I love how framing the intervention as a plea for help with a problem reinforces the idea that the patient is helpful, can make a positive difference in their home and for their caregivers, and has meaningful purpose. So many activities for the elderly don’t reinforce their value. I appreciate this does.
I wish I’d known this! That being said she was insistent on an afternoon nap. She’d wake sundowning. Of course, in her last year’s, it was tough for her to sleep at any regular sort of times but her struggle to get a nap in often led into the sundowning. Thanks for all the great tips. I will still watch your channel because I’m sure I will encounter others going through these things.
I understand that it’s best not to argue or correct the person with dementia. That’s a “little white lie.” But what if the patient’s notions are false and hurtful to them/their relationship with a family member. Like a wife saying of her husband, “He has a girlfriend” when there is no way he does. It would be wrong to agree with a falsehood that’s so toxic.
Intensified dementia as the day progresses/as the sun goes down. For some, this could mean increased agitation, paranoia, or hallucinations. For others, it could be increased forgetfulness or loss of time awareness.
