  • Everyone wants their car, pick-up truck, or mini-van's engine to run for a long time. But few people would ever envision an engine lasting over 1,000,000 miles. Justin Kilmer did just that with his Honda Accord's V6. Blackstone Joe talks with Justin Kilmer about his record-setting million miles on his Honda Accord's V-6, the maintenance it took to reach that mark, and how the engine looked in its Blackstone Laboratories samples.
    Host: Joe Adams
    Guest: Justin Kilmer

I'm the type who accumulates vehicles so it's surprising that none of my current rigs are particularly high mileage. I can thank divorce for that I guess. I'm sure I have put well over a million miles combined on all of the motorcycles I've owned during my lifetime. Easily a million miles on leased cars used when I was in field engineering. New Chevy Impala every year and the clock was always into 6 figures when I turned it in. My own personal cars not so much. I recently sold my 1996 LT-4 Corvette, purchased new. It had 15k miles on the clock. My 23 year old Mercedes E320, purchased new had 65k when I traded it in on my 2021 R/T hemi Challenger. I'm a very old man and tend to talk a lot.
In my younger years I drove mostly junk cars. I'd go to the junk yard and ask what they had for $50 that ran. I'd fix whatever caused the previous owner to junk it and then drive it into the ground. Literally. A car thief who had recently gotten out of prison taught me how to check the health of an engine by inspecting the spark plugs. I was maybe 15 years old or so. It was a baby step from there to recognize the value of inspecting the lubricants to find out more about the condition of an engine. But who has the dough to pay for professional oil analysis and prior to finding out about Blackstone where would I even send the samples?
In my old age I have gotten completely OCD about lubrication. The least little engine noise and out comes the stethoscope. I enjoy these podcasts as infrequent as they are. PLEASE! Space them out a bit. Silence for many months and then a dozen uploads?!?!? A segment or two on motorcycle (Harley) issues would be very welcome. You might want to reach out to Kevin Baxter who is a master engineer and a wizard with Harleys as he would be a great customer for Blackstone.
