- Months after a crisis left Jackson, Mississippi, without running water, residents still don’t trust a water system that has plagued them for decades. In “Boiling Point: A City’s Fight for Clean Water,” we hear from a community that feels fulfilling the most basic need for human survival can be a daily reminder that those who live in a poor, mostly Black city don’t seem to matter. Is a legacy of racism at the heart of the problem?

It's call greed. I bet you their governor, all the politicians in Mississippi has clean water.
Why is the state responisible for the day to day activities of the city. In america its up to the city to raise money for their own water infrastructure. It truly sounds like a bunch of people who dont want to raise taxes and would rather wait to see if they can get a handout from someone else.
@@thedude5040 EXACTLY they have to raise taxes and the people have to accept that. Glad it's not like this everywhere
@@eredinbreaccglas3935 the border needs to have a hard shut down. 5% of our military budget to blow up half of Russia's conventional war ammunition is money very well spent. The american tax payer has never before got so much value in return as the Ukraine military.

Joanna Radacina: I agree. In the USA there is absolutely no excuse for this.
I left Jackson, MS almost 2 decades ago and it baffles me to this day that the city is still in a state of crumbling. Whoever is to blame, city or state, black or white, republican or democrat should be a shame in themselves!!! I've traveled the world since leaving and this is unsatisfactory! I pray for real leadership at all levels to resolve Jacksons problem. 🙏🏾

Exactly 💯
I bet the building better infrastructure funding accounted for Mississippi clean water needs.
Right, this going on under who ever, the Mayor,Governor,Senator watch should be a shame to say this is my city and this how we do our city
This is the Capitol of the state! Wtf
Those prayers will kick in any day now.
Why in the United States would you treat your own CITIZENS badly!! margInalizing people using strategies is evil and UNJUST. For a Nation to prosper all people must prosper together as a nation. Hurting people is backward behavior.
How about the people build their own success stories instead of always complaining that the Man ain't doing it for them?
In the united states its up to individual communities to solve their own problems. They can raise taxes and bonds themselves and fix their own problems like the rest of the country. In my small town of immigrants we raised millions of dollars to build state of the art water treatment plants. All the sewage water is 100% recyceled and pumped out to farms with some organics left in so farmers dont have to spend money in fertlizer. I moved to a different area and I have $400 water bills in Kansas for clean water.
@@thedude5040 It's because they don't have any basic human rights in America. It's 2022 and yet they still shackle, torture and execute their own citizens, so providing them with clean drinkable water isn't on their list of priorities. When you consider that the sounds of their own children screaming for their lives while being massacred at school doesn't make Americans want to protect its own people it's little wonder that they're still boiling water like cavemen.
1080 00 Is your answer, that's why!
You get what you vote for.
It’s ridiculous we in America have areas that don’t have access to clean waters like what are the representatives in Mississippi doing???
Its up to the local communities to raise taxes and water rates for their own infrastructure! I spend $400/mo for water in a rural water in Kansas because thats how much infrastructure costs for clean water. The city council needs to vote for drastic tax increases to fix problems themselves. The city of wichita kansas is raising over a billion dollars for clean water infrastructure. The city of Wichita Kansas set aside large line items in its budget to pay back loans it took out for water infrastructure. Why cant jackson do the same? Sounds like a lack of community education rather than racism
@@thedude5040 wrong example. Wichita’s majority ethnic group is White & it is richer than Jackson, which happened to be Black majority city. It is a racism, period.
@@vince01lp not racism. What about dodge city kansas that raised 10s of millions of dollars to build state of the art water recycling facilities? They are >80 poor hispanic in a rural town of 30,000 people.

Excellent piece!! Very well captured. Heartbreaking. Just riveting. 💔
Jackson is the poorest county in the state of Mississippi. Most people don't have the resources to up and move like many are suggesting.
Also, the officials in Mississippi have all voted against the infrastructure bills for years.
F'ing terrible! This is absolutely a basic human need, and the government in Mississippi is responsible.
My mother and father lived there for 2.5 years and now I'm worried about them.
Thank a republican!
How can the current mayor be responsible for a problem that began decades before his birth? How is he supposed to fix the water system without resources? The Brett Favre situation should have been mentioned although I understand why it probably was omitted. It is clear that the governor has some personal issue with the mayor. Educated African Americans are often seen as threatening by those who cannot control them. It is a “ stay in your place” attitude. Mississippi, the eyes of the world are upon you. Don ‘t just do better. Finally do the right thing by the people of Jackson and replace the entire water system. Just do what you would do if your family members and friends were being affected.
My birth city. Some relatives still there. What a shame. 🙏🏾💗
This is heart breaking. I pray these people get help ... reliable water is so important!
Get it fixed NOW!!!
Nah gotta support Ukraine first and to the last dollar
And what about the people in prison? They can't boil their water. WTF!?!!!

I believe our water supplies are being targeted to help remove the over population of humanity. This is a sinister plan, part of the WEF's plan for the Great Reset. Much more is happening all at once to depopulate the planet currently.
It's up to us as individuals to protect ourselves as best we can, from this onslaught of genocide.

I live in a city without drining water problems but still refuse to drink or cook with the tap water because of many chemicals I can smell and taste in it.

America seems worse and worse as an outsider looking in. Water America really??? The greed in their government is insane. Same in Detroit too no?
Its up to local communities to repair their own water infrastrucure irregardless of the cost or peoples ability to pay. Forinstance in the summer I have $400/mo water bills. In the winter my water bill drops to around $150/mo. The state of Kansas will never send money to a city in the state of Mississippi for water infrastructure. If the citizens are that disfunctional why should we artifically extend the life of that community with outside resources? We would rather have the citizens of Jackson Mississippi learn a lesson by having to abandon their homes and move somewhere else than giving them money to fix their water.
@the dude I'm just outside of Toronto my water bill is $170 CDN on average every 3 months. We do have clean tap water here too in alot of Canada because of all the fresh water. However our indigenous communities further north are treat so bad that they don't even have clean drinking water.
@@SMOOVKILL1 when I had a single apartment my water bills was a nominal $100 every 3 months. Back then my electric bill in my 800sq ft apartment averaged $110 with a high of $180/mo in the winter.
Looks like the Flint, Michigan water. 💧
@Zivety Yes their was lead in the water and they some how changed their water source from lake huron and the Detroit River to the flint river. I cant remember but it had something to do with GM. Seeing those kids with high levels of lead was sad.
So devastating, don’t stop reporting on this please!
Poor baby: water makes you sick…
I heard on another report that clean water will be the next “bootleg” industry you think 🤔
Yes. #Nestles has entered the chat.
They have to replace their entire piping system. Patching is not appropriate for a system that old.
This kind of crisis could happen to anyone and anywhere at anytime (unfortunately)
So a brief check of the Annual Drinking Water Quality Report shows some deficiencies, mostly surrounding turbidity and one release of a treating chemical at a higher than recommended rate. The document also lays out the systemic issues that have been present since 2016, and those are damming from function and condition of the treatment facilities themselves to inadequate staffing. The EPA currently has an administrative compliance order in place to ensure that changes are made to the system. These issues have been going on for years, known about for that time and yet nothing seems to have been done about it. The real reason the system is failing was presented well: the lack of taxpayer funding, and poor supervision of the city government for decades. The current municipal bonds are rated as “junk” so there is definitely a funding issue and long term financial stability is questionable. How that can be chocked up to “systemic racism” is a stretch. Bernie Thompson (featured in the story) stated that if the city was incapable of supporting the system they needed to be replaced as administrators. At any rate, the EPA and feds seem to have stepped in, hopefully we can cut through the political BS and get the water system repaired for these people.
A governor joking about their Capitol City is just silly. How do you abandon your Capitol City in your state?
That’s very sad that only happens in third world countries. 😢 it’s the state and country federal government should fix this mess.
It happens in communites with low education. In america, its up to local communities to raise taxes to pay for their own water infrastructure. For instance I have $400/mo water bills in rural Kansas because thats how much it costs for a small population to raise the capital needed for clean water.
We are a third world. No health care but got money for Ukraine all day. Now drink your water and watch MSNBC
State and federal government responsible for fixing a problem that more than likely the city created to begin with?
Nearby to the Flint area, pretty sure you've heard of the water problem in that city, right?
Even though this has been brought up many times over, here it goes again.
City of Flint government made it illegal for people inside the city limits to have a well for water. Forcing people into the city water system, which in turn became the source of the water problem in Flint!
Only fix the state/federal government could possibly do is take over control of all city operations, and remove all city level elected government officials from their positions.
Of course this is being based on the city I'm most familiar with (Flint) but it wouldnt surprise me in the least if Jackson Mississippi (along with many other locations) was in the exact same position as Flint, that made privately owned wells illegal forcing residents into city water.
Now keep in mind, you get what you vote for, in the case of Flint (I'm guessing Jackson Mississippi also)
They vote blue no matter who.
Ironically enough, expecting a better outcome than the last time they voted blue.
The city level government caused the water problem to begin with!
Not state or federal level.
Horrific. No one should have to live like that.
I bet the bottled water companies love this crisis
A few years ago it snowed alot in jackson and the water was off for 2 weeks in the city
To run any city, state, or nation you need a source of income for the governing body. Hence there is taxation. But taxation depends on citizens having the funds to pay taxes. If they are poor and constantly needing assistance they can't contribute. I know nothing of Jackson but I suspect it doesn't have the tax base to support all of it's services. If it does have the tax base then those governing the city aren't using it correctly. It has to be one or the other.
As far as the state is concerned it is an enigma. Its headquarters are in Jackson yet it seems to be doing nothing. Why? Just asking.
The cities management has been screwing this up for decades. The current in office have mismanaged all the money to fix alot of these problems.
Infrastructure is a constant evolution and lools like no work has been done at all.
Also city taxes and utility proceeds seem to go somewhere other than back into the city.
Crazy that all these years not one elected city official has ever been held accountable.
Now its we need help, instead of we need to fix this problem we have had for 50 years.
How much would an entirely new water infrastructure cost compared with how much equipment they left in Afghanistan?
Very well stated and on point! This h20 situation in MS is very sad, as if it is a third-world country.
🤣 there no money in fixing problems here! They left the weapons there so they can build new ones for the machine.

It's about the mountains. Oregon gets their water from watersheds and aquafers.
Most of the poor cities pull water from local river.
Americans don't have the right to clean water?! They're always crowing about their rights, clean water is a basic human right throughout the whole world, what can't America figure out about clean running water?! Ridiculous. At least they can say "down with the King" wow so free haha.
Something doesn't add up, how come the hospitals, urgent care, elderly homes, clinics, the fire department not speaking up. Especially the national guard and reserve I know there has to be some military presence there.
I feel like this should been brought up years ago talking boiling water off and on. Go and replace the pipes at the water facility. I mean who is running that facility?
Its the pipes across the entire city, including the ones in houses. In a city like jackson that could mean tearing up 1000s of miles of roads and backyards to replace water pipes.

The state? Racism? It's on these people to vote in the right local officials who should have used the tax dollars to fix these problems. Bro rewatch it again the whole state gets federal money except Jackson. It's an obvious racial issue.
Ah yes, so citizens must wait and hopefully survive until the next reelection and period just to get clean water? Wrong. Easy to point out the racists that dont even live in Jackson, questioning racism after the video literally spent 20 minutes explaining why. Its not racism. These people can vote to raise taxes to fix the problem themselves just like every city in America. Its not a national problem. Its not a State problem either. Boo hoo. You can move to be my beighbor, but you will PAY for the infrastructure for clean water and we do not have any low income affordable vouchers for high water bills.
