I really hate the physics for Classic Sonic in this game. I love the premise, presentation and level choices, but I don’t enjoy this as much as most people seem to. Maybe if it had the physics of the Genesis ganes...
Has someone who never played the console version of Generations, I am looking forward to experiencing it for the first time this fall: that, and being able to play as Shadow is a nice bonus😎
For the remastered game, they should have added Knuckles for new 2D stages and Shadow for the 3D stages. Knuckles needs some love for his 30th anniversary!
8:38 'My game is lagging dude!' god damn this hit different, i guess we are around the same age and that one sentence took me down memory lane because the way you described it and not knowing what framerate even was back then is exactly how it was for me 🤣
Man I hate being that guy but Im gonna be that guy. The first game to use the boost was actually Sonic rush. And the game to continue the boost formula in 3d was colors and not generations. This has been my, 'um akxtually' moment.
I love sonic unleashed! That game was my shit when I was a kid in elementary school on the Wii lmao. I love the cheesy edgy sonic games. Not even a huge fan of the franchise but that shadow game was also fire, plus it’s fucking hilarious to go back to and listen to the dialogue.
It's probably my favorite 3d Sonic game of all time. Enjoyed it so much i 100% it twice. Unfortunately i didn't have a choice since my dog destroyed my game after i did it the first time.
The Answer: Yes! But there are flaws, like more Potential Levels and Bosses, Big, E-123 Omega, Omochao, and the Flickys weren’t at the Party, Planet Wisp doesn’t feel like Planet Wisp from the Wii anymore, Sonic CD got a Boss but not a Level, Most Sonic Games have only 1 Song, The Final Boss is underwhelming, and so is the 3DS Version.
Yes it is its one of the most replayable sonic games in existence, the level design is stellar, the music is amazing and its the one sonic game I have never changed my opinion of because its so clear that its just an amazing game
I miss when people held this game as the standard for Game Design, and overall quality for 3D Sonic. Consistently well designed levels and bosses and everything feels tied into Sonic's abilities. No werehog, genre shifting playstyles. The game knows what it wants to be and wears that proudly. Now it feels like everyone just latches onto nostalgia for Unleashed and SA2 which are such flawed games but the nostalgia for the art and story is so strong these days. Hopefully the remaster reminds people how actual quality this game is and one day we get a Boost game with this level of quality again with original stages.
I like Unleashed more than Generations but I am more than willing to admit to nostalgia bias. Generations is the only 3D Sonic game that is consistently good. Not 1/3 good like Adventure 2, not 1/2 good like Unleashed and Adventure 1but a fully fun game. I just wish Sonic Team could make an original longer game (like the recent Shadow Generations) with Generations level design and a good story with no filler and you have a great Sonic game. But looking at this trailer for Sonic X Shadow Generations the current team seems to struggle to make the quality of boost games we were getting in Unleashed and Generations. We'll have to wait and see.
@@AYTM1200 people have found the names for all the level designers on Generations in Nintendo games, so, most of them have moved on sadly. I'm hoping one day we get a game with gameplay as good as this but with an original story.
unleashed i can understand, but not SA2. SA2 doesn't have genre shifting play styles. If anything generations has a similar case of that, going from 3D boosting to straight up watered down version of genesis 2D Sonic. And the level design in the 3D sonic boost levels can be lame, sometimes having too much 2D or trying to go for open-esque level design(despite its controls sucking for that type of design). Unleashed handled the boost far better, cause it fully embraced its "gotta go and react fast" nature of the boost style. Besides, Generations just lacks on other aspects, such as music(yes, alotta the remixes aren't that good IMO), storyline, post campaign content, multiple playable characters, and characterisation.
@@Prime_Legend yeah it does. You go from Sonic's gameplay to weird on mech gameplay more akin to an arcade shooter with a focus on chaining together combos of your blasts treasure hunting levels about exploring sandbox gameplay. That's more sub genre shifting, but it's still a shift. The other characters aren't "Sonic, but can do this" their level design and game design goals of how you reach the end of their levels are different. You're not running through hallways and using a bouncy speedy character to learn a race track type level and find short cuts over and over again and get better. At least in Generations, I'm playing as two characters who have the same objective. Blast through 2-3 minute levels with good pacing, alternative paths I can learn, I'm not slowed down, and I'm rewarded for learning how to clear the stage in multiple ways. All of the extra missions follow a similar pattern of keeping the player active, give you new abilities that are speedy to replay stages for secrets, and the game also besides the final boss has better boss design that's not clunky arenas. You actually are on the move and engaged. And as for the story, yeah, it sucks, the story's bland, but man, for the whole 3 hours it's consistent Sonic fun and good level design. Unleashed has more slippery controls and level design focused on the cinematics and feel. That's fun a few times, but not very many alternatives routes, which gives it a Sonic game more longevity imo. And I disagree on the music. I think most of the music is phenomenal and are fresh new takes on a lot of the tracks featured.
@@Local_Nerd_The thing is, the treasure hunting levels have almost the EXACT SAME CONTROLS as the speed stages, but with an opened level design and new objective, hence why I don't understand why you accept the differences between classic and modern sonic to be not 'sub-shifting' at the very least. As for shooting levels you're contradicting yourself. You said in generations, at least the objectives are the same, yet the shooting levels has the same objective as the speed levels(race to goal, get higher score by taking certain paths, and defeating enemies in combos). In fact, the speed stages and shooting stages have a very similar ranking system. So if modern sonic and classic sonic having the same objective is fine, despite different styles, then what's wrong with shooting stages and speed stages having same objective, but different gameplay style(and even then, the shooting levels still more in common with the speed gameplay than generations' 2 gameplay styles.) As for 'not being slowed down' in generations is straight false. The problem with generations, especially modern sonic, is that it's either too much basic boost2win or slow down to platform. No in between like unleashed. MOST OF GREEN HILL can be completed by just HOLDING THE BOOST BUTTON, AND NOTHING ELSE, yet people will say 'peak level design.' What makes Sonic Generations so great is the fact that it wasn't garbage at all when it came out. Especially when it was at the time when the franchise's reputation dropped off a cliff with Sonic '06.
Can't say I entirely agree. It wasn't 'garbage', but it wasn't good either. Level design varies from decent to bad... with only a few levels being 'decent' and the rest being worse than that. Controls and physics aren't good either. To this day only Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes are the only good 3D Sonic games. Even Frontiers was very lackluster in a lot of ways. Kinda decent overal, but still not good and the regular levels are pretty much the worst levels of any 3D Sonic.
People overstate how common it was for a Sonic game to be bad at the time because of 06. If you siff through the games at the time of the late 2000s you'll find plenty of games that got their cult followings, with Unleashed being the defacto example.
