I loved finding this video. We moved to Newbury Park in 1960. I went to Timber Elementary where we would ring a bell in the tower for recess. We moved to T.O. in 1967 where I lived until 1980 (GO Lancers !) Wow does this bring back the memories, talk about the good ole days ! Thank God for people like Ed that had the foresight to document the History of our beloved Conejo Valley, Thanks Ed.
There's a profound loneliness I feel when I think back to the many great memories I have from my childhood growing up in this town which I was born. They echo in my mind as I look at these wonderful moments of a home that I long for, lost in time, to which I can never return.
Moved to To in 1960 when 10. Went to Timber School in Newbury Park, rode my horse in Conejo Valley Day parades, La Reina Girls Catholic HS then TO HS. Watched the making of Gunsmoke, Rawhide and westerns, one with Henry Fonda. Had first son in TO hospital and second son at Los Robles hospital. Spent many Saturday nights at the Rec Center with Kasey Kasem and the bands he brought for great dancing time! It was the best place for a wholesome upbringing. Thank you so much for the memories!
I enjoyed the history you provided of Thousand Oaks. I lived there in the 70"s and my parents opened the business Conejo Trophies. I believe today it's called Conejo Awards. I left TO in 1979 and joined the Navy. Today I live in Florida, but I still have fond memories of Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park.
I moved to Thousand Oaks in 1963; I feel blessed to have seen TO when it was like this. A better place to grow up would be hard to find. Thanks for this, Ed. This is how I always want to remember it.
I really enjoyed watching this great historical video. I have lived in this area since 1966 and it has brought back may memories. Thank you so much Ed for doing such a wonderful job preserving our piece of history.
Skyler Contreras If you lived here starting in 1957 like I did, you'd HATE it now! Every time I drive down from Oregon and cruise through, I can't believe how it's changed, and for the worst! The traffic is incredible! People drive very rudely and when they see my Oregon plate, look at me like I'm from Mars. It's like, "Why are you driving normal! That's not how we drive here!" not realizing back in the day... I graduated TOHS in 1973, went to Waverly, Glenwood, St. Pascals and Glenwood (again) before that. Dad moved us to Hayward for 3 years (Navy) 1960, 61 & 62 then back to the (same) house he built himself on the corner of Montgomery Road and Briar Cliff back in 1956. We later could ride our mini and dirt bikes anywhere in T.O. from the field/back yard which is now Ralphs and other stores. Man, the bicycle hikes! From Montgomery Road, up Moorpark Road, through Santa Rosa Valley, through Camarillo, past Camarillo State Hospital, up the back way (Potrero [sic] Road) into Newbury Park and back to T.O. Some to Simi Valley via Moorpark. with Cory Meade. I rode my bike from T.O. to Somis and back, alone, at least twice to visit my oldest sister, Roseanne. If anyone is interested in reading my book about dirt bike riding the Conejo Valley and the Mojave Desert, I'll send it online from: daviddaveinternational@gmail.com (David Fruhling) Lots of vintage pictures, some found nowhere else but in my (unpublished) book. Anyone remembering me (or not) feel free to write me. Now a retired mechanic after 41 years. GO LANCERS! (and waverly warriors)
I lived in Thousand Oaks from 1979-1995. Was a wonderful place to grow up. I wish it hadn't changed so much and become so expensive. They removed so many of the landmarks I grew up with. No more Dupars, Conejo Bowl, Howard Johnson's, etc. Would still buy a house there if I could afford it, just so I could come visit when I felt like going home.
The Galati family came by covered wagon from New York, & settled in T.O. in early 60`s.. They opened an Italian restaurant on T.O. blvd. @ Rancho, called the Villa Roma....I left T.O. in 1991, for Las Vegas, where I now sweat....
Oh I sorry to hear this man passed. I was born in Orange Ca,and I always love to hear about the old days of Cali. I grew up in Lake Arrowhead. I hope the Republicians help save Cali

My grandparents moved to TO in 1948 and my family moved in 1957. Paradise lost. Michael Keown

This is fascinating, especially if you are from the Conejo Valley! My dad and Ed Lawrence were photographer buddies. Ed's a good guy. Enjoy!
This is fantastic. Thank you Mr. Lawrence.
As a newcomer to Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Valley I really appreciate these great photographs and Ed's historical perspective.

Gas in 65 only 32 cents a gallon. Quite a hike...now.
If I had a dollar for every time a fire destroyed a movie set or another piece of history in so cal I could've quit my job years ago
