Great question. Emotions and feelings are power. And ego wields great power over our feelings. Those who have less ego and more curiosity to learn will see the stronger argument win, because they ignore feeling and emotion in favor of calm reason.
They don't and never will with people that have half a brain cell. Individuals debating fully against each other that can counter will never prevail coming from emotion. Yes, the fundamental question is whether the glass started out empty or started out full. Many seem to think wealth magically and almost inevitably appears (glass started out full) and are indignant that more doesn't appear. Others realize that it takes enormous effort and sacrifice to make a few drops appear (glass started out empty) and even more to overcome other's desire to confiscate more than they contribute. Extremes are never positive nor accurate. There are plenty of things that need improvement, and there are more than plenty that are fine the way they are. If we stop bickering and rather start concentrating on the tasks at hand, we can be even better off than we are now, and help others get there too.
@EGarrett01 No one's arguing that. But that type of thinking makes people complacent. People need to ALWAYS be critical of government, whether things are good or bad. That is the beauty of this country, we CAN criticize the government. Of course it could be worse, it could always be worse. But it can always be better, too. Instead of thanking our lucky stars we're not North Korean, we should be wary of our own government, so that we never find ourselves in the same (or similar) boat they are in.
@TsugaC I very rarely agree with anyone completely and there is plenty of things he said that I do agree with. But I usually have a problem with the general idea of American exceptionalism. If people think that the country is already exceptional I think it tends to make them think they don't have to work to make it even better. The unfinished pyramid means we are meant to always be improving. It represents the fact that a nation is always unfinished.
How am I a college-educated man pushing 40 who had never heard of Sowell before this week? I have heard and read Friedman of course in college and on the news, but never Sowell. That seems like some sort of crime now.
Sowell's work is based on reality. If there's a writer of political-economics that has rooted all his observations in empirical data, is Thomas Sowell. Basing political decisions that will affect millions of people in an emotional rhetoric is pure demagoguery, is irresponsible and selfish, and brings the kind of results we are seeing in today's world. We need many more people like Sowell.
"To be for generic change is to say, what we have is so bad, that any change is likely to be for the better. Such a pose may make people feel superior to others who find much that is worth preserving in our values, traditions, and institutions. The status quo is never sacrosanct, but its very existence is proof that it is viable, as seductive alternatives may not turn out to be." This describes American politics very well. Everyone wants some kind of big change but no one is willing to take it one step at a time, it's their way or the highway and it ultimately ends up dividing everyone to support the radical, not the realist
Part of growing up is knowing that often the choice is not between good or bad, but bad or worse. Those who complain about whom America backs, ought to think about what replaced them. Was it immoral to back the Shah or Mubarrack or the Czars or Batista? A child will say yes. A grown up will look at what followed and say no.
Video is food for thought. About the discussion. When in college (I have 3 degrees) one of my favorite things to do was to look at the methodology of studies. Usually it sucked. Poor research is rampant. In school you learn one study does not a finding make. It takes a body of research for conclusions. I notice in the Psych. Today article it does not give the title of the study nor the scientific journal where it was published. That is how you tell good reporting from bad. I’m an independent.

Those who wish to live in a socialist country, fine go to one and live there, I will even buy you a one way ticket there, first class, see how you like there. I enjoy living in VA, the colorful past and scenery it has, reading the books of Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams to name a few.Take care Mr Sowell and stay well.
Great mind. Even better expression.
GOD is the reason we are. Great kicking out God IN SCHOOLS IS THE REASON THEY ARE HAVING PROBLREMS
Wow 8 years ago
👍👍
I'm sure you'd lead us into a new age of peace and love. A real utopia.
Wow! Great stuff! Thank you.
How am I a college-educated man pushing 40 who had never heard of Sowell before this week? I have heard and read Friedman of course in college and on the news, but never Sowell. That seems like some sort of crime now.
I know, right? I feel like every school I ever went to owes me a refund and a donation to a charity of my choice.
Same. I just came across him in the last couple weeks.
Very smart man.
The status quo is never sacrosanct, but its very existence is proof that it is viable, as seductive alternatives may not turn out to be."
This describes American politics very well. Everyone wants some kind of big change but no one is willing to take it one step at a time, it's their way or the highway and it ultimately ends up dividing everyone to support the radical, not the realist
gosh hes so effing brilliant
culture wars
i wonder how many people in the US understand culture wars and how to go about approaching such a phenomenon.
Superb!
The chilling truth. The blackest pill.
@EGarrett01 I think anyone who doubts it just needs to stick around for a while...
Hindsight is a mug's game.
"Those who complain about whom America backs"!?
I'm sure Pinochet would thank you for your comment.
That Gigantic IQ running flat out!!! Thomas is a Giant among men😀
Video is food for thought. I’m an independent.
being a conservative means you have an understanding of the world and human nature, being a liberal well it means you have not grown up yet.
