- Hi, guys! In this episode, we are hauling our halibut sets for the day. The sets start out slow, catching a lot of sharks but later on, our patience pays off.

GREAT! Another episode from some great and awesome family! Love this team! Stay safe and God bless you all!
Love watching you guys work. I visited my brother when he was stationed in Anchorage, was supposed to stay for a week. I ended up staying for 2 months, until my sister in law finally kicked me out!
Wish I had never left.
I enjoy how well you both work together and the efficiency of it. Fun watching.
Initially was singing Mack The Knife! Glad you guys were able to get around the dogfish and catch some nice fish. God Bless.
Great job as usual where the captain puts you on the fish! Too bad you don’t ship to England, they love "dogfish" for their fish and chips!
Another awesome video, thanks for sharing.
No we don't
Andy Wright that's how Arther Treachers made a living!
Can't believe there's not a market for all those sharks you catch.... there's not a fish & chip shop in Australia that doesn't sell it..
I guess perhaps you don't have many fish & chip shops?...
Have you tried using them for bait?...
Yeah, it's a shame, when you get in 'em, you're in 'em.
From sharks to success or how to create the winning string! Maybe that is a book title for one of your future adventures. Stay Safe and Be Healthy! -Bob...
WOW> That was a shark concert and they all attended from near and far. But things definitely got a lot better, thank God. Matt is a machine on cleaning those Halibut.
Matt the Knife! 🤣😂
I live in the uk and im a commercial hook and line fisherman i would so love to come over there with you guys for a week and do this.
Why no market for dogs? It is English original fish n chips. Soak in milk after skinning neutralize uratic acid. Deep fry tastes just like tom cod. Thats what they serve in England original fish n chips.Try a different buyer or ask around. Gotta be a market .Just throwing them back will make more of them. Duh! Ha Ha Good Luck Chuck!
I love your channel ,but please buy some wireless mics. I am hard of hearing so i need all the help i can get. You guys have the nicest family . and i want to move in..LOL
Gotcha, Kevin, thanks for the feedback!
I'd rather see empty hooks than sharks and I hate empty hooks lol.
Nice teamwork. Its like the sharks are your 5 second "break" between halibut! Is there a shark season up there? I know that they LOVE smoked dogfish in certain parts of the world.
Hello from France ... what are these little sharks that you reject? .......
Hi! They are spiny dogfish.
Have you ever tried eating any of those sharks? I've eaten plenty of shark and some are really good.
Nah, we prefer cod. The meat looks like it would be pretty tasty though.
I wanna like come to you guys fishing one day with you
so is it illegal to cut the sharks throat & toss them back, is there a fisheries boat watching? can they be used as fertilizer?
Bycatch needs to returned to the sea with a minimum of damage and harm. They annoy us, but they are also part of the environment and deserve the same respect as other creatures.
LOVE THE POSITIVITY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very good lots of fish and big. Always success your team 👍👍
Hasil tangkapan yang luar biasa kawan..
Salam saya dari indonesia 🇮🇩
Watching you two is like watching a well oiled machine, keep the vids coming and I love the way you check the halibut to make sure they are legal. Question: what is the legal size/length for a person fishing off a boat with a rod and line 👍
I don't think your missing ANY of those lil doggies! Use your electronics and avoid the herring balls. Doggos follow them.
To bad that dogfish can't be rendered for their oils as was done during WW2. Was a win, win back then to preserve petroleum for various fuels and to gain fine machinery oils from surplus and largely unused fish specie. Would like to see the buy-catch dollars go into your pockets rather than thrown away as they are costing you money.
Nice👍👍 can you show how to gut a halibut? A very close look.
I'll do that next season. We have showed it in the past but can't recall which video.
Nice haul❣️
Can’t wait to get some
I'm at 9 minutes into this and hot damn! Does this look fun or what. Firetrucking fantastic!!!!!
They started eating the dog fish in Massachusetts.. actually delicious! Ive thrown a million back. They had to try something , they multiplied cause of so much by-catch..you should look into it, turn a bad day into a good one.all around!
Hang on let me refill my coffee and settle into my easy chair and enjoy my favourite You Tube Family ❤️🇨🇦
You say you are not rod and reel fisherman well yes you are you just have a dang big reel---nice Halibut
Well at least they weren't sleeper sharks..but not much you can do when a large group of sand sharks passes thru .
That's for sure! The sleepers are the worst. Hard to handle when they get rolled up in the gear.
When comercial trollting salmon and run into a bunch af these sharks i cut one up the belly and throw it back into the water and within minutes all skarks disapear.
The only real way to deal with the dogfish problem is to have a domestic market for them then they will be harvested
Esos tiburones pequeños se limpian se abren y se secan al sol y estan muy buenos secos a la brasa
It must feel like you're suddenly EIS Shark Feeding Alaska >_
Great day of fishing nice average👍!! I'm happy for you. Thank you for the video!!
I feel your pain with the spiny dogfish. I used to fish commercial deep water rockfish in California and we occasionally get invaded by those as well!
That looks like a Dexter Russel knife. What model is that as I'm sure the profile has changed a bit due to use and sharpening. Great knives and hold an edge very well. Just wish they offered them with a sheath. It looks like the Fish Splitter but I only see that in 12" which yours appears shorter
Edit: I see it now as it's one of their butcher knives is that 6 or 8
Yep. Dexter 8" SantiSafe. They are great knives.
Catching fish is great, catching big beautiful fish is a whole different feeling. You can tell by the smiles on their faces 👍👍!
EIS well oiled machine! Keep fishing guys and stay safe! Thanks for the awesome episode!
Pretty work I am coming thus summer to fish for them and salmon
Just can't seem to find halibut in fish shops these days, which is great shame, but i used to like 'flooks' when i netted them from the boat in Poole harbour ( used a 1 fathom drop trammel net ) which i set on high water, then went off on the falling tide to pick cockles. Those were good days.
You guys are great longliners and make some quality catches. Tight lines and smooth seas.
Cheers Collie, thanks for tuning in.
You make this look so easy....I'll bet after the end of the day a hot shower, hot meal, some ibuprofen, and bed are really welcome....
Nailed it Dave!
Nice haul after all those sharks I take it your quota goes by dressed weight. It's easier estimating weight by length on the halibut than other fish using the chart. Rounder fish are harder due to girth being so different between fish
The IFQ balance goes by head off gutted. This year the fish seemed to be running heavier than the chart showed, they did seem to be pretty healthy looking fish.
AS USUAL YOUR WORK 💪ETHICS IS TO BE ADMIRED. YOUR FATHER MUST BE SO PROUD OF YOU. I AM.
That looked like fun, I remember those days long-lining when I was a kid. You guys got a great set up and you’re team work is real smooth. It’s a pleasure to watch.
Cheers
Roger
Really enjoyed that fellas - thanks Len and Matt ... good job. Definitely some fatties there - bet they taste extremely yummy. Thanks for the vid - could watch for hours ... you guys are one well oiled machine. As bad as it might sound to you two, I found that quite relaxing, when I already know that was somewhat intense for a while. Thanks again - Sydney, Australia saluting you!
Glad you enjoyed it, Steve! It's quite exhilarating when they come on like that! Gets the blood plumping for sure.
Matt is your favorite song by any chance"Get rythm" by Johnny Cash. 😆 Cause you got rythm.
Lol!
quiet a shark day but a great haul, long days short nights Keep safe.
When you guys start dropping the long line do you mark on your electronics where you started so if you have a good run you can go back and set in the same area?
We do and we also put a mark every 100 fathoms (600 feet) or so and note the depth. When we are pulling gear, we can pop inside and see where we are and on our string to get a better idea of where to set next. Having the set marked makes it easier find the gear when it gets nasty out.
You guys have got that great Alaskan work ethic. I really enjoy this channel!
Just out of curiosity, what was the cost of the bait, that was put out on this longline? If you'd rather not say, just don't comment. Enjoy every episode!
The pollock usually runs around $.80-1.00/lb. Not sure exactly, I'll have to check. Thanks for tuning in, glad you're liking the content!
Seems it was worth a few dogs.
Hey quick line 2 let yous know that I enjoy your shows and how is Emerald doing along?
Thanks Phil. Glad you enjoy the content. Emerald Isle is coming along. Lots of fun grinding and laminating. Hoping to start wrapping things up in the net month or so.
hit the trick and the fish is too big
What are those snake lookin things
It's a sea pen. They grow off the bottom like tall grass.
Yay a nice long video 😉👍
NICE 🦢
Started singing the Baby Shark song again. It’s gonna be hours before it’s out of my head 😜
Haha. I'm resisting the urge to google it. Enjoy!
@@EISAlaska DONT DO IT!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!!
Good to see you men who go down to the sea for a living...
Can't believe how much they move after you pull all there guts out. I've seen first hand with sharks but halibut...
How old would you estimate those large halibut?
Love the two videos of watching the set … and then seeing what’s in the hall
You guys do all the hard work and we enjoy seeing what you caught ☺️👍🏽
Our pleasure, Scott! This was a good trip!
@@EISAlaska 👍🏽😊
How about dropping down with the jigging equiptment baited up in new areas before putting out the long lines to detect shark-infested bottom water?
It'd be pretty tough to gauge that way, since the fishing can change at any moment, one second you're in trash the next you're hauling on lunkers. That's where laying longline really shines, it covers a large area of bottom and depth range.
@@EISAlaska That makes sense because you have the gear down there a long time after the sampling time. But you might want to give it a try when the sand shark density is so grim. And I guess that because you have a smallish quota for the under 35" boat class halibut permit you can afford some bad sets because you are probably going to hit that quota regardless.
It was cool that you got the lunker halibut on the high spot. I enjoyed that strategy for sure.
Also I learned that "sand fleas" are Amphicods (sand crablike Crustaceans). It's tough to have to deal with these issues (sand sharks and amphicods). You guys work hard for what you get.
nice! i wish the halibut were like that here in wa state. currently me and brother fish in the straits of juan de fuca . but over the last couple seasons the halibut were just not here . hopefully its just a cycle and they come in the straits this next year. good work as always fellas!
We've had that before, good areas some seasons will be deserts the next. Gotta wonder where the fish go in that time. Good fishing to you!
@@EISAlaska yea, well we start our season around march, but the fish seem to be coming in late, like around end of march into mid April the past few seasons. halibut are definitely hard to figure out! but up there in Alaska that's like their breeding grounds isn't it?
What's the most heaviest and legal halibut you guys have ever caught?
Right around #150. This one we had in this video was close!
I believe " chunky " was a bit of an understatement .
True, there were some slabs that day!
Is there time after the gear is in the water to drift bait on your fishing lines. It might be interesting to see what you could do drifting a hot spot and fighting some of those giants in
Not much time to do anything this late in the season, we had about an hour or so to chill and grab a bite before we started hauling.
Nice halibut there wow! 👀👍🎉
Nice catch men!
Whats the biggest halibut you've had on the longline?
Thanks andy 😉👍
I think the biggest was right around #150.
@@EISAlaska that's a big unit
How long have you guys been doing this? Your teamwork and routine is inspiring!
We've owned the Fish Tale for 21 years now. We've got it down for sure! Thanks, Cathy!
sharks, catch and release practice!
Beautiful fish. Question, what is that long skinny stick looking creature?
Thanks Vivian. I believe it is an orange sea pen, or a close relative. Neat little creatures. Here is a Wiki link. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptilosarcus_gurneyi
Thank you my grandson is going to love this.
That was a great one!! Sharks, birds and halibut...and great scenery.... don't get much better.
Thanks 👍
The birds know what is coming
Those sharks are a damn nuisance! Too bad you can't sell them for garden fertilizer or something !!
But aren't they the cutest little things with their pretty green eyes. ;)
@@EISAlaska Lol..yes they are...and they would no doubt make pretty flowers and veggies grow too!! ;)
@@EISAlaska On another note every time I see you you pull out a yellow eye I have to wonder are those the goldfish that got flushed after the little kids set them free.... Is that where they end up? Lol I won a goldfish at a county fair when I was a little girl and I kept putting it in a bigger bowl and a bigger bowl and it kept getting bigger and before it died it spirit died it was 12" long! I know they're not the same thing but it still makes me think of my little goldfish When I see the yellow eye
I miss going fishing; I am so sad. I could watch for hours and hours!
Hope you can go again someday!
Nice to see you catching cash. Thank you for your video.
Holy French fries that was awesome. Nice touch with the orange fish in the picture for size comparison and a dash of color. Stay safe and keep up the awesome work and content.
Glad you enjoyed it Dan. The orange is a yelloweye rockfish. Fabulous eating!
Not "consumable" or not marketable? ...
No market. I know they are popular in the UK.
Hey guys a couple questions, When are you gonna have rockfish? When are you gonna have the new shipper lined out?
Hi Kenny. We probably won't have rockfish until next January. I have you on the wait list if we get out sooner. Hoping to have everything setup with UPS soon.
How long have you guys been doing this? Your teamwork and routine is inspiring!
awesome haul guys. that table you clean the fish on why dont you just cut a hole in it for all the junk and water to dump out to the ocean?
You guys killed it. Good Job!
Nice half ton haul 👍👍👍👍
Matt I love you all, but you and your dad are unbeatable. I have seldom seen a young man so responsible taking care of the boat that supports you all. You are fastidious and my wife and I both smile as we watch you care for her. Here is some rare advice Matt, I seldom give it. Never let a woman know just how adaptive you are in a kitchen...ever! Make them think you are a total disaster or your life will be very ....... Different.
I do laundry, cook and do dishes, don't let it happen! Ahhhh who am I kidding! If course it will happen one day, maybe fifty years from now? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I see now what's shaking with the bait and hook setups. Feel kinda silly, but I don't actually give a $£it now anymore. This is fantastic and I've shared it with all my fishing buddies.
You guys got a sign I could hang on your behalf? Bigger the better.
Bringing on the meat!!!
lots of sharks, can they be used as bait?
They'd ruin any knife in short order !
that was a real good hall
Do you set lines to soak overnight?
Nope, not often. We did one set on the west side trip which we soaked overnight. Just depends where you are and how much time you have.
Oi amico m.alo
Lots of shark, shakers and a wonderful catch. Always like to watch you fish. Looking forward to eating more of your catch. Many Thanks!
Thank you, Douglas! We sure appreciate your support!
I would love to hear an explanation on the difference between slush packing fish and just using ice. Especially when and why you use each method. Love watching you guys fish a mind fix up the new boat
Slush ice is just adding seawater to the ice to create a slurry. It helps chill the fish faster and mo evenly than ice alone. It also prevents crushing on the bottom layer as it floats the fish and they arn't packed as tight.
@@EISAlaska good info. Would it be bad to gut and clean a fish before putting them into slush ice or should you minimize contact with the meat and water?
A lot of sharks
Awesome guys best way too catch fish better eating well done 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I like to watch your video catching fish 🐟🐠 May God Bless Your Guy
I see you get swarmed by dog fish as bad as we do in the gulf of Maine ! They get really thick in July and August !
Could you keep some of the sharks for bait? And, when you retrieve the hook and it still has the bait on it why not use it rather than throw it back into the sea?
Wow! Jackpot!
do you keep a log of where and how you did at certain spots on a daily basis
Yep, we keep a log book. Not only fishing spots but also length of set, hooks per set, hook type etc. number of fight caught, and soak time are recorded in logbooks for IPHC to review later.
Where is T
