Polishing Some Awesome Metal Art

- Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
In this video I polish up some new brandy red metal art that I've made. It's a three panel piece where the patterning flows from one panel to the next.
I very quickly go through the full polishing process in this video, from sanding flat through to the final buffing. I'm using 3M compound and polish on a catalyzed polyurethane clear coat.

Oooh, lenticular! That color is great too, has that same "oddly satisfying" thing about it that a true candy apple red does; I could just stare at it for hours!
Lenticular? I'm glad you like the colour. I've always preferred the darker brandy colour myself, but only marginally since the apple red is a beautiful classic.
Brad Angove A lenticular image is one of those pictures that changes when you tilt it side-to-side.
CAR is one of my favorites, especially on guitars (it was also Leo Fender's favorite guitar color too!) I like it over a gold base though, seems a little richer to me. I actually considered trying a true CAR with Spraymax, but I know it's a tough finish even for experienced painters and I've never sprayed a candy before. I'd rather get some practice with lacquers or something first, before I tried it with more expensive paint.
Mixing a tint into lacquer is a reasonable way to practice. The overlap etc. is a bit different with candies. I certainly wouldn't have the confidence to try a normal CAR finish on a large surface. The texture and layering here means that I don't have to be perfect like one would need to be on a large uniform surface.
Cool!
That's beautiful, it looks like photo-realistic red silk sheets. That would look awesome on a bike.
+Dominique Hebert Thanks. I'm glad you like it.
Sick video man!! What kind of paint is that? I like the transparency of it!! Very nice work! 👌🏽
Really cool finish. Have not thought of this type of finish!
+Alabama Metal Art Thank you.
Absolutely gorgeous. Excellent work!
Thanks; I appreciate it.
very cool looking panels Brad great Job.
Thank you sir.
Stunning
Thank you!
wow that looks great, keep it up buddy
Thank you.
Amazing work man! Kinda my favorite color too ;-)
+Daniel Fogli Glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Hi Brad, the color and finish are stunning! What type of paint did you use? I've been experimenting with painting on metal and just not getting the right look.
Is there a tutorial on how what you did to achieve that red effect?
wow, love this! Thanks for sharing :) I had a question though, what kind of machine/tool do you use to bring this kind of effect? Also, if I were to paint on the aluminum, do I have to prime or seal on it before painting?
I believe I used a grinder for this one.
You will need to prepare the surface; yes. Paint does not like to stick to aluminum.
@@BradAngove I do powdercoating and know someone that does this and then powdercoats over it. Could you use a dremel and a wire wheel to accomplish this in small entricate parts like a brake caliper?
Wire brushes are more for cleaning. I haven’t done this kind of work with them.
Beautiful job, hey how did You do that paint job? Like a regular candy paint job , or is it different ?
Similar, but with some added detail work underneath and some additional steps to make it work straight on metal.
Nice work!! Just wanted to know how do you get the fine lines that define some of the areas?
I use a couple different grinder and die grinder wheels for that.
Is this neutral andonized or is this a layer of paint that you've sanded over.
Before I ruin the work I've done can you answer that quitaron?
I see you didn't respond to any of the comments asking this type of question...
Those look awesome! I have wanted to try making some of these for awhile but i am not sure how you get the paint to stick on the bare metal...?
It can be a bit challenging. Most paint isn't compatible with bare metal (aside from etching primers). Make sure the metal is is very clean, and use adhesion promoter. That's usually a good start.
going through a lot of your videos. Great production.
One question I have is what type of metal are you using? Steel, aluminum? Details would be appreciated. I'm in Clearwater FL and finally have room to try a lot of different art media. Thanks
I use aluminum for the vast majority of my metal art.
WOW!! Nice 3D effect. was that a skull I seen in there?
I didn't put one in there on purpose, but weird identifiable shapes have appeared in a few of these before.
Looks awesome, how much would a piece like this go for?
It depends a bit on the size, colour, and a few other things. This one for example has a significantly different cost than the last two metal art pieces I put on my channel. I'd prefer not to discuss the numbers on here, but if you email me at brad.angove@gmail.com I'm happy to chat about it.
What kind of paint and clear coat do you use?
Hi Brad, Thanks for all your helpful videos. My question is, what do you think about the DA Porter Cable 7424xp for my sanding and polishing 2-part clear coats on my metal art. Seems to be a very popular machine from the reviews on Amazon. It's electric so dry sanding only obviously! I would get a pneumatic DA but my compressor is 20 gl so don't think that would cut it for continuous use. Thanks!
That should work fine for sanding. I’ve never tried polishing with a DA, so I can’t say for sure how it would do at that, but I would think it would work fine for that as well.
Thanks Brad!
You’re welcome.
Are you using 3m polish
Likely.
How you paint the steel?
Do you have the video of painting this?
I do not.
Hey Brad. What is your favorite type of metal to do this with? Aluminum?
Yes, I like Aluminum because it tends to come out the brightest.
How would you mount it up on a wall?
I think I would probably put mounting holes in it like I did with my other recent pieces.
Computer case finish found. I'd best start prepping.
Best of luck!
Cheers. Just need to finish it for August.
wow man nice job! how did you get that holographic effect?
Thanks. It's a combination of the patterning work done on the metal, and the type of coating that is used.
. hi.good job
Hi. Thank you.
