    What I love the most about UE5 and Epic Games is that they're putting high quality game/film development in the hands of everyone with a computer that can run it. From indie developers to HUGE AAA studios. God bless them.

      Post: I didn't know this before this video, but Unreal Engine, either version 4 or 5, are free to use.
      Any costs that Epic charges happens if the thing you make is sold "off-the-shelf", via either brick-and-mortar or e-commerce retailers, and when total sales go above $1 mil USD.
      At that $1 mil USD point, Epic charges at 5% fee from there on as revenue grows. This is the default case too, which can be negotiated to even have no fees

      @@XSHABX A game engine is like a sandbox, really. It's like the workplace we use to get stuff done. In my opinion, it's infrastructure that enables developers and filmmakers to create their visions.
      Having an entity dedicated to the maintenance and improvement of said infrastructure only benefits everyone

    Unreal is both accessible, pretty easy to start with, expansive for adding new options, and constantly upping their tech. This is the way all programs ought to be to make creativity an accessible outlet regardless of what you create.

      @@guest1805 sounds good. Build a physics/graphics engine from the ground up for your game and you'll quickly see that UE is incredibly easy compared to the alternative - especially with the graphics quality you get out of it.

      But joking aside, I prefer Unity's more abstract approach to game object components as opposed to Unreal's more rigid character-actor-pawn approach. Just makes more sense for they types of games I make

      Unity is good for setting up a basic 3d environment with objects, but good luck making an actual player controlling system, fps or otherwise, or getting one someone else made to work either. And if the tiniest unknown thing is wrong with one script whether used or not, it's mere presence in the project files bricks the whole project, meaning it won't let you even try to playtest. Unreal idk because it always freezes when a project is loaded or started. Maybe my PC doesn't have the guts to handle it. I'm trying unity but again, even the visual scripting results in unplayability. What a shame.

    The crazy part about this, is it will get even easier as the years go by. Everyone is going to be making something at some point, and I’m not just talking about UE5. The video looks like Star Citizen grade graphics - minus the 10 years and $500 million crowd funding.

      @@nbayoungboy1059 it's because finding dedicated people who can do the job is expensive they normally have worked hard and want fair compensation to pay off student loans, mortgages, etc. Besides that the company itself has profit quotas to meet for shareholders. If anything expect them to be more expensive in the future because I'd think unreal engine isn't free either (could be wrong on that though sometimes the internet is nifty like that)

    Is there an option to add random asymmetry to Metahuman faces? One of the most subtly disturbing things is that video game faces are perfectly symmetrical; no human face, no matter how pretty, is perfectly symmetrical.

      @@jaaaaaaaaaaaaaay To be fair, those are very small leaps. Like comparing Tomb Raider Underworld to Tomb Raider 2012. Compare PS1/N64 to SNES/Sega. Compare PS2/Xbox/GC to PS1/N64. Compare PS3/360 to previous gen etc. Also note how the improvements are smaller and smaller with each generation. Its so observable its almost like "a scientific law".
      I still firmly believe there will never be a leap even CLOSE to as gigantic as when PS1/N64 came out.

    I remember UE1 and how gamers were losing their minds. Playing Unreal 1 was a real treat back in the day. The term "Yes, these are ALL POLYGONS" sounds weird today, but back then.... Wow.

      you might find Highrise City interesting. I read they are working on UE5 already in a super early alpha, but right now it is available in UE4.

      @@TheBaxes Indie will still prefer Unity over Unreal. It is simply unrealistic for indie developers to use such complex and high end framework for their games because of the amount of knowledge required to use Unreal Engine AND C++ (hardest prog. language by far). Not only knowledge but these stunning views and advantages comes with a price and that is "Workload". Unreal puts quality and performance on top and tries to be most elegant of its kind. and its successfull as you see. but this intellectual property is made for studios that have at least 15 senior developers working for them. If indie were to make a game with Unity in 2 years, UE will probably take about 3.5 years at least.

    All of this is amazing, and I embrace the evolution in technology. The only gripe I have, specifically with the marketplace, is that since everyone is using the same assets, lots of projects are just gonna end-up taking the same assets and be recycled over and over. Perhaps in the beginning this won't be a big deal, but as years go by I suppose it'll become more troublesome.

      I was thinking the same thing. I'm assuming as time goes on the number of assets will increase as well which may help. Just a guess though.

      A game is not about its assets, it's about how well they are put together. You know, soccer is not about people running with a ball, it's about what comes out of it, all the variations of human behavior and interaction. Same with any sports. In fact, many sports involving a ball are similar to each other, and yet they are so different in tactics, strategy and what not.

      Sure, it happened with UE3 but on the flipside, the ease of use allowed many devs to fulfill their visions within budgets and timeframes and we were spoiled with many great games with the sacrifice of having similar visuals

      I'm not 100% sure, but i think nanite isn't supported for vr (at least for now, or when ue5 was on alpha). You could still use lumen and stuff, just they can't throw millions of polygons

So let me get this straight: they developed Nanite, Lumen, and all thatmind-blowing new tech for this software that is completely free and open source? all those extremely high-quality assets that they scanned, all free? backwards compatibility and conversion for 15+ year old UE4 projects?     edit: okay, *technically* it's not open source, but the source code is public. Which is still insane considering how valuable Lumen/Nanite is

      They obviously intend to make UE the industry-leading engine again. It's not entirely selfless though. They will profit from the revenue made and they will surely try and push Epic Games exclusives. This is not criticism. I think it's really exciting for the game industry.

    The holy grail for me is achieving a near photorealistic city builder with the level of complexity and nuanced interactivity that the latest Matrix tech demo alludes to being able to do.
    Can you imagine building a megacity of 20 or 40M ppl. And having the option of interacting as a character in GTA5 style, then having an AI powerful enough to create a game narrative on the fly that Star Citizen devs can only dream about.
    Add to this the ability to expand said city to an entire nation all interacting with NPCs having fully fleshed out lives and working or travelling within your virtual nation from city to city, coast to coast and maybe even world to world if set in a scifi settings. A true technological marvel to behold. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5 we are one step closer to that dream.

    I've been working on a passion project in UE4 for almost 4 years now and UE5 is an actual game changer. It's actually insane how much time it cut thanks to the improvements and changes in UE5, the games that will come from this will be crazy.

      Its 2022 and EVERY SINGLE GAME (except a few Rockstar games) are STILL using "2002 style ragdolls" (yes, 2002!). General physics atleast HAVE advanced a but. Ragdoll physics? "Nah, we'll just keep on using literally ancient technology because we can't be bothered to figure out how to do what Rockstar did in 2007" - Every single AAA game developer except RS since 2007!

    I grew up when home computers became a new thing. 3D came later and even wire frame jerky motion stuff was amazing. That we have reached this level in my lifetime is astounding. We are living in my childhoods future for sure. Utterly incredible.

    Simply extraordinary! I can remember my first computer, a 48k Sinclair Spectrum, and my amazement when I played the Hobbit on it and it painfully slowly, but nonetheless rendered, a 2D scene to compliment the text adventure. Truly, we now live in an age of wonder.

Back then, movies still came out on VHS alongside DvD. I also played the SNES a bit. Enough to remember super mario and duck hunt. Compared to today, some games are of little substance. Seemingly intentionally, great graphics but weak stories.

    This is incredible. I remember the days when most assets had to be crafted entirely by hand. All this automation and streamlining of the video game development workflow will lead to amazing creations that were not feasible before. I can't wait!

      That aspect of game development has been really unintuitive. Why would you need a custom model of a rock for each game? There is no real reason for creating the basic stuff from scratch every time, other than copyright reasons. Well, now that is going to change, as well. It already has.

      @@fulconini this. Originallity is the big one. Eventually everyone will recognize these free assets in every game and they'll be bored for each game. Yes certain assets are more reusable than others (like a rock) but you'll either need really compelling gameplay, or unique assets to really set yourself apart in the space when everyone is using these same assets.

      @@HerbaMachina It's like watching a movie. Do you recognize which other movie used, say, the same kind of chair the main character sits on in a scene? Does it matter? Or two different movies shot on the same location that "plays" a different place in each of those films? Same idea.
      Also, a game uses a really small number of assets and places hundreds, if not thousands, of copies of each of them possibly in the same environment. Nobody cares if a forest is made out of a single tree model scaled and rotated randomly. It's the same when that tree is used in another game, as well. I bet individual studios already recycle whatever they can get away with from their own earlier titles, even if their games are radically different from each other. Now that convenience comes with the engine.
      Those are the things I was talking about. The basic stuff.

      @@Karlach_ and the hardware is gonna stop changing, the improvements between each generation of computing have gotten smaller and smaller; companies have simply gotten better at marketting.
      Take a long look at the distance between each generation of play station for example, each one was very impressive at the time of release, ps1 to ps2 was absolutely massive, ps2 to ps3 was fairly big, almost every game that came out for the ps4 worked looked like it could have run on the ps3 with a bit of work, and the ps5 has a new m.2 ssd and pretended like it was revolutionary

    Your example scene with the room and chair lighting really caught my attention. Lumen and Nanite seem to be huge time saving tools. Not having to bake lightmaps and not having to generate LODs, result in the production workflow being way lighter and faster. I like to see that Epic Games is pushing things in the right way.

    I'm mostly worried about file bloat. Lumen helps immensely by removing baked lighting from the equation, but Nanite encourages monstrous levels of geometry.

      Wouldn't there be less file bloat via nanite though? Instead of having multiple models of an asset so that it increases in detail as you get closer, you have one file that is having polygons dynamically changed. Sure this may give a reason for studios to make even higher quality assets, but I would think having multiple is still more space.

      UE5 won't cure bad resource management, but the possibilities for smaller files with less work when it's well thought out is a big step forward. I'm more excited at the thought of indie games with better poly-count since the few 3d artists that work on each project will no longer put themselves in a corner (in needing to create low poly replicas) by doing so.

      I think you are looking at this the wrong way.
      Nanite only works with static geometry. Most static geometry is going to be rendered at a certain level of detail and then have LODs for when you are far away, generally you aren't going to go higher than your most detailed model because you still have a polygon budget for your scene, so essentially you are just removing the LODs which means you are using less storage for your asset.
      I'd imagine you can probably get away with having a slightly higher poly assets since Nanite is probably better at managing your poly budget because it's essentially dynamically doing LOD, but look at the Matrix demo on Xbox - the filesize was only around 30GB and that was essentially a graphical tech demo pushing the limits of visual fidelity in order to demo what the engine is capable of.

      Just because Nanite *can* handle monstrous levels of geometry doesn't mean it's always *necessary* to do so. Most standard high quality meshes would do fine, then if there's ever a need to go to 13 million polygons, the ability is there to do so.

    This is really great, it feels like for a while the majority of studios and devs have been at a big technological disadvantage compared to big studios in terms of graphics and realistic effects just because they don't have as many resources. UE5 gives them some pretty impressive new tools.

    I have a question. Does nanite decide the amount of triangles it will decrease to based on how many pixels we are seeing ? So if my screen is 1080p, does nanite give me less triangles than it would if my screen was 4k ? Because that would make a lot of sense.

      Basically I'm working with a colleague of mine in a game that u can play it as a single player or co-op (with friends), it is a first person shooter and the environment it's apocaliptic - action based, survival, crafting, etc.
      We are using Unreal Engine 5 for it, it is heavy indeed, but there are features that are really good to bet on to keep going with the project.

      Yeah, I think a lot of gamers are missing that Nanite isn't just about making the end result have more detail(even if it *can* and does do that) - what's exciting about Nanite is that it allows you to just drop your high-detail models into the game engine without having to bake out a normal map and wrap it on a lower-poly version etc. It will let artists spend more time making art and less time making their art "work" in the game engine.

    Can anybody help me out choosing a new system? :) ... does anyone have an idea of which laptop would be good enough to run all the features of UE5?
    Im currently running a Asus, 16gb, Nvidia 960m, i7, and it's just not enough for rendering real time.
    An Asus with a 3080ti and 64gb i9 would do the trick, but thats a little overpowered? So what would be a minimum workable alternative?

    The lighting will be a huge game changer. I hope to see some awesome ways developers play around with this new feature (closing off caves, unblocking windows to get out, time changing, etc).

    This is mind blowing... Just imagine where videogames will go with options like this at their disposal.
    5 years from now, we'll be at a point where it's incredible difficult to tell real life from animation.
    I's kind of scary, haha.

    I think the "key" for this to emulate "real" environments, is the lumens, the light. When you do achieve the the emulation, you won't be able to tell if it's real or faked...

    It’s literally at the very border of being extremely hard to tell whether it’s real life or not for normal viewers. If Unreal Engine 5 looks this amazing I can only imagine how insane Unreal Engine 6 would be (in fact I’m sort of afraid people would try to create deep fakes if taken a step further).

    I just wonder how games with stylized graphics, like Sea of Thieves, would look like in UE5. Graphics are amazing nowadays, but I don't like only seeing photorealistic projects. I want to see what developers can do with this tech when focusing on cartoony looks

      @@gunkanjima3408 I don't find photorealistic games set on modern times visually interesting because they look like real life. Take a game like Breath of the Wild. On a technical level, it's unimpressive, but on an artistic level, it's beautiful.
      My point is just that devs have all the technology to create whatever they can imagine, so focusing on just replicating real life is unimaginative

    I love how if you move an object back and forth the shadow will look like a wave due to temporal build-up of light! :)

    I wonder how the advances UE5 provides will realize themselves in actual game development. I'm thinking about Nanite, in particular. The engine can handle it, even on my old computer to an extent, sure. They still can't go overboard with polygons (and textures) if they don't want the storage needs of the final product to explode into the terabyte realm.

      How much storage do you really need for polygons? In fact, I don't think Nanite even changes anything about storage requirements. What it seems to do is optimize how many polygons of an object are rendered based on the distance from camera.

      @@renx81 I think he’s referring to the potential for much greater detail to be implemented (potentially even 16 times the detail!!😱) due to the increased performance. If an order of magnitude greater detail is used and is able to run, which may just be a function of what is available for game makers to use and not necessarily a direct result of Nanite itself, I would think it would cost more in storage than last generation products that had less detail and relied on LODs.

      @@gabegalley6879 But you also have to remember they won't have to make 2-4 extra copies of a model for the LODs, so while this creates the problem of games' getting even bigger than before, maybe even too big, it also cuts down on the 'bloat' that all those extra LOD models create. Also, once you reach the level of detail of real life, their isn't any reason for models to get more detailed, so eventually the size of games will plateau. Overall though, I do think the size of games, especially AAA games, will get even bigger in the near future.

      @@liarwithagun Thank you, I didn't even consider LODs, but you are absolutely right.
      @Gabe Galley, I see your point, but I still don't think it's anywhere near as big of an issue as the OP said. When we get to games that are more than a terabyte in size, it will be mostly due to other things such as texture quality. And the growing size of video games will be greatly mitigated by the growing size of hard drives and the growing speed of internet connections.
      By the way, a big chunk of storage in today's games is reserved for cut scenes, which could be greatly reduced using this new engine.

    A cool way to use the real time lighting is by having a scene where a train is rolling along beside a building and the shadows of the cars are shining through an interior window in a room that the Player is walking through.

    I've always used Unity, and I never really cared about making next gen graphics, but I gotta say, UE5 is really impressive.
    I'm a bit worried though about what this will mean for asset flip games, currently they are already a big problem, but for anyone who knows a little about game development they are easy to spot (unfortunately not so for others it seems), but I fear with UE5 they will be harder to recognize, making it even more difficult for actual indie games to get noticed.

      Why do you think this is a problem, if a game has good gameplay, but uses stock assets? Don’t think I’ve bought a game that is just an asset flip, although I do remember that “dreamworld” fooled a bunch of people recently.

      @@roqsteady5290 I think asset flip game only applies to games with next to no effort. If it has good gameplay then it isn't an asset flip game. The stock assets are there to be used and are not inherently bad on there own.

      @@roqsteady5290 Asset flip is a specific term used to describe low effort, bad games, which only rely on the assets to at least look decent. Steam and google play is flooded with thousands of asset flips from Unity engine. However, I don't think it is a big deal, most people will recognize asset flips, and they will just kinda be here as long as engines are available.f

I'm talking about how having pretty assets can make a crappy game seem good to people, so making it easier for fake developers (that are actually scammers) to make their game look pretty is worrying

      @@flamekite1679 I'd like to add, asset flip games are often crappily coded games, sold 10 different times on the steam store with different graphics dropped in for each different version. Hence the whole flipping assets name. Code one crap game, change the graphics 10 times, sell 10 different games. They are horrendously bad in most cases

    This is great, but I feel like we're entering true uncanny valley territory here. Realistic graphics are impressive, but realistic physics and animation will always lag behind. And that gap seems to widen even more, I feel. I already felt it very jarring to see that Matrix footage, with photorealistic actors, but still moving very artificially.

      They didn't look realistic enough, trust me, the lighting artifacts of modern CGI is awful, I hate how they treat human character models like light doesn't actually interact with it.

      @@livedandletdie Sony does a pretty good job though. Light actually bounces in Alloys face. The amount of detail is incredibly. The biggest benefits I see to UE5 is much faster development times and better frame rate due to the great memory management.

      @@mitronzongo Or the entire planet! "Microsoft Earth Simulator 2030".
      It could be like a realistic version of GTA where you can do literally anything and that you automatically download the areas you are in (like Google Maps or MSFS2020).
      I guess you would have to be able to spawn everywhere because of the large distances though.
      And maybe they would implement a crowdsourcing element where users can 3d-scan their areas with phones, dashcams or drones. Self-driving cars will probably also be used to scan bit-by-bit of every road. Maybe they could have like google street view cars, but loaded with small drone swarms that follow the car and scan everything in the area, then AI(similar to Two Minute Papers about Waymo) can be used to turn it into a 3d world.

      Its a dream. Flight sim is hard to run on high end hardware now as it is. It would require a ton more optimization and even higher end hardware. Hardware that's atleast 5 years away and even then not everyone would have it or be able to afford it. The new RTX 3090Ti FE is already $2K.

    I loved the dynamic polygon rendering, after using CAD to render entire interiors of buildings with multiple moveable objects computers with even 128 G of ram would start to stutter when changing perspectives. I hope that this can be implemented in more physics based environments once people get them down.

      The minimum requirements will always depend on how much fidelity is made into the game. The lighting and all. You can make a game in UE5 that can run on a 1060, you just wont be able to use the RT Global illumination. It's too demanding. For global illumination the minimum GPU would now be an RTX 3060 i'd imagine. Maybe a 2060.

      When you export an empty project to any platform, its size is at least 700 mb. But I love graphic of UE. Pubg mobile used UE. But it is too heavy for me to make mobile games.

    I remember watching toy story in 1995 and being amazed by the graphics . Pretty soon we won’t be able to tell if a full length movie is real or not. Also brings a lot of possibilities for the 3D world.

    Interesting, it looks like the lightning system builds an environment's lightning over time. I wonder if it's taking a handful of points, doing ray/path tracing, averaging for nearby points, and then layering a few cycles of lighting calculation. It would make sense, given how the shadows were a bit delayed from the actual movement of the object. Light takes a few frames to "expire", before it dims down to zero, and with the ray tracing happening every frame, you see a sort of average over the last few frames.

      This also me wonder if lightmapping could be hybridized so that it only recalculates the lightmaps that are immediately affected by a change in world geometry. Since as far as I know the process of ray tracing with large luxel sizes is pretty cheap, the shadow smoothing however is what takes time.

      100% sure, the lighting system works based on an iterative basis (of course). Each iteration takes into account more geometry and lighting inputs. But how they have implemented this is pure genius, as they are able to generate "good" details quickly within a frame or two but then generate "great" details within a few frames after that. Truly optimal use of modern-day graphics card technology and parallel computing.
