Yeah, I'm overkill. Lol I have two PCs hooked up each. One windows PC, one Linux. The windows one in the living room, it's an emulation/gaming PC. The Linux one? A Steam Deck console type PC. 😊. Loaded with emulators, too. The bedroom one? A home theater/living room gaming style PC but the Linux one is an older retro gaming PC loaded with retro games with batocera.
Here's an audio tip - if you've connected the HTPC to a Dolby Atmos soundbar or receiver setup through HDMI, install the Dolby Access app and enable the home theatre setting. This will properly pass through uncompressed / unconverted Atmos audio.
I know it’s 6 months later but I had this video playing as I have a HTPC and I was simply looking for SW ideas when @5:05 happened. Man when you said “You haven’t turned on this computer for 10 minutes.” I fell out laughing. It’s so true. I had my computer start a sw update WHILE I was playing the game. Just restarted. So I felt that. Thank you for the info and the laugh.
Bit late to reply to this but i use a trackpad/keyboard all in one from amazon, Great keyboard for what its used for and nice having the track pad attached to save the lost the mouse moment lol
I'm a retiree and my PC is my entire entertainment system. I don't watch tv or movies, though I do have Netflix (mostly for everyone else). I have what I consider a mid-range PC. i7-12700k/3080/32gb 3370 ddr4/2tb NVMe What really gets my juice flowing is the sound system attached to this rig. So, PC>Emotiva xda-2 balanced preamp/DAC>NAD 208 thx(425wpc @4ohms)>aDs 910 loudspeakers (built and used in the mid-70s as studio mains) 910 specs> 4ohms/28htz-25khtz/93db (efficient!) and dual 12" subs (SVS and Hsu Research). This is the best-sounding system I've ever heard. I also have an Emotiva a-100 power amp for headphones, with an array of relatively inexpensive phones, like the HD6xx, Hifiman 4xx and 5xx, Emotiva phones, Monolith 1060c, Meze Noirs, etc ( @ $200 or so )
I run Winamp just for Milk Drop 2 in my guest house setup. I've got a few Technics sl1200 turntables, Pioneer xdj's, and a Rane rotary mixer back there for playing music. I've got three old Dell 1680 x 1050 monitors placed horizontally stacked vertically with milk drop 2 using the mic as a line in. I'll sit there and watch it for hours lol
I’m a nvidia shield owner but i would like a more powerful all around option. This could be it. Would be great If you could turn off/on a mini pc as easy as an android box
I have been thinking doing something similar. This definitely has helped me make a decision about buying one and getting all of the apps you mention. Thanks for the great idea
I'm running Manjaro XFCE on my HTPC, Kodi, makemkv, emulators, etc all there. The install is super lean, boots in 3 seconds. Microsoft's All-in-One Media Keyboard to control everything from the couch.
My living room PC has a Ryzen 3600, 32gb of ram, and an 5700xt. I'm using the Sama micro ATX case. I love it and will put my 3080 in it when I upgrade the main rig.
I love this topic. I'm on my third htpc. This one is a custom built pc running Windows 10 Pro. Kodi is my main media app but I hardly ever fire it up anymore. I mostly just watch youtube with a browser these days. I like to record OTA TV, mostly for sports. Since MS canceled Windows Media Center, I'm using NextPVR, which isn't nearly as good. But this is a feature I care less and less about lately. I'm due for an upgrade. Since many games now run on Linux with Steam, I was thinking my next htpc would run Linux. I'd be interested to hear why you chose Windows over Linux. P.S. I lived without good audio for years. I recently scored a nice AV receiver at a thrift store for 10 bucks. You cannot overstate the importance of good audio with an htpc!
I use an Optiplex 5000 small form factor PC below our LG C2 OLED TV. It's primarily for emulators and indie titles with the frontend of Big Box, using the Colorful skin by Viking from the Launchbox forum.
For a long time, I used my Mac Mini (2014) with Kodi as media center in my living room, but not so long ago I switched to Homatics Box R 4K Plus with... yes Kodi again, as main media center app )) In some ways, Mac with Kodi was a better solution, for example, to play anime encoded in h.264 10-bit, which hardware players can't play, but its CPU was too slow for 4K...
What do you launch apps from? My only issue with a windows based htpc is the fact that it just looks like a computer desktop when you’re not doing anything.
I’ve got an iBuyPower Prebuilt that I bought back in 2020 when it cost over a grand to get an RTX 3070. Avoided those prices by just purchasing an entire system. It’s got an i7-10700f, that RTX 3070 I mentioned, and 32gb’s of ram. I run that PC on a desk with a dual monitor setup, and from that PC on said desk, I run a long HDMI 2.0 cable into my LG C2 65” there in the living room. When I’m on the couch, I use a Logitech K400 to control everything. The audio runs from the TV, to an optical cable into my Yamaha receiver and it’s respective 5.1 surround system. It’s great.
Loving the content lately! I own an LG C2. The webOS is Linux-based with GNU laws incorporated within the terms and agreements (I know know smart-tv), but its not too bloated. I plan to build a second PC for my living room later this year, was considering buying a steam deck too, but the Geekom is pretty slick!
I'm using my Steam Deck + Dock. Honestly, it's really buggy sometimes, getting stuff to work. Especially Emulators and switchign resolution on the fly if you dock and undock it. But being able to configure a controller with custom hotkeys is AMAZING. I just have a simple browser and have bound ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab to the shoulder buttons, so i can just switch between tabs of shows I'm currently watching. I think for the price it's a really good solution if you can handle a bit of troubleshooting.
the only thing i would add to this build would be the front end of playnite. it will give you a console like interface for your games and you can add your media services to.
I use an old gaming rig (6700k with a 5600XT), it's an ATX build but luckily I can fit it in, makes a nice base for my PS5. I put on my standard gaming PC windows software set, including steam and a bunch of games installed that I think I'm likely to play on TV with people like Pacman Battle Royale, fighting games etc... 99.5% of the time I just use it to watch youtube though.
Good discussion on the high level. As a Linux user I smiled at the comment that we know it all. I would say we like messing in the low level more, but it is all good. Lol. Thanks for the video. I am a former plex user that is looking to setup a HTPC with an alternative to PLEX. So you comment on Plex was the most useful for this know it all. Haha. Have a great one!
I love my media PC, but I don't like having to navigate the standard system UI to use it. I want a media center Ui that I can open up my apps and websites within - any suggestions if such things exist
Like I want a media server and a front end for roms but it's gotta be controlled with a remote and an Xbox controller. I'm not gonna have a knm for it. Only at initial setup.
Glad I got a Sen Pi. I had to buy it for the pun if nothing else. Haven't even bought an SD card as I have bigger fires to put out but I'll try out Batocera on it at some point. I like these little tiny machines. That MinisForum one you showed off a while back looked surprisingly capable.
Having issues getting an external dvd drive to play dvds in windows 11. Have tried two different ones with same result. Windows will read the dvd but VLC will not play the DVD. Any suggestions?
Does anybody know what shader is used for the shadowrun part in this video? I love the fact that the 'crt' is kind of reflected on the border of the 'tv'.
Could you please make a recommendation/roundup/review of some lap boards for couch based or lounge room gaming? I’d love to break away from my SmartTV and XSX/PS5 but finding a comfortable lap board setup is what has been holding me back!
I wanted to see what kind of peripherals you use to relax. I mean, doubt you use a traditional keyboard for example. or a mouse while sitting on your couch.
I remember years ago when I first got PS3 Media server that blew my mind because I could wirelessly watching shows from my desktop in my office next to me over wifi streamed to the ps3. This ultimately is what conditioned me for binge watching shows. I'm still the same way, I feel like smart TVs are CAPABLE but for a nerd like me it holds you back and is slow, the fact that every TV has it built in should tell you that it's cheap lol. Smart TVs are going to work for like 90+% of the population and most people would be like why in the world would you hook a computer up to your tv when it already has smart tv capabilities?! lol
Mine is quite simple. I have 3 PC's and the file server is in the other room. So, through Windows Media player I shared the files so my Sony Blu-Ray player can play them. It plays about 99% of all my files which is around 1000+ movies and all my music files. I used to just use a monitor as my "TV", but I finally broke down last year and got a Sony X85J. Only reason I got it was the pixel pitch is that of a monitor now a days. I waited years for that. More like a decade+ since I've been using this method since the PS3. For me it's easy and no 3rd party software to get it running. Just WMP
I use a Chromebox . It seems really good for surfing around listening to music but I can't run apps on it. All right seems very limited will watch your talking about work better
I mainly run debian based linux on my laptop, and I'm happy with it, but I haven't like the changes with roku having forced arbitration. So I been looking for a replacement and how back to traditional dvd player to play blue Ray's and pirated dvds.
Some generic thing called "jelly comb" that I got on alixpress. It works... the space bar is trash... but it's good enough to launch games and open movies... I should upgrade.
I have a PC in my living with a Phenom II x6 and a GTX 1060 (3GB variant). I use it for emulation and for PC games that can be played with a controller.
I still have an old Sony 40W4000 with an i3 Gen 4 low voltage in my living room PC with 16GB of RAM and using internal CPU graphics. I have plex on it and Firefox to watch youtube and that's it. I don't play on my TV, this is just a setup to watch something cool when we eat. Honestly if I have to upgrade it at some point, I'll take a mini PC like you have in your video that would last me a long time and would take much less space under the TV.
Nice video Tek, also- Do you happen to know of a way to bring back the windows 10 swipe menu options? like swipe right for notification center, swipe left for the windows overview (windows + tab on keyboard)
The Geekom AS6 looks quite interesting. From what I can see, it can play most games in 1080p at acceptable frame rates. Could work well as a living room games console.
Mine is a two piece system, ive got an X99 i7 5960X with a GTX 1080 and 3 18Tb hard drives in a Corsair 750D as my Plex server. The media center is an ITX build with an i7 7700K and a Star Wars edition Titan Xp in an NZXT H210i. I also have my main gaming build connected to my TV as well, but I never actually use it, I have a 38 inch ultrawide LG gaming monitor, I originally thought I might want to game on the TV, Hence the effort to hook my main rig up to it in addition to my media center build, but I never do. I also have an original old school windows media center remote hooked up that fully functions... the only problem ive found is with the pause function if I am using PlexAMP, thats literally the only problem ive found. The Titan is overkill, but Craigslist Seattle would blow most peoples minds... in a world in which I get cards like that for $100 I figured why not? I actually wanted to use my 1080 Ti, but it did not quite fit right with a 240 rad installed
Ah, that's actually good feedback. I'm trying this new thing where I make the music louder but pan it 30% in one direction... and the voice 30% in the other. It works well for me with headphones, but maybe not with speakers.
@@Mrhorribubble That makes more sense. Your initial comment came off as a put down. But context matters! 😆 I didn’t have any problem with it personally, but I watched the video on a iphone.
I’ve been in the process of building my own tv console box for awhile now. Just have a case and processor at the moment. I’m using a AMD 5700G and will likely pick up a board like the Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX sometime soon. I am tentatively planning to install the linux retro gaming based ChimeraOS but this isn’t something I’ve used before. My main goal with this system is retro console gaming and lighter modern affairs like metroidvanias.
I like your music.....Got CD's? Im an album collector. As far as my media setup, I have an old Dell Optiplex 7020 gutted and mounted to a wall behind the TV with bluetooth mini-keyboard. Running a linux distro that supports emulation. The system contains 4 drives. 2 of which are 16TB the other 2 are 12TB. OS runs on a M.2 in the PCI slot. Video, music, etc plays through Kodi. Audio has Milkdrop visiuals installed. Updating is as easy as attaching a USB drive.
I have a second PC which is a micro itx w/5600x and an EVGA 3060. I wanted to be able to use it on my LG c3 65-in TV. And maybe stream from my big PC. It has an 5950x and a 3080 xc3 ultra black. I also have an Nvidia shield TV hooked to the TV. So I could stream from the shield or the micro PC w/3060
Gonna keep an eye on these comments for solutions. I’m streaming my PC via the Steam Link app for the TV. Works OK, not great for games like Rocket League cuz of input lag. My biggest snag is mirroring VR to the TV (Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop) Steam Link tends to not like that.
I still rock my i5-760 on a mini-itx motherboard since 2010, upgraded over the years. Now it has 8GB of DDR2 1866 and 120GB SSD with a 90mm tower cooler which let me clock it to 3.95GHz, paired with low profile GTX 1050 2GB. All in a 5.8L case i designed myself to hold two 2.5" drives and a Dual slot low profile GPU, with a honeycomb mesh walls to let it breath. My main rig is a 5950x with all the tweaks and proper ram But for causal web browsing.. it's almost the same. Other than slight pauses, i don't mind.. i can still play all my movies in 4K HDR 10-bit 4:4:4, with optical audio out used, as apparently the audio bandwidth will push the HDMI on the GTX 1050 past it's limit 😅 I just manually open the movie files like an animal, tried transcoding and media servers for many years.. there's always something. It'll work amazing for months.. maybe years.. then Hits a hard wall on something that you have to do a deep dive on
I got some ptsd watching this and remembering all the stuff I needed to do after getting a new pc/reinstalling windows in the late 90's-early 2000's. Malwarebytes? Nopad+? Old right click menu? Dude, no offense, you do you, but for what on earth would I need any of that on the pc that I use for movies and games?!
How is Planet of Lana overall? Really want to try it. Sounds great. I wish you'd do game reviews, we align on many of them and I'm bored of most new games.
It took me 6.5 hours to beat... it's really pretty and has some amazing scenes. The little critter is awesome. The puzzles are really easy... and the story is very subtle. It's worth it for a one-time experience, but I liked Inside and Another World better.
my couch TV PC setup is like this. its an LG nano cell 49 inch HDMI 2.1 (when the spec was new and real) 120Hz 4k. I run it with a desktop that most importantly HAS A BLUE RAY DRIVE lmao. The main thing that is overkill is how I have 32 gigs of 3600 RAM. I also game on this setup. The GPU is a 3060ti which is basically minimum spec because I need HDMI 2.1 and would not be happy with a regular 3060. Lastly the processor is an i7 9700k not overclocked 8 cores no threading. I use a corsair lapboard and the soundsytem is Logitech Z623 400watt 2.1 non surround
Is it sad that every TV in the house has a PC? More to that, I built each one..... well except the spare room TV box, optiplex with a xeon, but it's about to get swapped out for a ryzen pro 2400g based elitedesk. Living room and bedroom are both R5-5600Gs. What they run is Kodi with NextPVR, got Hauppauge wintv HVR-2250s or 1250s that got to an antenna for local TV and News, storage server in the lab for Kodi. I wouldn't mind a tiny pc like that for the house, but most my gear is either saved up for or nabbed when work tosses it out.
Hello people, I have/had a seagate hard drive streaming drive. It sat next to my lounge PC attached to my flatscreen where I downloaded movies to the PC then transferred to the drive where it was streamed to all the smart TV's. It has bad sectors that need to be recovered. Quoted $800, if anyone knows the program they use let me know. What is a good piece of equipment now that will do the exact same thing. I moved hundreds of DVD's to it and downloaded a heap which were more you can't find.
600+ dollars I could build one for much cheapo then that but I am not sure how it would compare to electricity usage which is why IO actually checked out this video . I will keep search thank you for your time and upload

Wow, that was a great rundown. Thanks.
wow this channel is still around? hasn't been pushed through notifications for me for literally years.
Yeah yt basically blacklisted us
Glad for your video, watched it all and wasn't bored. Learned a lot. Thank you Logan and stay Safe and alive.

Man I wish Microsoft would give us a front end gui for TV use.
They did didn't they? Windows 8.1 ?
Microsoft Media Center!
Exactly what I was looking for!
What keyboard or controller do to you use to navigate your TV PC setup?
Really helpful video!

No need to turn off. You can program your remote to put mini pc to sleep/hibernate. When you’re ready to use mini pc, you can wake with sane remote
I have been thinking doing something similar. This definitely has helped me make a decision about buying one and getting all of the apps you mention.
Thanks for the great idea
I've done the "living room PC" thing since I first got an HDTV. I love PC gaming, but I gotta game from my couch or recliner.
I'm running Manjaro XFCE on my HTPC, Kodi, makemkv, emulators, etc all there. The install is super lean, boots in 3 seconds. Microsoft's All-in-One Media Keyboard to control everything from the couch.

Why use k-lite codocs when using VLC? Dosn't VLC use it's own internal codecs?
I keep coming across your channel when looking for tech stuff. I guess I should probably subscribe at this point. Boom! Done.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Is there an interface that works well with a TV remote mimicking a smart TV experience?
what is this wallpaper? I want it on everything I have.
I love my media PC, but I don't like having to navigate the standard system UI to use it. I want a media center Ui that I can open up my apps and websites within - any suggestions if such things exist
bigbox... It's worth the money. You can launch anything my just games
What is it the game you are playing at 14:07?
Wow, crazy deal on the keys. Decided to buy Win 10 Pro for my mini PC that I'll use for Blue Iris (surveillance app only on Windows, unfortunately).
Have you tried mpv? I replaced Codec packs a while ago with it.
mpv is awesome. I use it as my primary player on my Pop OS system. It handles pretty much every thing except some transport streams (vlc for those).

Look for a dead Corsair K63. Just gut it and build your preference of mech keyboard in the case.
Boom, done.
Hey I would really like to hear your recommendation for a linux living room PC
I wanted to see what kind of peripherals you use to relax. I mean, doubt you use a traditional keyboard for example. or a mouse while sitting on your couch.
This is perfect. I was looking at Roku TVs, but then you get vendor lock in and a lot fewer options.
my sleeper/htpc has my old i7-4790/GTX 1060 combo and it does a good job for anything I'd want to do from the couch

Just WMP
I'd like something like MPC on Linux, but it's hard to get every single feature I need.
You said load!!! Huh huh huh huh huh huh!!!! 🤘😂🤘
You said you don't like smart tv and prefer pc? why?
Is it good for a 7.1 surround sound ? To be connected to an amplifier which is connected to a projector ?
JRiver Media Center (33) running a 120TB library that Serves the home and on the go.
What keyboard \ mouse set up for your htpc
Some generic thing called "jelly comb" that I got on alixpress. It works... the space bar is trash... but it's good enough to launch games and open movies... I should upgrade.
I have a PC in need of an upgrade, a PS4 hooked up to one TV and a Mi Box hooked up to another
I have a PC in my living with a Phenom II x6 and a GTX 1060 (3GB variant).
Bro has the coziest home
Nice video Tek, also- Do you happen to know of a way to bring back the windows 10 swipe menu options? like swipe right for notification center, swipe left for the windows overview (windows + tab on keyboard)
my htpc/living room pc is a ryzen 7 3700x, 32gb, ram and an old 1070 hybrid. I mostly play racing games in the living room.
I actually wanted to use my 1080 Ti, but it did not quite fit right with a 240 rad installed
the background music was VERY off-putting
You realize he is the musician that created it, right?
Your attitude is off-putting
@@StariusPrime right ? I didn't say it was bad or anything. the volume of it was just too close to the volume of his voice and it was off putting
I didn’t have any problem with it personally, but I watched the video on a iphone.
would AMD Ryzen™ 7 6800H version still be enough to play that kind of games u recomended?
My living room PC is a MacMini. It runs Ventura on an unsupported Mac. It also boots windows 11 🤷♂️ but it’s just a Mac mini
I have a Beelink GTR7 on order. Can’t wait to get some emulation and AAA gaming on the go 👌
I’ve been in the process of building my own tv console box for awhile now.
"Make sure you create a Restore Point." 😂🤣
Sure buddy 😂
Music is so distracting!
Do you play background music when you're having a face to face conversation?
Vary much with you on the PC connected to a TV rather than the "smart" TV and dig Winamp. Best global shortcuts of ANY audio player👍
Is this guy a vampire????
I have a second PC which is a micro itx w/5600x and an EVGA 3060. I wanted to be able to use it on my LG c3 65-in TV. And maybe stream from my big PC. It has an 5950x and a 3080 xc3 ultra black. I also have an Nvidia shield TV hooked to the TV. So I could stream from the shield or the micro PC w/3060
I still use winamp!
I just used my old gaming rig which uses a Ryzen 7 1700X & a RX 5500XT as my HTPC.
Other than slight pauses, i don't mind.. i can still play all my movies in 4K HDR 10-bit 4:4:4, with optical audio out used, as apparently the audio bandwidth will push the HDMI on the GTX 1050 past it's limit 😅
I just manually open the movie files like an animal, tried transcoding and media servers for many years.. there's always something.
@@teksyndicate Thanks man, I'll pick it up. Sick of modern AAA gaming BS.
how does this deal with x265 havec 10bit local encoding and just vlc without using a third party like plex or jellyfin.
Broooooo I mustve been living under a rock because when did you get long hair?
Is the VPN N America based? Otherwise, I have to make arrangements with my bank to use my card.
Yeah, it's in Colorado.
my couch TV PC setup is like this. its an LG nano cell 49 inch HDMI 2.1 (when the spec was new and real) 120Hz 4k.
