Kids of my generation had a deprived upbringing, we didnt have social media, mobile phones, computer games etc etc etc. We had to make do with train spotting, how pathetic, nothing better to do!
Seriously when I see videos of steam days invariably there are excited kids somewhere in the shot, running about, taking numbers down. What a lovely life we had back then, innocent and easily pleased. Kids nowadays have a lot more than we did, but are they actually better off?

Watching Steam locos wasnt a deprived upbringing, not being allowed to go and see them was (or not having the money). A deprived upbringing is never having experienced this back in the day for real.

I am a kid of the modern generation and I’m still captivated by the years of BR Steam, specifically the transition period from steam to diesel. I’m jealous you could go and see them for read where as I’m stuck in the books or the heritage lines!

It's amazing how everything looks to be in black and white until the people turn up with their clean coloured clothing. I remember that grime everywhere. Those mucky black steam locomotives where a great signature of British Rail days.
