Should You Lie To A Dementia Patient?

Should You Lie To A Dementia Patient?
THANK YOU!!!
What if they're not seeing things but hearing voices?
I told the nursing home I worked at this the RN told me it didn't matter (What I heard just let them shrink away)
When my dad was in the worst of his dementia before he passed, sometimes I’d make it about me instead of him. “Dad I have to go to the doctor, will you go with me? I’m scared 🥺” and he went right into parent mode. By the time we got there he had already forgotten where we were going and I could just gently direct him to follow doctors instructions, while getting him to make conversation with the staff- a social butterfly through and through 😂
Is there a way to do this without blatantly lying?
It depends on the person and the situation. Most people with dementia are at a point where the lying is preferable than the emotional distress they go through otherwise
I have a very stubborn wife with autism. I don’t lie to her when she gets fussy like this, I just tell her she has to or XYZ. Then if I can’t reason with her, I let it go for awhile. Approach later when she has had time to calm down! I will remind her of things she has said when she was in a more clear state, like, “but you said it might help you to talk to a therapist?” And she will fuss some more but usually think on it. Make it seem like it’s their idea. Give a reason, but tell them it’s up to them, but you already talked about why 🤷🏻♀️ I dunno, it’s sort of situational. The lie can sometimes spare both people the back and forth and since stress is bad for most medical and mental health issues, it seems like your own moral compass is getting in the way of you doing your best care. Lying is bad, but sometimes the truth, for truth’s sake, is just to comfort the person talking. Food for thought
Does this make anyone elses heart break thinking about the number of people who endured prior to such discoveries?
This is good to know
John Denver? 🖼
Huh, didn't even think about that. Good to know, just hoping I will never ever have to make use of that trick.

I appreciate your page. My grandma has dementia and I'm moving in w her to help... I'm learning as I go. Your page is a saving grace ❤️
Thank you for this page!!!!
Thank you for these great tips!❤
Great idea!
I work as a care aide in an assisted living facility, but I used to work in long term care. I'd heard about this to get people with dementia to eat well and mentioned it to others, but they didn't try it out. A family member had overheard me talk about this and brought in some coloured dishes and cups for their family member, and her eating improved big time.
If it were only that simple. She wouldn't go to a neurologist if she got a million dollars for it.
Being a wife of a husband w EOAD, It’s pointless to do an MRI!! Maybe see a geripsych MD for medication management at best. 12 years of this awful disease. Death can’t come quick enough.
Even the life of someone with dementia is precious. They're humans made in God's Image and likeness just like the rest of us. You seem really burnt out. Are you able to access any respite care?
Unfortunately my uncle can't smell very well, or so he says. (He's unable to smell urine at all.) But he's usually willing to take a couple showers a week so I'm lucky. I love that you ask them to help you instead of just giving orders. I need to learn this.❤
I love this hack! I also found actual "bath wipes" that are a bit larger and more wet, but not much more expensive. Some people don't like how large they are, but some do.
Great ideas everyone ❤
They gonna hate my ass with my chronic uti
They could have a UTI, they could have had extra liquid, meds or even just having poor bladder training. Younger people, especially women post UTI, can accidentally retrain their bodies to need to pee each time the bladder feels any fullness. Bladder training is a thing for the elderly, and mostly usued after med changes or UTIs
Excellent advice! Issues like this is where we were trapped with my MIL. She had dementia (more typical for older individuals), but my husband also has dementia due to brain injury... My husband always approached things in the first manner (no matter what it was - as if she was a teen punk), and I had to consult these types of videos to figure out how to handle BOTH of them at the same time. Hospice care nurses were a godsend but so are any sort of support or educational videos like these. ❤ much love and thank you
Yeah, I'm not even adjacent to the medical field in the first thing I thought was UTI
Taking care of my mum since 2017...she is 80 years old now and it is getting worse day by day...she cries every day, especially in the afternoons ...I have tried so many things, it seems like I just can't " get to her " at all. It so disappointing. Sleeping at night id also so very difficult for mum ( and obviously me as well). I feel like i am useless, it breaks my heart that I can not help her at all.
The #1 thing i learned working in LTC was all about the UTI spiral! When the elderly get incontinent or have trouble ambulating to the bathroom, they start drinking less fluids, to decrease incidents. Then they get dehydrated, amd get a UTI. The UTI symptoms frequently present as confusion and agitation...which in a dementia patient, can be everyday issues. Getting the UTI recognized and treated in this population is way more challenging than you'd expect!
It’s hard to think on a spot on how to redirect people when usually your go to “sayings” works most of the time but this… I felt like dirt and stupid for following this resident for an hour and a half, trying to stop her from going outside and being behind on my rounds, when one of my coworkers came and in 10 secs the resident was in their room and asleep.
Very insightful video! My grandfather showed early signs of Alzheimer’s, and we included Planet Ayurveda's Brahmi and Ashwagandha capsules in his routine. It helped with his focus and memory. These herbal supplements are a blessing for cognitive health.
I ordered a Baby Wipes Warmer to make those chilly wipes a bit more comfortable.
❤Glad to see more helpful tips! 🎉
I hope this works
It does but not for everyone. You just have to experiment. If you're taking care of someone who has Alzheimer's and or dementia I suggest a support group as well as this page. There's support groups in person and online just a quick Google search will help you with options.
I wish this would work for me. The struggle is real. 😢
Yep I bought / wore some depends to show her they are "normal" attire and was able to get her on board with wearing them. It's a daily challenge but with love & kindness it works for now.
I really love these .
Brilliant! Sometimes, I would tell my mom that she had a doctor's appointment, even if it wasn't that day. She would always shower if she was going to the doctor.
My husband gets aggressive towards me ! I l let to go and try again! Battle
😢
Thank you so much for these videos. We need more!
Using a bidet has helped prevent UTIs. 😊
But it gives me heartburn!
Water/hydration: Try electrolyte popsicles, watered down beverages, flavored water, watermelon slushy. Bottled water with fancy straw - tap water in many areas is not tasty.
@ oooooo, never thought of those options before, thank you! And you are correct, tap water is icky.
@@ruthsmithwade7955might also try Bubly or LaCroix. I love Aura Bora Lavender, cucumber They're fizzy water without sweeteners or sugars. I drink lots of them. Also herbal tea (teapigs) as long as there's no caffeine you're getting your water. I'm just not into flavored sugar free products.
SOMETIMES LESS IS BETTER ❤
Are you reading?
Thsnks.
Every doctor we talk to -- PC, UC, ER, Urology -- they all say they won't administer antibiotics so they don't become ineffective -- samples always contaminated -- but the behavior indicates UTI!!!!! Ugh.
Vigilance to keep a loved one from wandering is important. And, when my husband asked for help with operating the microwave, which he used to be able to do~ made me afraid that he might set it for 3 hours instead of 30 seconds for his coffee...and cause a fire. That and the wandering caused me to find assisted living for him.
This is great ❤
Some people just have a small bladder
All great advice❤👍
So much this! My late grandmother (who had dementia) had UTIs that messed with her medication… Alleviating the UTIs was crucial! Knowing that helped me alert my husband to his mom’s (not dementia) sudden behavior changes…she got immediately better once that was addressed.
Ok and if it is a no for all of those how do you stop them from going 15 times a night?
Great idea🎉❤
