  • Richie "Boogey" Martinez (10th Planet San Diego) is one of Eddie Bravo's top black belt competitors and Rubber Guard players. Boogey captured the CJJ Welterweight title at EBI 13 after defeating Bobby Emmons by D'arce choke.
    Shinya Aoki was the one who brought the Japanese Necktie to 10th Planet and is part of their system. Richie executed the Japanese Necktie in two of his MMA bouts and is one of his go-to moves. I've included a short highlight of this submission in the first half of the video.
    The second half of the video includes the Japanese Necktie strangle breakdown. This submission is essentially a D'arce variation without figure four locking the arms and it is a very strong choke/neck crank.

    Love the Japanese necktie, I find it easier to get and to finish than a darce or anaconda, it feels less about bicep strength and more about using the bone of your forearm to grind the head into position. Prob the most uncomfortable of those submissions.

      Need long arms for Darce and Anaconda, or an opponent with narrow shoulders. I love the Darce and conda. There's a few guys I've rolled with with really broad shoulders and the Japanese necktie is a great fallback for them.

      @quiettimegaming3642 4 года назад

      Because BJJ won’t stop you from getting knocked out against some of the better anti-bjj and anti-wrestle fighters.
      Combat Jujitsu and jujitsu in general forces opponents into defensive/offensive positions, and it’s really about who can win that battle. It’s like Greco Roman wrestling in that regard.
      But MMA forces you to stand, and unless you have great (like elite level) wrestling takedowns, there’s no guarantee of the fight ever touching the mat... meaning he’d be without his greatest weapon.
      And in MMA you can’t be single-faceted no matter what discipline you study.

    • @BJJTrickster
      @BJJTrickster  4 года назад +11

      The Gable Grip doesn't change at all but it's important to keep everything tight and elbows pitching inwards. Most importantly, the back of your partner's head is right against your stomach. It may be awkward at first when drilling this (could be why you feel like it's breaking your own grip), but trust me, it's much worse for your partner. I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

      BJJ Trickster thanks for the response! 100% know this technique is effective, I’ve hit it a couple of times in training.

    • @soerenna
      @soerenna 4 года назад +2

      Whenever you go for the japanese necktie and have trouble establishing or maitaining the gable grip, you can opt to switch to a three finger grip (by placing the thumb of your bottom hand in between the index- and middle finger of your top hand), this will increase your mobility albeit slightly sacrificing some stability. :)

      If the opponent pops their head out from under the top leg and you lose the position (which definitely happens semi-frequently), you end up on bottom in a game that allows punches and elbows. I love how much the Japanese necktie lends itself to a smothering takedown ability... it seems almost tailor made to be easy to sink into from almost any control position and once that forearm sinks, the defender is in terrible position to escape

    It's crazy I came up breakdancing in socal. We use to battle boogeyman and his krew all the time in bboy competitions. I'm glad he got into grappling. Back then all we did was stretch and stretch and stretch more so that we can hit alot of our breakdancing moves and poses. I remember doing yoga and doing splits all the time. Bboy for life.

    His skills and flexibility are first rate. Amazing submissions. But, when you have to tape up your ears so your opponent doesn't run a finger through them that should make you question your life choice of putting grommets in them.

    Sakuraba is a legend not only because of his past victories, but because he keeps fighting and grappling to this day without worrying about "ruining" his reputation. Unlike some lol. Sleezy move to use him as a highlight reel. But whatever works for you
