Best American song writer since Stephen Foster. Cruel lyrics over achingly beautiful music. Saw him play in Vienna and had a chance to spend time with him. Humble, Funny guy. An American hero who's music will endure.

Randy Newman is criminally under-rated! This song, Political Science, Burn On, Shame, and his concept album Faust are must listens. FYI, he wrote Mamma Told Me Not To Come (Three Dog Night), You Can Leave Your Hat On (Joe Cocker in 9 1/2 Weeks), and Lonely At The Top (multiple covers).

No song could be more relevant to the present times with cities burning in Ukraine, and children killed in Ukraine and in the USA. This is one of my favorite songs, not only by this great lyricist but in the whole popular music. Makes me litterally cry everytime I hear it. This cynical attitude of God he describes is one of the strongest parable ever written.

@@didierchapelot5671 You don't think children are being killed by bombs and guns in Syria, Yemen and Iraq (of the 1.3 million dead because of Bush's war in that country)? I'm not trying to compare tragedies, what's going on in Ukraine is awful, but it just makes me sick when people act as if everything to do with war and conflict has become so much more meaningful when Russian invaded and the war started, because, as a consequence it dehumanises and trivialises all the other suffering that has been happening across the world outside of the West. And this is only compounded by the reporters and broadcasters who openly say that Ukraine is different because these people and children are blond-haired and blue eyed or educated or civilised. Human rights and equality amongst all people is a lie, nobody actually believes in it

Man puts everything out of proportion...we hear people say how does god allow children to die...but time that we think is long is a blink and suffering comes and goes like good times.........Angels are indifferent to our wants and needs....How could they watch the horrors we produce without being indifferent...Like when they open portal to Tartarus and creatures spew from the depth of dimension at Cern...they know they will be indifferent...they could not care whether we live or die...but the creator loves his creation...He is being quite flippant accusing god of valuing us no more then a blade of grass....He does play piano...and is a good song writer but he was not in a good space when he wrote this.

Yes, there are hardships in life, but that doesn't mean God is absent. The real question to ask isn't Where is God in this world full of pain & tragedy, the question is Where is Man?
