Eyestalk ablation is a common practice in shrimp breeding, where one or both eyestalks are surgically removed from the shrimp to induce reproductive activity. This is because the eyestalks contain the neurosecretory cells responsible for the production of hormones that regulate molting and reproductive processes in shrimp.
By removing one or both eyestalks, the shrimp's hormone production is disrupted, which triggers the development of mature eggs in females and the production of spermatophores in males. This technique can be used to induce spawning out of season or to increase the number of spawns in a breeding season.

Neat. Sounds like it could be related to seasonal changes and/or day and night cycles in the wild then.

Great explanation, very interesting, weird mechanisms from the arthropoda world as the ones used to induce queen rearing in bees.

Well that was a strange way to end it. I was waiting for them to go on and show baby shrimps hatching or something like that.

Would be great if you could do an expose of the Vietnamese shrimp farming too, are they as bad as Thai farmers?

Oh my, I was captivated up until the end? Where you up against a deadline and just couldn't properly wrap things up? Perhaps discuss how removing the eyes prevents fighting and cannibalism. Not sure which is worse...

Are they so still because their eyes are removed?!

even though they must have big reason to do it, but it just savage, geez even those are farmed food source, cant they at least have short good life? i am guessing those shrimp get into package after done laying eggs, so for those farmer it not make much different?

It seems like a pretty cruel process just to 'speed things up'. Is there a better alternative? And how do we know if we're buying prawns that have been bread this way - I'm assuming it's not spelt out on the packaging? When it comes to sea-caught prawns, is that worse because of fishing techniques like dredging? Sorry, these are prob quite hard questions to answer.

With peace and love, did the host have the worst case of “bed head” ever? British hair not coping with tropical conditions? I love her, she is so beautiful and talented. 1:05

Is there a problem with the sound in the video? It's sounds pitched up and shakey on my phone. I checked another video and it sounds normal.
