Christ is made the sure foundation
Words: Latin, c7th--8th century, translated by John Mason Neale
Music: Henry Purcell
Sung by: Westminster Abbey Choir
Text:
Christ is made the sure foundation,
and the precious corner-stone,
who, the two walls underlying,
bound in each, binds both in one,
holy Sion's help for ever,
and her confidence alone.
All that dedicated city,
dearly loved by God on high,
in exultant jubilation
pours perpetual melody,
God the One, in threefold glory,
singing everlastingly.
To this temple, where we call thee,
come, O Lord of hosts, today;
with thy wonted loving-kindness,
hear thy people as they pray;
and thy fullest benediction
shed within its walls for ay.
Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
gifts of grace by prayer to gain;
here to have and hold for ever,
those good things their prayers obtain,
and hereafter, in thy glory,
with thy blessèd ones to reign.
Laud and honour to the Father;
laud and honour to the Son,
laud and honour to the Spirit,
ever Three, and ever One,
One in love, and One in splendour,
while unending ages run. Amen. - Видеоклипы
The Pope has invited the Abbey choir to sing at St Peter's Rome on St Peter's Day - the first time in 500 years that another choir has sung with the Sistine Chapel choir. Clearly he was very impressed!
Nothing beats Anglican Music in an Anglican Abbey, singing the Anglican tune of a man (Purcell) whose remains are buried metres away from the organ playing his music. It just doesn't get any better than this!!!
It's a Catholic Abbey stolen by a king whose remains and soul are elsewhere.
Catholic Abbey rubbish.
One day may my Anglican brethren by God's great mercy and grace bestow on you, and return you all to your catholic Home. ✝️🇮🇱🇨🇦🏴🙏⚔️💪😘
And ... As He has done to me. Grateful doesn't even begin to explain my thanks.
@@Xfranmanit’s not Catholic anymore.
As a Catholic,I love this hymn too
I love this version. It was sung at my ordination to the Priesthood 38 years ago, and I will have it sung at my funeral as well.
I'm a theistic Luciferian, but I absolutely understand your wish. So it is done.
The procession is magnificent
My favorite Pope. I miss him.
So do I he was a true Vicar of Christ.
And it has just been confirmed that this lovely hymn will be sung at His Majesty’s coronation on Saturday ❤
As an Anglican I'm delighted to see this. A great sign of friendship peace and reconciliation between two traditions.
Same here , from a Catholic .
Yes, let us pray for union in Christ
The Anglican community is always warmer to the Catholics than the other way round.
@@abrahamdecruz5128 True. Being an Anglican, all I get is arrogance from Catholics.
I remember regularly singing it as a child in my Roman Catholic parish church in Newcastle.
Watched this many times, beautiful music. Love the Holy Father’s beautiful smile on hearing the hymn. Love from a UK Catholic. Amen 🙏🙏🙏
I think that it is important to note, that in the Holy Fathers address at this same service, he stated " there is more that we share in common then what divides us."
Love the look on the Pope’s face when this starts . You can see delight on his face. Have heard he is a great music lover . This is great music!
I didn't know he loves music!
This pope has something endearing about him, something genuine and sincere, I mean as a person ...because I do not ... believe in popes, simply because the bible says nothing about them. 🌺
Rest in peace Pope Benedict. Thank you for visiting the UK and the Abbey. It was a joyous time. X
I do enjoy the pleasure on the Pope's face, as the music starts. He is obviously looking forward to the whole thing. Westminster Abbey knows how to turn on a performance really well!
Rather, I think he's thinking 'What am I, the Sovereign Pontiff, and Successor of Peter, doing in this Prot Shop?!"
@@andrewmiles3378 ,
The Abbey do things very well.
One of the nice little touches was that they brought out the banners, which you don't often see in procession like that, and the Pope was proceeded by the Banner of Saint Peter, who is also the saint to who the Abbey is dedicated.
But, in answer to what he was thinking..... it is complex .....
The complexities of that service are such that the Papal Legate was nearly rearing the remains of his hair out .... and Cardinal Pell was weeping tears of blood.
First they got him into the robing room, and it was made absolutely clear that while his priestly status was honoured at the Abbey, he was NOT regarded as a Bishop. The Bishop was Rowan Williams, and that was that.
Secondly, services at the Abbey are Christian and inclusive..... Now come and meet the people who are here to greet you..... the Catholic Bishops you have already met, of course, so here is the Bishop of the Church of Ireland and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Major General or whatever her title is of the Salvation Army, the Head of the Lutheran Church, (who took both his hands in hers and gave him a warm blessing, and here we have the Patriarchs of the Western European divisions of the Eastern and Western Orthodox Churches (which don't usually see eye to eye, but this is London), and the Pope has just shaken hands with all these lovely enthusiastic men and woman from Churches that have not been acknowledge by Rome since Constantine was a lad....!
And THEN he had to process, behind Dean John Hall, next to the magnificent Rowan Williams and with that large Canon with his splendid voice right behind him.
The Abbey had also prepared a nice little reading for him.
The sight of the Bishops and Cardinals faces was a study.
By the time the service was finished, the Pope had, either knowingly or unwittingly, acknowledged, not only that the Church of England exists, but that it is valid, that it has a right to exist, and like the Church of Rome, is an integral part of that One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church .....
So there you are!
Exactly what the full ramifications of this service at the Royal Peculiar are, I do not know.
Is anyone brave enough to write a Thesis on it?
We do know that despite all the good and wonderful, and very dangerous matters that Pope Benedict was prepared to delve into (the Vatican Bank clean-up, and the courageous instruction to put matters of sexual abuse into the hands of local legal authorities) ) ..... the acceptance of this invitation to Westminster Abbey was the most daring.
Possibly the most outrageous and daring thing that any Pope had done for 800 years, since Pope Innocent III recognised that what the world needed was humility, and kissed the feet of Francis of Assisi.
Oh well, after so much excitement, I suppose an early retirement seemed in order ..... or did it?
I heard this hymn during the wedding ceremony of Charles and Diana in 1981. It's a very regal song.
Absolutely gorgeous piece of music and never performed better than by an Anglican choir in the midst of a traditional service. Once heard it is unlikely to leave you.
Since the composer Henry Purcell was organist here at the Abbey and buried in the Abbey you would hope the Westminster Abbey choir would sing it well. Some people do say the strangest things.
The organist deserves a medal. His playing put the hair up on the back of my neck and brought tears to my eyes.
Purcell - One of the great composers and this is a splendid hymn.
Pretty amazing that it takes more than four minutes to process from one end of the church to the other!
I laughed out loud at about 1:47 where the sister drops a sheet and then kicks it aside without missing a step! Those Brits really know how to process!
Awww! The Pope Looks So Happy At The Beginning. :')
The organist is amazing
We usually are.
Love when you blast out the trumpets, trombone/pousane and bombarde stops.
This is glorious. Am proud to be a chorister in the Anglican Church. God bless this Pope for his humility.💖💖💖💖✝️✝️✝️✝️
Proud Methodist chorister over here✝️✝️✝️
Am proud to be a chorister in the Anglican communion
The good old times under Pope Benedict XVI. ... tears in my eyes ...
Beautiful hymn. I want to write music like this one day! Being a Pentecostal boy from North Carolina, I love the all the symbolism in Anglican and traditional services. There's something to be said for Crucifers caring the processional cross and candles.
-- Yes, bear the Cross high and forward and the lit candles to accompany it !
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
THIS IS WHAT THE WORSHIP OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST AND OUR ALMIGHTY FATHER IN HEAVEN IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!! WE MUST ALWAYS GIVE THE BEST THAT WE CAN GIVE!!! Although I grew up Lutheran, and am now Anglican, I long for the day that we may be truly One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church! As Our Lord said in His High Priestly Prayer, "May they all be one, as Thou and I Art One"!

In the Millenial Kingdom...we will be together......Pray for the Joker he will wake up in time!!
Samuel Manka; --- Amen ! Here in San Antonio, Texas, it is Holy Saturday as we await the Joyous Paschal celebration. God bless you and hear your and my prayers ! Peace and Joy!
Come home to the One True Church!
You’re one step from becoming a Catholic then. Study the Church Fathers and why the Anglican Church came to be. You’ll clearly see that the One Holy Catholic Church is indeed the one that is guided by the Successor of Peter. God bless you. 🙏🏻
You have stated so clearly what I passionately believe regarding Church music and worship! Thank you.
Cracking hymn, takes about 3 minutes for the choir to get in time with the organ because of the distance to travel to the choir.
From the hymn, to the choir, to the organist to the Pope and most especially the Director of music. i love and enjoy all. i am proud to be an Anglican
I’m not of either tradition currently but was raised Episcopalian(American form of Anglican). I love it. I’m a former evangelical pastor and as part of my ministry I taught the theological statements behind these hymns
This is the tune I'm familiar with! Thanks! These hymns go right to your soul!!
A wonderful staple of Anglican hymnody based on an ancient Latin text.
CHRIST IS INDEED OUR SURE FOUNDATION. AMEN
+Zsa Zsa Gabor amen.
I so agree. Why is the "amen" not sung? Who, or what, decreed that it should be so? Tamper with beloved traditions at your peril, senior clergy; we can vote at the collection plate.
I am grateful he still is alive and will pray for Her Majesty Elizabeth .
The pope never looked happier. He loves good music.
I've rarely seen his Holiness so happy and so rejoiceful
This is Westminster Abbey - England. Thank God Oliver Cromwell and the English Christians of the New Model Army stopped the damnable Catholics from ruining England as they have Italy, Spain, France, and Ireland. Because of the English Civil War, there is a still a trace of freedom in England.
@@flycatcherworld There is nothing "holy" about the Pope or the papacy. Anti-Christ is the fitting description of that brood of vipers.
@@DavidParker-cf2km shame shame on you. Not Christian at all. What will Christ say of your animosity. You don't condemn a religion, unless a cult or man made, on the fault of weak humans, yes humans, man, who defile it, Think about it. God forgive your blindness
@@harrycontois7762 You are quite correct, I do not condemn a "religion", God already did. Notice that John the Baptizer called the Jews a "brood of vipers". John passed judgment on Judaism with their damnable Talmud of traditions that made of no effect the law of God. Jesus called the Pharisees children of the devil. Jesus affirmed the Old Testament, creation, and all the prophets.
Since you seem to have missed it, Roman Catholicism is man-made, teaching salvation by meritorious works. Please do show we where purgatory, indulgences, limbo, prayers to Mary, prayers to designated saints, indulgences, etc., are found in the Bible. There was a reason for the Reformation and there was a very bloody reprisal by the papists for the next two hundred years against Christians. I have no doubt at all that if the Pope had the military power now that he did then, that war to kill every Christian would still be fought.
The essence of Christianity is salvation by the grace of God alone through faith in the effectual, finished work of Jesus' propitiatory sacrifice of Himself on the cross for God's elect and not of any meritorious work of man. Perhaps you never read Ephesians 2:8-9 or the rest of the Bible. Telling the truth, especially to hostile people who do not want to hear it, is also required of a Christian.
Incredibly beautiful, Pope Benedict 16th -- a guest of the Abbey, in 2010. I became a Roman Catholic shortly afterwards, after hearing the Holy Father Beatifying John Henry Newman in Birmingham. This was wonderful !!!
H should have beatified Alfred E. Newman too.
Jo Sparkes Beautiful
And now he is saint John Henry Newman, God is good
It gives me hope to see so many different Christian denominations represented. It's gradually moving towards a closer cooperation between us all - which is lovely. The clergy in Winchester cathedral have set aside a chapel in the cathedral for our local Roman Catholics to use. Now to work on drawing all the other faiths closer together as well.
Yes, I am in agreement, with the sentiments expressed.
One of my favorite hymns I learned as a child growing up in St Mary’s Anglican Church, Woodford, St Andrew.Jamaica and has made me into the old Anglican choir members of the church that I am a member of now, Christ Church Riverdale, Bronx Ny.
Christ is made the sure foundation because . . . . . .
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name;
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand!
The whole litany of Christianity is rolled into one with "Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation," your succinct addition, "Roll Away the Stone," (Tom Conry) and "He's Alive!"
J'aimais beaucoup ce Pape Benoît XVI
NOTHING compares to Our BEAUTIFUL anglican hymns. Written with such Love and Deep devotion To God🙏
Try GREGORIAN CHANT and Sacred Polyphony!
Love when the organist blasts out those powerful trumpets to introduce Christ Is Made The Firm Foundation.
As a man of goodwill he's probably thinking: "At last all Christians of goodwill are coming together. And right here in "my" abbey! What a blessing!" And - let me add - what a fantastic and much deserved tribute to a genious like Purcell.
Powerful lyrics and beautiful Melody
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him,
rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous-and all for your love's sake. Amen.
The Clergy can sing by Heart, appreciatable!!
I really like Purcell, and this is a wonderful hymn!
Gail, I agree with you. This is beautiful music. My mother was a church organist.
Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and cornerstone,

holy Zion's help for ever,
and her confidence alone.
To this temple, where we call thee,

Great hymn sung very nicely.Lets not argue about those things..Lets enjoy the fabulous hymn
Amen!
Tune by Purcell. How can it fail?
We love you and thank you for all your prayers Pope Benedict
One of my favorite hymn
I really love this tune It moves me whenever I listen to it. I wish we could use it for more hymns.
I'm non-denominational, but this song rings beauty in my ears
Benedict came to England to hear great hymns!
This pastoral visit belongs to the Story of the relationships between the two communities. The Pope undoubtely loved the great Music the Choir and the Liturgy too.
Building on that Foundation, new world in the morning ...
Wish the Methodist Church would use this version once in a while. I love it!
Yes, It would be difficult on tambourines !
I'm a Methodist and we had this wonderful hymn on Sunday.
For those who enjoy this, the event to welcome the Pope to Westminster Cathedral (the Roman Catholic Cathedral of London) begins in an equally spectacular manner, with glorious music.
Linda Missa Ecumênica Catolico-Anglicana!🙏🙏🙏
I am still drawn back to watch this , seven years down the track.
What an amazingly courageous man Pope Benedict is! His coming to the Abbey was an extraordinary act of Reconciliation, the ramifications of which do not ever seem to have been fully recognised or discussed. What we are seeing here is a Moment of History that could be the subject of a Doctoral Thesis.
What a beautiful and insightful comment.
Sadly, though, he seems to think Anglicans lack true priesthood and did not think the Sacraments could be shared. Not a huge reconciliation in my book.
Pope Benedit 16th and Johnpaul 2nd will go down in history as Great Popes.
@@michaelearendil6843 Anglicans do lack true priesthood. They broke off from the Church hundreds of years ago. Naturally, they are validly ordained - any of them.
@@thepianoman6958 And yet St Pope Paul VI, when visiting the Archbishop of Canterbury, gave him a crosier and a pectoral cross, and called the Church of England a Sister Church! So perhaps you are wrong. Also, don't forget the involvement of Old Catholic bishops in Anglican ordinations.
"The churche’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, The Lord"!
This is worship at its best.
This is a gift of God: to experience the sacred amidst the commonplace - to taste heaven in our daily bread, a new heaven and a new earth in a mouthful of water, joy in the ache of our muscle or the sweat of our brows.
How is Westminster commonplace?
Your words are a blessing to my soul.
03Blackbeard When compared with the glories and unspeakable beauty awaiting us in heaven, everything on earth is commonplace.
I am glad that the pope got to hear a wonderful singing congregation and a grand organ, something very often (but not always) missing in the Roman Church. This kind of music is duplicated in all sorts of churches, large and small, among Anglicans, Lutherans, and other Protestant denominations.
Beautiful. I miss Pope Benedict
this banner should be raise at all time with hymns and praise
A wonderful service breathtaking!❤
Judi Harbin, I have enjoyed all your comments in the many hymns you have commented on. May the love of God you have be shared with everybody be part of your daily devotion, and your verses from the bible are fantastic and great to read.

Perfection in making
If Henry was the most highly trained man for the job, then he is living proof that good training doesn't overcome bad character. Few names in the history of Christendom, are as stained with blood and heresy.

Here's the Latin version especially for our Roman buddies:
ANGULARIS FUNDAMENTUM
1. Angularis fundamentum
lapis Christus missus est,
qui parietum compage
in utroque nectitur,
quem Sion sancta suscepit,
in quo credens permanet.
2. Omnis illa Deo sacra
et dilecta civitas,
plena modulis in laude
et canore jubilo,
trinum Deum unicumque
cum fervore prædicat.
3. Hoc in templo, summe Deus,
exoratus adveni,
et clementi bonitate
precum vota suscipe;
largam benedictionem
hic infunde jugiter.
4. Hic promereantur omnes
petita acquirere
et adepta possidere
cum sanctis perenniter,
paradisum introire
translati in requiem.
5. Gloria et honor Deo
usquequaque altissimo,
una Patri Filioque
inclyto Paraclito,
Cui laus est et potestas
per æterna sæcula.

A chuckle - at 1:49 someone drops a sheet of music during the procession and without missing a beat, kicks it aside, out of the way
Mark Whittall and then 2 seconds later a singer on the aisle picks it up
There was one dropped just before didn't see anyone pick that up, the nun did that so well just a little kick, funny the women in grey the men all colourful we have a long way to go sign.
Haha, each of the pair of dear ladies side by side took their turn at dropping a sheet of music! Would have been funny to hear them poke at each other afterwards.
lol yeah saw the sister kick the programme sheet. Very smoothly done
Nuns know what to do!
Glad the Pope got a taste of some good English music.
The Vatican has rather horrid music compared to this. The RC Church jettisoned it's culture of sacred music at Vat II.
DE GUSTIBUS AUT BENE AUT NIHIL!
Would you rather have it all in Latin again?
That is a very general statement. Catholics actually invented Gregorian Chant which is one the most beautiful music in existence. Under the papacy of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI Tradition was upheld in a more visible way. You should hear all of Saint Peter’s Square singing the Salve Regina. Also though some may be bad singers at least we have sane Theology God bless you!!!
English Church music is beautiful. True.

When Michael Voris from Church Militant watches this, how can he say our Anglican Church is null and void - I can never and will never fathom that mindset.
John King A fancy show does not make valid rites.
@@rscottlogan9471 Why did Pope Benedict accept the invite to the service and participate in it?
I pray to Our Lord Jesus that one day the Anglican Church reverts to the One Holy Catholic Faith under the authority of the Successor of Peter to whom the Church was commended by Christ Himself. I am convert from protestantism and I thank God for revealing me the fullness of the One Faith and if His One Church. Blessed be God.
Benedict 16 ❤, Pope of Protestants. I was born and raised Baptist but he and John Paul 2 were my favs. Also Anglican liturgy, hymnody and psalmody are the best.
Paul says - "if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." Matthew 27 45-50 gives us Jesus' own last words on the Cross - "About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)."
