Farewell to the Catskill Mountain Railroad 5/30/16

- Update: The Catskill Mountain Railroad was saved......at least partially. An agreement was reached shortly after this video was uploaded to give the railroad a new 5-year operating period to run trains from Kingston. Sadly, the section from Mount Tremper to Phoenicia was abandoned following a brief revival to run fall foliage trains for the fall of 2016. A rail-bike operation was supposed to start up on that part of the line to take the place of the trains, but nothing has come of this so far.
Memorial Day was here, and with it came the Catskill Mountain Railroad's final day of operation. I was able to go up to Kingston, NY to see the railroad's final trains. Starting off at the Westbrook station, I got a look at the Kingston City Limited as it awaited its next departure. ALCO RS-1 401 and GE 45 Tonner 42 were in charge of the train. I didn't stay to see them depart, however, as I wanted to focus on seeing the train that would run on the section from Mount Tremper to Phoenicia. Sadly, this decision meant that I would never be able to see 401 actually pulling its train in person.
Once I got to the Mount Tremper station, I had to wait for quite a while for the train to back into the station. Then, because I was unfamiliar with how this train ran, I missed out on seeing it departing with the very last train from Mount Tremper due to it reversing down the line for several miles, catching me completely off guard. It took a long time, but I stuck around to see the train coming back west and crossing Route 28. S-1 407 was in charge of this train. I then caught the train two more times along Route 28 before seeing it one final time as it pulled into the Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia.
At this point, I made my way back to Kingston in hopes of seeing the 4:30 train from the Westbrook station, which was supposed to be the very last train from Kingston. However, that didn't happen. As I came up to Washington Avenue, I saw that the train had been broken up and was being separated into two halves. 401 was paired up with the three coaches, shoving them back to the Westbrook station before being shut down for good. 42 was put with the two open-air cars and Caboose 675, shoving its train back to the station to make one final run before the railroad was forced to shut down. Sadly, I was only able to see this train once, as it passed the entrance to the Kingston Plaza. A heavy thunderstorm rolled in around the time, and combined with the train making a very long stop after crossing Washington Avenue prevented me from trying to get any more shots of the train.
Goodbye, Catskill Mountain Railroad. I truly hope that it can be saved by some miracle, slim as the chances are.
It always makes me cry whenever you have to say farewell to something or someone youve known for a long time :(
Awful decision. These historic railroads are treasures to be valued and preserved. Short-sighted politicians as usual!
That's why politicians and hemorrhoids have one major thing in common, being nothing more than a total pain in the a$$!
Hamilton, TX, Aleman, TX, Ireland, TX, Levita, TX, Alexander, TX, Carlton, TX, Stephenville,TX, Gorman, TX, Dublin,TX all had prominent railroads supplying peanuts, to passengers.. By the 1929, to 1941... Months before World War 2, the Central Texas Railway, Cotton Belt, Stephenville, Texas North and South, St Louis Southwestern, fell by the wayside. The 'last' railroad shut down, January 1941... Between Gatesville, TX to Hamilton, the rail line from Gatesville, TX to Waco, TX via McGregor, TX was shut down, and used for storage track.. From 1909 to 1929 then to 1941.. Railroad in Central Texas declined as roads were improved.. All that remains are the Depots that once served the now dead ghost towns... from the road side, one can see the 'old' railroad dump (Texans call it) or road bed.. Just chiming in that a little place called Sipe Springs (SEEP), TX had a railroad line to Cross Plains when it was dismantled in the 1940's.. Scaled back a few miles.. The Dublin, Gorman (peanut line) exists as a Class 2 or Class 3? Service line.. The E.O.L. is a depot...
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
+AcelaRailfan2150 If only.. the people were richer, powerful, wealthy enough to restore the track, and "BUY" back Catskill. Too bad, there aren't any Railroad loving, billion, trillionaires that want to save these old railroad lines.. Locomotives, and rolling stock, all sold for scrap iron.... melted down... track rails removed, to melted down, cross ties used for flower beds... rail spikes melted down.. :'"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""( Rest-Rust In Peace-Pieces. :'(
Youre very right
I took a sunset ride on that line in 2013 and had a great time. The ride was short due to heavy rain in either 2012 or 2013 washing out some of the track. I hope the issues with the lease or what ever problem they have gets worked out. It would be a shame to lose such a nice attraction.
A commercial railroad in Indiana known as the Monon eventually went broke. The Monon ran to Chicago, and maybe other places I do not know about. The track remained, and was used by The Indiana State fair train. Then, politicians and greenies decided to make it a trail. The tracks are gone, but it is slightly dangerous to walk or cycle on that path. Various crimes by thugs have caused problems. An old man riding a $15 bike was hit by a 2 x 4 from behind a tree, and ended up in the hospital. He had no money. It takes many police on that trail to keep it safe from thugs, but it is too big a job. So much for converting railroads into recreational walking paths.
The old original part of the Monon that started out as The New Albany & Salem RR in 1847 is still down here where I live. CSX own it now although they haven't used it since 2011. Last time I talked to one of them in 2014 they claimed the line was still open.
it moved to the nickle plate line to the east. the indiana transportation museum ran a train from noblesville to the fairgrounds starting in 92. but the city of fishers wants to turn the line into walking path. ended contract with museum and kicked them out of the park they called home since 56. the port authority really screwed them.
check it out maplewooddouche: we have 200 miles of trails here, and its not any more policing than any other service.
@@Rebel9668 I wondered about that it still looks good the old K&I bridge has not been used forever noticed there was some equipment parked on the new Albany side last month maybe speeder time ?? would be a nice ride to Salem .
@@jhonsiders6077 Unfortunately CSX has since abandoned this section altogether now as they have worked with the Louisville & Indiana and upgraded all their jointed rail to welded and are increasing their use of that track. They've pulled up all the sidings between Salem and New Albany and there's a large washout at Fogg siding east of Salem. :(
great news! I actually went to the empire state railway today and it's still running! the museum is open and they are doing scenic rides. I guess it reopened. they are also restoring a steam locomotive. I don't know if they just opened the line through Phoenicia or they reopened it including the one in Kingston.
A lot of people don't realize that railroads are required to pay property tax on their right of way. This is on top of the cost of maintaining their right of way, rails, cars, personnel, insurance, etc. It's VERY expensive. If there isn't enough income from freight / commuter / scenic rides to cover all of these costs, they have to close.
Many of these right of way are purchased by Land Trusts, so they can be preserved in some way, most often as a walking / bike path.
They tried that on the PRR branch that is on our farm in Ohio. They wanted to put in a bike/ATV trail over the objections of the land owners. It took a court case to stop the freeloaders. But there was a clause in many of the ROW deeds that said that the ROW could only be used for a rail line. Otherwise it was to be returned to the current land owners It only took 16 years in court to force that.
joeynickdotnet the CMRR makes millions of dollars for the economy, it’s just that the county doesn’t want them there.
Serious bummer :(
Whenever I hear of trains and the Catskills, I think of one of my favorite books by Henry Billings as a kid: Diesel-Electric 4030.
oh boy look at all the grass covered by the tracks
Its a real bummer they couldn't make it successful like the great Smokey Mountain Railroad out of Bryson City North Caralina. All that hard work down the drain
its a darn shame there not at there old tracks anymore. DARN THOSE PEOPLE IN THAT TOWN! now those tracks are getting torn up! but good news is there still running at 2 different railroads now.
Feel free to enroll in a 3rd grade writing class....
Crazy to close this - if tourists knew, they'd rush there!
....for the first year...then they get tired of the same run....happened on the North Creek run from Saratoga
Guess the Catskill Mountain Railroad needs to be bought by a Class 1 Railroad in the future then.
Never got a chance to ride the Catskill mountain railroad. 5/30/17 marks the first year after the last train ever running up the catskills.
Newsflash, they never closed. The state extended the contract. Bad PR to say your closing when its not certain. I even did not stop by this year assuming it was a goner
You're clearly not very familiar with this railroad or the county's spitefulness towards it. They WERE closed after their original contract expired, and they did not immediately get their new lease. The railroad didn't even get to start operating again until a couple months later.
Shame that the tracks between Highmount and Boiceville will never see trains again.
Catskill Mountain Railroad is not all gone in Kingston,ny there still run trains ok :)
To the best of my knowledge they recently started up the rail-bike project from Phoenicia to Mount Tremper.
It's sad to see trains and train tracks to be abandoned like this I wish they would keep it open forever
I just heard about the extension! Maybe, just maybe, this can becaome a tourist operation. Everything, rust excepted actually seems to be in fairly good shape.
Inaccurate video. Should change the caption. The railway did not close down, but was saved at the 11th hour.
Only for another 5 months. Rail explorers took over last year.
Kinopanorama Widescreen Preservation Association Incorporated read the description
DON'T CROSS!!!
LOL, dude had one job and wasn't gonna let anyone slip by on his watch ...
It’s not safe.
will they ever open it up again?
Why do they not think for the future. The fall of Catskills should ripple. Those who go to the city of Kingston should rebel. Don't buy from the store don't eat at the diners. Show the city that it will fall in months due to economic depression.
Matt`s Mocs trucks deliver better.
Trucks are less efficent
Trucks didn't build this country....Trains did.Just about every town in America at one time or another has had a railroad through it or some connection to it.
So why don't YOU with your insight and knowledge go make a business case for that railroad then raise funding? A railroad is a business. Make it profitable.
Why close down such a nice scenery train route this does not make sence they done the same here in ireland closing essential railways like the waterford /rosslare route and then spending millions opening new ones
In essence, they stopped being essential...railroads cost LOTS of money to operate...
We shouldn't wish their city bad luck.. They're doing it for a reason. A bad reason in my opinion. We can only hope that all the equipment can find a good home.
RaritanRiverRailroadFan4 I can think of a good home for them...But the shortsighted greedy politicians would need a Tetanus shot!
Governments shouldn't own railroads or bike paths at all. Privatize that shit!
So what’s the deal? Did they get saved? I actually live far away, but today I saw the train cross RT 209. It was dark, but I think the GE switcher was leading and the alco was pushing.
The section in Kingston was saved, but the Mount Tremper-Phoenicia section was abandoned. A rail bike service was supposed to start up on that section, but so far nothing has come of it.
Emocionante ver que estan recuperando tan baliosa via de desarroyo como es el ferrocarril ,,los felicito de colombia muchas bendiciones
Sorry, spoke too soon; it looks like it already has been operating as a tourist road......
It must be still running according to their website.
Sad. I love trains. Wish I could buy a ticket to ride one day.
why did they have to shut it down is it abandoned now
It is such a shame that these American iconic traditions are becoming so scarce in our culture. It is obvious that people still love things like this, but it is just too costly yo upkeep and maintain these treasures. Many old roads like this one are kept alive by the volunteers who operate the line operations, but the system and mechanical aspects are difficult to fund.
where is the locomotives and rolling stock going to
So whatever happened to all of their equipment ? I hope that other museums were able to acquire it before it was scrapped...
As far as I'm aware, it's all stuck at the Empire State Railway Museum up in Phoenicia with no way to get any of it to the Kingston section of the railroad.
i wonder why it closed down
why is this railroad closed, they are still making videos.
The sad end to an amazing railroad
No doubt. It's tragic, really.
Hey bro, cool video, it's supposed to be nice tomorrow and Wednesday, so I was hoping if you can railfan on the Bergen line on one of those days, like rail fan at the stations. If you don't want to, I understand. You make awesome videos. This is a suggestion.
Worry not.. Today they announced it will be reopening!
It's a shame that the part from Mount Tremper to Phoenicia will only be allowed to run in fall. Starting in 2017, it will be used for rail bikes instead of actual trains.
That may be the section that their problem person lives nearby to.
Why did they close down? Will there we another railroad serving the line?
If you're a railfan, you should KNOW...FINANCES
Isn't it still open? There are ads on the website for the 2017 polar express train.
Yes, the railroad is still open today, at least part of it. At the time, it appeared that the railroad as a whole would be closed down. It was revived a few months later, although the section from Mount Tremper to Phoenicia was permanently shut down at the end of October 2016.
Sorry to see it go.
They saved it!
What's the story behind the stored RS1? I didn't know CMR had another one.
It needs a new block for the prime mover.
is catskill mountain railroad 407 now delware and ulster 5106
No. It is still cmrr 407
What about the freight train line up here? Is it still open?
If you're referring to the CSX River Line in Kingston, then yes it is still open and used regularly.
What is this right of way like today?
Sad, Thanks
didnt they get another permit to run
Yes, but only for Kingston. they ripped up all track at the Ashokan Reservoir besides a small switch, Phonecia has it’s equipment but can’t run it unfortunately.
That's a shame. Why is it shutting down?
The county wants to rip up the track and put a walking trail in its place
Fucking hippies and commies all they got is create more government dependency and put in trails that people don't end up using because of all the tourist venues, businesses, and transportation networks they destroy.
One word...FINANCES
Nobody said why it even shutdown to begin with?
there lease ran out but fear not the county said that they will renew the lease now so there preparing to start back up
+L.j g that's so good to hear! I can't imagine it's easy to keep an operation like this running steady
One word...FINANCES
So basically the line is going to abandon?
great video
We love old trains. Would ride if it still were in business, but they take a lot of work.
Why is there a schedule for 2017 in their website?
Because the railroad still exists. The section from Mount Tremper to Pheonicia is no longer allowed to run, but trains are still running from Kingston.
I once rode on a similar looking open train upstate about 2-3 years ago in the Catskill Mtns. I forget the name at the moment but they are very similar. A little further past Kingston. Thanks for the info.
where did they end the train, where is it
What came of this
They are supposed to open this track up to pedal cars in spring of 2018! I can't wait.
and FAT bikes
Pedal cars?
chaosdemon: They are open air cars that seat 4 persons that fit on the track and are powered by the pedal action of the operators.
The story of this railroad is pretty sad. The County is kind of cruel with the whole lease on the tracks.
Its not too bad now. They are kind of working with us a little.
is it back in operation until 2020??????????
Yes. Just got approved for 2021. Kingston only.
So Kingston is going out of business in 2021 If it is 😱😣😭
Kingston not going out odf business. It will be here in 2021!
5:17 floating train lol
RIP
Fare well
Why did they stop?
The local government is incredibly anti-railroad, and has several times done anything they can to try sabotaging this railroad, including one incident where the governor had a dump truck parked on the tracks to prevent any trains from running. The good news is that the Catskill Mountain Railroad was able to get a new 5-year lease which will allow them to continue running out of Kingston. The section up in Mount Tremper is also back up and running for now, but it will be shut down by the end of the year and taken over by another company, who intends on using the line for some rail-bike operation rather than running actual trains.
same with CSX's North Branch line back in Bergen county The company of CSX doesn't care about the budget which is money the CSX River line is free and busy but this historic railroad was abandoned in NJ
liberty railfan productions caught the end of the catskill mountain railroad
SORRY TO SEE IT GO/ NICE TRY. got to hate. railroad haters WHAT THE HELL DO THEY THINK BUILT THIS COUNTRY
It's too bad now that they finally built up business and they loose it all.
Kind of like breaks and brakes...Breaks bad...Brakes good...lol
i see that google say it is still ruining am i see and reading that wrong
Anthony Smith You misspelled their misspelling....lol
A sad farewell wave. :-(
Saved! Haha!
This is like cnw in 1995
Politics can't trust them!
It's NOT the politicians....it's FINANCES
Only in America do passenger railways get abandoned. Damn car industries.
More so corrupt politicians in this case.
Throw in the stupid not in my backward hippie liberal douches. All they want is bike paths then never maintain them. All part of the socialist de industrialization of Agenda 21.
Ya, I agree xy z!
the way AMERICA goes in 21st century....lost!
How much do you owe don’t buy from those evil people
But where is techno music?
I hated to hear this news 🥲🚂
We still operate in Kingston. ☺
@@train5974 Oh that’s great. You go from Kingston to where?
@@samanthab1923 .Town of Hurley. About 4 miles. To route 28a.
@@train5974 Thanks. I’ve never been up that way but my mom & uncles always talked of visiting.
@@samanthab1923 .would like them to come up sometime.
And it died so it could replaced by a walking trail that is so stupid
This is the most depressing country in the world to be a railfan. All our industry went to China and other countries.
EUA Very country of world
This blows

Its a s1.
