Private Equity in Our Health Care System

- We cannot allow CEOs like Dr. de la Torre and wealthy private equity executives to treat our health care system as their own personal piggy bank. We have got to make sure that what happened at Steward never happens again.
Health care should not be a profit center! Greed is killing us!
Literally!
Health should be saving lives not metrics or profits. SMH
You're EXACTLY CORRECT!!
😢Bernie is the best & I'll always consider him my President because nobody has more compassion, empathy & integrity than Bernie .
Sure there's a few that have empathy, etc but nobody literally cares more than Senator Sanders. The DNC I've lost ALL respect for because they were unfairly biased against Bernie in 2016 & 2020. Debbie W S congresswoman from Florida I no longer support - I wish some TRUSTWORTHY Democrat would challenge her.
BERNIE NEEDS TO OUT HER CAMPAIGN FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE STATEMENT & THAT OF MANY OTHERS. IT'S A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD SO BERNIE NEEDS TO OUT ALL CORRUPT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AILE.
Dr. de la Torre needs jail time. His "toys" should be confiscated and then fines on top of that... then the proceeds need to go to rebuilding what he destroyed.
Its WAY PAST TIME FOR A UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES.
I stand with Bernie Sanders because *BERNIE* *SANDERS* *STANDS* *FOR* *US!!!!!*
@@modemmark421I need Bernie to stop standing and start actually doing something
@NicholasAchladis he's one man we need a majority in the House the Senate and Harris-Walz in the White house.
@annemc41 we had a majority in the House and the Senate. 2020-2022. What was his excuse then?
@@annemc41Dr. Jill Stein is the only platform on the ballots with Medicare for all and a plan to implement it. Harris is on the Israeli and private equity payroll and has less than 0 interest in getting you healthcare
They have done the same thing to housing!
Medicaid Estate Recovery
Thank you Bernie Sanders for all you do. You're great 👍.
yeah, for all you do, except for supporting harris? what's up bern? all they do is screw you, and by extension us. why not west? why not stein? why not someone who gives a f v ck about us? huh, bernie?
It is insidious to have health care owned by private equity firms.
Humanity is NOT a commodity! People over profits!
💯
This is 💯 unacceptable.
Private Equity are the two most obscene words in America.
My tears are hot with anger and my heart is broken.
Why is this not on ABC or NBC news??? This nurse and I am sure all the others are traumatized and will forever remember these deaths.
This is not on ABC or NBC because they are in bed with the very conglomerates that close these hospitals. ABC and NBC are themselves conglomerates that, like de la Torre, do not give a damn about poor, sick people. That's why I don't have cable. Why would I give my pennies to an industry that wants me dead? Watch FREESPEECH TV.
Absolutely!!!!!!!Right on....in my small state 9 hospitals shut down.... Private Equity...Dr. de la Torre.....Bernie tells the truth....Thank you Bernie!!!!!!!!!!!!
as a senior I have been on the receiving end of private equity owned health care systems & it's disastrous in so many ways. We need Medicare for ALL/single payor bc these private equity firms finds ways to operate that are legal! All about PROFIT at the expense of health care.
Yet... the Safe Nurse to Patient Ratios Bill still flounders in Congress.... SMH!
can't have nurses with no education and closed borders
@@intellectually_lazy ???
I concur, Senator. Thank you.
the difference is he really doesn't care.
@@jaynfontain6635 meh, i thought he did, but why's he still backing harris instead of west or stein?
Third party candidates can't get the job done. They are good at getting points into the public discussion, but they may take votes away from a candidate who does have the broader support needed to get things done.
As someone impacted by losing Nashoba Valley Medical Center, thank you for conducting this hearing and pursuing this.
We need universal access to healthcare. The Federal government should be the only healthcare provider, the sole owner of all medical provider facilities. There should be no private equity involved in the provision of a universal need of the population. There should be no disadvantage scam plans, no prior authorization, no out of network fees. Will we never get this right?
look at Australia's model..universal health care...in America it is corporate greed not health care need
We need to take money interests out of healthcare and out of politics. There is no place for profits when determining people's health and futures. Strengthen anti-trust and make new laws to prevent corporate greed from overpowering public good!
maybe...maybe, we need to stop using money, for anything, ever
And housing!!!!
Private Equity and its affect on extractive nature reduces competition, employment, and damages successful business models for short term profits (Share holders).
Private equity egregiously “extractive”; and no way to recover these lost care assets. They are pirates and marauders with licenses to practice. 💀☠️👿🤯🤥

The systemic greed described in this hearing is so important and lessons from it should be taught in medical and nursing schools. Moral risk to providers imposed to benefit investors.
Ralph de la Torre does not deserve the privilege of a prison cell. He does not deserve the cost of feeding and housing him. He does not even deserve the air that he breathes.
People are greedy and, in my opinion, greed is the main reason why we need a democracy. Division of powers in the government is largely, in a democracy to regulate the greed of ourselves. It is amazing that in world of AI that we allow so many flagrant violations of our basic principles regularly having large or even catastrophic effect on the voters and the world. Infinite Blessings to Bernie!
Another for profit company which has bought over 120 non profit hospitals, clinics and real estate is Healthcare Corporation of America.
we need free, universal health care, and we need free education and to outlaw private insurance to make that happen
and, of course, to outlaw private equity in all things
I’d like my tax dollars to support public healthcare and public education. Aren’t the Defense hawks still justifying spending thousands on a screwdriver or nah?
@@cynthiamoore7056 prolly, especially with attacks on public disclosure laws
Reports of this from nurses and patients have been published for years now, and the patients still languished without care and even died. This for-profit disaster in the guise of medical care should never have been allowed in the first place, and it's too late for those who suffered and died.
American are in better shape because of your continued support & services @Senator Sanders 💙💙 we appreciate your efforts 💙💙🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you Bernie 🇺🇸🇺🇸💙💙
This is heartbreaking.
unfortunately, that condition is not covered
I’m over whelmed just listening to her speak. You can see this woman is totally exhausted.🥲🥲 there barely hanging on mentally. Help these nurse , please & these workers. The nurses have been traumatized, stressed out. This is why that dr. won’t show up..😡😡 he doesn’t care about the hospital, staff, patients. Nobody … 😢😢
Long term care CNA here: we went from 12 to 22 residents plus 2-3 showers each. Scheduler was fired and everybody put on a 4on-2off schedule. A lot of people quit, people who had been there 20+years. This administrator ruined a sister facility in the same town before coming to our facility, he said we had not been profitable in 5 years... He is gone now. He also cut a lot of the trees and shrubs and threw away all of maintenance's spare parts. But he did not care that the water in some toilets was running endlessly...
So, what are you going to do about it?
Suggest a new program for you and say hello to Putin
@eleonorabartoli2225 please be more specific
Omg this is tragic. Healthcare is a right of everyone in this nation. We have the resources to do it. It's beyond time to stop these robber barons from profiting off our misery! I'll never understand how these millionaires and billionaires sleep at night knowing people are homeless and hungry and not getting the healthcare they need! If i were rich I'd be finding ways to help make things better rather than buying houses and cars and jewelry. They should be ashamed of themselves!
Del la Torre needs to be in prison and his assets ceased immediately !!! 🤬
The Federal government needs to own all hospitals. Period.
No, senator Murphy, hospitals do not need surplus. They need enough to deliver the best care possible while still giving the staff living income.
These large hospital corporations understaff and underpay to increase profits for executives and shareholders.
This private equity is Not Only In Hospitals. It is in our small towns, there buying our water sources that the town ran in small towns, suburbs. I think it’s in our electric also happening…😡
And housing everywhere
Excellent point. Privatization is causing multiple problems.
Why aren't Committee Members required to be present for all hearings ? They are supposed to be working for the people's best interests.
The greatest president that never was. Still feeling the Bern in 2024.
Thank you Senator Sanders for all of your hard work in helping people keep believing change can happen. I hope that better days will come from this experience. I hope so and hope that the community will demand better for our workers so they can continue to care for us in our greatest need.
To have enough people to staff the hospitals we need to move to a universal healthcare system we need free education fire doctors , nurses and other staff
Amazing how so many wealthy care nothing about anyone but themselves. I couldn't live with myself doing this to humans. What a sad, greedy soul these people have. Thank you Senator Sanders for all you try to do for the rest of us.
They lack morals and their souls are doomed
They lack morals and their souls are doomed you may not agree with all Bernie’s policies. BUT HE CARE THAT YOU DESERVE THE SAME HEALTHCARE THAT HE HAS
bah! if there was a warrant on me and i disregarded it, i'd be snatched from my home or the street, held ransom for a small sum i still can't afford and hopefully not beaten or murdered. no one would be begging congress for permission to do something about me
Bernie, go get them!
It seems that rich people are trying hard to make America fall . 😢
How can they not know that every private enterprise is profit based and collectively control not only the economy but politics and politicians as well!
This is absolutely appalling! We are supposed to be the greatest nation in the world but yet here we are fighting a system for basic needs and human rights! America, you can do better!
I'm disappointed that Harris is pulling away from M4A. The Majority of Americans want it.
Hoping she will evolve. And soon!
She has to in order to get elected. There are too many people in this country listening to the wrong side. To them, universal healthcare is that evil word that must not be spoken (socialism) and it would be disastrous if she tried to platform on it. We're going to have to do it in stages. If we can get the right people in office for long enough to do meaningful healthcare reform, we will definitely be moving in the right direction.
When health care is for profit, it becomes business care. We need accountability and consequences.
What consequences will Dr. De La Torre experience by simply not showing up to this hearing?
This is why we need to democratize the workplace - including hospitals! Let the people who work at the hospitals control the hospitals!
Not a good idea. That would place healthcare at the mercy of local awareness. I challenge anyone who thinks they know something about being poor and disabled to live on $0 day with only food and medicine. We have officials proposing we take those things away too.
@@SaveOurDisabilityFund No, that would place the hospitals, clinics, etc in the control of the people who staff those places. And that would be true socialism. Those are the people who understand the needs of their patients and their own needs. Not just doctors, but the receptionists, nurses, cleaners, technicians, etc. Remember, those people work there too and they are also deserving of a vote in the enterprise. In other words, no more corporate owners, no more venture capitalist owners, no more doctor-capitalist owner. And, yes, they would have to be answerable to the community. And yes, they would be so much more aware of the needs of the local community.
With this set up everywhere, and a commitment to caring for everyone, poverty can be made obsolete. The only reason we have poverty is that we have an employer class. I am convinced that I and everyone else in similar conditions would not be poor if we got rid of the employer class. Sure there's more we need to do, but that would be a hell of a great start.
@patriciacvener1968 Every kind of person exists in healthcare. Honest and dishonest. There has to be more than a singular mechanism in place to ensure safety, honesty, quality, and compliance with regulations and/or procedure. If your doctor lies to you so they can get to lunch earlier in order to hit on the hot new nurse obviously that's going to affect the quality of healthcare you receive. No industry or profession can be trusted to self regulate.
If I claimed to be the fattest man on earth wouldn't you want me to step on a scale rather than just take me at my word?
I don't trust a religious institution to hire medical staff that knows or cares about patients needs to provide the best care possible. Right now we have hospitals owned by religious institutions. They're an obviously antithetical figure to be reaching into medical science.
Obviously you're not suffering with a complex disability if you think every doctor and nurse you encounter is guaranteed dedicated to the purpose of their current tasks. I would never wish my disability on anyone but I can't stress enough the need for regulatory standards. There's huge gaps in what we have now.
Mayo clinic for example is no longer a place for ordinary people to go if they want quality care. They have too much money and standards are often set aside. They coast more on their reputation now. You'll only get quality care there if you're rich & famous.
@@SaveOurDisabilityFund You know I really hate it when someone thinks they can assume to know anything about me from just one online, youtube conversation. However, I will attempt one more response then leave it alone.
I believe we are looking at the topic from very different perspectives. Mine is theoretical and future based. Yours is based in the pain and brokenness that pervades society now. In that respect, I understand your reticence. But even now, not all doctors or PAs or anyone else behaves badly and dishonestly. For example, I am a survivor of childhood rape by a physician, but I do not (any longer) assume every physician is a danger to me. Moreover, even in my scenario it is not a single entity that would be "in-charge." And there would be processes to see that no one is left to fend for themself. Neither patient nor staff.
Lastly, I am unsure why you are bringing religion into our conversation since it does not, as far as I am concerned, have any place in our dialogue.
Be well.
@patriciacvener1968 Your comment was about "democratization" of hospitals. I don't disagree with the sentiment. We do have far too many maverick industries that just run over the rules and people watch too many news stories that involve people "overcoming" their disabilities or conditions. When the reality is more often people having to live with them and you can't get quality care through self-regulation. Doctors and patients tend to make decisions about what choices are made but when procedures are done there needs to be standards and I don't have time for dictator doctors that decide on their own that the blood of a virgin mongoose is a viable treatment option.
The wellness industry exists alongside of healthcare but unlike healthcare workers they aren't regulated. I don't believe that industry should be allowed to feed on funding that is intended to actively help those in need of quality care. What you'll end up with is pseudoscience that won't be effective at treating your ailments. Government has always had a role to get to where we are. We can't just abandon that so a yoga enthusiast can get insurance money and pretend they're providing medical care. Yoga isn't medicine but the enthusiasts are always trying to get their claws into doctors so they can get your insurance money. The only thing that prevents that is regulation and standards of care.
Religious institutions own the vast majority of hospitals in the US. They control the funds and decide on religious basis what procedures are allowed. They are why we have abortion bans. They directly affect the care we all receive. You cannot have a fair discussion about hospitals and healthcare without bringing them up.
You want to attract new medical people? Give them the control of their workplace! Same with support staff.
Sadly, Sen. Romney has a financial stake in private equity. Should he have recused himself from this hearing due to a conflict of interest?
his past corruptive practices in Bain Financial doest help portfolio
I am a retail pharmacy technician. My bosses, especially the lead pharmacist, would actually be proud of all the extra hours we had at the end of each week. He would proudly boast about it all the time. I never understood it bc we always complained about needing more staff, even he complained about it. I now wonder if he (a registered pharmacist) was getting kickbacks for being under tech hours from the grocery store I worked for. We would be under by 80+hrs a week!!!! this is just one example of how bad healthcare is in general but they ACTUALLY WANT TO BE UNDER HOURS AND I HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE WATCHING THEM BE GLAD WHILE THE PATIENTS AND WORKERS SUFFER. I actually quit partly due to the emotional toll of knowing patients weren't getting care as they should've and fighting with doctors and my bosses about the most petty things instead of caring about the patients.
A higher marginal tax rate for these companies around 50 to 60 % would force companies to put money back into the hospitals or pay the money in taxes . It would incentivize keeping the hospitals running to keep it profitable.
That’s like giving vitamin C in lieu of chemotherapy.
We need to cancel all debt owed to these oligarchs, and then set about nationalizing the wealth they stole from us.
Thanks SENATOR Sanders...
*It* *Ain't* *Gonna* *Change* *Unless* / *Until* *WE* *Change* *It!!!!!*
I stand with Bernie Sanders because *BERNIE* *SANDERS* *STANDS* *FOR* *US!!!*
Thank you Bernie! We need to transition to a not for profit healthcare system and that still pays good compensation to doctors, nurses and all healthcare workers.
Just broken
The nurses suffer the worst of this epidemic
Pandemic crushed the health care system and it really needs a new approach for everyone concerned
Thank you for your honesty and decency in testifying for those who are lost and suffering and for the families who seek justice
Omg…this is absolutely criminal and the man should be locked up for what he’s done to the people in these communities and the staff at the hospitals. Just a regular day working at the hospital is stressful enough, and there’s so much to do and not enough hands and eyes to do it all. To add on to what these nurses and patients already are struggling through is just the bottom of the barrel for Stewart Healthcare. The coward was too scared to show his face at the hearing.
Hello Senator, I hope you have a feeling well and have a great day.
The majority of hospitals in Massachusetts are having the same issues the hospitals are in a dangerous situation of failing
I'm amazed, and somehow not, that this video has only 10k views... Only reason people think the government does nothing for them is because they put a nothing effort into understanding our government and how it works. It is not fair, but in comparison to the rest of the world (which is OUR ENTIRE existence, within our limited scope) you would think that people would put in more effort. But again, they've already given up and that's the fault of said politicians. Give us a reason to care, and that reason is Senator B. Sanders and those who are built like him. I'm thankful for you Mr. Sanders, and your integrity is palpable. I've watched you fight for legislation and humanitarian reasons since I knew what those were, and I am forever grateful. I know yi😢will never run for president, but I hope that your the equivalent of a Roy Cohen to someone who will make the changes to our country that will simultaneously bring us back, while carrying us forward!
“Corporate said no,” I bet my life that most people can relate. How many of us depend on corporations for our survival? They’ve got us by our balls and necks. Americans must unite, educate ourselves, and ORGANIZE to change the status quo. We can do it but if we don’t we will not survive. The best way to honor all the victims of corporate America is by dismantling the evil that has possessed humanity to be complicit in its extinction. Will humanity prevail?
Thank you Bernie 💙
Fantastic the de la Torre grifter should be in jail.
This happens to companies all the time through private equity in venture capital. It is atrocious that it happens now within the healthcare system.
Whoever captured this video made a big mistake and should have had the caption at the bottom left at the top right.
You cannot see the people's names or their badge monikers on the desk because you have put the health education labor and pensions committee.
Over virtually everyone's name who is speaking .
If you notice that that moniker is putting over someone's placard on their desk during the video move it and put it in a different corner..
What's amazing is this guy did not show up to the Congressional subpoena and he is out walking the streets. The guy should be in jail...

Non profit health care is a must for all people
This is rich... Mitt Romney talking about how private equity was bad for healthcare when he was the "Godfather of private equity". Remember Bain Capital???
Where’s Abbott while this guy fleeced Texas hospitals?
This is not surprising. It's been pretty obvious that care has gone downhill due to understaffing. How abhorrent to do that to our medical community, particularly to nurses. Is it any wonder there is a shortage of nurses? NOT acceptable!
How come so many of those senate seats are empty? Where are our representatives, maybe they do not care about issues like this? Who are they working for.
Greed is killing our nation and the souls of those who participate. Not to mention their victims.
Universal Healthcare would solve all this. That's why they don't want it. These people need to be charged with crimes against humanity. The lot of them. The families who lost loved ones at their hands need to be compensated with the profits from the sale of their material goods.
I suggest a constitutional amendment to prevent private equity in the healthcare system. Also I believe it's time for a universal health care for the USA.
The riches country in the world should provide health care for all people one does not deserve better care than any other human being

The financial industry's takeover of our health system guarantees that medical costs will only increase to bolster shareholder's profits. What incentive is there to improve health outcomes for patients when denying the use of better but more expensive diagnostic tools or expensive but better treatments is best for the corporate bottom line. Patient health or their bottom line - which will they choose?
6:58 not the pictures of the yacht and jets 😂😂😂 Bernie came with receipts!!! A message needs to be sent that YOURE NOT GOING TO GET RICH OFF OF HEALTHCARE OR HOUSING OR EDUCATION. You want to get rich? Then create something, innovate something, but NOT IN HEALTH CARE OR HOUSING OR EDUCATION.

Health care for all is the answer. It proves to be less expensive and keeps people healthy and prevents many deaths
I am a beneficiary of Universal Health in Australia..YAY
Trump wants to privatize health care. He says he likes the elderly, but most likely the rich. He doesn't say if he likes the middle or lower income. After all, what better way to get rid of poverty. Just bump them off!
Trump has been bought and paid for by the rich tech bros. Peter Thiel and elon musk were the reason he chose JD Vance as his running mate. His tax plan was prettied up by small tax cuts for the middle class and HUGE tax cuts for the rich. He also rolled back since of the protections of the dodd-frank act which were regulations passed after the recession to try and stop some of the risky practices of investment banks. He also ballooned the deficit almost 8 trillion dollars because of his tax plan. He's also promised elon musk a job slimming down the government in exchange for millions of dollars.
I assure you, he cares nothing about the middle and lower class other than their vote. He's said as much.
Thank you.
If anyone is still behind further privatization of government SERVICES/agencies after hearing this, they are part of the problem. Corporations may be really good at making money but only for the C suite and investors and sometimes after reaping profits, they just go bankrupt showing that they are not really good at business either.
Is that corp called Cerebus (sp?) or Cerberus, the mythological dog that guards the gates of Hell?
Look into UHS and HCA owned Facilities! They have been doing this exact same thing since the 70s and 80s.
I retired after 30 yrs. I could not take it anymore. I’m glad I’m old enough to able to retire finally. Corporate greed is killing every American dream except for the wealthy.
this is diabolical.
Good segment have dialog build on.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
As Milton Friedman instructed, the American producers, corporations owe nothing to customers, communities, or any subdivision on being associated with any corporation. The only commitments a corporation owes is to the stakeholder, stockholder of a particular corporation. Other entities associated with corporations are not relevant to the present economic system presently implemented in the United States.
These rich politicians and billionaires controlling them need to put THEIR money into these institutions and implement the changes needed. Until we make them (the billionaires and politicians) put THEIR money into the public sector and make it NOT FOR THEIR PROFIT, this will continue to happen. Billionaires only want more money.. they do not give two shits about the individual. I am not a socialist but I am not for this type of capitalism.
