What a a wonderful insightful lecture. As a jazz vocal coach myself, Johnny Hartman has always been one of my top favorites and also because I'm a bass-baritone a singer that felt perfect to imitate in my range. Always loved rich tone, used of delayed vibrato and color choices. One exercise I do with students in teaching jazz vocalists to learn not to always end on the tonic but how maneuvering to the 7th, 9th 13th etc of a chord in also enhancing the colors of the harmonies. That was something Johnny always did that I love but was also used in the cool jazz school with vocalists from Chet Baker to Julie London. I met Johnny Hartman about a few years before he passed when I was performing at the Biltmore in Santa Barbara. He was the sweetest man and very encouraging. Great experience. I'll make sure my jazz vocal students watch this! Def. do a video on Mel Tormé in my opinion he was the best jazz vocal technician and stylist. The Velvet Fog.

EARL COLEMAN is just 6 lps in 35 yrs = TOTALLY obscured by lesser singers, dem Bennetts, Tormes. ARTHUR PRYSOCK was as great bass baritone, made crappy pop disco records - besides just a few, 1 w Basie that s topnotch. The curses of forced commercialization = capitalism corrupts black Talent !! Nuff said
