This channel takes a dive into the canon of queer cinema :p
As someone who since early childhood experienced a lot of the world through my love of film, of course, acceptance and exploration of my sexuality was no different.
I'd already been watching movie reviews from various channels for years, but it occurred to me that a similar channel just for gay movies was hard to find. Hell, most of the queer movies I considered watching had no videos discussing them period.
So, here I am attempting to make a comprehensive and (in time) semi-complete library of reviews for all the classics and underappreciated gems that queer cinema has to offer, in the hopes that someone like me will be able to find what I just didn't have back when I needed it most.
If you're watching along, then let's discover some great gay gems together and have a good time!

Interview with the Vampire Part 1 | LGBTQ Series Review
100% This movie was one of the first ones I watched back in the days and also one of the most impactful ones.
Somewhat unrelated to the topic, but It's so strange to hear someone describe the boarding school experience as something positive. To me, these 2 words (as well as "summer camp" and similar institutions) have always been synonyms to "hell on Earth" and "child abuse". I always saw boarding schools as some kind of sadistic punishment for kids whose parents hate them. It was one of my biggest fears as a teenager and even now as a 31-old guy I shudder whenever I hear those words. I absolutely can't imagine my life without my own home or at least my own personal room in my home. A place where there is no-one else, just me, a quiet personal space where I can return after school/work. And all the strangers (non-family-members) are out there, and we are separated by 2 steel doors. "My home is my fortress" as we say in my country. >speaks fluent English >"I'm bad in English" bruh 34:21 - that part was shocking. Anyway, whoa, that was one hell of a story. The longest but also one of the easist to watch of those I've ever watched.
Watched this movie days ago and oh man...this one is really hurting me. Im still recovering🤧😭
I've been recovering for years..😑🥺
I love this movie. I used to go to the midnight showings in the 1980s. It appealed to everyone at the time. We all yelled the audience parts that were created by the fans. Some people dressed up. I agree with you about the queer identity, but everyone loved this movie.
I love this movie! Its a thinly disguised Bowie biopic, basically Haynes did as much as he could get away with using allusions and metaphor. If you read Angie Bowie's book, you will see the the inferences even more. The actors did a great job with what they had. Ewan was a hybrid of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Mick Ronson(see the gold outfits and guitar string eating scenes). I read that Ewan, drunk, once met Iggy Pop and started jumping around and telling him what a fan he was and how he liked playing him. Ewan said Iggy just looked at him & walked away & he was so embarrassed.
Lmao nooo Ewan! That's a funny story tho
@AndyVillin He told the story in an interview. He said its when he was drinking alot. He no longer drinks. 😊
One thing I never hear brought up is how they manage to capture the horse reacting perfectly to Sara and badly to Felice. I don't know how they did it but it's just another example of the show's excellence.
August falls in love with Sara accidentally. He starts out using her to get try to get drugs, she in her direct spectrum way decides she wants to experience sex, he obliges and then falls for her.
I had exactly such an Emma in my life so I love this movie :)
Have you watched the original movie?
Sure have! Own it on Blu-ray
You have such a nice smooth voice omg
🤭
@@AndyVillin :D
Years later I'm still hurt when i rem the end of this movie.
Oh it was brutal
Thanks. Gorgeous movie. The scene where they're reading The Symposium looks like a Degas painting. As for the class issues, those are extremely deliberate. Forster usually included class critiques and obviously Clive denied himself to keep his position in society.
Great and interesting FILM. It doesn’t need a label
Nothing does, yet words and different lenses and ways through which we can interpret great art and communicate them to specific audiences are essential parts of our experience of this world. Glad you like this incredible film!
@@AndyVillin “specific audience” is where I have a bit of an issue. I feel it alienates everyone else. This is an incredible movie about the human experience as a whole rather than a specific group in my opinion. We both appreciate this masterpiece which I think is more important. We’ll agree to disagree on the labeling part. Watched it last year again. Hadn’t seen it since it came out. Was even better then second time 👍
Hey, to be fair, I think it's a very simple issue; My channel is all about queer cinema and therefore I'm going at the films with that angle. In no way am I trying to insinuate that this film's only value is that it features a gay character. That's simply what my channel and my viewers care about specifically. It's true that this film has many themes and relevant threads to pull on, and you loving it, no matter the reason (we all bring our own baggage and experience to films after all), well I celebrate that for you! :))
I agree with you on most of what you say. However, I still question that scene where Remi goes to the bathroom after fighting with Leo and his mother tells him that she doesn't like him to lock himself in there. Was Remi suffering from something and we as viewers didn't know about it? Did he commit suicide just because his friend abandoned him a little?
I absolutely love and am currently OBSESSED with NBC Hannibal so much!! It’s so artistic and beautiful in every episode, the soundtrack is perfect, the visuals are impeccable, and so much more I could talk about! This was an amazing review! :)
where to watch?
Where can I watch it
great video!!!!! thank you for making a video on this amazing film <333333
Didn't they say the person playing the trans guy is actually a real trans guy? Cus it is pretty annoying when they can't get an actual trans person to play the role. However something I have noticed on the RARE occasion they find someone who is actually a trans man... is they are before hormone therapy or very early on before the changes of testosterone have happened. This kind of gives the unaware public that all trans men are like this. I don't tell many people this because I prefer people do not know but I am a trans guy (on T for about 3 years now) and people just think I'm a cis guy. This is what testosterone does to a trans guy who takes hormones. This is something the public need to know. Us trans guys can feel very invisible to the world. I don't like telling people because people just don't get it. I only tell people who need to know. If I'm talking with other LGBT people I'll be comfortable saying it right away. But if it's people outside the LGBT community, I am a little scared to tell people due to traumatic experiences it can cause.
Just subscribed hope U make more videos soon
loved the way you talked about the movie. I wished you talked more about Maurice😢❤
The sex scenes were very unnecessary
It's a period piece, and a good example of independent British cinema, in the 1970s.
Fantastic review. I've just picked this up on the BFI DVD. This film deserves far more exposure.
fanfic is probably one of my fav movies. There are so few movies about transgender identity and this is the only one I know of that is about a gay trans man.The way that Tosiek escapes reality is so realistic. I love how the focus is more on feelings & emotions than on dialogue. Even though I agree with most of the criticism I think this movie makes a lot of pp especially teens feel understood.
And that's completely valid, and the fact that you love the film, I celebrate that for you!💛
I just know this movie just now and curious about it, but turned out it is as old as me😂 Can you tell me how long the movie is? Or where can I watch it?
Its runtime is roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. Where can you watch it, well it's hard to say depending on where you are in the world. I'm afraid you'll have to look it up. I bought the DVD online just to be sure
RUclips has it fully
It's on Pluto for free
This is such a beautiful movie one of the few best picture winners I agree with
I look forward to seeing this and agree about the actors
First to say 85 is gay
Considering it's about the romance and aftermath of two boys' relationship, I think it's fair to say it's gay, yeah Hahahah
Just watched the movie yesterday. The characters are gorgeous and very well portrayed. The movie could have been twice as long, there was no time I felt no joy, facing their doubts and insecurities, but also daring themselves to enjoy the young life. so wonderful, such an amazing and touching movie.
Remember the Fruit Loop dream sequence? Neil has a premonition/vision of his childhood past during sex at the motel room and that triggered him. He probably has a superpower when he was born without a notice. Like the Charmed Ones, he’s a Charmed One! 🔴🟠🟡🟢🔵🟣
I strongly suspect that the old man with his hatred and desire to murder is a worshiper of the presumably gay Jesus in the Bible... just like this Super Christian of charity: ruclips.net/video/L61723RQpb8/видео.html
Fab u Luna Ris tic
Fantastic movie even though i found it difficult to watch. Trying not to give too much away but if you've ever been betrayed by someone close, you'll relate to this. Brilliantly directed and fascinating story about how he choose the two actors and how he trusted them and gave them the freedom to find their characters. 10/10. Byo tissues.
Amazing story, thank you. I wish I'd had your emotional maturity, clarity, self awareness and confidence at your age. 😂
You're too kind🙈
Where can I watch this movie?
You'll have to google it, cause it really depends where in the world you live🫶🏼
@@AndyVillin Thank you... Yeah, I'm from India 🫶🏼
A Classic Film. Which dispels the myth being progressive began in last decade. 80s and 90s films many of them, were very inclusive exploring a number of universal themes.
Oh if only people knew!
BROO NO WAYYY I always thought this episode was an absolute masterpiece since I watched it last year and I always wondered why I never stumbled upon a video that talks about it (I mean the series is really underrated itself )until I finally did which is this video and you perfectly articulate my thoughts and I agree with you word by word . Also the fact that your fav gay movie is MOPI and fav show is Hannibal and you ALSO watched Beautiful thing and Breakfast on Pluto LIKEEEE YOU TOTALLY GET ME DUDE . I just became an instant fan .
Ahah I love your energy! And yeah, It's funny how alone I sometimes feel in my interest, yet after starting RUclips, I mean you really just realize how many people there are out there whom you'd totally vibe with ahah
@@AndyVillin IKR not having many people around who has the same interest as you can be lonely but I also find comfort knowing not many people I know loves a particular media piece / music that I love or understands it as much as I do , it makes me feel like I have a really unique / niche interest weather it actually that niche or not . BTW do you have letterboxd ? I'd love to follow you there !
I don't actually! Not much into written word when talking about movies
Getting drunk with your family…I can’t even fathom doing such a thing!
To me this is still Anthony mackies best performance. He’s wonderful.
I wonder if this film was the inspiration for the Franz Ferdinand song of the same name.
TRASH!
I adore this film, but it is about so much more than being trans. It was a human story, and the central theme was abandonment…in my opinion, anyway. It’s a great story and the acting was wonderful. I don’t agree that a trans actor should have played the role, I think Murphy was perfect, and that is why the film works. I didn’t mind the ending, though I kind of wish his mother had at least found out who he was.
Oh I'll never be one to claim that the story is even close to mainly about being trans. And yeah, the story is sooo good!
My favorite movie. Thank you
I'm sorry but I was distracted by your teeth,, please fix them.
I see no trauma in Neil. He was into older men with moustache since he was 8. To call this trauma is not a psychological assessment but a moral one. Brian, on the other hand, did experience it as traumatic. I think we should be more careful when using psychological terminology. Just because we don't understand how an 8yo boy can have such a sexual drive doesn't mean there's something pathological about it. It may just be illegal or immoral, but there's a big difference between the two.
@@AndyVillin Sure, paedophilia may be wrong by our moral standards, but that only makes it wrong from our cultural perspective. There's nothing pathological about it, just a socially unacceptable behaviour. I think that if Neil had repressed his sexuality as a child, he would have experienced it as a trauma. He doesn't because he is able to break the social rules.
@@juanjimenez62you terrify me 😐💀
Sir, stay away from children.
@@juanjimenez62Looks like we found the chomo yal. You better be lucky you don't get caught, cause inmates don't like people like you in prison.
Absolutly one of my favourite movies ever, I'll never stop recommending it to people (especially since pretty much everyone I mention it to has never heard of it). Gheorghe is the best, I love him sm and honestly all the characters are so beautiful, I love how they develop and just everything about this film is so beautiful
God I love this movie and the book is my favourite book of all time. I love both of them sm 😭❤
Haven't read the book yet!
THANK YOU for reviewing this movie, I wish more people talked about it. It's definitely a comfort film for me, can't even count how many times I've watched it
I definitely need to watch it again too - Get in that summer mood ahah
What I really like about this film watching in 2024 after 39 years of it's release.. It's realism. It takes you to the world and make you believe it. The authenticity, bold and brave commenting on class and racism without being apologetic about it and the most important how the writer Hanif Kureishi wrote his character without making them black or white.
One HUNDRED percent!
