Question of the day: How much progress did you make on your layout in 2024?
I re built a section of my layout because of faulty wiring (my fault). But made some progress. Not a lot, but some. I plan on doing more this year
I managed to actually get started, I switched from HO to N
that’s awesome
I have a bunch of N scale just waiting for me lol.
Love it
I made more progress than I could have imagined. Started the year having just finished the benchwork...ended the year with all but a few sections of track laid, wired and operational, a few dozen structures built and a healthy start on the most scenic portion of my layout. I could not be happier with my progress. Thank you for sharing yours!
I started 2024 with no layout, and now I have a 3 track switching layout with some buildings and scenery. Its a start!
Mike from Parsons. The N scale Layout was started when I moved to my present location back in June of 2020. So I have been working on it for almost 5 years and it's still not done. But that's what I enjoy about this hobby. The variety of things you can do. Work on wiring, scenery, bench work or put everything aside and just operate. So I agree with what you were saying. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. By the way I love the progress on your fantastic layout. Keep up the great work.
It's shaping up wonderful!!!👍💯
Thank you, Ron! It’s keeping me busy. It’s always nice to step back and see some progress little by little!
Well............. actually, when you are 81, there IS a "race to the finish line". I hope I get mine to what I can call a finished state before I buck out of this rodeo (called "life") for good. Really like that EMD "chatter" the Rapido GP38 is making in this video. Love your layout. Thanks again.
Great presentation, Mike. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see the new crossing signals.
Thank you! Yes, I’m looking forward to getting some new signals in. That’ll be in the works sometime very soon- and I’ll be sure to give everyone an update when I get those installed.

Nice trains, Mike ❤
Thank you, I appreciate that!
It took me 3+ years to even get my layout wired properly. Finally got it done a couple days ago. Still haven't built any structures, only a small section of ground cover, still haven't cut out the creek. The track is in place, it's operational, foam is painted, some ballasting and that's it.

I have tons of work to do. I'm 5 almost 6 years into it. The layout is built, trains run, a few industries to build and a lower staging yard will be built this year. No where close to done.
Your layout is looking great.
Hi, Adam! I appreciate that. It sounds like you still have plenty to keep you busy. I’ll be building a lower level staging yard eventually. But, that’ll be way after I get the first level further along. Maybe by the time I reach the same 5 year point!
Crying out for a backdrop. Nice work so far.
Hello! Thank you. Yes, I agree the sky barren, but a backdrop is in the works. I’m planning to use photos from the prototype location. But, since my layout is set in the summer, I need to wait until the trees are green to go on that photo shoot. I’m thinking it’ll really liven things up and I’m looking forward to that project.
Thanks!
Hello! Thank you very much for your support of the channel. That really means a lot and I certainly appreciate it! -Mike
I enjoy the progress you make, love the rapido GP38. I spend most of my time updating and making old AHM, Tyco, Athearn blue Bo’s cars working again. It’s the journey 👍🏻
Hello Main Track Trains & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Main Track Train Friends Randy
Hi, Randy! Thank you, friend. I appreciate you watching!
I'm still at the acquiring the equipment stage, I switched from HO to N Scale, as a full
time OTR Truck Driver I only have Saturdays to get out to
Indianapolis to hit up the
Hobby Shop plus it's hard to
find Conrail equipment so it
looks like a lot of stuff I want
for a mid 80s layout I'll have to
paint and decal myself, but that's part of the process I'm
in right now!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Looks great Mike coming along nicely your doing a fantastic job. Not much progress on mine in 2024 making few changes after op sessions and hopefully 🤞 starting the second level this year.
Looks really good! My dad grew up in Sedalia, MO, so I instantly recognized the bridge over Broadway (US-50) near the old Smith-Cotton High School in your flashback and a couple of the crossings near 16th Street as the Katy turns southwest . My grandparents used to live at the corner of 14th and Park Ave. and we would cross those tracks to go to their church on Ingram Ave.
Exactly it is not a race. Doing some major upgrades to my layout. I think it has been close to 3 years that nay trains have run on the layout. it is probably close to 6 years that anything has run on the lower deck of the layout as I focus on the top deck. But like any project from cars to trains, it might seem like a long time to the finish line than all the sudden you are have completed that big project. Then one to the next big thing...

I thought your progress has been great! Didn’t realize it’s been a year already. Myself and few other guys started a dive into building Free-Mo mods this summer. Got my first two done with scenery and 3 more mods built today for another friend.
Trailers look good with the jack pads down now btw!

My layout is about two years old now! I have one portion undergoing scenery work but the other 2/3rds is just plywood still! It's my first layout back in the hobby as an adult so the progress is slow-ish because I'm learning as I go! Also, documenting my layout with video does slow down construction since I have to think through production, set up for shooting, and editing. But I'm having fun building and documenting so I'm not in a race!
My current layout is over 20 years old, and I have slowly been collecting materials far a new one, along with building structures. I have learned a lot in the last 20+ years about scenery, structures, and weathering. So, I feel that slow progress is good progress, especially when you incorporate learning into the process.
That’s great! Collecting stuff beforehand is a good idea. Even during periods I’ve had between layouts, I always tried to work on buildings, rolling stock, etc. knowing I’d eventually have a place to put them. And, it seems like there’s always something new to learn. I think I would get bored if had already mastered everything! Ha.
Thanks for the update! I ran into the same issues when trying to reuse benchwork after my last move.
In regard to your progress question. My layout is fully operational with the golden spike ceremony happening two months ago. But a long way from all the scenery and structures being complete.
Working full time and other responsibilities make it a part-time hobby.
Nice introspective video. To answer your question, not nearly enough. It's funny to think about 23years ago I had a plan to "finish" my layout by the end of 2022. Needless to say that didn't happen and I am finally ok with that. I'm now learning to enjoy the journey. Though I don't want to be someone who never sees my layout get to the finishing stages I also understand I really enjoy the building part of the hobby. If I finish, what's next? You have accomplished a great deal and am sure you will this year as well. Kudos to your milestones this past year.

Your trackwork is super realistic. I'd love to know how you guys manage to have track look so prototypical
I also reused my old layout when we moved about five years ago. I had to make adjustments since the layout room at my current house was much larger than the one in the old house. I also have realized that I should have made some modifications to make my layout more stable. I had an open house during November Model Railroad Month and with the added traffic in my layout I realized my benchwork needed additional bracing. I have very little scenery in place. I would much rather run my trains than do scenery! Anyway thanks for the update.
Your layout is looking fantastic! I love the way that GP38 turned out.
Shame the old layout sections didnt work out, but it gives the opportunity to do something new in its place
Hey! Thank you…I really need to get some weathering on that to tone down the blue! Ha. While it would have been nice to reuse everything, it is working out just fine. Scrapping the parts has provided plenty of lumber…which is good considering new wood isn’t getting any cheaper!
@@MainTrack ditto that on lumber prices. I lucked out on plywood last year and found some that was a little more than half of what Lowe's/HD were charging.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE , MY MN&S /GN/RI. Layout has a long way to go ,Bussey modifying all my SINAHARA switches for DCC.
NICE layout! Just needs some weathering on everything!!!
Making progress and it looks great so far!
Thank you, Mark. I appreciate that!
Nice work I like the way you pay attention to track side detail such as telephone poles

I've been in a funk lately in the hobby but hopping revisiting the OMRA club layout more will jump start the bug and get myself back working on my layout. In away im considering rebuilding my layout yet.
Yes, I get into slumps sometimes as well. But, I can usually get some “umph” back when I visit a train show or other layouts. That usually gets my wheels turning for new projects and whatnot. The OMRA layout is definitely one that inspires me!
Slow and steady!
I wish I had time to start. I got 3 new cars today and wish I had time to start a small layout.
It can definitely take time. I’ve had a couple of breaks in life from the hobby when things were busier- raising a family, moves, etc. Thankfully life has slowed down somewhat!
My layout is about 99% finished-no more room for any new stuff. Am in the process of relocating my work bench to the layout building, and can start with working on rolling stock-weathering, etc.
Mike, what manufacturer makes that all-weather window you put on that Ex-Conrail GP38? I have two IHB NW2s that need all-weather windows, and that one on that GP38 looks really nice. Do they come pre-painted like that too?
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support I need all feedback on my train videos thank you
Thank you, Mark!
Hello! These Windows’s are by Athearn. Search for “Athearn HO All-Weather Window” on eBay and there are several available. I’ve seen two or three different sizes/versions (two or three pane)- depending on which one you need. They come in six packs and are already painted with the glass installed. It makes it pretty easy. My Athearn Genesis GP38-2s came with them as optional details, and I used one for this project. But, I plan on buying a pack of extras sometime soon for my other units that need them. I think they’re a cool little touch!
Mike, wouldn't a trip to the Amhearst Model Railroad show in MA been fun? Brian
Hi, Brian! Yes it would be! That one has been on my bucket list for a while. I’ve been a little envious of all the guys posting pictures of all the fun they’re having! Ha.
I’m hoping to start my first “official” layout this year. Going to be a 6’x2’ switching layout since I don’t have a basement or a lot of space.
my is in a 16 by 20 room between all the things going on my life 100 years before I'm done.😀
Hello! That sounds like a pretty decent size and plenty to keep you busy! During planning, I thought my space wouldn’t be big enough for everything I wanted. Now I’m realizing I have my work cut out for me- plus some!
Doing ballast requires lots of consuming of ethanol.
Hello! Yes, I go through plenty of alcohol when doing the track. I’m thankful my layout room has plenty of windows- so I can use a fan to air it out. I don’t need to get dizzy! Ha.
@@MainTrack What I meant was that doing ballast drives you to drink.
Ah, yes! That's also very true! Haha. It can be enough of a task that you need to take the edge off a little!
