Great review Andy. If you get a chance track down the documentary behind the making of Nighthawks which centres on Ron Peck’s journey from isolated bullied gay adolescent in London in the early 60s to the relative peace he finds almost 30 years later. It’s called ‘Strip Jack Naked’ ( a little plodding and repetitive at times but very rewarding too)
@@AndyVillin oh hi and do so yes. Your video inspired me to look up Ron Peck who sadly died of cancer in November 2022. I have lasting admiration for that man because his, and people like him, are the shoulders we stand on in the easier world we live in today
I like it when people don’t get put off by older films. The trick to enjoying films from all eras for me is going in with a little bit of context from the time it was filmed that way I don’t focus on the difference in acting styles or dialogues that might sound funny today. Have you watched Maurice and A Beautiful Thing? Both British and two of my favorites. Also the camp of Pedro Almodóvar is not to be missed. All About my Mother is not as campy but as entertaining and beautiful as the two previous films I mentioned before.
I've watched both and even already reviewed Beautiful Thing! And yeah, I completely agree, although watching movies from different times has never been a problem for me, context does help :))
Great review. I also hated the repetitive club song. My guess is that they could not afford to use a real pop song so they had to make one/use a stock tune.
Fantastic review. I've just picked this up on the BFI DVD. This film deserves far more exposure.

I've been considering getting the double-feature blu-ray featuring both

@gerardmackay8909 Absolutely! Sorry to hear of his passing - I had no idea
I'd love to see this film in its entirety once again.
Tubi
It's a period piece, and a good example of independent British cinema, in the 1970s.

Oh for sure, I don't really fault them too much for that
