  • Months after a crisis left Jackson, Mississippi, without running water, residents still don’t trust a water system that has plagued them for decades. In “Boiling Point: A City’s Fight for Clean Water,” we hear from a community that feels fulfilling the most basic need for human survival can be a daily reminder that those who live in a poor, mostly Black city don’t seem to matter. Is a legacy of racism at the heart of the problem?

In the winter my water bill drops to around $150/mo. The state of Kansas will never send money to a city in the state of Mississippi for water infrastructure. If the citizens are that disfunctional why should we artifically extend the life of that community with outside resources? So a brief check of the Annual Drinking Water Quality Report shows some deficiencies, mostly surrounding turbidity and one release of a treating chemical at a higher than recommended rate. The document also lays out the systemic issues that have been present since 2016, and those are damming from function and condition of the treatment facilities themselves to inadequate staffing. The EPA currently has an administrative compliance order in place to ensure that changes are made to the system. These issues have been going on for years, known about for that time and yet nothing seems to have been done about it. The real reason the system is failing was presented well: the lack of taxpayer funding, and poor supervision of the city government for decades. The current municipal bonds are rated as “junk” so there is definitely a funding issue and long term financial stability is questionable. How that can be chocked up to “systemic racism” is a stretch. Bernie Thompson (featured in the story) stated that if the city was incapable of supporting the system they needed to be replaced as administrators. At any rate, the EPA and feds seem to have stepped in, hopefully we can cut through the political BS and get the water system repaired for these people.

State and federal government responsible for fixing a problem that more than likely the city created to begin with?
Nearby to the Flint area, pretty sure you've heard of the water problem in that city, right?
Even though this has been brought up many times over, here it goes again.
City of Flint government made it illegal for people inside the city limits to have a well for water. Forcing people into the city water system, which in turn became the source of the water problem in Flint!
Only fix the state/federal government could possibly do is take over control of all city operations, and remove all city level elected government officials from their positions.
Of course this is being based on the city I'm most familiar with (Flint) but it wouldnt surprise me in the least if Jackson Mississippi (along with many other locations) was in the exact same position as Flint, that made privately owned wells illegal forcing residents into city water.
Now keep in mind, you get what you vote for, in the case of Flint (I'm guessing Jackson Mississippi also)
They vote blue no matter who.
Ironically enough, expecting a better outcome than the last time they voted blue.
The city level government caused the water problem to begin with!
      Not state or federal level.

To run any city, state, or nation you need a source of income for the governing body. Hence there is taxation. But taxation depends on citizens having the funds to pay taxes. If they are poor and constantly needing assistance they can't contribute. I know nothing of Jackson but I suspect it doesn't have the tax base to support all of it's services. If it does have the tax base then those governing the city aren't using it correctly. It has to be one or the other.
As far as the state is concerned it is an enigma. Its headquarters are in Jackson yet it seems to be doing nothing. Why? Just asking.
