I have a 2017. Just last month had to drive 800 miles and got 23.5 mpg on the trip. Might be because it's got the 10 speed transmission. I do love the engine breaking In tow mode. Don't think I will ever figure out the trailer backup knob. Great review.

I never cared about cooled seats but we got my wife a new cherokee trailhawk elite and they were a part of the package. Now that I have them I love them. They're so nice when its 90 out.
I will never own another vehicle without cooled seats. I'd rather have that over heated seats. I never use the heat function. I keep the cooled seats on almost all year long -- even when it is cold outside. My back and behind always sweat with leather seats.

Just food for thought, but they are more expensive. But if you will ever want to tow something more than 5,000 lbs you might consider it. Otherwise 5k is a piece of cake for the F150. Thanks

2.7 here in a lowly STX Crew 4wd, quiet quick comfortable and easier on gas than my old V6 Tacoma was by about 2mpg in town. Mine an old 2017 engine and I couldn’t be happier with the truck!
Great review, I have the 3.5’s baby brother, love it, I can squeak out 23 highway, but only under perfect conditions, flat ground and no over 70 mph. In town 20.4 if I stay out of the boost, also 3.55 rearend and 6 speed. I call mine a gentleman’s truck, don’t really work it, but I’m old and not to many years away from the grave and I like driving a nice full size truck after years of S10’s and Tacoma’s.

I bought the first year ecoboost F150 in 2011. Never looked back. Absolutely love it. Super crew 4x4 3:73 22-25 mpg highway unloaded and driving the speed limit , tow 10-11k lbs easily, occasionally. 2 really nice upgrades I did was the airbags in the back and Power Stop brakes at all 4 wheels.

My Grandfather just got a 2018 3.5 EcoBoost in January to replace his 2011 F-250 V8. He says it pulls his 6,000 pound trailer great, even through the hills. Great truck.
I own a 2016 f150 ecoboost with the 2.7L engine. amazing motor, never had issues tons of power when ever i need it. But i also got it for fuel economy the thing they dont tell you is you have either eco or you have boost. If im driving easy not like a granny but normally ill get between 25 and 26 mpg highway and average 20 city stop and go. If i get on it and drive it at about 60-75 percent throttle i get 19 highway and close to 15.5 city. If you tow then ofcourse less mpg but its all about how u drive the thing. something i figured out once i bought it. ECO or BOOST the choice is yours lmao.
Just hit 130k miles with my ford f150 lariat eco boost and first engine light small 200$ repair. Cant complain the amount ive driven it. Best truck ever. Where are u from? Your accent sounds sooo similar to my father now passed he was from upstate new york
Love my ecoboost and like you the remote start, heated and cooled seats, and all the bells and whistles. It's been a very reliable truck that just keeps going. Forgot mine has the 3.73 gears and Max tow package as I'm pulling a 33ft RV and gooseneck with skid steer
Pretty sure ram has out pulled ford quite a few times on the Ike gauntlet. Plus a naturally aspirated push rod v8 will out last that direct injected eco boost anyday without the major carbon problems they face. Yea the eco boost is powerful but I’d have to say it’s the least reliable engine in trucks today.
Big difference between dodge, gm and Ford. Fords are built for work and pleasure, gm is built for grocery shopping and dodge is built for some work and mostly pleasure.
My son has a Ford F150 XLT FWD with a 5.3 engine with Eco-Boost and the same comments on mileage. A few more miles than yours - 160,000 with no problems of his making of Ford's. He took it to the dealer for a 100,000 tune up. These should ONLY be done by an experienced mechanic - that's not what he got. He got an inexperienced mechanic who broke the end of one of the plugs. Instead of getting help, he started the engine. A complete engine rebuild including all the pistons, cranks, water pump and head etc. Did not cost him a penny. The dealer gave him a new F150 XLT for two weeks so he could move some horses about two hundred miles. By the time they could get a NEW head, he put about 5,000 miles on the loaner which had about 40 miles when he started out. And yes, the dealer detailed the truck at no cost.
Wow, first of all yes, some of these new motors should not be tinkered with, and like you said, they need alot more training than the old days. Good to hear the dealer took care of him, that is really impressive! I've had dealings with GM and Ford here in our town, and Ford blows them away for service hands down. Good stuff. But I think the GM staff got 'cleaned out' awhile back because the wife still goes there. They have gotten a lot better. Good on ford no doubt. Thanks.
I think he must be talking about the 5.4 V-8 engine with the 3 piece plugs. I broke 7 of those POS plugs when changing them in my 05 FX4, and it took 8 hours and a special tool to get all the plug pieces out. My 2014 F150 TREMOR with the 3.5 EB uses standard type plugs. They were easy to change, the only problem was the red locking tab on 3 of the electrical plugs connecting to the coil broke.
TED Schmitt tell me how it’s funny when the interstate’s speed limit is 80mph... a normal car/truck going much slower is going to cause safety problems, and also get called into the stat police and they’ll come give you a visit if you aren’t going close to the speed limit... yeah of course going fast you get worse mpg, but there’s nothing to to about it.
I have a 2015 f-150 with a 3.5L ecoboost with the max tow package. We bought it new. It has 205k miles on it. We tow trailers with it almost daily (16’ dump, 16’ enclosed, 18’ landscape and a 14’ dump). This is our only truck. I have towed over 20k lbs with it (gravel). We just had to put 4K into it (2 exhaust manifold gaskets, torque converter and a turbo intercooler line). At about 150k miles we had to do a catalytic converter. This truck has been incredible. Average for me is 19.5 mpg oh hwy at 70mph. 4x4 is used weekly due to dumping at the landfill.

I have a ‘15 3.5 EB and love the damn thing. Mine has 64k. Blue flame Sport Pkg. I get 19.1 mpg combined. Glad to hear the truck is a dime among junk 👍
I have the old ecoboost and it’s still great. We compared it to a 2019 5.0 v8 and it doesn’t drive anywhere near as nice with the low end turbo torque. The v8 has to rev and rev to really get moving.
@@TexasMan77 yup, avoid the gen 5.0 in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 f 150 trucks. For 2021 they seemed to fix the issues, plus the 18 to 20 has the worst front end IMO.
Great review man, I'm getting a very similar truck (XLT vs. your Lariat but otherwise more or less identical) with the same 3.5EB and I've heard glowing reviews. I don't even tow a ton of stuff but it's nice to know that I can if I need to, but also be able to pass someone on the highway and it'll respond. Picking it up the end of the month, can't wait!
You sure put this thing to work! The grades are shown in degrees, not as percentages. You definitely need that 250 diesel for your needs! Feel bad for the next owner of your F-150 though. He will be told by a dealer, that it was traded by an accountant who only used it to occasionally haul some plants and mulch from the Home Depot for his gardening hobby 😏

I had a '15 3.5 and was very skeptical going into it. It amazed me every chance it got. I had hooked it up a couple times to a similar heavy load and was amazed at how much of a work horse that motor was. At least it was until the day I rolled 85k on it and it decided to flat out quit on me. Put me DANGEROUSLY on the side/middle of the road several times in a limp critical mode with all the dash lights yet no codes. The truck would start vibrating violently at a complete stop as if it had death wobble going down a dirt road at 80 mph. With no codes and no willingness to just throw money at it I traded that hoe in, now I'm in a new body '19 Ram and loving it. Only time will tell if this one is going to last and that's the truth with any of the manufacturers. The differences though off the cuff, the ecoboost is great at accelerating whatever weight you put behind it. However, maintaining that speed is a different story. It relies heavily on the turbo spool to maintain speed. This was more apparent to me once I switched to my 5.7 3.92 Ram, which I would say can ALMOST accelerate just as well but the setup DEFINITELY feels more confident at holding that speed. Kudos to the you with the F-250, I still haven't justified upgrading to a diesel just yet. Everything you said about the F-150 was spot on and was EXACTLY what I was telling people who asked. Even the day before it started having the issues I had I was telling a guy how amazing the truck had been. Then the next day on the road sealed the end of mine. Thanks for the vid!
I'm in the market for a new truck for work, have to do light towing, nothing over 10k. I'm a college student so I need something reliable. I tell you,, I've been reading dirt on most manufacturers; starting to loose hope in the big 3.
Have a 2017 Explorer Sport, 85,000 miles. 5,000 mile vacation from Lordsburg, NM. To Casa Grande got 26 mpg. Never have had any repairs done no break downs. Will keep it for another30-35k.
I dont know how people complain about fuel economy on this engine. I just bought mine and had to drive an hour back home. I got 21 mpg on the trip with under 100 miles on the truck. Considering how much this half ton can tow it’s exceptional.

Because it's out of warranty now. It's not smart to own any of these newer vehicles out of warranty. They're only designed to make it through the warranty period. Lots of unhappy ecoboost owners paying around $3k for cam chains and phasors out of warranty.
Looks like a good truck! BTW, the grade indicator appears to be in degrees - that's the little circle. Percent is different - easily in terms of how many feet of change in elevation in 100 feet of distance traveled. A 4-degree grade is about 7% grade... 5-degrees is 8.75 percent.
Sean The entire top and front of engine has to be taken apart to remove pump. The pump is driven off the timing chain which is connected to the camshafts.
The truth of the matter regarding fuel economy is most people do not understand how the EPA ratings are derived. I'm going to try and make this short. The vehicles are not actually driven on the highway and the fuel consumption is actually measured. I'm going to explain highway driving mileage estimates only (and the key word is estimate). The truck is placed on a dyno like device that and the truck is run in high gear, at the appropriate RPMs for "X" number of miles and the amount of fuel use is measured, They will maybe test it a 55, 60 & 65 MPH (possibly even 70 MPH(. The truck is not pushing any air, and there is no load/extraneous weight in the truck. City estimates testing is similar. Most likely trucks are tested tested with the 3.23 and 3.55 axel ratios because the numbers are supposed to be fleet averages for 1/2 ton, 4 x 4 models (in your case). Then they run these numbers thru some "smoothing" algorithms that are supposed to apply "real world" conditions and restraints. The resulting numbers are given to the EPA, and if they agree, that's what goes on the window sticker. If they don't agree other real world testing is done under the auspices of the EPA. Generally, the EPA accepts probably 99.9% of all manufacturers EPA estimates, but in reality they almost always miss that estimate. And remember, it is an estimate, not a factual number. I have two 2017 Honda vehicles, and both of them exceed the EPA highway estimates by almost 2 MPG. In the city they miss them by 1 1/2 mpg. Go figure....

Right??? According to the "Ecoboost won't last 75K miles" crowd(and there's a few in this thread), the American roadsides and junk yards should be littered with blown up Ecoboosts by now. Seven years and well over 100K on mine and not a hint of a problem. With a 5 Star tune that thing still pulls like a mule. I just wonder where the RUclips warriors get their facts from?

Scrolling and found this late at night, I’ve got a 16 3.5 V6 sitting at just over 250,000 KM and only major issue I’ve had was spark plugs at around 200,000 but other than that I can’t complain and am pretty confident I can run her to the ground! Knock on wood lol
The best half ton to tow is an F-150 with the heavy duty payload package in conjunction with the max trailering package. It will come with a heavier frame. You can only get that combo with a 6.5 or 8 foot bed on XL and XLT trims. The payload ratings on those trucks will be between 2500 and 2700 pounds. That’s more payload than some fully loaded 250s with the diesel engines.

With the 3:55 gear if you’re driving it over 73MPH your mileage will go to shit........I have a 2013 with the 3.5 Ecoboost with the 3:55 gear and if I drive between 65-72MPH and I average 22MPG I only have 60,000 miles on it and it’s been a wonderful truck I LOVE the ecoboost motors!
This is great information. Im about to purchase a new 2019 f150. I wonder if Scotty Kilmar has seen this review. Scotty dont seem to think the EcoBoost is this durable
Scotty also said nissan titans are garbage and wont last 100,000 miles. I'm still driving my 06 with 160,000 miles, only had to replace brake, rotors and pads and regular oil changes.
Nothing against you but I've always liked Chevy. Oh I made a few mistakes buying 2 Rams and having one replaced free after engine blew up an that was just by starting it. A friend of mine bought the EcoBoost and didn't like it traded for a V8
I've never really been a hard core Chevy or Ford. Had many trucks over the years, many Chevy's and Fords. I see Chevy is catching up in the truck game. Nothing wrong with some competition, just like what Polaris Needed to really up the game the last couple of years. Don't think I've had a Ram though.... lol
I have a XLT 2017, the 2nd gen of the 3.5TT. It has run 75000 KM on this moment. Fuel economy is 23 mpg, with my RV ( 7000lbs) is about 15 mpg. Ok, we have no high speed on the highway here in Norway. max 110 km and 90 with the RV No problems , until the leaking oil pan . But leaking not enough for changing. Keep going, and show me the 100 K BTW, nice trailer for your tractor
I ordered mine new back in 2013. I still own it. It has the max tow 373 rear. I was thinking about trading it in for a 2021 but the reviews on the 2018 and 2019 F150's aren't that good.
Yep in hindsight I should have but that's why I bought the Chevy 3500 dump truck. That thing should have been able to handle a 14000 pound trailer but it just doesn't have the power. So that's why I didn't. Thanks
Kap, I know this is an old post, but I was wondering if you have used the heated function on the steering wheel yet? Did you like it? I drove with a cold hands several times when I didn't want to dig out my gloves before I discovered the heated steering wheel icon. I like never thought I would like nor even need one but it sure warms my hands on a cold day.
I would expect that out of any 3 year old truck. Would be nice to see some 10 year reviews out of trucks that work everyday not just on weekends. I dont think dodge would be ranked very high in that aspect

No, you would expect that out of a three year old truck that's had an EASY life. This one hasn't, so put this into perspective and give credit where credits due.
I have a 2013 with the Ecoboost(3.5 of course since the 2.7 didn't exist until two years later). It's my daily driver/work truck/weekend boat hauler. I drive real hard too. The thing just can't catch a break. I have over 100K miles and I've yet to see an engine light, a shudder, a misfire, hear a knock......just flawless. The whole truck has been flawless actually. I had brakes done front and rear just recently, changed the plugs and coil boots myself at 50 and 100K, transmission serviced at 75K. It still idles so smooth and quiet you'd think this year model had the auto start-stop feature when sitting at a light. The Ecoboost was built to last. Don't let any of the GM haters fool you. Hope this helps.

2016 f150 4door fx4 package 3.5 Ecoboost 3.55 gears, 22.5 mpg consistently at 70 mph interstate driving. Bought new in 2016 and it has been trouble free for 6 years.
I have a 2015 F150 5.0 that runs great I get around 21 highway. I've pulled as much as 16,000 pounds and it pulled great but stopping is a different story
Kapper Ford going to have you in their Commercials! I do recall getting out and locking hubs then messing with stick on floor. I love the heated and cooled seats. Fun to turn heated seat on passenger side on hot summer day and wait to see how long it takes passenger to say something. 😂
yeah I had a pickup, I think it was a Ford with locking hubs outside. And of course the Chevy still has the manual lever on the floor. but man, the push buttons are sweet!!! :)
This is a 2016, the engine was completely redone in 2017 with a 10 speed and is even better now. I had a 2011 and a 2017 Ecoboost. Both are fantastic. Never a single issue. Not one.
I have a 2014 ecoboost XLT. Less bells and whistles than yours but it's still impressive. Ford fixed many of the problems the earlier models had and the 2nd gen ecoboosts starting in 2017 are even more incredible. Mine has 135K and runs like new. Are you sure you want to give it up lol?

Hey I've have EcoBoost f150 sense 2011 you will get the mpg but only if you use 92/93 premium the turbos DON'T like regular gas I now have a 2018 with the 2.7 EcoBoost and I can get 27-28.5 MPG with 93 if I put 87/89 I'll be lucky if I can get 20
You complained about the fuel economy but it seems you pulled a lot with it. That’s going to lower the MPG’s. Especially towing 10,000-11,000lbs on a regular basis.

I still believe, a 3L engine doesn’t belong in a pickup truck. I prefer a bigger vs smaller engine - for ea vehicle we buy. Just makes sense to have more than Not Enough❕A/C pulls off a lot of HP.
I used to agree with that.... Until I owned this one.. That Ecoboost has more torque, more speed, and more power than the aspirated V8's. Its unreal...
@@kapperoutdoors KAP unfortunately most people only consider number of cylinders or engine size when making a comment like this. They should consider this, the Ford 6.8/V10 was rated at 365hp @ 457 ft/lb and the newest 3.5 will get you 450hp @ 510 ft/lb. So personal preference is one thing (and I still love my V10), but just because a particular engine is "bigger", doesn't make it better. If I have a choice, I will tow with our Ecoboost before our V10. Sorry for the long reply. Great video as always!!!!

Ya 75,000 is not a longevity review. To compare a semi truck diesel breaks in at 500,000 miles. Older American engines could get easily 300,000 miles with no rebuilding. Turbo engines burn out quicker. Lucky if you reach 150,000 without having engine issues. Speed and towing don't mix yet the public keep pushing for a faster towing vehicle. Not to mention the long run break issues in mountain areas.
Well, with modern technology, I'm sure there are many owners of the Ecoboost that have several hundred thousand miles on them... I just needed a bigger towing unit so I traded it in. Thanks.

My apologies its just when I think of a longevity review. 75 thousand miles equals 1 month of driving on a slow month for a Over the road semi truck driver. Lol I forget 75,000 could equal 5 years of usage. So at 75k miles how many of those miles in driving hills with truck loaded and with towing? I mean has it been mostly flat ground? I truly hope your right about technology dealing with the turbos and the engine block. I definitely miss the 4.0 inline 6.
Kapper Outdoors I've heard that aftermarket air bags can be installed for the F 150 to handle heavier pay loads and tow capacity without sacrificing the smooth ride during normal use.

I have 2016 sport.. I drive 7 to 8 hours to go back home and i can do it with 1 tank of gas, sometimes going 80 or 75 mph

I have a 2018 2.7 Super Crew cab and going 75 mph it creeps up to 25.7 mpg, love this truck.
Great review, I have the 3.5’s baby brother, love it, I can squeak out 23 highway, but only under perfect conditions, flat ground and no over 70 mph. In town 20.4 if I stay out of the boost, also 3.55 rearend and 6 speed. I call mine a gentleman’s truck, don’t really work it, but I’m old and not to many years away from the grave and I like driving a nice full size truck after years of S10’s and Tacoma’s.
Yes I've heard a lot of good things about the next one down, I think 2.7? They were reported to be much better on fuel and almost as strong. Thanks

I bought the first year ecoboost F150 in 2011. Never looked back. Absolutely love it. Super crew 4x4 3:73 22-25 mpg highway unloaded and driving the speed limit , tow 10-11k lbs easily, occasionally. 2 really nice upgrades I did was the airbags in the back and Power Stop brakes at all 4 wheels.

My Grandfather just got a 2018 3.5 EcoBoost in January to replace his 2011 F-250 V8. He says it pulls his 6,000 pound trailer great, even through the hills. Great truck.

I own a 2016 f150 ecoboost with the 2.7L engine. amazing motor, never had issues tons of power when ever i need it. But i also got it for fuel economy the thing they dont tell you is you have either eco or you have boost. If im driving easy not like a granny but normally ill get between 25 and 26 mpg highway and average 20 city stop and go. If i get on it and drive it at about 60-75 percent throttle i get 19 highway and close to 15.5 city. If you tow then ofcourse less mpg but its all about how u drive the thing. something i figured out once i bought it. ECO or BOOST the choice is yours lmao.
Well that's still pretty dang good mileage no doubt about that, I was only getting between 18 and 19 and I drive almost all highway.

Pretty sure ram has out pulled ford quite a few times on the Ike gauntlet. Plus a naturally aspirated push rod v8 will out last that direct injected eco boost anyday without the major carbon problems they face. Yea the eco boost is powerful but I’d have to say it’s the least reliable engine in trucks today.

My son has a Ford F150 XLT FWD with a 5.3 engine with Eco-Boost and the same comments on mileage. A few more miles than yours - 160,000 with no problems of his making of Ford's. He took it to the dealer for a 100,000 tune up. These should ONLY be done by an experienced mechanic - that's not what he got. He got an inexperienced mechanic who broke the end of one of the plugs. Instead of getting help, he started the engine. A complete engine rebuild including all the pistons, cranks, water pump and head etc. Did not cost him a penny. The dealer gave him a new F150 XLT for two weeks so he could move some horses about two hundred miles. By the time they could get a NEW head, he put about 5,000 miles on the loaner which had about 40 miles when he started out. And yes, the dealer detailed the truck at no cost.
Wow, first of all yes, some of these new motors should not be tinkered with, and like you said, they need alot more training than the old days. Good to hear the dealer took care of him, that is really impressive! I've had dealings with GM and Ford here in our town, and Ford blows them away for service hands down. Good stuff. But I think the GM staff got 'cleaned out' awhile back because the wife still goes there. They have gotten a lot better. Good on ford no doubt. Thanks.

I think he must be talking about the 5.4 V-8 engine with the 3 piece plugs. I broke 7 of those POS plugs when changing them in my 05 FX4, and it took 8 hours and a special tool to get all the plug pieces out. My 2014 F150 TREMOR with the 3.5 EB uses standard type plugs. They were easy to change, the only problem was the red locking tab on 3 of the electrical plugs connecting to the coil broke.

TED Schmitt tell me how it’s funny when the interstate’s speed limit is 80mph... a normal car/truck going much slower is going to cause safety problems, and also get called into the stat police and they’ll come give you a visit if you aren’t going close to the speed limit... yeah of course going fast you get worse mpg, but there’s nothing to to about it.
I have a 2015 f-150 with a 3.5L ecoboost with the max tow package. We bought it new. It has 205k miles on it. We tow trailers with it almost daily (16’ dump, 16’ enclosed, 18’ landscape and a 14’ dump). This is our only truck. I have towed over 20k lbs with it (gravel). We just had to put 4K into it (2 exhaust manifold gaskets, torque converter and a turbo intercooler line). At about 150k miles we had to do a catalytic converter. This truck has been incredible. Average for me is 19.5 mpg oh hwy at 70mph. 4x4 is used weekly due to dumping at the landfill.

I have a ‘15 3.5 EB and love the damn thing. Mine has 64k. Blue flame Sport Pkg. I get 19.1 mpg combined. Glad to hear the truck is a dime among junk 👍
I have the old ecoboost and it’s still great. We compared it to a 2019 5.0 v8 and it doesn’t drive anywhere near as nice with the low end turbo torque. The v8 has to rev and rev to really get moving.

Great review man, I'm getting a very similar truck (XLT vs. your Lariat but otherwise more or less identical) with the same 3.5EB and I've heard glowing reviews. I don't even tow a ton of stuff but it's nice to know that I can if I need to, but also be able to pass someone on the highway and it'll respond. Picking it up the end of the month, can't wait!

You sure put this thing to work! The grades are shown in degrees, not as percentages. You definitely need that 250 diesel for your needs! Feel bad for the next owner of your F-150 though. He will be told by a dealer, that it was traded by an accountant who only used it to occasionally haul some plants and mulch from the Home Depot for his gardening hobby 😏

I had a '15 3.5 and was very skeptical going into it. It amazed me every chance it got. I had hooked it up a couple times to a similar heavy load and was amazed at how much of a work horse that motor was. At least it was until the day I rolled 85k on it and it decided to flat out quit on me. Put me DANGEROUSLY on the side/middle of the road several times in a limp critical mode with all the dash lights yet no codes. The truck would start vibrating violently at a complete stop as if it had death wobble going down a dirt road at 80 mph. With no codes and no willingness to just throw money at it I traded that hoe in, now I'm in a new body '19 Ram and loving it. Only time will tell if this one is going to last and that's the truth with any of the manufacturers.
The differences though off the cuff, the ecoboost is great at accelerating whatever weight you put behind it. However, maintaining that speed is a different story. It relies heavily on the turbo spool to maintain speed. This was more apparent to me once I switched to my 5.7 3.92 Ram, which I would say can ALMOST accelerate just as well but the setup DEFINITELY feels more confident at holding that speed.
Kudos to the you with the F-250, I still haven't justified upgrading to a diesel just yet. Everything you said about the F-150 was spot on and was EXACTLY what I was telling people who asked. Even the day before it started having the issues I had I was telling a guy how amazing the truck had been. Then the next day on the road sealed the end of mine. Thanks for the vid!

Have a 2017 Explorer Sport, 85,000 miles. 5,000 mile vacation from Lordsburg, NM. To Casa Grande got 26 mpg. Never have had any repairs done no break downs. Will keep it for another30-35k.

I just bought mine and had to drive an hour back home. I got 21 mpg on the trip with under 100 miles on the truck.

Because it's out of warranty now. It's not smart to own any of these newer vehicles out of warranty. They're only designed to make it through the warranty period. Lots of unhappy ecoboost owners paying around $3k for cam chains and phasors out of warranty.

BTW, the grade indicator appears to be in degrees - that's the little circle. Percent is different - easily in terms of how many feet of change in elevation in 100 feet of distance traveled. A 4-degree grade is about 7% grade... 5-degrees is 8.75 percent.
Why did Ford install the water pump inside the 3.5 Ecoboost? Ford charges $2,500 to replace water pump.

Sean The entire top and front of engine has to be taken apart to remove pump. The pump is driven off the timing chain which is connected to the camshafts.

The truth of the matter regarding fuel economy is most people do not understand how the EPA ratings are derived. I'm going to try and make this short. The vehicles are not actually driven on the highway and the fuel consumption is actually measured. I'm going to explain highway driving mileage estimates only (and the key word is estimate). The truck is placed on a dyno like device that and the truck is run in high gear, at the appropriate RPMs for "X" number of miles and the amount of fuel use is measured, They will maybe test it a 55, 60 & 65 MPH (possibly even 70 MPH(. The truck is not pushing any air, and there is no load/extraneous weight in the truck. City estimates testing is similar. Most likely trucks are tested tested with the 3.23 and 3.55 axel ratios because the numbers are supposed to be fleet averages for 1/2 ton, 4 x 4 models (in your case). Then they run these numbers thru some "smoothing" algorithms that are supposed to apply "real world" conditions and restraints. The resulting numbers are given to the EPA, and if they agree, that's what goes on the window sticker. If they don't agree other real world testing is done under the auspices of the EPA. Generally, the EPA accepts probably 99.9% of all manufacturers EPA estimates, but in reality they almost always miss that estimate. And remember, it is an estimate, not a factual number. I have two 2017 Honda vehicles, and both of them exceed the EPA highway estimates by almost 2 MPG. In the city they miss them by 1 1/2 mpg. Go figure....

Right??? According to the "Ecoboost won't last 75K miles" crowd(and there's a few in this thread), the American roadsides and junk yards should be littered with blown up Ecoboosts by now. Seven years and well over 100K on mine and not a hint of a problem. With a 5 Star tune that thing still pulls like a mule. I just wonder where the RUclips warriors get their facts from?

Scrolling and found this late at night, I’ve got a 16 3.5 V6 sitting at just over 250,000 KM and only major issue I’ve had was spark plugs at around 200,000 but other than that I can’t complain and am pretty confident I can run her to the ground! Knock on wood lol

The best half ton to tow is an F-150 with the heavy duty payload package in conjunction with the max trailering package. It will come with a heavier frame. You can only get that combo with a 6.5 or 8 foot bed on XL and XLT trims. The payload ratings on those trucks will be between 2500 and 2700 pounds. That’s more payload than some fully loaded 250s with the diesel engines.

With the 3:55 gear if you’re driving it over 73MPH your mileage will go to shit........I have a 2013 with the 3.5 Ecoboost with the 3:55 gear and if I drive between 65-72MPH and I average 22MPG I only have 60,000 miles on it and it’s been a wonderful truck I LOVE the ecoboost motors!

Scotty also said nissan titans are garbage and wont last 100,000 miles. I'm still driving my 06 with 160,000 miles, only had to replace brake, rotors and pads and regular oil changes.

Nothing against you but I've always liked Chevy. Oh I made a few mistakes buying 2 Rams and having one replaced free after engine blew up an that was just by starting it. A friend of mine bought the EcoBoost and didn't like it traded for a V8

Fuel economy is 23 mpg, with my RV ( 7000lbs) is about 15 mpg.

I ordered mine new back in 2013. I still own it. It has the max tow 373 rear. I was thinking about trading it in for a 2021 but the reviews on the 2018 and 2019 F150's aren't that good.

I drove with a cold hands several times when I didn't want to dig out my gloves before I discovered the heated steering wheel icon. I like never thought I would like nor even need one but it sure warms my hands on a cold day.

I would expect that out of any 3 year old truck. Would be nice to see some 10 year reviews out of trucks that work everyday not just on weekends. I dont think dodge would be ranked very high in that aspect

No, you would expect that out of a three year old truck that's had an EASY life. This one hasn't, so put this into perspective and give credit where credits due.
I have a 2013 with the Ecoboost(3.5 of course since the 2.7 didn't exist until two years later). It's my daily driver/work truck/weekend boat hauler. I drive real hard too. The thing just can't catch a break. I have over 100K miles and I've yet to see an engine light, a shudder, a misfire, hear a knock......just flawless. The whole truck has been flawless actually. I had brakes done front and rear just recently, changed the plugs and coil boots myself at 50 and 100K, transmission serviced at 75K. It still idles so smooth and quiet you'd think this year model had the auto start-stop feature when sitting at a light. The Ecoboost was built to last. Don't let any of the GM haters fool you. Hope this helps.

2016 f150 4door fx4 package 3.5 Ecoboost 3.55 gears, 22.5 mpg consistently at 70 mph interstate driving. Bought new in 2016 and it has been trouble free for 6 years.

I have a 2015 F150 5.0 that runs great I get around 21 highway. I've pulled as much as 16,000 pounds and it pulled great but stopping is a different story

yeah I had a pickup, I think it was a Ford with locking hubs outside. And of course the Chevy still has the manual lever on the floor. but man, the push buttons are sweet!!! :)
This is a 2016, the engine was completely redone in 2017 with a 10 speed and is even better now. I had a 2011 and a 2017 Ecoboost. Both are fantastic. Never a single issue. Not one.

I have a 2014 ecoboost XLT. Less bells and whistles than yours but it's still impressive. Ford fixed many of the problems the earlier models had and the 2nd gen ecoboosts starting in 2017 are even more incredible. Mine has 135K and runs like new. Are you sure you want to give it up lol?

Hey I've have EcoBoost f150 sense 2011 you will get the mpg but only if you use 92/93 premium the turbos DON'T like regular gas I now have a 2018 with the 2.7 EcoBoost and I can get 27-28.5 MPG with 93 if I put 87/89 I'll be lucky if I can get 20

You complained about the fuel economy but it seems you pulled a lot with it. That’s going to lower the MPG’s. Especially towing 10,000-11,000lbs on a regular basis.

I have a 2017 2.7 16k miles. I'm on my third oil pan. Keep an eye on your plastic rtv sealed pan. They are junk
I heard a lot of horror stories about their timing chain driven water pumps going bad and getting anti-freeze in the oil.
Not heard much about that. Keep in mind they own the majority of the truck market so there are a lot of Ford trucks out there, all machines have some problems from time to time. Totally love my new Super Duty for sure, thanks.
Only the transverse mounted 3.5 have this issue. All the f150 have an external water pump!
I still believe, a 3L engine doesn’t belong in a pickup truck.
I prefer a bigger vs smaller engine - for ea vehicle we buy.
Just makes sense to have more than Not Enough❕A/C pulls off a lot of HP.
I used to agree with that.... Until I owned this one.. That Ecoboost has more torque, more speed, and more power than the aspirated V8's. Its unreal...
@@kapperoutdoors KAP unfortunately most people only consider number of cylinders or engine size when making a comment like this. They should consider this, the Ford 6.8/V10 was rated at 365hp @ 457 ft/lb and the newest 3.5 will get you 450hp @ 510 ft/lb. So personal preference is one thing (and I still love my V10), but just because a particular engine is "bigger", doesn't make it better. If I have a choice, I will tow with our Ecoboost before our V10. Sorry for the long reply. Great video as always!!!!
Kapper Outdoors that twin turbo V6 is gonna lose to the n/a v8 on mpg’s when pulling loaded trailers & it’s not gonna last trouble free miles like that n/a 5.0 either

Coyote 150 ford is phasing out v8 for turbo v6. Its already happening with the raptor, ford gt, and now f150. Pretty soon mustangs
Ya 75,000 is not a longevity review. To compare a semi truck diesel breaks in at 500,000 miles. Older American engines could get easily 300,000 miles with no rebuilding. Turbo engines burn out quicker. Lucky if you reach 150,000 without having engine issues. Speed and towing don't mix yet the public keep pushing for a faster towing vehicle. Not to mention the long run break issues in mountain areas.
Well, with modern technology, I'm sure there are many owners of the Ecoboost that have several hundred thousand miles on them... I just needed a bigger towing unit so I traded it in. Thanks.
@@kapperoutdoors fair enough! Would be nice if there was a vehicle that had an engine that needed no maintenance after 150k. My apologies its just when I think of a longevity review. 75 thousand miles equals 1 month of driving on a slow month for a Over the road semi truck driver. Lol I forget 75,000 could equal 5 years of usage. So at 75k miles how many of those miles in driving hills with truck loaded and with towing? I mean has it been mostly flat ground?
I truly hope your right about technology dealing with the turbos and the engine block. I definitely miss the 4.0 inline 6.
Diesel one may have better gas mileage.
So...why trade it in? The dealer is gonna beat you up with the high mileage.

The only way he's going to get more power is to go with a 3/4 ton diesel. Ecoboost can't be f'd with by the outdated gas V8s.
Kapper Outdoors I've heard that aftermarket air bags can be installed for the F 150 to handle heavier pay loads and tow capacity without sacrificing the smooth ride during normal use.
