. I've got it for free but it's a matter of honour now, not money :D I've fixed every single thing in it to the point it works flawlesly even under high load (tested on "one reset cycle" without wifi) except the damn wifi/bt module. I'm trying not to give up on it because of such a simple fix but I feel I have no other choice. Replacing the whole mobo is a official personal fail in this case IMO :) Even with proper air streaming the first thing that gave up was the upper shielding of the chip from heat transfer across the pcb and hot air spill and main solder points hold on like they wre glued in place with something fireproof. Not even a light wobble on the corners. The melting point is surely reached since every attempt causes an "accidental reflow" that allows to turn it on and use a controller for some time.

    Andrew, this looks exactly what is wrong with mine. I’m located in London like you, can you fix mine? I can drop it off to you...?

      Hi mate,
      To be honest since v4.0 I'm not sure. Pre-4.0 you couldn't - interchanging modules would cause BLOD. I believe 4.0 used identical C020001 containers - never tried a swap to be honest as not had any in to do so not sure if that would still be the case. I believe they all have the same footprint so should theoretically fit. I've not even looked at any 4.50+ dumps at all as yet but intend to as I need to update the tutorial vids. For now all I can suggest is to try it and see mate. :-)

      Good to know mate thank you. Another issue it looks like Sony got sick of ha ha! Could never understand why they locked the modules down to a specific type/revision initially on the 1200.
