The murder of Robbie O’Connor behind the walls of Mountjoy Jail has been a shocking and rare killing of an inmate in the Irish Prison System.
Lured to a cell by his attackers and fatally injured in a matter of seconds, his brutal death is a reminder of the highly dangerous and volatile atmosphere that exists at all times in our jails.
Nicola Tallant talks to Irish Independent Crime Correspondent Ken Foy about the motives behind the murder and about the systems in place to make sure such killings are the rarest of occurrences.
We discuss the perfect crime scene that was left behind for investigators and why science and not motive will prevail in solving the killing.

Ireland needs the death penalty much cheaper than keeping these people in jail

Place is a kip. I know a guy 22 years clean from drugs. The prison doc halved his meds abd caused the only slip he had before or since . In a prison where heroin is openly smoked and he was only doing 7 days for a fime.

@cheiftain...maybe if the guy had not been a menace to society and stayed out of jail he would not have slipped but instead of blaming the person who is to blame you blame the prison doctor. people need to start accepting responsibility or come here and listen to this maybe if he had not have stuck shit up his nose or in his arm...the prison doctor away and f**k yourself.

Hello Nikola, my cousin died of a heroin overdose in the Joy in 2000, that was given to him by an inmate and the majority of my family have been in Mountjoy for drugs, battery, car pushing, theft etc etc. I was just wondering, if i were to email you, could you help me out a little bit in finding out about my family, as i had an uncle in Mountjoy between the years 2002-2009 who was put in there "after being set up" according to my mam, but she wont tell me the sentence reason. Any information regarding this would be of great help and I would extremely appreciate it.

The worst killing in mountjoy jail in my opinion was the lad in the holding cell now called the fishbowl when your sentenced if their is no cells empty or no one you know who can take you on to their floor your put into 2 of these holding cells in the base next door to each other and faceing the office were the screws sit , i think their was between 12 - 17 lads in the biggest of the 2 cells during the day that amount of lads could sit on a concrete bench up against the wall but come nightime your called to get a mattress thats when trouble starts this very unstable person who im only after hearing these reporters name just name the lad that was killed was Gary he was slaughtered by the prisoner over something stupid either a duvet or mattress he stood all over garys head for a good hour not one of the other lads would help he used his body as a pillow these should be brought to the cmh no the joy Gov Lonergan who i knew from the prison system he was the best Gov the joy had or will ever have he said it on some show the gardai could bring up 50 lunatics and we would have to except them and only know the basic information about these fifty new inmates nothing about their mental health.

A pool 🎱. Pretty blunt OK. Camera's all over the shop. No need to interview prisoners. Not as if the lags would rat anyway.
