The point of those deep 1.5" gallery frames from Jerry's is to use spacers so you can set your work back from the glass. You can cut them out of wood or foamcore and use double stick tape to hold them in place. We've been doing it that way for a couple decades in the gallery world - Van is spilling a little of the secrets here but he's holding out on you. The spacers make those frames pro.
It looks like there are two frame lips in the jerry ones he is showing; would you suggest placing the photo in the back channel/frame lip while the glass is in the front?
Van's the friend who always captures great images when nobody expects it. He seems like one of those guys who is very selective with friends, for good reason
I see these twice: first on Patreon, then some months later again on RUclips. Something so seemingly simple in concept bears up so well under multiple viewings, with the evident care and craft taken to make each point and achieve each shot, and the unique elements to Van that make them a personal piece of art. Lovely photos, wonderful gifts, and a great video (as always). Thank you.
Van, These look nice, but I would argue that there are millions of ways to frame a photo- you just have to do it. You can do it Van's way or your way, but I agree that framed photos are a wonderful gift - cheers Van! Best, Steve aka The Talking Fly
Van is the only Patreon I ever subscribed to. I am currently in my 9th month of treatment aka 9 months sober. In two more months I can work again and I am immediately subscribing again with my first check.
Okay, I love this. I've been shooting film for decades now. For the last 10 or more, I get them scanned to CD, no prints. I do print the best ones of family for albums. But - giving them away.. I need to do that!! thanks for the video.
I think this is a great practice! I do this all the time, but with hand printed photographs properly mounted, matted, and framed. I do all my own developing and printing and at the end of the day, the most expensive part is not film and its not photo paper, its good quality mat board. Who would guess...
Last night I was talking to a friend about how I want to make prints of some of my photography and send them to friends and family as gifts, with handwritten notes to accompany them of course. Then this pops up, of course! Of course I need some nice frames and not just send them as postcards!
The unfortunate side effect of putting photos directly against glass is that it'll get stuck. And when the photo gets knocked off the baby grand during a particularly rawkus rendition of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.2 in F major and the glass shatters, you'll have a ripped photo or broken glass with the photo you're unable to remove.
I'm a professional farmer and have to say, those Gallery brand frames are the tits. They're deep enough for light duty canvases, canvas panels, shadow boxes, and thin enough for thin art work. I've bought a lot of them for myself and recommend them to my customers who don't need/want custom mouldings.
Hi Van! I love your videos, and i love analog photography. I make videos about it. Would love to take some photos with you one day. This video made me happy
I know gear doesn't really matter but the upgrade from your 50mm f1.8 to the 50mm f1.4 is worth every penny. Far superior lens imo from experience of owning both
Great video as always Van! Did anyone else notice that all the dates are from 2019? The receipt and the photo date? Did you make this video 5 years ago Van?
I took a class by a painter who got all of his materials for free from Jerry’s in exchange for promoting them to the class. You should check to see if they will send you free stuff. And then also do a giveaway with some of it and let me win the giveaway. Thanks Vanner!
Are these darkroom prints or just negative scans? If they are just being printed from digital files kinda looses the spirit. If they are color dark room pints it’s amazing.
The only reason my wife let's me keep my photography habit is I gave up the money pit known as cars years ago. Her ex also used to have a gambling habit and she claims the main difference is when I drop $1-2k, I come home with something of actual value that can be pawned if i overe tend my G-master/drone habbit!
I also own a dnp rx1 high capacity printer (4x6 & 6x8) so I can get my prints down to under .30 cents. It's also a bulk thing with a $300 per 1500 roll of thermal sublimation media.
Art has no expense. Neither has eternity, for which film photography has been made, from our multi-generational perspective. Just do the math $1 per Foto production, including a camera that makes 100 thousand of photos without extra cost. Keep 1/100 photos. Then divide by the days of use and memory until you throw it away. If you care about film photo that’s like 25 years with 365days on average. Add your $8 frame, that makes $108/frame not thrown away including the cost of the wasted and divide by 25x365, then you have a pay per view cost = 1.2 Cent per frame, per view, considering you have 100 frames in your house and 100 frames gifted to others to keep, it’s $2.4 per day in total. And you’re covered along the hole family and houses with obnoxious many fotos to look at full of the most important memories and people.
The ONLY thing I don't like about Van's videos is the sound his fingers make smoothing out "THE SPRITED MAN" label at the beginning. It makes my skin crawl.
I read and respond to nearly all direct messages received on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/spiritedman
I do not read youtube comments.
Interesting
Could we get a freebee by you telling us about your recommended archival photo albums?
"It hurts, but you´ll see the photo again when you visit the giftee´s home"
Great Video as always Van.

This is the most useful youtube video I have ever seen.
i started taking film photos a decade ago, and i can’t stop, addicted to the shindig.
Van is one of the most unique and creative youtubers. I love his storytelling, music choices and editing style. He is awesome

give it away to keep it - man that hit somewhere deep down and I really appreciated hearing it, think it's about time to go live it too. Thank you!

2:38 i understood that reference!
I love how you remind me that I’m not the only one who Loves the things I Love. Perfect😍
Yay!! a Van Neistat video!!
oh.. 3 minutes 25s?
I feel kinda feel like it's over before it started..
well, I'm sold! Definitely going to add this to my gifting repertoire :)
I really needed a short one today. Thanks for keeping my attention out of here in less than four minutes.
Thanks Van, I've been thinking about what gift to give to my friend. A photo of her with a special frame like this would make a great gift!
Okay, I love this.

thanks for the video.
I just moved and realized there is a Jerry's Artarama just up the street from me. I'd never heard of it before but now I'm so excited

I love this so much.
(And nice Tarkovsy reference)
One of your better vids Van!!! I Love print Pics and Albums.
The music in this is incredible
thank you for not gatekeeping where you get the frames
Really clever turnaround at the end, earned my like!
THanks for the frame link. I 've always loved this type of frame, and you're right, it's tuff to find.
Oh, and thanks for the RHCP reference.
So cool. Great video, as always. Keep it up, Van.
Give it away, give it away, give it away now!
And even for the images only for you … film is like a gift you give yourself in the near future.
Last night I was talking to a friend about how I want to make prints of some of my photography and send them to friends and family as gifts, with handwritten notes to accompany them of course. Then this pops up, of course! Of course I need some nice frames and not just send them as postcards!
Man your videos are so good
I got that red hot chili peppers refference 👀
Wasn’t exactly subtle
Yep, that song is stuck in my head now.
Glad I wasn't the only one half expecting "now" to follow.
@@christianmengel8354brain would’ve been very disappointed had he not said it
Photo with good frame makes a great gift. I see they sell bigger size, like 9x12, which would be great for larger prints.
thank you Van , i love film photography so much
the only videos I skip on my phone so I can watch them on the tv later.
Nice Van package, I often make them like this too! 😅 Great short film, you have all my respect!
I love this most about physical media
Am I the only one who is so broke that 8$ per frame is a lot? and being on the verge to make or own frames from scrap wood found on the streets

I love Van’s videos!
Thank you for reminding me to get my film processed.
This is why I love instant photography, would be jice to find some decent frame for it. Give it away, give it away, give it away, now.
@2:37 so THIS is what the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were talking about. Thanks! 👍
I appreciate Van’s functional brain
tan abandonado pero aun existente , la oportunidad de preservar en un marco recuerdos que no podran borrarse aunque se caiga un servidor.
Hi Van! I love your videos, and i love analog photography. I make videos about it. Would love to take some photos with you one day.
This video made me happy
Where are the albums from?? These look like the same ones Casey showed off in Peter McKinnon’s recent video. Need these albums.
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
That's great. Every part of that. Great. Thanks.
what type or brand are the albums he uses and takes off the shelf at 0:14?
Beautiful
a lil' feel good for yr friday afternoon. cheers
Great video I really need to get into film photography
Original. Thats the best part about Van.
What a great video! thank you for making it.
I know gear doesn't really matter but the upgrade from your 50mm f1.8 to the 50mm f1.4 is worth every penny. Far superior lens imo from experience of owning both

Love it❤
I liked the red hot chili peppers ref
I like that and thank you for sharing it.
Hi. Was that a Canon A-1 at the start? Awesome!
Proceed to check out, print more photos. Who, location, when.
The sacrifice
loved it
BEAUTIFUL !!!
love it!
that is AA knowledge right there,
Is it glass or plexiglass? Great video Van!
Andrei Tarkowski, sacrifice. the shoot this scene twice. camera problems. graeat to see here 😀
You could also get multiple prints of the same photo. If you want to keep one and give one away.
Cool!✌️
worth watching just for the frame info alone
I took a class by a painter who got all of his materials for free from Jerry’s in exchange for promoting them to the class. You should check to see if they will send you free stuff. And then also do a giveaway with some of it and let me win the giveaway. Thanks Vanner!
Gold 🤙
nailed it
Do you color grade?
Tarkovsky 🧡🙏
great idea
I may have missed it but what photo album does he have?
would you say it is better to give the photo away, than make a copy of it? because as we know it hurts to give it up.
"It hurts, but you´ll see the photo again, when you visit the giftee´s home" Provided they don't stow/toss them away.
Van, I bet you as a movie creator, must have also tried to develop a film and make prints in a darkroom. If so how did you like it?
Give it away to keep it
Are these darkroom prints or just negative scans? If they are just being printed from digital files kinda looses the spirit. If they are color dark room pints it’s amazing.
Agreed.

love the Red Hot Chili Peppers reference !
After I watched this video, I felt like I just got done with a little meditation practice or something.
Hello 👋
why are you here michael
10/10
Interesting that we both decided doing the same thing at the same time without talking to each other
STOP with the “LOOK AT ME” comments.
Begging for attention is sad and desperate.
Stop it!
I lost my 0.7mm posca at a party but now I know what to do with the next one.
Is this the same type that he uses to write on all his stuff, Casey too? I don't think it is, I think I remember seeing a blue body to the other pen.
You bought a frame instead of making one? This spirited man would never do such a thing..

Those frames, expensive, but not costly.
👍👌
