Started getting these recommended to me after watching a bunch of videos from that lady who talks about being a foster parent. It's so nice seeing the gentleness that folks like yall show those who are struggling with things very beyond their control. Being a neurodivergent child in foster care doesn't sound too far off from being a senior with dementia in a care home.

As I caregive foemr Lewy Body Dementia are 2) if he sleeps too long he is antagonistic, & 2) hallucinations. Thinks his mom is here and alive (he's 93), or another woman is here.

My gramma forgot our names pretty frequently, eventually forgot how we were related- but when asked she always said ' I don't remember, but I know I love you' and that made me somewhat comforted

My friend did something similar with her mother in law but actually the way she worded it didn't even lie! Her MIL said she needed to go home, when asked why she said "The kids are coming home from school I need to meet the bus". My friend answered "Oh remember you already took care of that and arranged someone to take care of them after school" Truth is she did, 50 years ago she had taken care of it and she was the one arranged to care for them after school! Of course they didn't say that last part. Just being told she arranged it calmed her down.

To everyone suggesting an automatic feeder: As someone else said it depends on the situation. An automatic feeder only helps if they feed the animal dry kibble. AND that is only during mealtimes, it won’t help the many snacks that may be given throughout the day. It doesn’t work if they like giving the pet food meant for human consumption. I caught my grandma trying to cook bacon for the dog at 1am. Everything we try to give her to eat goes (in part) to the dog. Automatic feeder would not help in this case. It’s tough because feeding pets is the one thing they feel like they have control over with the added reinforcement of the social interaction.

With a minor stroke, sometimes the patient will not be able to see a part of their plate. Spin it a bit if they’re only eating off a side of it.

My Dad would savagely remind my Mom that her kids and pets were dead during her medicine induced dementia moments. She'd completely dissolve and he'd tell her to get over it. Sometimes it had only been a year or two. The guy is a monster through and through. Never break their hearts like that. Ease them in slowly.

Back in the early '80's I cared for a dementia patient in her home and when she did this we'd put on jackets and go out the front door and in the back. She was always glad to get home.

This would have been so helpful when I was the full time caregiver for my mother. I experienced ALL of these scenarios. I still grieve losing her so brutally-she was physically strong so she went through the entire horrible process. Keep doing these videos! They’re sure to help so many people better understand this disease and to help their loved one with more patience, awareness and compassion.

Question, can you do a video on what to do when your person can no longer tell hot from cold and won't eat their food because it's cold? Even if they can see the steam coming off of it, they still say, it's you know, ice cold because they can't tell the difference, i'm really at a loss as to how to handle that one.
