Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London It’s a lovely meal :)

Liquor is basically a parsley sauce. They used to make it with the water from jellied eels but not so much nowadays.

The real liquor was made of stock from Jellied Eels because they were cheap, but it is cheaper to buy fish stock cubes now… Good olde days are going fast… Love to you guys & chicco take care while on your travels ❤

Lovely your able to keep Chico with you. My golden retriever loved everything he shouldn't have, ice lollies the lot, but fresh cream buns were his favourite. 😅😂 Safe travels, bon voyage!!!!

Liquor is a sauce that has parsley in it and is typically served with pie and mash, an east end delicacy.
Apparently it used to be made with the water left over from cooking jellies eels.
Liquor is the type of gravy they put on the pie and mash. Originally whey back... the pie and mash consisted of eels as it was the cheapest filling from the fishermen goin out to get their catch. Then it gradually changed to beef with a special recipe for the liquor ( gravy). It has always been a speciality dish from down South and a favourite for many people 💚

When you said about fire and how dry the Tudor building looked,that’s why the Great Fire of London wiped out so many properties as they were all wooden, the fire could spread easily from building to building. I often wonder how London would look now if most of those buildings were still here. You both look fab, take care of yourselves ❤❤

Welcome to our home town. Lived in a town just outside Colchester for 25 years before packing up and emigrating to Scotland. Our kids still live there and really enjoy the city. Looking forward to getting my sun fix (not a chance here in Scotland lol). Safe trip

OMG, welcome to Essex 👍from one northerner to another. OMG, if I had known you was coming down to Colchester I would have messaged and we could have met for a brew. But yes, the Roman ruins are breathtaking. I don't know how long you are in Colchester for, but on Saturday 14th the Castle is free entry and also Hollytrees Museum. There are plenty of Chinese takeaways, my recommendation is China Garden, Bromely Road. Enjoy your stay in Colchester, lots of love to you both xx
We’ve spent a lot of time at the Ardleigh site, my son and his wife lived in Colchester. Not having been back for a few years, we decided after being with you at Shepton mallot show 2023 we would go back, staying at wheeley was an easy buss ride in. But Dawn spent the rest of the week in Hospital and had surgery 😢 so it was nice to have a look around with your camera ❤

The water tower is known locally as Jumbo.Several renovation projects / redevelopment plans never came to fruition so it remans a disused water tower - built in 1883 and contains 1.2 million red bricks.

Colchester looked stunning as was the weather....some of those buildings looked like the Tudor period...King Henry the 8th time.

Colchester is amazing...it used to be the Capital city of Britain before London in Roman times...Liquor is parsley and Eel juice from stewing but now days stock is used.. Gorgeous Meal
Liquor is hot parsley sauce / gravy served with the pie and mash. Liquor often was made with the stock after cooking the eels. Sure it must taste better than it sounds!

Lisa and Mark there you go: There are three elements to the classic meal: pie, mash and eel liquor. The pies began life as eel pies, but over time the pies were made with minced beef and onion; mashed potatoes speak for themselves; and the liquor is the special part. It is made from an eel gravy and is heavily flavoured parsley sauce. You must put on liberal amounts of salt, vinegar and pepper or chili on there too. They also sell stewed eels as well as the other London classic, jellied eels. You can also buy live eels to take home and cook for yourself, if you are so inclined. First City in AD 49 but oldest recorded town, a lot of the locals still call it town as they did not want City status. (me included) thank you for your visit.
