Many joined the army for financial gain rather than national pride. The country lacked security, and drug production surged by over 500% since the Taliban's previous rule. More than 4 million Afghans fell victim to drug addiction, while warlords and drug lords seized private property. The US bore a heavy cost, losing thousands of soldiers and spending over $4 trillion in taxpayer funds. Frustration mounted as many Afghan government officials were implicated in war crimes, drug trafficking, or supported terrorism.
