that actually makes this more of a powerful song when you think about it. the only people she would call her friends would be the Heathers and Veronica, so the majority of the other people in the "lifeboat" are people who like Heather Mac a lot, but she doesn't really know that. it's pretty much what "Me Inside of Me" describes. where it says "that's the curse of popularity" the only people you really know are the other popular kids. everyone else loves you, but you barely know them. sorry for getting so in depth i know your comment was just to point out something you noticed.
Ōkami I think it was more referring to how she’s the most innocent of the bunch. I don’t believe she ever wanted to be with the Heathers, it was just the easiest path, or so she thought. The lifeboat she refers to is meant to symbolise the popular kids. The black ocean could mean the unwanted, unloved kids, or being cast into irrelevance altogether. Everyone’s pushing and fighting to stay on the lifeboat, to stay relevant, to stay in *control.* She’s not friends with any of them. She’s just trying to stay on the lifeboat.
Rosie Low Actually, the ocean is supposed to represent High School and the lifeboat is all of the students. The pushing and fighting is to show how cutthroat their school is. If you remember from “Beautiful”, their entire student body hates everyone else except for the Heathers.
Lyndsey Davis "depth she needs" is so true. Without this song she'd have stayed a shallow, clueless, ditzy follower who hurts people to stay ahead just because that's all she knows how to do. This kind of examines that, and suggests that she was sucked into it early but her conscience was better than that.
This and "Seventeen" are probably some of the deepest and most relatable songs ever to come out of contemporary musical theatre. "Lifeboat" especially captures the horrific anxieties of high school and youth, and as a teenager that struggles with depression and anxiety, I relate to Heather McNamera way more than I'm comfortable with here.
This song literally portrays depression and anxiety so well for something so short! It starts all slow and sad saying "I float in a boat// in a raging black ocean" (the raging black ocean being depression) and then it shows the hopelessness in depression with the lyric "the people smell desperate//we'll sink any minute" and then it hits that aggressive part full of worry and anxiety. Just the aggressiveness in her pitch portrays it perfectly along with that whole stanza! (I cry and get chills every time at this part bc it just hits home and I feel it) and then you get that part "well who made her captain!" Where she's angry bc depression and the way things are makes you so angry! And then right after that is that line "still the weakest must go" where she just sounds so numb and I could honestly write a whole analytical essay on this piece of art but I'll save you all from that and keep it short. It's just a master piece
I'm very thankful to the writer(s) of this song for writing a song that explains the feeling of anxiety (mostly panic attacks, hence the forceful few phrases) on such a level that people who have not experienced this horrible condition first hand, like me and so many others have. I sit down in my corner, and draw while the teacher talks about things I know nothing of, nor will ever care about. A boy shouts at me to stop. Another asks me why I draw so much. I respond with the same answer I've used every time he asks this. The teacher takes my book away. She logs down some negative points. 'Not Using Class Time Correctly', is what it says. Alyssa Caver yes favorite line in the musical also the bathroom be where Veronica says "you want to avoid date rape by signing me up for date rape" to heather mcnamara
Heather McNamara is the best character out of the whole show because her understanding of the school and the people in her generation is the strongest out of all the other characters.
This is my favorite song in the entire musical. It hits really close to home and perfectly sums up how I’ve been feeling inside for most of my teenage years ever since I found out I’m gay (I live in the Middle East, it’s a lot more dangerous to be gay here than in the west). The anxiety, the depression, the fear everything about this song is so familiar. I especially relate to the part “Everyone’s pushing, everyone’s shoving, storms are approaching there’s nowhere to hide, if I say the wrong thing, or I wear the wrong outfit, they’ll throw me right over the side” the storms being the aftermath of my family finding out I’m gay, nowhere to hide meaning I can’t run away from myself and they’ll eventually find out, saying the wrong thing and wearing the wrong outfit symbolizing showing my true gay self in any way, and they’ll throw me right over the side meaning my family will stop caring about me. Ugh this song is just so perfect I almost cry every time I listen to it it just hits so close to home
I honestly think Heather M is innocent. She's a sweetheart. She wants to fit in but is constantly being pressured to stay and fit in with the other Heathers.
I think that like all real people, she isn't completely good or completely bad. In this song we see that she felt like she had to fit in and if she made one wrong move she'd be executed. But she also volunteered Veronica for rape and she participated in the bullying, whether or not she wanted to she did so
i love how when she says “Well who made her captain?” she doesn’t try to be beautiful and she pours emotion in such an ugly way that it’s so powerful and beautiful with no filter
+blondenerd11 Unfortunately, the show closed on August 8th before any instrumental versions could be released. So, until that happens, which I doubt ever will, no.
Okay guys- But In the play she says before this something like "I'm on the bus, thinking to myself 'Oh god I'm on the bus again because all my rides to school are dead'"
“And the captain is pointing. Well who made her captain?” That is soo deep. At first I thought it was just a normal line but then I realized that she is talking about HD just appointing her self to queen bee when HC 💀.
"cinnamon roll" "pure" "protected" if i had a fucking dollar for how many people act like you, i swear its not even unique anymore and im sick of seeing it everywhere lmao
Heather McNamara did nothing wrong 2kFUCKINGFOREVER ~~ *Edit: becuase people are just too stupid to understand a small phrase and I don't wanna repeat myself everytime someone goes "YES SHE DID DO SOMETHING WRONG!!!1!!!111!1!!!!"* Yeah of course H. McNamara's not excused for her faults, but that's still taking the phrase /too/ literally and obviously a character with no flaws or wrong doings is a mary sue which H. McNamara isn't. If you've seen the phrase before, people usually use it toward characters that were mostly dragged into problems, or to express remorse/pity for that said character. The phrase originated from the Tokyo Ghoul fanbase, saying "Kaneki Ken Did Nothing Wrong." The fanbase knows for sure Kaneki has his faults and flaws, but they still use this phrase to express remorse toward him which is what I'm doing with H. McNamara.
Dashie Allheart Saying that it she is not responsible for her actions because she is a follower, is kind of idiotic, dude. She is an awesome and somewhat relatable character, and this is a great song, but she is NOT innocent or free of any wrong doings
Yeah of course she's not excused, but that's still taking the phrase /too/ literally and obviously a character with no flaws or wrong doings is a mary sue which H. McNamara isn't. I love how the entirely of the musical is acid humor and poking fun of tragedies, upper beat and aggressive, making the deaths feel silly and laughing of things like "I was just having my period"... And then comes "Lifeboat", a sad, hurt and deep song about loneliness and painful sadness. That hits really REALLY deep in the feelings. It's an amazing and brilliant contrast.
Right but Gretchen would be with Heather d 😭😭 I don't really think they're alike but Peggy and heather m are more like Karen and these groups are usually 3 😭😭
This whole song (even with being 1:38 seconds long). Is (In my opinion) the most powerful song in the musical. As it represents how so many teens feel daily when struggling with depression and anxiety. And that they could include this song in a musical makes me really happy. Especially with how Heather is portrayed as head cheerleader when she's feeling like this throughout a lot of the musical it really makes it come off like more a deep and meaningful (and necessary) song
I like how in the beginning the music is calm, like calm still water. Then in the middle Heather M's. voice gets loud and powerful. She also mentions that storms are approaching. When you combine that loud and powerful phrase with the mention of storms it's sort of like you are actually in the storm. Then at the end it's calm again, meaning that the water has calmed down. I would also like to mention that I see in my point of view. Heather M. Points out " If I say the wrong thing... " In the musical Heather green ( I can't remember the last name ) gives Heather M. A disappointed look. Which gave Heather M. The signal that she is no longer friends with Heathe green. ( still can't remember the name ) When Heather M. Knew " The weekest must go.. " and in the whole Heather's group ( from what I saw ) she was the kindest and when people see kindness they see weakness. So what I think was that Heather M. Found out she was to kind and knew she must go.
When I was listening to this song for the first time, I thought it was a calm sad song. So I put it to a high volume on my PC with my headphones on, I was doing homework. When it went ‘Everyone’s pushing.’ I remember nearly falling out of my chair lmao. My favourite song now.
i love the line "who made her captain" because shes not necessarily talking about chandler. shes talking about duke. showing that mcnamara worked hard and deserves to be the "leader" also i rlly like how in blue reprise she follows the crowd showing that shed rather go with the crowd and not be laughed at rather than be herself and side with veronica
See, I actually wondered if this song alluded to "Moby Dick" at all. A lot of the themes discussed in the song mirror ideas discussed in the book. Plus they're always talking about how that book means they were going to kill themselves. "Eskimo!" right?!?
+ASliceofKai I've always thought so. The book doesn't always mean they're going to kill themselves, but it heralds something bad. Chandler's death, Duke's downfall, and Veronica's supposed suicide. I'm pretty sure I'm missing an earlier reference and I can't remember if Martha mentioned it before she jumped, but...you get what I mean. It's supposed to show that things are taking a turn for the worse, not necessarily suicide, and I feel like Lifeboat is a reference to the book itself since there wasn't a way to include it
Musical Theater songs where a character is having a mental breakdown: Lifeboat (Heathers) Burn (Hamilton) Home (BeetleJuice) Words Fail (Dear Evan Hansen) Michael in the Bathroom (Be More Chill) Breathe (In the Hights) (Add more if you want)
Lonely Room from “Oklahoma!” Betrayed from “The Producers” Not Getting Married Today from “Company” Side by Side by Side also from “Company” (or in the version with Raul Esparza, Side by Side by Side and What Would We Do Without You?) The Ladies Who Lunch also *also* from Company Being Alive also *also* a l s o from “Company” Could I Leave You from “Follies” (maybe? partially?) When He Sees Me from “Waitress” (technically, though more so a movie musical) No Pressure from “Encanto” Glitter and Be Gay from “Candide” The Dog Song from “Sunday in the Park With George” 30/90 from “tick… tick… BOOM!” Note: There is good reason why I mentioned Company (written by Stephen Sondheim) four times. It’s really good! I mean so good you should watch it. Like right now. I demand you. Please. (The version I mentioned is really good for a starter) Also watch like literally everything else cause you are doing yourself is disfavor by not watching these old but gold of musical theatre! Of course, the older ones such as Oklahoma! (1940s) will be quite different (slower in pace and more Broadway glitzy) and kinda concerning to a modern viewer (though that would be most of the world back then). Still, there’s a reason why these shows are great!
When I looked into the song and figured out its meaning, I nearly cried. Think about it. The boat is the group that she’s in, And the people in the boat are Veronica and Heather Duke. What she’s saying is that if she does anything wrong they’ll kick her out of the group. Which is fueling her Anxiety and Depression. This entire song is her suicide note and her final statement. This is why I cried at this point.
Hits different when you have new headphones on and get lost in the comments so you forget your listening to music and then heather m starts shouting EVERYONES PUSHING EVERYONES FIGHTING
this song is probably the most brilliant song i've ever heard. its so deep when you really hear the lyrics and her portrayal is gorgeous. if you listen closely you can hear her quiver. it shows the true depth of a person, no matter how confident they seem outside. it shows the amount of anxiety people suffer through everyday situations. it shows even the cruelest of people have a battle on the inside. heathers needs more recognition tbh
This song is so deep and beautiful. While I don't have the exact same experience, I still feel so connected. In theatre, you are constantly worried about being what THEY want you to be. And if you aren't, your done. So I don't have the same issues, it's very similar to how I feel sometimes. Also, Elle is just amazing, so I'm obsessed with this song for that reason too
"Let's have a song about hippie love and accepting flaws, with a joke about a woman faking orgasms!" "Yeah, right after it we can have a depressed girl talk about how she's considering suicide!"
Kind if cool how she comes from Bring it On as Eva, a protagonistic head cheerleader who sings a solo called "Killer Instinct". Where as Heather Mc is a head cheerleader who is fairly protagonistic in the first act and a half before the solo that she sings about killing herself and both are usually wearing a specific colour (Red or Yellow). I guess the only difference is the ages (Eva being 15 and Mc being 17), and the fact that Eva is very smart and Mc is very dumb.
Sims Diva Maybe that wasn't the right thing to say on my part. She isn't exactly "very dumb" but she isn't the brightest light in the shop either. Lets just say she's average.
You know it's really weird how for the longest time I had mentally imagined/adapted this song so differently to people I know and I don't know if it's because of the fact I hadn't watched the musical in such a long while but I always saw the lifeboat full of people she knew more as the 'Escape' as opposed to the boat/ship which was being sunk metaphorically? I'd see it that she'd see this lifeboat filled with people, her friends who have died, maybe others she knew who also passed away and she's just stuck in grievance and wanting to join them on the lifeboat as opposed to being on the original ship filled with (The Captain) Heather Duke and many other passengers on board; I always saw it that she idolised the 'Lifeboat' because of the fact she was suicidal and simply wanted to see her friends and those she lost again AS WELL AS being picked on for that by those alive around her making her simply want to just get off the ship whether she reaches the lifeboat or not, she just wants to be thrown off the side of the ship and drown - never to fall victim again of Heather Duke. It's kind of sad because it feels she idolises the lifeboat but at the same time feels unworthy to be on it.
The amazing and sad thing about heathers is that even though the events are overly dramatic, the emotions (anxiety, depression, cynicism, etc...) are so accurate to high schoolers. The pain is so relatable
compared to everyone else's interpretations i feel real dumb abt mine lol, i think i was too literal. i like everyone else's interpretations though! i interpreted this song as just her talking about, like, the people around her are dying and getting hurt, and she feels powerless to stop it. she worries she'll be the next person to go, to be tipped over the edge, and she's terrified of it. when i hear "the tiniest lifeboat, full of people i know," i think of like. she's in this boat, full of people she knows (duh), and slowly they're dropping off, dying, the weakest are disappearing and she's scared because she thought they were the strongest. she mentions that heather chandler appeared to be so put-together, and then she "killed herself," and that worries her, because she thought heather was so much stronger and better off than her and turned out that wasn't true. they weren't the strongest, and now she worries, because she knows she can never be stronger than they were. she knows she can never be more put-together than they were. if they were people she looked up to, and they all killed themselves, what does that mean for her? is she next? she's thinking about it, because she feels like there's no hope for _her_ if there was no hope for _them._ and when the captain points at her, telling her she's the weakest, the next one to go, it's her own self-doubt and hatred, and her terrible peers too, confirming her worst fears for her. that she's not strong enough to survive.
Oh, I dunno... Maybe because it wants to capture how cutthroat high school nature is among students and show how damaging peer pressure can be? I mean, other plays aren't definitely dark. Absolutely not. That's just absurd.
"If I say the wrong thing or I wear the wrong outfit, they'll throw me right over the side" "You're wearing sweatpants...it's Monday....you can't sit with us!"
"Well who made her captain?" Is my favorite line

Wow I'm sorry for what you lived ):
I'm sorry to hear about that I hope you feel better
hope you're doing good nowadays mate
I hope you'll be okay friend and I hope you're doing well now
I honestly think Heather M is innocent. She's a sweetheart. She wants to fit in but is constantly being pressured to stay and fit in with the other Heathers.
what veronica was going to be if she just applyed with the heathers
I think that like all real people, she isn't completely good or completely bad. In this song we see that she felt like she had to fit in and if she made one wrong move she'd be executed. But she also volunteered Veronica for rape and she participated in the bullying, whether or not she wanted to she did so
If she stayed with the heathers?

Okay guys-
But In the play she says before this something like
"I'm on the bus,

“And the captain is pointing. Well who made her captain?”

Yeah of course H. McNamara.
Dashie Allheart PROTECT HER AT ALL COSTS
Dashie Allheart you are clearly dumb
How so? She was clearly just a follower and she's too naive to think for herself.
Dashie Allheart Saying that it she is not responsible for her actions because she is a follower, is kind of idiotic, dude. She is an awesome and somewhat relatable character, and this is a great song, but she is NOT innocent or free of any wrong doings

Imagine Heather McNamara, Peggy from Hamilton, and Karen from Mean girls all meeting😂💗
They would make their own group
A support group
Are we forgetting Gretchen
Right but Gretchen would be with Heather d 😭😭 I don't really think they're alike but Peggy and heather m are more like Karen and these groups are usually 3 😭😭

Can we take a moment to appreciate her enunciation? Like I can understand almost every word she’s singing
Elle mclemore is a legend. Her voice and her spirit are powerful. Phenomenal vocalist and actress.
I love heathers so much this song and kindergarten boyfriend always make me cry 😭
Same omg
Can we all take a moment to appreciate Heather Mac’s vocals?
Oinkiepie
Thank you for telling me 😅
Omg thats so sad😢
For y'all who don't know, this song is about her social anxiety and trying to keep it cool. Its sung by Elle McLemore (Heather McNamara).
This is one of my favourite songs in the musical, it’s short but has so much power and depth

This is the song that got me into this musical in the first place! It gives me chills every time I hear it. Such an amazing song!!!
When I was listening to this song for the first time, I thought it was a calm sad song. So I put it to a high volume on my PC with my headphones on, I was doing homework. When it went ‘Everyone’s pushing.’ I remember nearly falling out of my chair lmao. My favourite song now.
LOL THATS AWESOME
i love the line "who made her captain" because shes not necessarily talking about chandler. shes talking about duke. showing that mcnamara worked hard and deserves to be the "leader" also i rlly like how in blue reprise she follows the crowd showing that shed rather go with the crowd and not be laughed at rather than be herself and side with veronica
Thank you so much!!
My pleasure!
Heathers Musical Lyrics how many songs does this musical have?
darknight2354 There are 20 on the soundtrack. I'm still working on the rest, but they will be posted ASAP.
See, I actually wondered if this song alluded to "Moby Dick" at all. A lot of the themes discussed in the song mirror ideas discussed in the book. Plus they're always talking about how that book means they were going to kill themselves.
"Eskimo!" right?!?
+ASliceofKai
I've always thought so. It's supposed to show that things are taking a turn for the worse, not necessarily suicide, and I feel like Lifeboat is a reference to the book itself since there wasn't a way to include it
@@UnicornFilms2001 the book form what I've heard is about slowly killing yourself
AHHHHHH THIS IS SUCH A GOOD SONG
Musical Theater songs where a character is having a mental breakdown:

All You Wanna Do (Six)

Lonely Room from “Oklahoma!”
Betrayed from “The Producers”
Not Getting Married Today from “Company”
Side by Side by Side also from “Company” (or in the version with Raul Esparza, Side by Side by Side and What Would We Do Without You?)
The Ladies Who Lunch also *also* from Company
Being Alive also *also* a l s o from “Company”
Could I Leave You from “Follies”
(maybe? partially?) When He Sees Me from “Waitress”
(technically, though more so a movie musical) No Pressure from “Encanto”
Glitter and Be Gay from “Candide”
The Dog Song from “Sunday in the Park With George”
30/90 from “tick… tick… BOOM!”
Note:
There is good reason why I mentioned Company (written by Stephen Sondheim) four times. It’s really good! I mean so good you should watch it. Like right now. I demand you. Please. (The version I mentioned is really good for a starter)
Also watch like literally everything else cause you are doing yourself is disfavor by not watching these old but gold of musical theatre!
"I cant even hear her"
**turns volume up**
*"EVERYONE'S PUSHING-"*
This song is relatable to the point of being uncomfortable. Jesus.
This is one of my favorite songs from Heathers along me inside of me and candy store.

Hits different when you have new headphones on and get lost in the comments so you forget your listening to music and then heather m starts shouting EVERYONES PUSHING EVERYONES FIGHTING
It’s honestly kinda concerning how many people can relate to this song.
this song man...
it always gives me the chills...
wow, here i am thinking heather mcnamara is an innocent little cinnamon roll :/ i love that she is such a complex character :)
this song is probably the most brilliant song i've ever heard. its so deep when you really hear the lyrics and her portrayal is gorgeous. if you listen closely you can hear her quiver. it shows the true depth of a person, no matter how confident they seem outside. it shows the amount of anxiety people suffer through everyday situations. it shows even the cruelest of people have a battle on the inside. heathers needs more recognition tbh
0:39 her voice during this part is just amazing i cant even desribe how good it is
therapist: How are you feeling
me: Like Michael waving through a window in a lifeboat
therapist: oh no
This song, and entire show is so powerful! I love it! I wish I could have seen it before it closed!
This song is so deep and beautiful. While I don't have the exact same experience, I still feel so connected. In theatre, you are constantly worried about being what THEY want you to be. And if you aren't, your done. So I don't have the same issues, it's very similar to how I feel sometimes. Also, Elle is just amazing, so I'm obsessed with this song for that reason too
"Let's have a song about hippie love and accepting flaws, with a joke about a woman faking orgasms!"
"Yeah, right after it we can have a depressed girl talk about how she's considering suicide!"
0:39 that part gives me goosebumps
this song makes me cry. love this song
I don't think Heather is dumb I just think its a facade so she doesn't "say the wrong thing"
Sims Diva Maybe that wasn't the right thing to say on my part. She isn't exactly "very dumb" but she isn't the brightest light in the shop either. Lets just say she's average.
Isabella Haljean I think the line is "damn these child proof caps" definitely not the brightest bulb
Such an amazing song, but SO hard to sing.
yeah but (for me at least) it's not _nearly_ as hard as some of Veronica's songs, though that's expected since Veronica's the main character.
I can really hear the emotions, expressions and acting in this.
It's so powerful
The pain is so relatable
heather mcnamera is my dream role.. ever. and this song is so simple yet so bone chilling, somehow
heather mcnamara deserves more than a minute and a half
she’s my fav heather
compared to everyone else's interpretations i feel real dumb abt mine lol, i think i was too literal. i like everyone else's interpretations though!
i interpreted this song as just her talking about, like, the people around her are dying and getting hurt, and she feels powerless to stop it.
she worries she'll be the next person to go, to be tipped over the edge, and she's terrified of it.
when i hear "the tiniest lifeboat, full of people i know," i think of like. she's in this boat, full of people she knows (duh), and slowly they're dropping off, dying, the weakest are disappearing and she's scared because she thought they were the strongest.
she mentions that heather chandler appeared to be so put-together, and then she "killed herself," and that worries her, because she thought heather was so much stronger and better off than her and turned out that wasn't true.
they weren't the strongest, and now she worries, because she knows she can never be stronger than they were. she knows she can never be more put-together than they were. if they were people she looked up to, and they all killed themselves, what does that mean for her? is she next? she's thinking about it, because she feels like there's no hope for _her_ if there was no hope for _them._
and when the captain points at her, telling her she's the weakest, the next one to go, it's her own self-doubt and hatred, and her terrible peers too, confirming her worst fears for her. that she's not strong enough to survive.
why is this play so dark??? ☺😐
Oh, I dunno... Maybe because it wants to capture how cutthroat high school nature is among students and show how damaging peer pressure can be?
I mean, other plays aren't definitely dark. Absolutely not. That's just absurd.
Musically Made have you watched the movie?
To be fair the story and original movie isn't the most lighthearted to begin with so
Maybe because High School is dark...?
