    Awesome video! I must say though that IMGs from countries like India, Pakistan, China, Russia, countries of Latin America have it much harder. Their experience in medical school is unique and different from that of any Western medical school. Their culture and a way of learning is quite different as well. Eastern cultures are not so used to testing system and take more time preparing for USMLE. Also, they often don't have any connections in the US which makes it very challenging to find an observership or join a rotation program. Thank you for this vlog, it helps surface a very important topic.

    Hi, Please would it be possible to interview an international (non-U.S citizen and non-green card holder) medical school student or Resident that attended a U.S medical school recently. Also an international medical graduate (carribean medical school, African Medical school, european medical school preferentially. But any international medical school will be excellent as well) who (is a non-U.S citizen, not canadian and is not a green card holder) is currently doing their residency in the U.S

Do you think you can do an interview with "Caribbean" medical residents because I've heard they are pretty competitive now a days and have gotten into some really great (hard) residency programs? I'm thinking about going that route due to there impressive match list. St .George University school of Medicine would be the best option since it's the oldest and one of the best Caribbean medical schools. What do you think!
    Best of luck!

    i passed my usmle step 1 and 2 ck in 2002 got 91, 96 221 246 respectively.unfortunately couldnt get visa for cs exam. this is something which imgs have to consider.
    i wanted to do emergency medicine in us . anyway ended up doing residency in em from uk . so never give up hope. there are always other options available. dont waste time.
    if considering residency in usa better start while one is in medschool and try to give usmle step 1 at the end of basic sciences and 2ck in final year . this should help. having a gc does help.

    I have a question for her. I am a student in Europe. I'm gonna graduate from medical school in a month. I've done a rotation in the US but I hated the American health care system and how doctors work way too many hours there. I am wondering if it's the same in Australia. Because I am thinking of getting a residency there....I've heard it's really nice to work there. Am I wrong? Why did you choose to go back to the US?

  • @dananorthe1

    This was a great video. However there are some US based medical schools internationally that trains you for the US. There are alot in the caribbean, where you do your early years there and clinical rotations in the states. They also prep you for the usmle which you have to take and do internship there. I have applied. Just waiting to see if i was accepted and your videos have helped me so much. Thanks alot.

      +Sharlene Benton Hey! If you haven't already you should watch Andrea's latest video since it gives some advice on pursuing medicine as a foreigner in America :) I'm not so sure what you mean by recognition of residency in Australia? If you mean graduating medical school in Australia, then becoming a resident in America to potentially move home and practice? My understanding of that is you'd be required to work in a rural area for a number of years and also be accredited for your training overseas through the australian medical board (www.medicalboard.gov.au) take a look at the registration section on that website for more info! But yes to work in America you have to either do your residency over there by matching through their system (after completing the required usmle steps), I think you can also finish your residency in Australia and then move but you're still required to be certified by usmle. Hope this helps!

    • @SomethingNick
      @SomethingNick 8 лет назад

      ***** You're welcome! To be honest I've never heard of or researched being an accredited physician in both the us and Australia at the same time, so I'm not really sure how you would go about achieving that. I think it would be quite difficult as you would have to maintain your qualifications in both countries, meaning fees/exams as well as working requirements not to mention malpractice insurance. I think you'll have to decide between the us and Australia at some point, otherwise you'd be jumping through all these hoops every time you chose to return to either place. But I may be wrong! I'd suggest shooting an email to the website I posted in my last comment to you and also to whatever medical board governs Americas physicians :)

      +Sharlene Benton No, I did not get any answer on this .What I know is that international students have to do the USMLE (like all the americans or anyone who wants to be able to work there as doctors). But since I'm not from US or CANADA I will need a certificate from ECFMG to be eligible to do the Step 3 of the exam.

    congratulations and all the best vanessa
    i was an international (canadian) medical student in australia
    currently an ED registrar, got my australian citizenship earlier this year
    personally i'd be much more happy to be practising medicine in australia than the united states, but for those with family overseas it's totally understandable
    the way training is done is completely different, each with its pros and cons

      +Tasnadian Hey I am wondering if u r a us citizen and med student in au can u stay in au and do ur residency there?

    • @tasnadian
      @tasnadian 8 лет назад

      +robertjames12 If you're a non-Australian graduating at an Australian medical school, you'll be able to stay for subsequent training only if you continue on to complete an internship year. Those internships are becoming increasingly difficult to get as there are many students coming out of universities this year and onwards. Because of that many hospitals are prioritising internships for Australian citizens/permanent residents first before allocating them to graduating international students. There are, still, places in the country (often regional/rural) that are left with unfilled spots near the end that can go to internationals. I'm not as clear on a situation where a foreign student (through whatever means) obtains citizenship/permanent residency during medical school.. I've read they still consider your immigration status upon enrolment into medical school as the deciding factor in prioritising you for internship allocation. It's getting tougher and tougher.

      r u familiar with the brisbone program and it does rotations in louisana can u tell me more about it etc?

    • @tasnadian
      @tasnadian 8 лет назад

      +robertjames12 Unfortunately I don't think I can give you very much information regarding UQ's medical program. You might have to contact the university directly. I do know they run some sort of a program for some of its students so they can go to the US for certain rotations (I think even spend a year or more there), and some of taken advantage of that to make their way back home (to US/Canada). I did not go to medical school at UQ so I'm not familiar with it, and I don't think many other schools do anything similar. However I'm pretty sure despite doing rotations/terms/time back in North America, the medical degree you'll get is from Australia and thus the US/Canada will likely still require you to go through the same process of licensure (exams, etc) as all other graduates of non-US/Canadian med schools do. The advantage you'll get is probably through referees/contacts/connections that you (hopefully) gain from spending your time in New Orleans. Studying medicine in another country with intentions of returning back home is always going to be a gamble, not to mention expensive. There is no guarantee that you'll attain a spot for post-graduate training at either country, but of course it's not impossible. At what stage of your education are you at, currently?

    I'm a junior in college now studying clinical psychology
    Lately I've really been considering psychiatry.

    • @captainoatsxxxx1
      @captainoatsxxxx1 9 лет назад

      Definitely not!!! I'm in medical school now and there are lots of people who didn't figure out until years after college that they wanted to pursue medicine. They ended up doing post-bac programs after college to complete the coursework needed to apply to medical school. Make sure you understand that if you want to pursue psychiatry, you will have to complete medical school first (4 years), and then complete a residency in psychiatry after you graduate medical school. PM me if you have any questions :)

Its a lot of time it takes you have to go to ALOT of events and all that. It takes away from studying a lot of the time and the people depending on the sorority don't put school as a priority. However, if its something you really want go for it. Make it work that kind of volunteer work/leadership looks great on applications.

    If you have at least a 3.8 GPA and a 10% or higher MCAT you have a ONE-in-SEVEN chance of gaining admission to a U.S. or Canadian medical school. All others with a GPA ranging from 3.7 down to 2.0 are considered to be "ineligible." PERIOD. If you have the courage to attend medical school in Latin America you will graduate five years later and be facing not one, not two, but three brutally hard ECFMG exams. Good luck. You're going to need it.

      andrew cao Depends on the country. My friend just finished Medical scho in Ukraine. The TOTAL cost, including tuition, living expenses, books etc was 20,000 USD. That was the total cost involved for the whole 6 years of medical school. And it is all in English. He has got into a cardiology residency in Ukraine now. He has now become fluent in the language and want to practice there as it was his dream to become a Cardiologist.
