I don't think the the Pi 5 is a replacement for a Chromebook, or it has to be a very old Chromebook, like my Samsung Chromebook Plus with Rockchip RK3399. The Pi 5 only has hardware video decoding for h265, not for VP9. That means that RUclips playback will be limited on the Pi 5.

Is there a mini touchscreen for the pi 5? Never had one so kinda new to this but i have one coming, tried to pre-order but was having issues placing order and wouldn't have been here till late February anyways. Sucks I had to fork over 150.00 from ebay. Oh well. Hope it's worth it, been wanting a pi for quite awhile now and have been waiting for the next gen, sure i can do something cool with it. Kali.

I live without AC and my screens are 1080p at best. The Pi5's improved power and cooling will serve me very well. Linux video rentals are often limited to Standard Definition by Amazon or RUclips. I expect the Pi5 will serve my modest video and general computing needs very well. BTW the Chromium or Thorium open source versions of Google Chrome do better than Firefox on my Pi4s. The 8GB ram Pi4s and the Pi 400 run at 1.8 Ghz, stock. The original Pi4s with 4gig or less ram run at 1.5 Ghz, stock. I lost telephone and internet service for several days. Pi4s do not have the Pi5's battery backed up clock. My Pi4's clocks were all over the place, without access to the Internet. It showed me how nice the Pi5's clock chip would be. Installing a fan on a Pi4 is also just a bit more fiddlely, without a fan connector. Pi4 fans run off the GPIO pins, so you have to count pins and double check they are right.

Do you think the remote PC experience is good with the raspberry pi? I want to build a personal gaming server.

Hi Mike, I have been wondering about all this Raspberry Pi stuff I have been hearing about for years. I have been thinking about building a Pi thing for audio such as a streamer for a long time, but the whole idea scares me. I know nothing about programing and such. I just saw your previous video on building your streamer and it doesn't look that scary now. One just plugs this and that in and struggles with the software sadly, but after that it is done. That said, I don't like that screen. It is a great idea and I would want something like it, but without all the glitches and function problems. I would not know the difference between Raspberry versions if you beat them into me.
As for a Raspberry Pi replacing my desktop PC, no chance of that. My desktop is literally a behemoth of power and speed, it is ridiculous and doesn't even have the most powerful and latest components in it. (Fully boots in 9 seconds, takes full advantage of cable internet speeds, etc.)
That said though I would like a streamer like the old Logitech Squeezebox that I can hook directly into my system without dealing with Bluetooth.
My Chromebook died several months ago. I still have my Android tablet, but it doesn't do audio stuff at all. I rarely use it except for setting up Alexa crap.
As for Teamgroup products: I just got a couple of 256GB USB 3.1/2 sticks from them and they work very well. I have not tried any other products from them. Perhaps the unit you got just slipped through. I would think they would replace it (or Amazon will, if you got it from there).

Nice video! Of course it would have been faster if you had been using the PCIe feature with an M.2 drive, rather than a 2.5" SSD and the USB 3 connection. The USB throttles the throughput to be no better than a Pi 4.
I like the case. Pair that with a 52Pi Ice Tower Plus fan for a complete steampunk look!

Given all the recent media attention for bitcoin and it’s price spike, i’d love to see you use the PI 5 To build several different bitcoin nodes using the various software options available (cloud9, citadel - now has a new name, bitcoin core on something like desbian) and even a bitcoin miner on a raspberry pi 4 or 5 using cgminer and a couple USB miners with ASIC chips. Pulling this all together would be incredible. Especially since we can now use a Pineberry top or bottom hat to Support an NVME drive. I would owe you one if you produced this!!!

I have just gotten on board with the raspberry pi 5, and your wasting your time with ssd and a usb connection. I feel the best way is to run your tests again using an NVME M.2 hat and a pcie connection. With this setup and the config changes advised by Jeff geeling, my disk read is a blistering 754.66 MB (not Mb) /second. Disk writes are 439MB /sec and overall the damn is pretty darn snappy performance wise.

Just get a previously owned S series Samsung phone and run Dex on it. With a USB dongle you can hook it up to a monitor with HDMI a keyboard and ethernet and power in. Lots of wires I will admit. But that immediately works. If you are trying to turn a Pi 5 into a desktop, chances are the pins are not what you are going for. By the time, you get a case, a power supply, a....and a ... and a there's a current multitude of Intel and AMD small form factor computers out there getting close in price. Which you can run Linux on, or Windows if you choose.
I yawn at power consumption being a decent reason.

I find the desktop performance of the PI 5 so odd. On paper it should be about as powerful as a few year old flagship Smartphone, somewhere in between a Galaxy S9 and S10 but in practice everything feels slow, especially on my 4K screen it feels like I have a huge input delay when scrolling or flicking through the UI. I'm not sure if this is for the 100th time the GPU drivers not working 100%. Also the YT homepage on chromium takes ages.
But then again, when you run artificial benchmarks you get really good numbers and if I do stuff like compile code via remote desktop things are right where I expect them to be.

Can you comfortably replace your PC with a Pi?? Not just a no and a yes but a straight up hell no. Raspian OS is a mess at the moment with the introduction of Wayland,Chromium hasnt worked right in at least three updates with no efforts spent to fix it and that is on Manjaro as well. I wont waste a single dollar on a new Pi. Going for the mini PC route. I know that will work out far better than the Pi route.

I have a much faster computer than a pi, and loading snaps lags. Same with flatpak. You can also squeeze a little more life out of it by using Cinnamon or MATE as a desktop environment, because they're a little less resource-intensive. Cinnamon looks like Windows XP, sort of.... and MATE looks like Windows 95. Cinnamon is the easier of the two for newbies in terms of knowing how to add desktop icons, etc.

Yeah, we need a AMD Threadripper as a bare minimum to run a bog standard desktop and browse RUclips and Facebook.
    NO!
Hell, I run 2015 MacBook Pros with OpenCore and MacOS Sonoma. Same with a 2012 MacBook Pro that runs Zorin Linux. I have three RPi 4b's that run full desktops and office applications fine. I even can cut some HD videos on them. You don't need an M3 silicon to run a desktop.
Yes, the RPi can "only" run 1080p youtube videos, 4k isn't going to do. But, frankly, most youtube content is so bad that 720p would be too good.

First go to your pi5 connect it to Ethernet, then go to your router and set it as high priority, then reboot your pi 5, then launch chromium not Firefox, and set RUclips video quality to 480p, 720p or 1080p depending on your internet speed. Enjoy !! You are welcome !!?
