I never heard of a Doug Nash 4+3 so I had to google it .. still don't know what actual rations and number of gears it has.. My Father had a 61 Chevy Belair with a 3 on the Tree plus Borg Warner overdrive..
That carrier needs a angular contact ball bearing, good to know why these fail, I'm willing to reproduce these parts as billet pieces if you need them and have good samples
They went with an angular contact bearing and they failed just the same. You just need to set the proper stack height of the whole assembly. The people who were assembling them didn't understand the fundamentals of clearances. Therefore most failed because the bearing was being crushed
Already looked into that. Not enough room and not enough material to remove to fit a bearing. FYI. I've done quite a bit of these and developed the fixes for Callaway and the Corvette challenge series. They work fine if they are set up correctly. This is no longer something I will build simply because the expense to tool up new parts ( I've already made Iron carriers, billet pistons, washers etc) is no longer profitable since these cars have little value. Most people getting into these cheap Vettes freak out when it comes to major repairs.
@@GearBoxVideo you make the best videos! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I have been afraid to try and rebuild transmissions. But with the great detail you give I’m going to give it a shot. Thanks
A pretty nifty system no less, but I’m still left wondering why wouldn’t GM have used the T5 that was in the Camaro instead. It’s a far simpler transmission, and yes I get that the torque rating for the T5 NWC wasn’t high at the time, but GM could’ve stuck with it and tweaked it like Ford did.
I guarantee you those who have request about your tools are young people who are becoming interested in automotive. Most of these young folks had no father to teach them so thankfully they have RUclips. These are just my thoughts. Young folks don't worry so much about the tools as about the wisdom you gather to perform the task. There are people out there who have a toolbox full of tools which cost more than their house, most are still renting. Tools without the ability to get the job completed is a waste. I have the same Matco toolbox I've had for over thirty years. It has a mixed variety of tools, proto, SK Wayne, Snap on, Craftsman, Mac, ect. I buy tools in pawn shops, flea markets. People who have to brag about their tools, cars, ect. Have a great character flaw, insecure in their real abilities. I grew in in my grandfather's junk yard, my father was an alcoholic, I work for myself, but notice I watch these RUclips videos. This man is a specialist in his field, gearboxes. I could feel the sarcasm in his toolbox review, just for you, especially when he gets to his lunch. I really do hope you are learning this trade to be a specialist and not just to feel special.
@@GearBoxVideo that is pretty lame and misleading. traditionally a 4 + 3 is a 4 speed with a 3 speed auxiliary. A 5 speed with a 4 speed brownie box would be a 5 and 4, but you get a lot more than 9 gears... but i guess manufactures have been lying all along, can expect them to change (or ever be honest in their advertising)
My reverse let go now I have no engine brake only if engaged in overdrive engine brake works reverse grabs a tiny bit makes noise it fully engage hard and slip . Without overdrive no engine brake
someone want to explain why they want to see what is in another persons toolbox? Other than being nosy i don't get it. oh and when the clutches hold the drum they are called "brakes" :)
I think it was me just trying to add to your defining a clutch pack. In a clutch pack when the friction plates have their teeth on the inside it's a "clutch" along with the steels. When the teeth are on the outside (so as to catch on the body of a transmission) they are called a brake, because their job is to "brake" the clutch pack when needed while a "clutch" set usually allows the clutch pack to rotate with the shaft. :) sorry if i sounded like i was being an ass. I build auto tranny's (well and race engines) and sometimes my mouth goes off before my brain kicks in and makes things more complicated than they need to be :)
Its the overdrive section of a 4+3 Transmission. Its a 4 speed gearbox that has an OD behind it. Are you familier with it? The video explains the operation and FYI the planetary is a stepped planetary unlike the slushboxes you refer to.
worst product ever put in a 'vette. Had one. First day took an off ramp "at speed".... heel/toe shifted, thing downshifted causing my rear end to try passing me on the outside!
People think by disconnecting the switch and or relay that the OD vanishes. It doesn't. The person doesn't want to eliminate OD, just have full manual control with the computer safety features still available.
Man, I wish I was smart enough not to keep my tools and materials anal-retentively organized. I probably spend three hours a week organizing, but it'd be six if things were chaotic, haha!
The 4 plus 3 set up correctly worked just fine. Although a little odd it definitely was not as smooth shifting as the ZF. However you really cannot get service parts for the ZF anymore.
Merry Christmas Paul, I’ll be calling you next week for some questions about the direct clutch stack height, I’m at .980 and it’s too tall and won’t allow the sun gear to contact the output shaft and selective washer. I’m .224 to tall, We’re to start with the height would help Thank you
I’ve mimicked both stacks heights like you recommended using 5 in the OD and 6 in the direct, When I install the direct plates in the unit there’s not enough room to stack them on the hub, Yes I’m missing a step somewhere in the assembly. I simply may not have the apply plate pulled back in the case enough but it’s 1/8 past the lip easily.

Gerotor pumps are standard on most automatic transmission assemblies
Thank You for this info. Looks like I'll be staying away from these even though people sell them cheap. But this is good info.
@@GearBoxVideo probably better to fit a tappered roller in there. If you need parts made hit me up. I've got CNC capabilities
@@GearBoxVideo if you still have the prints, I like making low volume parts as a side hustle, more of a hobby.
Your tool box looks like my tool box.
Nice! Thanks
No problem!
TheGtracer1994 The Ford units broke often. The T5 would have been a disaster
So if this is just an overdrive, direct box. Why is it called a 4+3. Seams like it is only a 4+2?
In front is a 4 speed. You get 4 speeds plus 3 additional ratios in 2nd , 3rd and 4th. Get it?
@@GearBoxVideo that is pretty lame and misleading. traditionally a 4 + 3 is a 4 speed with a 3 speed auxiliary. A 5 speed with a 4 speed brownie box would be a 5 and 4, but you get a lot more than 9 gears... but i guess manufactures have been lying all along, can expect them to change (or ever be honest in their advertising)
You would have to understand the marketing behind the Doing Nash product line to get it.
Can you convert it to a regular T10 4 speed if so please explain it quickley in the next video or any time you feel it good to explain.. thanks
No, the T-10 is a completely different design and approach in manual transmission architecture.
What’s in your toolbox?
Fucking everything.
Nice!
Literally a small automatic transmission. It's a great dealing. Failures are really due to neglect.
My reverse let go now I have no engine brake only if engaged in overdrive engine brake works reverse grabs a tiny bit makes noise it fully engage hard and slip . Without overdrive no engine brake
Your OD unit is smoked
@@GearBoxVideo even though overdrive works ? Thanks
I thought the four-speed would work normal and I would have no overdrive and reverse? But thanks
The OD unit doesn't disappear when not in use. So reverse mode has to drive thru clutches which when burned you will also loose engine breaking
how to change oil/filter on 4+3 manual ? every 10k service
You take the pan off and change the filter
someone want to explain why they want to see what is in another persons toolbox? Other than being nosy i don't get it.
oh and when the clutches hold the drum they are called "brakes" :)
In what context do I need the "brakes" correction?
Damn that pizza look good🤤🤤
he ate the pizza ha ha love it
I only see clutch plates , pumps and Planetaries .. I guess it a slush box not a gear transmission.
Its the overdrive section of a 4+3 Transmission. Its a 4 speed gearbox that has an OD behind it. Are you familier with it? The video explains the operation and FYI the planetary is a stepped planetary unlike the slushboxes you refer to.
16:33 Where the next part for the electricl
Like 84-85 Sensers and 86-87 Sensers
Oh fuck i just bought an 84 vette with this transmission think i will flip it tune up with some red paint buy low sell high
Gotta love pizza...😝
worst product ever put in a 'vette. Had one. First day took an off ramp "at speed".... heel/toe shifted, thing downshifted causing my rear end to try passing me on the outside!
Hypertech and Arizona Speed had chip eliminating the automatic part making in fully manual. I sold a lot of chips in the day.
Oh man! If only I had known! Of course, in retrospect, I should have known...
@@burnerjack01 could have just pulled the relay next to the brake booster to disable it. Regular 4 speed again.
That 4+3 was the worst transmission ever made the 1989 ZF 6 speed was 1000% better.
I’m .224 to tall, We’re to start with the height would help Thank you
You just as assembling wrong.
