Several has asked about field shows. The history: Band was at one point an all inclusive class in the school district and the band competed in both street and field. The school board/district admin. voted to remove marching band from the curriculum. This was opposed by every band director in the district at that time and the directors made several attempts to reverse that decision all to no avail. This pushed all marching rehearsals to after or before school and essentially made the marching bands clubs. 'Mr. Campbell the Greater' met with students and parents and explained what it would take, for rehearsals and gigs, for the band to still do field and street, just field, or just street. It was almost unanimous that the band just focus on street due to the amount of time it would take for field shows. So, the "club" met for band camp, where I was privileged to be a part of the staff, and after school to rehearse. When jazz and concert captions were included, these ensembles were able to use class time to prepare as they are not 'marching' groups. ( LOL ) I hope that history lesson helps. -"Mr. Campbell the Lesser"
I was a three year member of the MM100 (74-77) under band director Mike Selleck. All our competition knew who the Mighty 100 were and we won several parade sweepstakes over those years. It is disheartening to see how the band program has floundered in recent years and there are many factors which caused it. However, they have a great band director who came from Livingston H.S. and if anybody can turn that program around, he can!
I believe that was the Merced Marching 100 under the direction of Greg Christiansen (current GV band director) who took the band to the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1990 and now the Cardinal Regime on 01-01-2009.
geez, the memories are so distant now. I was in the MM100 from 1985 - 1989. I think we were more like 160 + members back then. That was the time that the change from Selleck to Christensen (now with golden valley). I don't remember ever loosing street competitions then. However, we started competing heavily in field with the big guys like Clovis West, Beyer, and James Logan at the time. It was very humbling time but well worth the experience!!!!
Wow, Fairfield looked as great as it is now, which is awesome! I was just going through all these parade competitions and I was in whoa, because my school did this song, Carry On, for parade too last season.
I can only speculate as to the origin of the name "Marching 100" although we routinely marched 100 band members including our letter carriers and the "Seven Darlings" Majorette team. I remeber going up against the Scarlet Brigade and Super Band in Santa Cruz winning some and losing some! It is cetiainly a time in my life I will never forget!
Feild Show had never been our thing were in fact a street band but starting this 09-10 season(Mr. Taylor's final season as our director) for the first time in Scarlet Brigade history we did feild show and I believe that with the right effort and our new director(Mr. Gupta) we will rock feild show as we have everything else...though it would be awesome to get bace to our 160+ days...
This was my senior year. I was in colorguard :) We never did field because field show sucks lol. It was my understanding that Mr. Campbell didnt care for field but i dont know, and we had our hands full kicking butt on the stree :) Really. I dont know where we would have had time to practice field.
Nice! Thanks for posting this. Nice to hear another band play this march. Golden Valley also plays this march so well this year.
1 year after I was with the band (94 - 98). RIP Mr C.
